Their boat floated away, so Katara tried to use her waterbending to bring it back. But she wasn't able to control her bending very well, and it made the ice around them shake. Suddenly, a bright light came from the center of the iceberg, and it broke apart. Inside, they found a young boy named Aang. His glowing marks disappeared, and he fell unconscious at their feet. Sokka, Katara's brother, was unsure and worried about the strange boy, but Katara insisted they bring him back to their village. At the same time, a nearby Fire Nation ship's crew saw the light too, and their young scarred captain ordered them to follow it.
Sokka and Katara take the unconscious boy back to their village, and their grandmother recognizes the tattoos on his body as those of an airbender. Sokka doesn't believe it because airbenders are supposed to be extinct, but they decide to let the boy rest. Meanwhile, on the Fire Nation ship, the young captain, Prince Zuko, tries to convince his uncle, General Iroh, of what he saw.
Iroh doesn't fully believe Zuko because Zuko's only allowed to go back home and become the next ruler if he catches the Avatar. But after many years of searching with no luck, Iroh thinks Zuko might be imagining things. He wants Zuko to stop obsessing over finding the Avatar and accept that maybe the Avatar is gone forever. However, Zuko is set on finding the Avatar and won't give up.
Aang wakes up and comes out into the village, feeling confused. Sokka finds him, and Aang asks where he is, but then he notices that his flying bison, Appa, is missing. Nobody in the village knows what a sky bison is, but Appa shows up when Aang blows a special whistle. Aang tells the villagers about being caught in the storm and freezing himself in ice, but they find it hard to believe because airbenders haven't been seen for over a hundred years.
Gran Gran tells Aang that Fire Lord Sozin destroyed the Southern Air Temple and all the monks there during the last Great Comet Festival. She realizes that Aang has been stuck in the ice for a hundred years. Aang goes outside to think about this, and Katara comes to check on him. She tries to comfort him and shares that her mother died when the Fire Nation attacked their village years ago. After that, her father and other men left to fight the firebenders, leaving her brother Sokka as the only protector of the village.
In the past century, the Fire Nation has taken control of a lot of the world. Only some areas of the Earth Kingdom and the North and South Water Tribes are still fighting against them. Everyone is suspicious of strangers now. Katara brings Aang to an old firebender ship where she practices her waterbending secretly, but she's still struggling to do it well.
Katara tells Aang that she's the only waterbender left in their tribe, and she's been keeping her bending abilities hidden in case the Fire Nation comes back. Aang gives her some tips on how to concentrate her energy, which helps Katara to waterbend properly for the first time. But then they spot a ship coming towards their village. They hurry back as Sokka tries to get their weak defenses ready.
