Parallel slide is one of those maneuvers that everyone on inline skates wants to master. It is graceful and powerful. It inspires awe from onlookers. In Canada we grow up playing hockey, spraying ice with every awesome stop. However, on inline skates, the parallel slide or hockey stop seems so much more difficult. I say "if you can turn you can slide."

When we break down the parallel slide we find the key components.
Edging
Compression
Counter rotation
Weight transfer and distribution
The parallel slide is done on corresponding edges. Corresponding edges are one inside edge and one outside edge. Same edges used to perform a parallel or lunge turn. For most intermediate skaters this is not a problem. If you are struggling with a parallel slide it is a good idea to spend some time working on your edges. The hard part of the parallel slide is the slight unweighting of the body that allows the wheels to slide. This is done with a counter rotation and compression.
Counter rotation is a rotation of the upper body is the opposite direction of your edges. For example if you are edging as if turning to your right the counter rotation would be a rotation of your upper body to the left.
The compression is the bending of the knees and flexing of the ankles. With your skates on corresponding edges and your arms in position for the counter rotation the slide initiates with a compression. Timing the counter rotation with the decompression will result in a parallel slide.
Weight transfer is positioning your body weight from toe to heel or from foot to foot. Your body weight should be evenly distributed on each foot. I tend to have too much weight on the foot that is on the outside edge. This results in me slipping out onto my butt. The weight transfer is from toe to heel as you compress and decompress.
To master the parallel slide you first want to practice on a smooth concrete surface. Start by practicing in a static position.
Feet shoulder width apart
Corresponding edges
Arms in counter rotation position
Compress by bending knees and flexing ankles
Counter rotate as you decompress. Think of the decompression a pushing through your heels. - Sport
Shawn it is the best tutorial on parallel sliding, in detail explanation.
Please make more tutorials on how to turn 180s, jumps...etc. We'll follow you.
Ah by the way, playlists are easier to navigate :)
Thank you for the the nice comment.
Do you have any suggestions on how I should set up the playlists?
I may suggest tutorials, reviews, and podcasts in addition to that video breakdowns which you've already done.
In my opinion, you are really successful on how to teach skating. In your videos I observed that you give the details necessary. The community is lack of such videos and you can fill this gap. By doing that, people who follow Bill, will follow you too and more. So if you increase the number of tutorials, it would be great to have this section.
Second, reviews. There are readings on the web investing the skate types, equipments, sizes etc... You have all the knowledge. You have the Shop Task. On a video I saw that you asked us to give sizes of our skates and feet and review how comfortable they were. I believe you are interested, so I might think it is something nice to have. Including such a section with others would make the channel all in one, you know what I mean..
That's all, hope I made myself clear. See you on new videos.
Great feedback! Thank you!!
and most definitely the coolest too what a lovely bloke peace and love and I love the reggae intro guys so damned cool and tasteful really goes with the skate fraternity lol
agreed
I've been looking for a video like this that goes really far in depth on how to hockey stop this is perfect me and my friend practiced all day and we finally learned how to hockey stop thank you!
By far the best tutorial I've seen for this slide, perfect!
Thank you Vincent
Thank you, Shaun! You inspire me to wear protective gear, to work on my fundamentals, to try new things, and do all with fun. You've also inspired me to look into a working holiday to Canada to hopefully skate with you guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I've been practicing the hockey stop lately, and I definitely have to work on my outside edges. This demonstration is great! Thank you.
Just wanted to thank you for this video! After two weeks of practice I was able to land my first couple parallel slides! Thanks for the great content and keep it up!
I can't thank you enough been practising for 4 to 5 hours for the past 3 day and now i can stop 80% 90% of the time. The explanations you give step by step with video step by step helped a lot! New sub
You are now my go-to for tutorials! Clearly explained and broken down into components for practice - a 5* thumbs up - keep em coming!
Hi Shawn, I'm Manuel from Chile and I'm so glad 'cause I've been following the steps to develop a parallel slide and today I made it, I slide about 8 times and it feels strange at first but I'm going to keep trying to get master it, thanks my friend and keep the good work with your vids ✌✌✌
Thank you for this. I've mentioned this before, but the way you break things down, especially with particular details on weight transfer which I find important and most helpful, really make things so clear compared to any other videos I've seen. Keep it up, I think you will see a big following soon!
Awesome! Thanks for the support.
I’ve seen quite a few tutorials on the hockey stop, but I think your breakdown gave me the tools I need to finally get it.
Just got back into inline skating this summer after doing it as a youth in the 90’s (with Rollerblades and K2’s back in the day). Your skating and videos are awesome and inspiring. I’m a decent enough skater (ice skated and played hockey for 35 years), but your knowledge and ability on inline skates is down right impressive. The best part of getting back into it is sharing my love for inline skating with my 6 year old who now also skates and plays hockey. I’m almost up to the point of being able to do a parallel hockey stop on my in-line skates, but it’s tough finding the courage to commit. I can easily get the outside skate to slide, but not confident enough for both. I’m nearly 40 now and not into covering myself with road rash on a failed attempt…lol. Learning stuff like this is much easier on ice as you just slide out (no road rash).
Each lesson is a gift, thanks to share your knowledge.
best tutorial about power slide i have seen so far , very detailed, thank you very much .
Thank you so much!
THE BEST explanation ot this maneuver I've ever seen. Thank you
This is the most helpful tutorial for me. There’s ones that explain the physics very well and then demonstrate. But there are none (except yours) that show an exercise and drill to learning how to slide.
This was great, exactly the kind of video I have been looking for lately.
Thanks for producing quality content that is thorough and engaging.
My pleasure. Thank you for supporting the video and the nice comments.
Great that you can find proper words to express what to do. Thanks!
Dude your videos are (chefs kiss) I tried teaching my wife the basics….lemons, the chop stepping, she just was not getting it, sling on your video and boom it clicked. I’m definitely about to use this video to get down my parallel, I just got down the power slide. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yours tutorials are simply the best
Great tutorial. Another one that I found helpful was Ricardo Lino’s tutorial on parallel sliding as well. Although yours is briefer, it has just as much content! The weight shifting and arms swinging was helpful!
Your videos are awesome. I love that you get very specific with things like balance, counter-balance, where to put different parts of the body and how to move and compression and yeah. Awesome. I've seen to many videos where it's just "turn sideways and lean forward." You really break it down and that has made it so much easier!! Good stuff thanks!
No worries, my friend! Thank you for the nice comment.
Awesome,I keep rewatching this one.
Heads and shoulders above all the other hockey stop tutorials. Cheers!
Brilliant! That's the best tutorial I've seen on parallel slides, thanks!
Thats awesome!
Absolutely love your videos - thank you for creating great content!
Great step by step tutorial. Thanks for that.
Wow... Fast class and one of the best ones....
thanks man this is the best paralel slide tutorial
love the videos as a new rider and a Canadian much love on all levels. Sending good vibes and hopefully good rides your way. -Ciao, Rainy
Started skating again 2 weeks ago. Skated as a kid and ice skated a bit. Loving it. Can't wait until I can do this stop. Thanks for the nice videos!
Focus on edging properly into turns and then start adding in the counter rotation. Finish off with the compression and you will have it.
Great ! Thanks for your explanations and your passion ! ciao, Mike
I love your tutorials, I've learned a lot with them! :D
This is brilliant, thanks Shawn!!
Smashing good. I can't wait to try it out!
Excellent tutorial!!
Dziękuję. Super wyjaśnienie. :)
Really helpful and well explained.
The Counter-Rotation was key for me! Thanks!
you inspire me so much Shawn! thank you💕
One of best explained videos ... keep it up
thank you so much for teaching me this now it's time to put this to action
Very helpful Mr Unwin. Namaste!
once again superb coaching from Shaun really detailed and easy and a joy to watch thanks so much from London
Thanks Mate! Appreciate the nice comment. Happy skating, my friend.
this is helping me so much! thank you
great video, ive been practicing parrallel slide, this will help me alot
Meu amigo Shawn, nós brasileiros gostamos da tradução em português! Sou seu fã, não só pelo patinador que é mas também pela pessoa que demonstra na simpatia de suas ações! Que Deus o abençoe sempre!!!
Thanks for your great/comprehensive site, now I can delete all those other videos. I do ice skate and I am just starting RB as a way to offseason prep for skiing. I find your ice and RB technique comparisons helpful and encouraging.
Awesome video! Thanks for posting!!!
amazing tutorial! i understand very well!!
Wow thanks for the tutorial! It helped a lot!
Love the turtorials. Please also show a parallel slide when going backwards!
Great tutorial!!
OMgosh thanks so much ive seen so many videos and I've been trying to get this for weeks! This video finally got me some results!
Awesome! That is great to hear.
Thank you! I see it is an old video but still adding so much value!
I found you thru your street / free skating videos. Was inspired to buy saktes (lates 30s) (Would have bought from you to support your shop but I am Netherlands based). Now I have my skates and loving it!
I love your tutorials man. They are zen.
Thank you, my friend.
The explanation of the counter rotation helped me a lot! Thank you! 😊
My pleasure. Glad it could help.
Great video, thanks.
My pleasure
Cant wait to get out and try this one. Great tutorial Shawn!
Boom! You can do it.
Shop Task A question here, do i tighten my skates as much as possible or not at all. Because from a lot of skating videos that i have seen their skates look pretty loose, but i don't know if i should do that as well. what would you recommend?
I know this was directed to Shawn. But I would say yes. You should have tight laces. Bill actually put out a video a little while back talking about how he actually laces up. He tightens his skates all the way from his toes up to his ankles. I actually do the same. It helps with stability on the leg that you are putting your weight on during the stop. Just my two cents. Hope it helps. Gl :-)
Michael Rice thanks! :)
It is best to tighten your skates completely but some people prefer their skates to be looser around the toes and around the top of the cuff. It is always important to tighten your skates around from the mid foot to above your ankles. This will lock your heels into the back of your skates.
Thanks a lot for this very nice video !
Hockey stop on ice took me a month or so to figure out but now seems so simple: lower your posture during the approach with weight distributed over the middle of the skates, turn the lead plant leg's skate 90 degrees while shifting the weight from the middle of the foot to the heel, sink all of your weight onto the lead leg's heel (if doing on just one leg) or like 75% of your weight on the lead leg's heel and the rest on the trail legs heel (if doing on both skates), your hips and shoulders should naturally immediately follow in turning. The deeper you're "sitting" (butt's lower to ground with deep knee bend), as you're stabilizing yourself after the more balanced you'll be coming out of it. You'll have to be lower the faster you're going during the approach, as well. This process digs the edges of the plant leg(s) into the ice which literally scrapes a thin layer of ice off, providing gradual friction that brings you to a stop.
I don't inline much, but on most surfaces, if you do it exactly like on ice, you'll tip over because the wheels don't dig in, although with some softer wheels, perhaps a bit of the wheel gets worn off, providing gradual frictions that makes a slide possible.
Without special wheels or smoother surfaces, like on asphalt with hard wheels, you'll have to "C cut" much wider on the approach with the lead leg, and sort of segue into the 90 degree rotation as you're skate's coming out of the "top" of the "C" in the "C cut". Your lead foot should be out a bit more in front of the rest of your body, with that foot's lower leg about 45 degrees from the ground (as opposed to a stop on ice where the lead foot is barely in front of you and that foot's lower leg is closer to 70-90 degrees off the ground), and then you really have to sink you weight down and absorb the resistance from the road and your wheels with your ankles, knees, thighs, etc since neither the road or wheels have any give. The lower your butt is and the deeper your knee bend throughout, the lower your center of gravity (which makes is less likely you'll topple forward) and the more strength you can get out of your legs and glutes.
Boom! A lot of good points in there. Great breakdown.
Seems easy
tf
best tutorial ever thank you 👍
Dude, thanks! Your videos awesome.
Very helpful!
I love your style - you rock!
Thank you Carlos.
videos are very to the point and educational. Keep up the good work!
as a side note, I'm only just teaching myself this technique, and I've just been using the slalom into slide technique. I'll try focusing more on that counter balance technique with more of a focused shift in weight to really throw my heels into it. That seems more efficient
Awesome tutorial! Best I've found
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, extremely useful!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Muito bacana as suas dicas. Obrigado pelas legendas em português. Estou sempre acompanhando seus vídeos. Namastê.
Thank you for this video. Great stuff.
My pleasure. Thank you for the nice comment.
Shawn...you the man...thanks for the info...
great videos! I've learned a lot from your videos! :D Greetings from Chile
This was great.
Hi Shawn, love your elaborate collection of vlogs! I've long doubted if I can pull the parallel slide of. Your opening therefore I find brilliant: If you can turn, you can slide. That's the spirit. The flexing of the ankles is something I didn't find in other tutorials. This could be the magic bullet for me! When I get my new bearings and axles delivered I will get right to it! Thnx.
Awesome! Thank you for supporting.
Just got my first pair of inline skates and I'm trying to learn more than a t-stop! Thank you SO MUCH for this! You're an excellent teacher. :)
After 2 year
Anis Laplaya I’m pretty sure she way better after 2 years
@@KING-mw8fj yes i sure tooo
How about now?
@@anismerdas I've become a much better skater, but I haven't drilled this stop lol. Time to change that!
Best tutorial🤗🤗amazing😉
I think this is on my top #2 over best sliding tutorials I have seen!
(And I don't even remember the other one..?)
Thanks soo much, and i Will Be practice all that you said un this tutorial
This is such a helpful breakdown! Seeing how your hands go from your side out in front of you totally made it click for me!
Thanks buttsexio!
You make such good videos, really love them! Keep it up
Thank you my friend.
These practicing strategies seem really solid. Can’t wait to try
very good tutorial compared to so many parallel tutorials out there. it is very important to break down required tiny processes as it also shows the progress. cheers
Thank you my friend.
love your videos, you teach me how to skate
I'll give it a try, always wanted to learn this. Thanks for the video :)
You can do it. Let me know how it goes.
Sure thing. Thanks.
Very good explanation! :) Thank you!
My pleasure! And thank you for all your great videos.
Aww thanks!
Great help
Awesome! Thank you for the feedback.
Still trying to get this one. Super glad for having pads! Thanks for another excellent video. Can't wait to put these techniques into practice
Awesome! Let me know how it goes.
Dude you're ridiculously good at explaining this stuff! So glad I found the channel :)
Thanks brother!
valew pelas dicas muito util show de bola
You have an awesome and very kind way of teaching. I'm a late bloomer to the inline skating world, but I'm glad that I have started skating. It is much more fun than running, and my knees are quite thankful. I am getting better and faster. I definitely need to learn this, as my stopping skills are not very developed.
Thank you!
Thank you Gregory. I love this technique because it is so much fun and it is always better to have different stopping methods.
I'm currently in Kyiv, Ukraine. I may skate a few streets here today. I will send you the video if I do!
Hi Gregory. You and me both. How old were you when skating found you? I'm a year into it, age nearly 49. Possibly the best year of my life! 😀
Yes guru, I only can learn from you, namaste and newen!!
Nice tutorial, man!
Great teacher!
Thank you my friend. Appreciate the nice comment.
big thanks for ur Videos. U r an very enjoyable man, man =)
WOW!! I've been wanting to learn this for a while. Time to try it out! Awesome tutorials Shawn!!
funkypencil! Great name. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks man! I'll practice when i get the time!
Hello man. I express my deep respect to you! Thanks to your video tutorial, this element began to turn out. Namasute.🙂
Great job on the outdoor filming choices this time. It was a lot easier to see at that time of day and the sun wasn't in the shot. Can't wait to try sliding!!!
Thanks Isaac
I agree. Filming into the sun is not a good choice.
This Is actually a very good technique to learn. I am trying this today.
Good luck! I hope you get it.
great breakdown !!! hope to level up sooner!
Boom! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Nice video !
