  • "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. www.marineband....
Nothing among Sousa’s memoirs reveals the identity of the “gladiator,” but the first printing of the sheet music carried a dedication to Charles F. Towle of Boston. Towle was a journalist who was editor of the Boston Traveller at the time this march was written, but the nature of his association with Sousa is not known.
Sousa’s daughter Helen conjectured that her father might have been inspired by a literary account of some particular gladiator. It is unlikely that he would have dedicated a march to gladiators in general because of their ferocity and deeds of inhumanity, but perhaps one noble gladiator who had been a victim of circumstances might have been his inspiration. There has also been speculation that the march had some Masonic significance, inasmuch as it was written at the time he was “knighted” in Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, but this lacks substantiation.
For Sousa, “The Gladiator” brought back both happy and unhappy memories. In 1885 he had written the dirge “The Honored Dead” for Stopper and Fisk, a music publisher in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They were so pleased that they asked him to write a quickstep march. He responded with “The Gladiator,” but they rejected it. Their shortsightedness cost them dearly; Sousa then sold it to Harry Coleman of Philadelphia, and it eventually sold over a million copies. “The Gladiator” was the first Sousa composition to reach such wide circulation.

I remembered when I was just around 12 yrs old. watching the American Legion baseball game and the announcer would play Johns' music when the players were practicing before they played...now I'm 59 and all these songs bring back memories...:).

Apart from the very obvious service the Band is performing by recording Sousa's marches, the background information provided with each one is very valuable for the listener/reader who wants to the history. Many thanks to whoever compiled all of these.

I love how the melody slightly changes when compring 1:12 with 2:01. We are actually playing this song at my school, so this video is a good reference for me :)

But not in a Roman Arena or even any gladiator movie. To play this band music wild Gladiators are Marching In The Arena for guaranteed bloodbath and killings where only few would walk out victoriously with opponents blood on their weapons? N! The music would be something appropriate on Mister Rogers.

There are musical groups that try to reproduce actual Greek and Roman music, using actual instruments from that time. There are clip posted on CZcams, of arena music.
One group is called 'Musica Romana". A other is " Synaulia"..just do a you tube search for ancient Roman music.

If I was a gladiator a retiarius net man hearing this marching the arena, I still would not get my alpha male endorphins pumped up to fight another Gladiator. It's not dramatic sounding enough to want to go into battle. The Hollywood music you would hear in movies like Barabbas, Sign of the cross and other movies with great Gladiator battles seem to fit the gladiator fighting scenes. But this piece we just heard is much better then Julius's commonly heard circus music we only associated with the circus.. I don't know what the composer was smoking when you wrote that piece that's we only associate with kids clowns elephants and acrobats and not with men fighting hacking each other spilling their opponents blood slicing through there entrails
