Each crank (blue or green) has 3 positions: Right, Neutral and Left.
Pink joystick has a revolution joint with the blue crank.
The green crank has a pin that slides in circular groove on the joystick.
Each crank can reach one of its 3 positions while the other crank is at its any position so this mechanism can get 9 positions.

Could you put the blue and green cranks on some sort of sliding mechanism? That way if you wanted to move the joystick diagonally, you can do so since both the x and y axis are not in a fixed position. This should give omnidirectional movement. I don't have any CAD software or experience working with it, I just had an idea I wanted to share.
No need to add more mechanism.
This joystick can move diagonally.
The reason to show 9 positions is to make clear that it can be used for gear boxes.
