  • Musima 1655 HV, made in East Germany probably in early 70's. For those who doesn't know, it's completely hollow thinline archtop. Some wear, but quite good playability, no buzzes with 1,5 mm action. Almost all parts are original except strap buttons and vibrato handle. Wiring is original- bridge- neck+bridge- bridge with low cut- neck with high cut. Middle pot is neck volume and works only in the first position, third pot is master volume. Two machine heads repaired, but work ok. There's a split in the back of the neck, not sure wood or lacquer, runs only in the middle, stops at the ends. Neck is stable and straight, trussrod works, but just in case, I'm adding a spare neck. I added springs under the pickups, so there's a possibility to raise them closer to the strings.

Это хорошая идея, сделать звучки на ней регулируемые.

Hey Dude, I hope you are reading this. I found one of these in the trash today and I want to overhaul it a bit. The bridge didnt seem to look original. It pushed the action to like actual 5 centimeters. Is there a trick with the bridge or what would you counsel me to use as a bridge?

    •  Před 4 lety +2

The brigde is the smallest problem. Start with the neck angle, and probably with neck block reglueing.

I bought one 2 weeks ago. REALLY great sounding guitar!
However: The action is nearly 4.00mm Low E at the 12thfret. I took it to a luthier to get it to 2mm, and it's still just under 3.80mm at the 12th. Has anyone been able to get it to 2mm low E at the 12th? I noticed the bolts for the neck have a very fine thread which I'm scared of stripping, (why I took it to a pro).I don't know if shimming the neck would work. I'm wondering if the neck is shifting due to the fine threads on the neck bolts. Any experiences? Cheers

I don’t know if you’re still having trouble, but I can try to help a bit.
My first thought is that is the guitar has no truss rod, or the truss rod is not functional for some reason, and the neck has bowed forwards over time creating too much relief in the fretboard, a high action is more or less unavoidable without serious work.(fitting a new truss rod and/or reprofiling and refretting) this would provide an explanation for why the luthier was unable to improve the situation much. However, it appears that this model of guitar does have a truss rod (?) so on to possibility no 2:
If the neck is reasonably straight and the bridge as low as it will go, then yes, you have a neck angle problem. This would also explain the situation with the luthier assuming the individual in question simply couldn’t be bothered to do any more than adjust the bridge height. I’d be very surprised if a shim couldn’t be used, indeed there is a video on CZcams showing the restoration of a Musima 1657 which had a shim installed from the factory!
As for the idea that the neck is shifting because of the bolt threads, this type of neck joint appears to be roughly similar in concept to the common Fender style found on many electric guitars, in which case the neck should be firmly tightened against the body. It should be obvious if the bolts are not doing the job: is there a visible gap? Is there looseness in the joint when the strings are off? If you gently try to tighten the bolts a bit more, (just testing, don’t try too hard!) do they feel tight or rotate easily without actually making a change to the neck? (such as closing the aforementioned gap if present)
If it looks tight, feels tight and there’s no difference between strings off and strings on, there isn’t a problem with the bolts.
The other thing to check would be that the body is still structurally sound. If the sides, top, back and the block the neck is actually bolted to are no longer well attached to each other, that would explain having a neck angle problem and ought to be addressed first.

Meant to ask, did it come back from the luthier with the 3.8mm action, or did it have a 2mm action which subsequently got higher with no apparent cause?
