My grandfather lived to be 102. He fought in France for four years in the trenches of the Western Front. He was gassed by German artillery shells in 1916 and was blinded for three months before being sent back from a field hospital to the front lines. One of the few comforts these men had was their pipes and the tobacco they shared amongst themselves. I now have my grandfathers pipe tool which I use with my pipe every day. Keep making your videos Sir. I know they do me a power of good.
I'm a Catholic piper who is fairly new to this great pipe tradition. As the saying goes: you smoke a cigarette; you enjoy a cigar; but you savor a pipe. God bless.
I am a Methodist pastor who has worshiped in various churches over the years. On December 24, 1985, I attended Midnight Mass at a Catholic Church. Someone gave me a ride to the service. Afterward, I walked home. The weather was pleasantly cold. As I walked, I smoked my pipe and sang Christmas carols. This was a wonderful walk and a mystical moment!
Great channel you have here Alan. My introduction to pipe smoking suspiciously coincided with my wife going back home to see her family. When she came back I told her I smoke a pipe now. She laughed while shaking her head ‘I leave you for one week!’ And that was that. I think I married the right woman.
I'm a pentecostal pastor ( raised Baptist) from N.C.. I had a great uncle who took a pipe. Even as a small child I liked the smell of it. At 45 I smoked my first bowl and I thought I was going to be struck by lightning. I'm still here and I have not been convicted of the lord because of it. Matter of fact, it has given me times of enjoyment, peace and deep contemplation. Thank you for your channel and God bless!
I've been a pipe smoker off and on since 18, I'm now 38 and I wanted to soberly and sincerely thank you sir, because somewhere along my life between long work days (4th generation carpenter), and father of four between 6 and 15 years old, I seem to have become busy and have gotten away from my roots. Raised as a proper southern gentleman, a heavy reader and philosopher, you've reminded me of the need to slow down in this hectic world, to savor the slow and simple pleasures of life. I've as a result rekindled my love affair with the pipe and with good books as well. Thank you for the reminder of my roots, and my return to why I enjoyed the pipe in the first place. Good show and God bless sir

God has blessed me with a most incredible wife. She insist on going to the tobacconist with me. I enjoy being with my wife as we pick out together. It is a real treat to watch the other pipe smokers amazed by my wive enthusiasm over the different blends of tobacco. She loves vanilla blend. In the evening after supper she enjoys starting my pipe for me always a good start of a beautiful evening together. Truly God has blessed me. Yours truly lazy cowboy
If your wife enjoyes the vanilla flavours try out the S.V.T (former Sweet Vanolla Honeydew) by Dan Tobacco if you can purchase it. I'm more on the natural side but this one is definetely interesting as it's a Virginia being flavoured without Black Cavendish. I really enjoyed it.
Alan, Another fun video to watch. As a linguist, I love listening to your accent and cadence of speech. Don't let dumb comments on social media get to you. The problem with this epidemic is that the people affected by this terrible disease do not realise they are inflicted with it. This affliction is called incurable stupidity. The history and tradition of pipe smoking, the mechanics and beauty of a good pipe, the taste of the many blends of good pipe tobacco... are all good. But it's the time spent with my pipe - time alone, time being quiet, time to think and reflect, this is my favorite thing about pipe smoking. 0:53 I come from a family with uncles and dad who smoked a pipe, and one of the things I found attractive about my husband when I met him, was, that he smoked a pipe, and knew good tobacco 😊❤
I just wanted to tell you I appreciate this video. Ironically, my wife and I just had a long talk about this very topic tonight the 30th. She said she is perfectly ok with me pipe smoking which is awesome. However we had family over for the holidays and they have been severely critical about it. The irony is that they were all cigarette smokers and have never smoked a pipe unless it was full of dope. I love the pipe smoking culture and even the occasional cigar. I agree your explanation about corporate America and cigarettes and can see how the cultures differ. I was having some doubts regarding this as family can be inclined to instill in us sometimes and your video helped me recenter. Thank you and to you and yours have a blessed holiday and may the Lord watch over you all.
I absolutely love the pauses taken to tend to the pipe. It’s so easy to rush through life on our way to the grave. How badly we need to just slow down, listen and think. We’d be so much better off if we read our Bibles a little slower, gave ourselves room to think and time to form meaningful words.
I so love and appreciate your videos. I quite enjoy the way they feel like a conversation and smoke with a friend. As far as religion and political view points, we may have difference of opinions on some things (I'm sure we would), but I respect your opinions and your rights to them. If anyone gets offended at your views or mention of your faith to the point they can't appreciate a well-thought discussion, they shouldn't watch. Thank you for your time and all you do, Mr. Harrelson.
Love your no-punches-pulled thoughts on the Gospel, men and life. We all, every one of us, are in dire need of the Son of God. My pipe (or a cigar) and my Bible are a regular reminder of how much I need Him every day.

You along with Dry Creek Wrangler School have been my finds of 2022. Thank you for your content and pipe advice. I sure I heard you say you had a little one on the way, with that in mind I wish you and you family all the very best for the new year. Please keep the great videos coming.
Man you don't have to say sorry so many times, 'coz men like me have been smoking wonderful tobaccos in the choicest of pipes for thirty or more years...and they know n' enjoy the draw of a favourite tobacco... Thank you very much for coming up with this topic... Keep it up...❗😊👍
I have been a pipe smoker since I was 16. I like it and I enjoy it. When I go to work if I dont have my pipe people ask me where its at. The only time I leave it in the car on purpose is when me and my wife go to a restaurant because you will have that bozo who will start waving their hands and pretend cough and complain. As for the health risks, Im a 48 year old, mature, free thinking man. I am well aware of the risks of smoking and its MY choice to mitigate those risks and accept them or not. My better half doesnt mind it and sometimes she will even smoke a cigar with me. Thanks for another great vid my friend, enjoy Three Kings Day (Old Christmas) and I hope you are well Alan.
Alan, congratulations on your family’s future addition. I always look forward to The Pipe Cottage videos and would like to add that with your voice and your knowledge of history you would make a fantastic narrator. Watching your last video with Dry Creek Wrangler School was very informative. You mentioned your favorite episode of that was Brotherhood of the Leaf, which I went back and watched and very true to how it can bring different people together with a common bond. Thanks for having Duane on your channel.
I’m a fellow Kentuckian, I’ve gotten into pipes after delving into cigars this past year. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I bought my father some tobaccos for Christmas that you recommended. I like your perspective on life, although I am not strongly religious. I’m in my late 20s with a wife and daughter, using tobacco (cigar or pipe) allows me to reflect on the great life I have. Keep up the quality videos and enjoy your Christmas holiday!
My wife is the only person I asked if it was cool to start my pipe journey. She was very supportive. I love that woman. I sought knowledge from others before I started, not permission and not for health concerns. I was inspired by Tolkien's writing, but not because it was cool, but because it seemed to mean a lot more and I needed that. Now I smoke and enjoy my "me time" wherever and whenever I can. As for the pause to take care of the pipe, please do. I'd expect no less. I really have enjoyed your videos and look forward to the next one.
Pause all you like. At 58 yo and the youngest son of WW2-era parents, I have enjoyed the familiarity of common sense and Biblical moralities in your videos. We share a lifestyle love of pipes and the memories of a bygone time. My grandfather and uncles smoked a pipe, and for me, feeling somewhat "left behind" at times, it's a connection to things and smells from childhood and the wonder of it all. Yes, I don't advertise to my strict family members who know very well how to judge, and nor do I need their permission. My wife bought some of my most prized pipes and enjoys 'some" of the leaf aromas... It's part of me, wisdom, cranky, father and husband. Christian man. All the best for the remaining 2022. 🤠
Pagan here, I understand I'm a rare breed in My walk in that I not only agree with you on many points but I'm not bothered by the name of Christ. A long discussion for another time. In any case, new follower and glad to be following a man of quality, thought and honor. Those words don't mean much these days but they do to me.
I learned about your channel on dry creek wrangler school, i am wanting to get back into pipe smoking, after many years, i never learned how to smoke my pipe, & i have learned a great deal from you & love the pipe cottage channel, thank you Alan
Greetings from Georgia, I just discovered your channel yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed your video. As I sit here with my coffee and Escudo, your moments of pause to draw on your pipe, makes it feel like we are sitting across from each other. Being a man of faith and a brother of the briar I appreciate your thoughts concerning the subject of faith, hamartiology, and the heart. Blessings to you and your family, looking forward to your next inspiration
Spot on Sir! Watched this as a group of dear friends are making our bi-monthly pilgrimage to Boswells Pipes in Alexandria PA tomorrow. So looking forward to having a pipe with Mr Boswell. If you have not had the pleasure to sit and share a pipe with J.M. in his shop, I highly recommend it! I will warn you, though not a competition, he has you beat on the Southern Accent! At least by my northern ear.
I have to say, I have enjoyed your channel in the few short months since I discovered you. Now, I really love your channel. You took a stand for the truth of your faith and convictions, you stood up for the truth of Jesus, you put marriages at the priority of the conversation, and revealed your transformed heart. Be encouraged to continue to talk about these topics to a world that really needs to hear the truth. God bless you and your family, and congratulations on the expected arrival of your little one.
I recently just started smoking a pipe. Your videos have me some knowledge...at 1st it was what seemed like a "battle" to do it but I never gave up and now I'm getting better at it and it does seem to give me some relaxation. I really do enjoy your videos. Thank you
Alan, you've made very insightful videos, but this one has to be one of my favorites! Thank you for speaking truth. May God continue to bless you, and may He make His face shine upon you. I'd love to stop by in the Spring, shake your hand, and enjoy a bowl with you.
Many solid and needed truths in this video. Only one exception for me personally: “Children ask permission, men do not”. I agree with that in smoking my pipe, but not as a blanket statement. I asked for permission to fish in my neighbors pond. My future son-in-law asked for my permission to propose to my daughter. These are gentlemanly behaviors.
Hello, Dr. Harrelson. I just wanted to take a moment to tell you that I thoroughly enjoy watching these videos, even as a nonbeliever. I greatly appreciate your reverence for tradition and as a reformed cigarette smoker I can attest to what you say about the pipe being a different animal. Pipe smoking is certainly a hobby, not something we partake in compulsively to get a quick fix. Enough rambling from me, I hope this message finds you well. Take care my friend.
I am a PT and a runner. I also ride motorcycles and now smoke a pipe. Should I also include sun tanning outside. I live, I don't worry about other people's opinion of me. I live the right way and not religious, but state to all, if it wakes you up everyday to live right and not harm others and to make you be the best you can be, believe what you want. I thank you for introducing me to this hobby. Thank you! Smoke a pipe of nice tobacco, and if it speaks to you, then buy more stuff to get into the hobby. Have fun. Keep this channel going. Love the content.
I really look forward to seeing your videos. They are fantastic. I have transitioned from cigars to pipes mostly in the last couple of years. I enjoy them both. The only thing I find addictive about pipe smoking is buying the pipes themselves! I do enjoy your views and have been influenced to look at and explain things differently as a result. Thank you for all that you bring to the table and I look forward to seeing your next video.
I come from a long line of avid pipe smokers! They were hard working farmers from Georgia who lived by the Golden Rule and enjoyed the bounty of their labor, including tobacco! Keep puffing!
Amen and Amen 🙏🏻 Merry Christmas to you sir. This festive season I have enjoyed many blends in a brand new Peterson Dublin Derry 106. The pipe (in general) is a blessing I do not take for granted.
I truly believe time is a gift. Time is something that can’t be taken back once it is given. I truly appreciate the time you choose to gift to us, offering your words of wisdom and the sharing of knowledge. Thank you!
I agree with your treatise on tradition. I agree with much of what you dicuss in your videos, even if I believe that people are basically good vs evil. I would love to see a video on materialism.
All of us pipe smokers share a common bond, for sure. I've been smoking pipes for 50 years. I have been through many tempests and storms in life, and my pipes and tobacco's have helped see me through all of them. There is no end to all the nuances of variations from the many blends available. Pipe smoking is most definitely a lifestyle. Take care, Alan. Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them immensely.
Well said, Sir, well said. We have a great deal in common. I also teach History, we like similar books, smoke our pipes, are "old souls" and don't like the modern world and everything it stands for, and above all, we are both Christians. Bless you and keep up the good work. Greetings from South Africa.
Another great video, my friend. Like you, my wife is also supportive and an encouragement to me regarding my pipe smoking. I am very blessed indeed. I always enjoy your videos and get a kick out of your “take it or leave it” personality. Hope you have an enjoyable visit with your parents and a good weekend. Brother in Christ.
Thank you for your time I enjoy your video’s, you have teach me so much. This life style has saved my life, (the pipe has saved my life) thank you for your help
Alan. I just wanted to let you know that I love listening to your musings and wisdom as a fellow pipe smoker. We are most likely opposed in morals, political views, and way of seeing life, but that does not matter. Pipe and cigar smoking to me is simply a relaxing hobby that promotes deep thought and contemplation. I'm still very young, but of age. I'm Generation Z. Brought up Catholic, and now an atheist, part of the LGBT community, and so forth. We are literally diametrically opposed, but it does not stop me from enjoying your videos. Your content is fantastic for any and every pipe smoker no matter what creed, religion, or background. Keep the good work up and I wish your family a safe and happy Christmas. I cannot wait to see more of your content in 2023.
Glad you had Dwayne on as a guest of I may have never found your channel. I don't smoke pipes or cigars, however I enjoy the teachings of anything and love the philosophy dude of things. Keep up the good work
I've been watching your videos for month now and sir you are spot on I Definitely live the holy life I smoke a tobacco pipe for 5 years now my father smoke's a pipe for 30 year's that's why I chose to smoke tobacco pipe I don't listen to drug addicts and cigarette smoker's blessings my friend 👍🏻👍🏻🙂🙏🙏👼👼
I really enjoy your subjects that you put out for us to learn from. I'm a pipe smoker and a cigar smoker. It is relaxing to me in the evening after a good meal. I really like the fact that you also speak of our Lord and Savior to. Thank you for taking time to do this.
I quit smoking cigarettes 16 years ago and I really wanted to get into pipe smoking for some time now. With this new "hobby" of pipe smoking I didn't want to fall back into the cigarette "habit" due to the chemicals that's addictive. Pipe smoking is so relaxing and my wife is supporting and likes the smell of creme brulee. Those of you looking into pipe smoking go for it and be a man of men and don't ask for permission of others who are going to criticize you for smoking a pipe when they don't even have a clue. So my brothers HAPPY PIPE SMOKING
I agree with you relative to the tradition of pipe smoking. Both my Grand-dads smoked a pipe. I enjoy my pipes with a book and a shot of cognac in the evening. I pray you and yours have had wonderful Christmas celebration.
It brings me joy that you are a GOD Fearing man. I love how smoking pipe has a way to slow me down and enjoy the fruits of my labor. It helps me to enjoy the moment and appreciate the beautiful blessings that God has brought into my life. God is good and his mercies are sufficient. Peace and grace be with you, my fellow brother in Christ. I hope that one day we can sit and have a good time of fellowship smoking our pipes.
I read in a medical journal that one of the chemicals in cigarettes acts with the nicotine to form a different form of nicotine which is much more potent and *highly addictive*, ...this in contrast to only tobacco in cigars and pipes.
There’s a chance that I might be fortunate in one aspect of my hobby smoking a pipe. Back when I rediscovered the collection of pipes I had inherited and forgotten about, my wife encouraged me to take up smoking. She has cherished memories of one of her grandfathers who smoked cigars and pipes. Most of his pipes were unfortunately lost, except one meerschaum that she keeps. My darling wife loves the smells of the various tobaccos I use. She says the pipe gives me a dignified appearance. I could go on, but to summarize my wife essentially pushed me to use a pipe and I don’t regret it.
I'm still only a cigar fan and that fondness is just a few months more than a year old alone. Took me 70 years to come to that and it was primarily because I enjoyed the fellowship of men doing likewise and the conversations we have while doing so. But I can see trying pipes too as time and resources allow and if our Lord grants me extra time. But I wanted to say I enjoy your channel and take on life and wish you a healthy, prosperous 2023.
My passion for pipe and cigar smoking lead my wife to taking up both herself. I love sharing my passion with others and helping them get into the lifestyle correctly.
I was born and raised in Virginia. You are an inspiration. Society has lost their compass. Keep doing what you are doing. I’m not a pipe smoker, I enjoy an evening cigar. But you sir capture the old world spirituality. Your words are soothing. Thankyou. And merry Christmas, and happy new year to you and your family.
Sir I hope our pathes cross some day. Men like you are rare, and I wole heartedly agree with this video. May the peace of God be with you and your family. Enjoy the season and the pipe.

Took a deep dive into your videos after discovering you from your talk with Dwayne. I'm all caught up! Good to hear from you again!
I agree with you on this topic especially your advice on marriage. I want to know more about that beautiful hat.
Greetings from Georgia,
I just discovered your channel yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed your video.
Congratulations on the new baby! Love your content, I look forward to every video. Have a great new year sir!
Very well said. We need more of these direct messages speaking the truth. Congratulations on your new baby.
You are a wise and introspective gentleman. Thank you!
Congratulations on the baby ,LOVED the video you guys are in my prayers
Thank you
Thanks alan , happy and peaceful new year to you and your loved ones.
Alan, you've made very insightful videos, but this one has to be one of my favorites! Thank you for speaking truth. May God continue to bless you, and may He make His face shine upon you. I'd love to stop by in the Spring, shake your hand, and enjoy a bowl with you.
Tradition is the cumulative experience of the saints inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit. Nuff said!!!
Another enjoyable perspective on our enjoyment of pipe smoking. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Grateful for your candor.
Hello, Dr.
Amen, Thank You and Happy New Year !!!
Great video. Thank you SO MUCH for this. Absolutely loved it. Your content is always appreciated. Thank you for all you do.
Merry Christmas, sir! Thank you for another fantastic conversation. Best wishes to you and yours.
Very Eloquently put! Thank You!
I come from a long line of avid pipe smokers! They were hard working farmers from Georgia who lived by the Golden Rule and enjoyed the bounty of their labor, including tobacco! Keep puffing!
- Cigarettes/Dope = Light Beer (consumed for the drug effect)
- Pipes/cigars = craft beer/mead/wine (consumed for the unique taste and smells)
I absolutely agree Alan. I have a MA in History. I believe that pipe smoking is a great stress reliever. Thanks for sharing my friend. Happy smokes
Thank you!
Alan, spot on again.. I am new to your community but I have been really enjoying you! Keep up the good work, Thanks
I agree with your treatise on tradition. I agree with much of what you dicuss in your videos, even if I believe that people are basically good vs evil. I would love to see a video on materialism.
I absolutely agree with your assessment. And I love the content on your CZcams channel. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
It’s New Years Eve and I’m enjoying a pipe while listening to your video. Thanks Alan…
Thank you for being a real one, Alan.
Well said, Sir, well said. We have a great deal in common. I also teach History, we like similar books, smoke our pipes, are "old souls" and don't like the modern world and everything it stands for, and above all, we are both Christians. Bless you and keep up the good work. Greetings from South Africa.
Always a pleasure listening to your words on past times and good honest living...
Well said. Great vid TPC. Thanks a lot. Have a great weekend and a very Happy New Year!
Amen brother! Thank you for sharing.
Have a happy and healthy New Year. I appreciate your videos, the setting and your thoughts make me want to enjoy another pipe.
Nice one, doc-and true as they come. Happy new year to you and yours. Cheers!
Preach it brother!!!!! Love your videos!!!!
Outstanding video sir. Proud to call you brother. We are all children of the father.
Good to see you again. Marry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family.
I agree with you relative to the tradition of pipe smoking. Both my Grand-dads smoked a pipe. I enjoy my pipes with a book and a shot of cognac in the evening. I pray you and yours have had wonderful Christmas celebration.
Great video, Alan! Merry Christmas!
Excellent advise... Very cool to read all the comments as well.
Amen brother! Preach it!!
That was a message full of wisdom there my brother.
Well said Alan. Happy New Year brother!
Very well said. Thank you for this video.
Another great video Alan!!
Boom
Thank you Allan enough said 😊
