I am been a nurse for almost 20 years and my tips for you and everybody out there is :
    First:
    That happens with everybody,
Don't look at yourself as a victim.
    Second:
Believe in yourself, you can do it
    Third:
    Study, study study everyday
Don't be afraid to ask and learn
More you know more confident you will be.
Learn everything about the ward/ unit you are working.I mean everything( diseases / procedures/ protocols/ routines.
Don't let people put you down, you will always find someone to tell you : you can't do it, you are not capable...
Become knowledge about everything around you and you will find yourself confident and the job enjoyable .
    This does not come overnight,
    That baby steps .
    Get better everyday
    And never stop studying
    God bless

Can you honestly say you love your job? I'm afraid I am getting more and more hardened the longer I work as a nurse. People are demanding, rude, and often ungrateful. I didn't get into the field for a thank you but it still hurts. I'm approaching one year and I'm still just as miserable. I am in a deep depression because of it. I worked so hard for what I thought was my passion and now I'm lost.

Kaitlyn S I am in the same train. I’ve done it for 5 years and I am seriously considering quitting nursing and doing something else since I have lost complete balance of my life and mental and physical health. Lots of love and clarity to you too. I hope you figure this out too. I am currently working on it. If there is anyway I can help I would love to.

I remember hating my first job in nursing. The facility was very understaffed and the nurses I worked with were awful. I felt like I was putting my license in jeopardy working there. I quit after less than 2 months. Luckily nurses are in great demand so I was quickly able to find another job in an area of nursing that was less stressful and more my pace. My advise, DON'T GIVE UP! If you find that you're constantly miserable working where you're at, try switching it up to a different area of nursing. There are so many fields of nursing now that I'm sure you would be able to find one that's best suited for you.

I love this. I'm volunteering in the ED to get experience before applying to nursing school. I'm a super bubbly happy person but after leaving the hospital everyday, I feel drained. Especially, after being around aggravated patients. I feel bad for the nurses who have to deal with disrespect and long hours. I'm definitely debating whether this is the right career step. I'll stick with my commitment but I'm glad I volunteered vs jumping into a program first.

Or try Sales/Marketing. At least training is short and cheap, and the pay is very good for the top employees (decent for mid range). Also, all industries need skilled sales/marketing people. And lastly, bubbly and happy personality is a strong asset.

Hi!! Sorry if my english sucks a bit... I'm from Chile and i'm a RN. Your video was just what i needed. It's so true that nursing is a really hard career and i'm feeling pretty bad sometimes when i ask myself the same question you read from the mail. It sucks to feel you're not too good for this job and i even hated it many times, and it's worse when your colleagues don't support you, or like you said, they forgot they were students too (in Chile we have a phrase: "The cow forgets she was a calf" haha)
I think also its so important to be humble and open to learn from others. Thanks for this video, it was so inspiring!!

As a new nurse going on my second month and halfway through orientation this was really helpful to watch. I genuinely come home feeling depleted and upset and just overwhelmed that my job doesn't bring me joy. I honestly feel like I should've done something simple and a lot of the time it takes a special moment with a patient to remember why I chose this path in the first place. I'm working nights and probably will continue to do so at least for the next year just to make more money to pay my hefty college loan. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and encouragement to fellow nurses- you effect people in such a positive way.

I work on a wonderful floor with very supportive nurses but I still question myself and constantly ask "What have I gotten myself into? Am I cut out to be a nurse?" I am told by more seasoned nurses that EVERYONE feels this way but if you stick with it the feelings pass. Thanks for your encouraging words and practical advice. I can't make reliable decisions on my own. I feel like nobody is talking about anything really at work. Not the pressure, not the insecurities. All of the colleagues seem to be saying that if you can't handle it you're not cut out for this job, leave. I have been feeling so down. But this made me feel better. Plus I realized that I have never been in the same job for more than 4 months so how could I have learned everything! No chance...

My local hospital in florida has the best and busiest ED and hires new grads that go straight into the ED, my cousin being one of them. Same with another niece of mine, she's in the SICU straight out of nursing school

Great advice EmpowerRN! Have a very healthy respect for fear!, that will do well for you in nursing. Also, know what you don't know! It is impossible to know everything, things change so much in the medical field. Always look up up info and ask, ask, ask! I didn't know how to do a certain type of O2 tank, break it open but I asked...know your the things that don't change like safety issues, assess;abc, your 1st year is beyond hard. Ahh I could go on and on but just keep learning and have faith in yourself!
One more thing; before you call a doctor make sure you know what you want to ask and have vitals ready if needed. So much to learn but hang in there, all of seasoned nurses will glad you did and so will the patients(even if they don't show it all of the time!)
xoxoxo to all of us nurses everywhere!

Thank you so much for this video. I am still in nursing school but every time we have simulation lab I manage to screw something up. I feel like I'm not smart enough to do this sometimes and simulation lab makes me feel like I'm stupid. I am so glad that we can make mistakes in simulation lab and no one gets hurt but it scares me to death to think I could make a med error in real life. I feel like I'm not making the connections I need to make, especially when I'm looking at vital signs and comparing the medication to the MAR. I've been really down lately wondering if I chose the wrong profession and it helps to know other nurses feel this way.

it's funny because before I was watching this I am doing externship as a medical assistant. I have messed up when it comes to documents and got yelled at , I have spoken to my manager because I was basically sitting down for 2 hours doing nothing (I would restock rooms) in the middle and they would make this other extern who is in my school (I have no issues with her) do all the sick patients. I got so pissed wanting to give up , luckily I received great advice from a medical assistant there, she lifted my spirits up.thos video helped me a lot knowing new grads do mess up and do get yelled at by those who appear as a mean personality type. I find this to be both good and bad. it could either make.u learn from.it or hurt by their approach because they were once in your shoes. it takes time to learn and adjust. I use to think Makin mistakes would not get me anywhere and I would feel close to giving up , but now I imagine myself doing good and be living in myself and having confidence. love what u do , and get the job done and ask all questions u need to know, never be afraid.

Hi Caroline. What a great video. One of the most rewarding parts of my job as a nurse can be mentoring the nursing students and new grads. I always tell myself, "remember what it was like to be a baby nurse". I am about to start my Post Graduate in Emergency Nursing in Australia. I assume it may be a little different to what I would learn in the US, but the principles would be the same. Would you have any advice for me or others about to start a post graduate at uni? Thanks for all your resources. Love Nath.

Hi Caroline. You do amazing videos. I am starting my fitness journey, actually in the elliptical now. I was wondering if you'd be willing to do a fitness routine video? I have followed your juicing and protein shake videos but I am curious to know how many days you go to a gym, do cardio, yoga, etc? I am currently enrolled in a 6 week challenge, doing crossfit classes and doing cardio at my other gym As well. I can honestly say after just one week of clean eating and consistent, butt kicking workouts, my 12 hour shifts are not as painful. My stamina and self confident have also improved. My mental clarity has improved as well. I look forward to hearing from you and thanks for your incredible videos. You are a beautiful inspiration, inside and out!!! Loni

I know it is a bit of a ways away... but I think I will do the same thing this year! I just don't think I will have time prior to then :( but I guess late is better than never right? So stay tuned for that!! Lots of love, - Caroline

It makes me sad to hear stories where other health care providers are rude or abusive to nurses. I hope these nurses understand it has nothing to do with them, in reality, it is the people with low confidence who are more aggressive.

Karla Plascencia - I can understand how other healthcare professionals would feel that way towards nurses! Nurses are some of the most horrible people on the planet! They are petty, immature, spiteful little bullies and control-freaks - and they stab each other in the back all the time! They deserve exactly what they get!

Thank you for your video. I am getting ready to graduate in May from an ADN program, where I will further my education and get my BSN. I am from a great school, as they offer more clinical hours than some of the BSN programs. There are several areas available to work that are hiring for GN positions. I am confused as to why you say that the only places that hire are the positions that are not very good. These are the openings: OR, ICU, Med-surg, Labor and Delivery, Float pool, telemetry, Transplant, ER, Progressive care...to name a few. Do you not think these are good areas to work in...and if not, why?
