  • Infections caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia appear to be increasing in frequency among the immunocompromised population and are challenging to treat. Moreover, resistance to traditional drugs used against these organisms is now becoming more common. Antibiotic options in these circumstances are scarce and new options are needed. We discuss this important topic with experts in the field. Recorded live in Washington DC at ASM Microbe 2022.
    Topics discussed:
    - Stenotrophomas maltophilia as an opportunistic pathogen and
    - The intrinsic ability of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia to resist common antimicrobials
    - Common mechanisms of resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    - Debate on treatment approaches and rationale for these strategies
    Guests:
    - Maria Fernanda Mojica PhD Senior Instructor, Case VA Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Epidemiology. Case Western Reserve University
    - Samuel Aitken, PharmD. Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pharmacy, University of Michigan.

I’ve once again had a culture come back positive for this. Freaks the drs out every time. They ask if I have cancer or HIV or something. I’ve had this come up many times throughout the years. This among other strange cultures and positive tests.. and seemingly nothing wrong with me. So weird.

Do you mind sharing how they tested it? I just had a sinus culture come back positive for this. A little nervous.

I had culture from left frontal sinus show this. I am being referred to infectious disease. I know I have IGG deficiency and NOD2 gene defect and I think it's related to this... bad immune system.

I have a family member that was diagnosed with small pockets of this in her heart. She has been receiving infusions, which is where they believe it came from.
Where can we go that may be able to help better with this?

I have heavy moderate trace after sinus surgery. Currently on fusion antibiotics. I am immune compromised as well. Very scared right now.
