I am a bit surprised by some of the comments, i guess they just didn't watch the whole thing but the video was not at all condemnatory.
You do go hard on it, showing what alternatives exist to use for some components, but then end the video with a positive recommendation of it for that price. All in all, a pretty fair review and a good video.
Personally to me, the rugged appearance is perfect because of how i look and how i dress and i will definitely be getting one of these, the front pocket one with the double side gussets for my canteens. As much as i would like to work directly with an artisan (have worked with a professional tailor before) leathercrafting is a whole different beast with a budget beyond my current means.

I appreciate this comment. Thank you for pointing out the real intention of my review. I never meant it to be bad or good, just an honest review of a particular style from a brand that I actually respect. Not every designer can get every design right, God knows most of mine fail, but I have always respected SB for putting out original designs.

My husband is a military officer and this aesthetic is perfect! Yes, he and I agree that the sleek look is much better for NY doctors and lawyers, but for a man who works in an office with professionals, but also has to throw 6 months of his gear into a cargo shipping container to live on a base somewhere in a desert-Saddleback is the best function and look out there. Thanks for the great review! 😊

I think the two bags are great for their respective clienteles. I'm a physician (surgeon) on the west coast who carriers a Saddlebag Thin Briefcase. I agree that some of their model lines are too rustic for my work environment, however this bag without outside front pockets reminiscent of cargo pants or multiple straps (which as you stated may be redundant) makes it reasonable for me to carry without issue. The nice thing about this bag, is that because the visible signs of wear are desirable, it is liberating in that I don't have to worry about scratches, scuffs, or marks as they become part of the look. The concern about the "drop" between the handle and the top of the bag becomes less of an issue over time as with stretch, I now have a good inch and a half and my knuckles are spared. I love this bag...
That being said, your bags are beautiful and I can see myself coming to you for a hazel Habermas bag to have when I need a formal look. Thank you for a very informative and insightful take.

I am a saddleback client. What I’ve noticed with the style and community of saddleback this bag is supposed to be rustic. I love it. I can go camping, hiking, hunting, & to the office with my bag. In the Midwest, if you walk into a meeting with a saddleback, it catches the eye of the business man.
True leather fans like the scars, the wear, and the character of the leather in my opinion. I would never walk around with a shiny briefcase. But that’s just my opinion.

I concur, as a fellow long time saddleback client. The rustic aesthetic of the leather gives each costumers item an individual character, unique to their own day to day life; it becomes personalised to us.

First, what he's missing is that most of SBL's customers may not be Doctors and Lawyers!
Second, the type of leather that wears, curls, scratches and have natural animal life marks are part of the appeal of their products.
Third, All the metal rings serve multi purpose ideas that Doctors and Lawyers don't need.
    Fourth, the side straps are longer than the center strap for when the bag is over loaded or if a blanket roll or whatever else is captured across the top of the bag, it will still close and support the extra weight. These bags can hold a tremendous amount of weight! I have three SLB bags and I love them for the reasons that I bought them. Rugged, strong and versatile. I fly over 100,000 mile per year and on almost every flight, I get a compliment or an inquiry on my bag. (and that's in biz class where not everyone is a Doctor or Lawyer) The Marcellino bags are indeed beautiful but we are talking two completely different users and comparing them is not fair. Perspective is reality and in my opinion, the reviewer clearly does not posses the imagination to grasp perspective of who would be a buyer. (other than a collector or college kid that likes cool metal stuff}
He totally missed the point of what some people might wanted from a review. I imagine they wanted a review, not a critique.
You are comparing a low production $700 bag to a custom $2500 bag? Reallly?

    • @Jpmarcellino
      @Jpmarcellino  Před 4 lety +6

1 - there are no unbiased reviews, they are all critiques. My opinion. I'm honest and upfront.
2 - i never compared SB to my Briefcases. no comparison.
3 - Scratches might be an appeal but they also degrade the leather in time
4 - I'v been in this business a long time and my "imagination" runs deep on who their buyer is - it is someone with little knowledge of high quality American made goods and very susceptible to simple marketing techniques
4 - BTW here is where I will educate you. that bag is not even a $700 bag it is literally the same as a $70 Chinese bag. I can have the same style and quality of leather made with my logo on it for under $100 and resell it to you for $700. they might even do the same. Here a manufacturer for you to do it too, you just got to be good at marketing like SB - www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Tricut-Business-Slim-Leather-Briefcase_62010349190.html?spm=a2700.7724857.normalList.284.368a6a98sZOfB6

This video has a lot of detail but it misses a key point, and Mr Marcellino acknowledges it up front. He is reviewing this from the point of view of a briefcase maker for lawyers, doctors, etc. There are many professions (like mine, I am an engineer and university professor) where briefcases of the style of SBL fit quite well. In fact, the JP Marcellino briefcases would not fit well in my profession. So the review, while good and interesting, is very much biased.

I work in the humanitarian sector. in defense of the 'rugged briefcase' look, this is where this style fits well. I see it hauled around the world by folks working for groups like MSF or World Vision in urban and rural Africa or South America. The pros in those fields need a field bag for computers and notes. This style (chrome vs. vegetable) of tanned leather works well. For me, I've owned 3 saddleback bags and sold them all. Too heavy. So I bought Horween leather direct from Chicago as well as picked up some camel leather from a buddy and built my own bag to my own specs. Couldn't be happier. I went with solid brass hardware and copper rivets so it all ages fairly uniform. I'm not a pro but I hand cut, pricked and stitched it all by hand. Took 90 hrs. I'd recommend building your own bag. loads of fun and you can build it to hold exactly what you want. Mine was built for a 13
" computer and a 3.5" thick mirrorless DSLR camera. I couldn't afford to pay someone to build it for me but if you can afford the pros, that's even better if you aren't inclined to the craft. Kudos to Mr Marcellino for your target market, for high standards, and exacting purposes. Love it.

Great video! As a leather craftsman myself it reminds me that customer base is important when developing a brand. who is your target customer on average? what are their interests and needs specifically? if it is someone working in a high paying profession then clearly a brand like saddleback is not for them. however, if someone enjoys the rugged look that gives them a sense of tough times and rustic settings, then saddleback has designed a brand that really fits that persons style. You have done an incredible job designing a brand for your own customer base and that in itself keeps you in business. your bags are beautiful and clearly made to last a lifetime and more! saddleback makes mid tier bags designed for people that can pay mid tier prices. and they seem to do it very well. that being said, I agree completely on your stance of "see a craftsman first". people don't realize that paying more for a bag that will last lifetimes is worth it in the end! Thanks for the content! you earned a subscriber! I have no doubt that as I watch your videos I will learn a ton!

I've gotten to know a bit about Saddleback Leather company. They are so much more than a bag maker ; they are a movement. They employ hundreds in Leon Mexico, teaching them a skill and paying good wages in a place where jobs can be scarce and survival is hard. They provide childcare for their employees. They've opened a school that provides quality English-based education for little to no cost. The owners travel the world touching the lives of the impoverished. Their fans know they are part of something meaningful and getting complimented on their briefcase or backpack is a way to acknowledge that their purchases have an impact in this world. These are a few of many reasons to LOVE their products.

I don't think you understand the target market for SBL. the people these products are aimed at are not doctors, lawyers or people sitting in the board rooms. Hell I dont think the guy who owns the company had ever been in a big meeting until after he started SBL.
Most of the people buying this style of bag are going to use it as an every day carry. They will use it to carry on their commute, in the office, at the lunch meeting at the park, when they travel and even probably grandmas christmas party. having see one in person they are good quality for what they are, but are over priced. I personally wouldn't buy SBL but I'm not buying a veg bag either cuz I'm gunna use it and abuse it. I want a Horween CXL lined with a good calf suede.

I would use that particular bag as an overnight bag, not as a briefcase. It, unfortunately,is more money than I would spend on a bag like that. Your briefcases are exquisite. The leather that you use is wonderful. I’m retired so I really couldn’t use one of your briefcases. That doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate it as a gorgeous work of art made with love by yourself. Lastly, I owned and operated a shoe store in the Old Town area of Chicago for 17 years. I grew to know and to love the Italian and Spanish made leather bags and shoes. Never heard of them, i just looked at their website. it is hard to give an opinion without physically seeing it but from a glance, that leather looks like bonded leather to me and most likely it is at that price point. keywords used is "real leather or genuine leather." UK has some great waxed canvas. overall seems ok for the price.
and this "made in England" or even "made in the USA" thing, be aware - made in England by Chinese factory workers. I used to have bags made in NYC garment district, everyone was Chinese and most likely illegal. Made in NYC right? Best thing is to find a real craftsman and deal with him or her one on one.

      @Jpmarcellino  Před 5 lety +5

Ha ha i just have to respond to this comment. Let me give you a little history on "bags you love" - The only thing similar to the Ricky bag and my designs is the round lock we both use which predates RL by about 100 years. Those lock designs were put on early English and American briefcases by real leather craftsman not the factory workers RL uses. That lock design is a Briefcase Makers lock design NOT a handbag makers so the designers at RL stole it from MY industry craftsman if you want to get technical. If you want to get more technical the locks they use are cheap imitations installed with prongs or screws and have fake rivets - the original locks i use are handmade by traditional craftsman from England or Italy and are made exactly the old way by being installed with rivets.
It is funny to note that when a luxury exec and designer from RL came down to visit my workshop in hopes I would mass produce some of their bags which i declined because they are looking for cheap labor, we discussed that lock on my briefcases in length.
and i agree the style doesn't "make it bad, just different" it is bad design that makes it bad.

Unfortunately, I was going to buy my first product from them and ditched the brand entirely. They priced themselves at a point where I refuse to pay their price for something made in Mexico.

    1. I do not like how bulky it is.
    2. I agree about the chrome tanned leather. It does have its place and I do have plenty of chrome tanned leather goods, but I would not get a chrome tanned briefcase.
    3. I do not hate the three buckles, but I would prefer it with just two side ones.
    4. I hate with passion, how the leather strap of the middle buckle goes passed the bottom of the briefcase. Just why?
    5. I do not like that they outsourced their manufacturing to Mexico.
    6. I do not like their choice of leather. It is not bad leather, but it is not good leather. I know they get it from a tannery in Mexico. I wish they would use an American tannery.
    7. The metal ring for the backpack straps under the handle is a design flaw.
    8. I would not have noticed the different metals, but after you pointed it out, I can't unsee it.
    9. The outside side pockets are useless and ugly.
    10. The idea of turning into a backpack is also bad. Buy a backpack if you want a backpack. The excess pieces make it look too busy.
    11. I agree about the shoulder strap connectors: They should not be on the gussets.
    12. Realistically, none of the rivets are going to fail. I understand that there are quality differences, but I liken it to dive watches. A dive watch rated at 12,000 meters is obviously much more durable than one rated at 200m, but how many people that buy dive watches are ever going to take it deeper than 10-15 feet, if even that? Same thing with this, if you use this bag for backpacking or like war, the rivet quality might fail after some time, but nobody would use this bag in war or for backpacking long distances. All of that being said, it is too expensive not to be using the best kind.
    13. The edges should at least be burnished. They don't need to be painted, but at least burnish them.
Overall, it is just too expensive for what it is. If they used a veg tanned leather from an American tannery, better rivets, and if they were making them in America, I would say that the price is worth it, but with the cheaper materials and the fact that they outsourced to Mexico, I do not see how they can justify the price tag.

      Very good points.
Sadly chrome-tan leather cannot be burnished*, only sealed with edge paint, because its tanning process has eaten away too much of the fiber for it to slick into a glossy edge.

I can understand criticism when it comes to quality, but not when it comes to the style. I mean, rustic look is their whole idea, so I don’t see the point of complaining that the bag looks too rustic. Some people prefer rustic look, others prefer more refined look, neither of them is “better” than the other as it’s a personal preference.
But this is a very informative video, much appreciated!

    • @Jpmarcellino
      @Jpmarcellino  Před 5 lety +2

There is nothing wrong with a rustic briefcase, i make them as well but as much as fashion is an opinion there are "wrong and right" things to wear with certain colors or fabrics and certain situations. I've developed My opinions from My experiences in the fashion industry. Most professionals do not have time to figure out what should be worn with what and when. That is why they need fashion advice. In this video I've given style and quality advice. This is especially important for young people entering the workforce or older ones caring about what others think of their fashion. if you want to be a rebel and wear what you wanna wear, more power to you but most people entering the workforce, especially corporate cannot afford to be a rebel and must conform and care about how they are perceived.
In terms of "better" for example if you are a real estate agent and you want to sell me a million dollar property and you are dressed in rustic attire like jeans with a cheap briefcase from staples, i am suddenly going to think you have no clue and are broke and say no thank you. Same goes with a lawyer or doctor or any professional. That's the world. It sucks. And in this example refined IS better.
When it comes to business fashion conformity IS better, so it is not a "personal preference." A briefcase is used primarily in business. I don't see why you would be carrying a briefcase if you have no business. It is a business persons utility and judged like the suit, tie and shoes. This is why a rustic style briefcase makes NO sense, unless you can afford to be a rebel in the business world.

@@Jpmarcellino well no I’d have to disagree with that. If you are a car mechanic or a horse saddler let’s say, that’s where a rustic briefcase like the saddleback style will turn people’s heads and may in fact attract more businesses. Because these businesses are tailored to more humble people to begin with. Whereas having a 2000 dollars shiny briefcase in these cases most people are going to think you are pompous and not trustworthy (I.e., you are some snob out there to get as much money out of people’s pockets as possible). So it really depends on what type of business. Yes for something like law or medical profession you’d want to get some really nice since you are already in the top tier class so carrying a rustic briefcase people are going to raise their eyebrows with a question mark on the back of their heads. My PhD professor (very famous in his field) carries a briefcase that’s also on the bit more rustic side. Not so extreme like this saddleback model but it’s a rustic worn dark dark brown leather (probably really old, I don’t know if it’s veg tanned or chrome tanned it looks a bit like crazy horse leather) with just a flap over it, no closure, and that bag inspired me to get my first custom made briefcase in that color. Mine is vertical briefcase, crazy horse Arcadia goucho leather, with a long flap and a strap on the bottom. I adore it. I got another briefcase that’s lighter weight from Italy with vegetable tanned aniline finished calfskin, hand stitched on the outside with a single running stitch and python sides. It’s a bit on the “rebel fashion” side but not exactly rustic rustic (e.g., it has no buckles) and it’s gorgeous and absolutely appropriate for my line of work. So there’s all types in between it’s not just shiny sleek vs saddleback rustic.

Great review. I agree with most of it. Unfortunately, most people are TV programmed to only want something based on what some celebrity touts. If the average person knew their "high end" bag was made in a factory in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, etc, by 100's of women making $2/hr they might not feel so puffed up about it. many of those brands originated in style houses and were made by craftsmen. Machine template cut parts, machine stitched parts, with a logo, is not worth the money they command. This guy makes real craft level items and I watch and listen, and try, and listen watch repeat. One day, I might produce a bag at his level, but I am not doing it to sell, but as gifts. I laugh at women spending $15,000.00 for a purse, soley to be seen or brag about it.

    Good Review.
I wouldn’t say it’s Retarded, LMAO, but it is amusing to hear such a detailed and opinionated assessment.
I agree with some of the points but the greatest takeaway is that folks have different ideas of use.
The Yankee accent, Religious, and Southern comments fit the profile perfectly.
Like I say, I appreciate the blunt candor.
I have quite a bit of Veg Tanned Leather and understand and appreciate the difference.
You make a great point about the difference between making one briefcase at a time for a rich yankee atheist doctor or lawyer, and supplying a broad demand for retarded southern outdoorsmen, blue collar workers, and college kids in jeans.
Down here “briefcase” is probably a bit of a misnomer. We don’t limit use of the Saddleback stuff to briefs, underwear or paper. I carry guns, tools, iPads, water bottles, cameras, lunch, ammunition, books, knives and such stuff. The Backpack adaptability being useful as well.
As for the practicality of a College Kid spending $700 on such an item, I’d say it’s completely practical when The President is cancelling your student debt. When it comes to College, Practicality went away decades ago.
So all in all I appreciated your detailed informative and entertaining opinion.

I have several Tucker Saddles and I like the veg tanned leather, but the leather of this old Saddleback has definitely taken on the slick shiny appearance of veg tanned over the years. Mine never collapsed into a cloth like floppiness as others have noted. I carried it everyday to work for 10 years. It has served me well.

Marcellino’s review is bold on honest. I am a leather crafting hobbyist, and there’s just no comparison between saddlebacks bag and marcellino bag. You are comparing bridle leather to chrome tanned leather, saddle stitch to machine stitch, bespoke to mass production. People who said they prefer the saddleback has obviously no knowledge of leather what so ever. If you want rustic characteristics and good quality, go with horween that is saddle stitched at minimum. Mass produce stuff for 700 dollars? I would rather add another 400dollars to buy a baseline handcraft model made of veg tanned leather

I think this guy is knowledgeable but way too biased towards his target demographic.
    1) Most Americans today can’t even cover a $500 emergency expense without putting it on a credit card, let alone afford a $2000-3000 briefcase.
    2) Most Americans aren’t lawyers and doctors, and don’t need an ultra-refined $3000 briefcase. I think most average Americans don’t even like the style and fashion associated with upscale luxury bags. They might be clean and simple, but they’re boring in comparison to an Indiana Jones-style briefcase like Saddleback.
    3) people like functionality. Saddleback’s briefcases probably outcompete this guy’s products in the functionality department.
    4) Chrome tanned leather is superior to vegetable tanned leather. The Cr salts form inner-sphere complexes with the carboxyl moieties in the collagen fibers (through dative bonding mechanisms), and act as a polymerization catalyst linking the fibers together. This makes them more thermally and chemically stable, and you don’t have to worry about it getting rained on and staining so easily.
If a saddleback briefcase gets rained on, it’s completely fine. If a $3000 vegetable tanned briefcase gets rained on, it might ruin it lol.
Saddlebacks products might be made in a factory, but they cater to the average American. They make rugged, durable, and stylish briefcases accessible to the masses, and these types of products is what fuels the industry. Not the part time leather craftsman who only caters to the upper class.

I always get offers for me to send my bags so people can review them for a price. I've never done that. I think both types of reviews (maker and user) have their value. I'm always upfront. I'm not trying to put something down for the sake of putting it down so i can sell my product. To me it is not even a product it is my original artwork that i put out in the world.
