Pro tip: familiar in pathfinder have the ability share spells which specifically say that spells with range of personal works on them even if they don't match the creature type of the spell, so things like enlarge person works on them ,mage armor and so on, the best part is that things like dragon form also work , transform your familiar in a huge dragon and send him to kill the bad guys , which work better with an EK since he have d10 and full bab while still can achieve 9th level spells , mauler archetype works even better since you boost STR and can pick Mauler endurance feat that gives a +2 healt x Hit Dice. I'm personally using this with a ride build with my EK although i've gone for the Improved familiar rout for RP. You can access a familiar with every class(exept the ones that specifically say that you can't take a familiar like the blade bound magus archetype) using Eldritch Heritage-Arcana (+ skill focus knowledge (arcana)) counting as your level - 2. You can take this to the next level with the Eldritch Guardian Fighter archetype - it forgos the first 2 feats but at level 2 he share every combat feat with his familiar ( and he count his fighter level for the familiar progression). I suggest the arcane strike+riving strike combo (+1 bonus dmg /5 CL and - 2 to saving throws) and/or power attack. What i'm trying to say is : familiar can be your best buddy in combat if built correctly. Sorry for eventual grammar errors english is not my language.
I love how useful my imp familiar, Faust, is from my Asmodean Advocate cleric, especially with all the buff spells you can apply to it. Combined sage and parasite, and he is perfect for the thematic devil on your shoulder whispering god knows what information in your ear. He's amazing for scouting, especially in high humanoid density areas, can take over control of someones body when you need an extra hand or need someone to be seen doing something they shouldn't. He also makes a good wingman at the bar.
A very cool thing to do with a familliar is to give it wands. Since it share skill ranks with its master, if the master have a good use magic device score, and the familliar can hold the wand and pronounce the command word, you basically get an scoundary caster. No need for advanced familliar : an raven or a parrot can do it as well as any familiar with a ring of animal speech. By the way a soul gem of a random peasant it worth 100 po of material coponent for a spell or an magic item . A rare and powerful creature like an dragon , an mid/high-level adventurer or an important person like a king can be worth 1000-5000 po
Another notable method of getting a familar is the Eldritch Guardian Fighter. It shares your abundant combat feats, and it shares your amazing BAB as well, so it's great for Maulers. Magical Child Vigilante used to be a great mention but it was utterly nuked by Ultimate Wilderness rules errata. A moment of silence. Hilarious combination: Figment/Sage familiar. I once played at a table with a guy who had this. He had a familiar that was made up entirely out of his own imagination... and it knew things that he did not.
Indeed! Though it wasn't smarter than him, it -did- have knowledge ranks that he didn't. He was also high on pesh, like, 90% of the time. That might have had something to do with it.
@@d6damage93 Unchained rogues can also gain a familiar as rogue level - 4 starting from level 10 as a feat. It is one of the unchained rogues advanced rogue talents. It pairs well with boon companion which allows for +4 levels to an animal companion or familiar. Effectively making it a wizards equivalent level familiar. Granted you also need to take minor magic and major magic feats as pre-requisites but it makes for an interesting pseudo caster. Particularly with Improved familiar of small size and taking enlarge creature as your major magic spell. This grants you the ability to use it as a flanking partner starting from level 11. The liminal sprite is very effective for this given it's flying and uses a rapier with weapon finesse.
There is one form of familiar you forgot to mention in your video that has some very dangerous options. The Poppet in Adventurers Armory 2 on pages 30 to 31. When combined with some Archetypes they can be truly terrifying.
My favorite improved familiar is the Ion wyrd, the rakshasa is super fun. I think the air elemental is a fantastic choice for a mystic theugist though.
I like air elemental as well. It's ability to deliver touch attacks combined with high movement speed and fly by attack is great for delivering shocking grasp at range.
I was surprised that you didn't mention the Thrush. It is basically a Raven, but then it gives you a +3 bonus to Diplomacy instead of Appraise. Handy for your Enchanter Wizard that already gets a bonus to Diplomacy.
Indeed. It is part of a diplomatic wizard build. At level 1: - Specialize in the Enchantment School; - Take a Thrush as Familiar; - Take Friend In Every Town as one of your traits; - Take Skill Focus (Diplomacy) as (one of your) feat(s); - Put 1 rank in Diplomacy. --> Your level 1 Wizard now has a Diplomacy of +13, even without having to put any points in Charisma. Additionally, if you are a human or half-elf, you still have a bonus feat left (that you can choose to be Persuasive if you want to go all in on Diplomacy).
Tattooed scorcer archetype gave you a familiar that becouse a liveing tattoo at will and 1 dice of damge on all blood line spells and any spell of a set school .
Aberrant bloodline sorcerers and bloodragers can also get a familiar by way of the Aberrant Tumor feat. One that I find fun to do with the familiar in this case is giving it the Mauller archetype, allowing it to fight alongside its master and return to its master to top itself back up with its Fast Healing 5 so long as its attached to its master
The Impundulu is a really good choice for an evil witch. It uses the stats of an Imp or Quasit and gives the witch access to a second patron. The available patrons are limited, but more spells is never a bad thing.
Very good video, as always. Here is a suggestion.....Evolved Familiar for +8 to UMD Give it some wands.... Fireball Haste Magic Missile ...perhaps some others.
D6Damage Imp, Fairy Dragon, Tidepool Dragon, Calligraphy Wyrm, or azata lyrakien are all wonderful shoulder cannons to use wands/scrolls for you. A lenient DM might allow you to take Evolved Familiar (Tentacle) to give an improved familiar that can speak the ability to wield wands/scrolls so they can UMD them for you.
familliar archetypes opens nice tricks like a combinaison of the sage and figment familliar : it have high intelligence, tons of skill points, knowledge related feats, and the skilled evolution (wich can be knowledge) so it can cover pretty much all your knowledge needs and it reappear at no cost every day. Best of all : it is hinted in the fluff it is a double personallity given form by incounscious illusion magic. Wich is hilarious considering you can build a character with 5 intelligence with such a familliar ! A bloodline familliar have special abilities depending of your bloodline emissary familliar with the luck domain d20 is awsome a protector familliar is awsome. It have hp equal to yours, and can 1/2 of all damage you take. Improved protector familliars have often fast healing. You basically multiply you hp by 2 with such a beast scout familliar are simply better scouts
One that interests me is the Parasite Archetype. Basically it allows your familiar to infest a victim at least 2 sizes larger who is helpless/willing (like someone asleep) and creep into their brain. So any insect, a rat, raven, solid choices for targeting people. Once per day, At lvl 3 they can effectively cast Suggestion on the target, 7 Dominate Person, and 15 Dominate Monster, using the masters spellcasting ability score for the save. (or CHA if you can't cast spells) treated as if he cast said spell. It has quite a few weaknesses though. It needs Bluff and Stealth to help avoid being discovered and killed respectively. Break Enchantment can kill it regardless of stealth. It also loses most of the familiar perks. If the infested dies, the parasite risks dying, it could exit the host as a full round action though so if you know he's gonna die, he can just exit the body.
I got a familiar by stealing it from a nest, is a baby magic beast, my gm allow me to have it, it stats are the dodo stats, until level 7, it speaks and get the climb speed his father had, but I was a bard, not a wizard or sorcerer, how do I get the familiar legaly? I had the solution, I retrain my bard to the duettist arquetype, I got the familiar legaly and use it in my adventures, I also had to pay 1000 gold because my friends wanted to sell it, I didn't, so I had to give up 1000 gold... It hurts but I really wanted that familiar, it was super cute, also a bird that can dance and sing, worth it
D6Damage Terracotta Soldiers can be worthwhile as can Homunculi. Though my favorite constructs are Tattoo Guardians, especially awoken ones as a Cohort. Trompe L'oeil are perhaps the most powerful constructs one can make.
So... I know that I'm probably not going to get a reply, but any chance you could give some advice for a Liminal Sprite familiar? I'm going to try and make an Eldrich Scion Magus soon with a Liminal Sprite Bloodline Familiar, any advice? Obviously Liminal Sprite isn't going to be gained at level 1 - but a level 7 goal. Level 5 I'll get a Sprite, still working on Level 1... Maybe butterfly?
First, Eldrich Scion is a good choice. Definitely make use of your charisma based skills, so you can take full advantage of your sprite's repartee skill. Also, I'd say go with a charismatic race. As for your starting familiar, butterfly would work fine. You're going to replace it anyway.
The best you've got is the improved familiar feat. Some of your options, like imp or elementals, are monsters, but if you want something that can fight, unchained summoner will be more what you're looking for.
Unfortunately, Xorn are CR 6, too powerful to be a familiar. I would say you have 3 options. 1) use a weaker creature's stats, like an earth elemental or mephit to represent the bound outsider 2) your player could take a level in summoner or 3) the Xorn could give your player its true name which would allow the player to call on it, like the planar binding spell
For the conversion there might be some templates that you could try, like the Young template. You could also find a smaller creature and just call it an allosaurus.
Your videos are so hard to watch, we don't need to know about who can get a familiar because we already know because we're playing the damn game. As a bard I took the eldritch heritage feats to get a familiar and took a butterfly. The give a 3 to perform, so that is tons of skills for a bard.
Yeah with the Eldritch Heritage feat and Arcane Bloodline, any class could have a familiar.
That's true. There are lots of exciting options.
