People thought I was lying when I said after 12 years I was burnt out and mentally drained from working in the medical field. It is not for everyone. I so feel the "life is being sucked out of me"
I'm sorry they didn't believe you, but as long as you followed what your heart wanted, you win. I hope you've moved onto more exciting and fun opportunities that suit you better ☺️ much love and light
Those traveling nurses make bank, though!
I'm feeling burnt out now. So much has changed.
@@tamarawiggins4565hasn’t it though?! I’m an RN in the UK and I feel so disheartened now. I know I’m not doing the best for my patients anymore because of the nurse to patient ratio and lack of resources. The guilt I feel is enormous.
I’m 11 years in and I’m seriously considering walking away.
Please take care of yourself!
1 year and 5 months and I’m already there :(
It’s sad. Most people go into healthcare because we all genuinely want to help people. The jobs have their pros and cons like every other job, but the cons feel like they drown out the pros sometimes. I’m 29 but me and my coworkers and friends, are all so burnt out. I feel like I hate people more than ever some days.
It's the nature of the beast; just remember you're not exactly seeing people at their best. They're sick, wounded, and generally in distress. It's not carte blanche for them to be dicks, but this isn't what they're usually like.
I’m sorry. And thanks for all you do!
You know I chose healthcare cause I want to help people too. However, after I learned that Health Care is also a business I was like you know, lets study of the health administration aspect more so than the medical aspect. Took me longer to get a job but they pay out and not having actually deal with patients, is definitely a plus.
Meanwhile some of us have to wait ten years to get the services we need because the doctors are pathetic. The nurses can be even worse.
It's the Corona backlash! Everyone became paranoid, nasty and selfish!!!! Good on you for surviving!
Just remember, 3 years ago, you were heroes. Now, you guys are getting treated like fast food employees
3 years ago they were still treated like fast foid employees. Nothing has changed and nobody cares
Nurses are always heroes. Have been for all time. And if hospitals were run by caring, considerate people (not mega millionaire psychopaths), then working conditions would be more bearable. Shorter shifts. More breaks. Better pay. Making the environment more enjoyable, etc. But they understaff and overwork to line their own pockets. Unfortunate for ALL and more dangerous to patients. But that's capitalism.
So true

This is why when my grandmother was in the hospital I did what I could to help the nurses. I'd clean the room while I was there and did a lot of the minor things like gave my grandmother baths, changing her, go through my grandmothers meds to ensure her they were right so she'd wouldn't argue with them and always asked what else I could do and did it. Sometimes I'd hear the nurses during shift change "you get room 412 but I'm going to be popping in there too, I like that room" or they would to "YAY I get 412!"
Then they would walk in like "heyyyyy granny! you got me again tonight! ya need anything?" Then look at me and go "did you eat today? I know you've been here all day with your grandmother, make sure you eat" They became like an extended family lol
That’s such a wonderful story. At my facility we’re not allowed to have family help with ANYTHING but whenever I see that the family member is capable and willing to learn the proper way to do things I’ll let them do what they want. There is not nearly enough hours in the day for me to take care of each of my patients properly so I’m so thankful when someone is there to help
That's was so sweet of you to take care of your granny, you have a wonderful heart, there's nothing like your granny's love, plus you gave the nurses a helping hand, bless your heart 😊
When my dad, who was a bit, um, demanding, was in the hospital, I did as much as I could that didn’t involve something the medical staff NEEDED to do for observation (like bathing). I’d lift him up on the pillow, help with bed sheet changes, get whatever he needed (warm blankets, soda, stuff like that). When I’m a patient, I’m as accommodating and appreciative as I can be.
See, this was me with my grandpa. Whereas my Aunt was the one freaking out cuz she “had to spoon feed [her] father”😢
@@Robynhoodlum I find it a bit funny or ironic(?) how you, his grandchild, is more willing to help out the hospital staff by doing the little things whereas your aunt, his DAUGHTER, is freaking out about feeding him (was this a bit mean of me?)
No but they really do be asking for cigarettes lol. The funniest ones are the patients who actually go to the store that’s 10 mins away, get the cigarettes, smoke outside then come back in and expect to go back to the same room they just left. Naw sir you have to check yourself back in and wait lol
Back in the day they would walk or wheel themselves out to the front of the hospital and smoke half the day. Some with IV poles and/or oxygen canisters. We would have to go find them. As soon as they were in bed… I can’t breathe, I need my fan and some oxygen… and when is dinner???
maybe just a nicotine patch or two?
@@driftingdruid Some patients are very understanding and accept it. Others, not at all. A nicotine patch doesn't the same quick hit like a cig does. Patches are much slower and level. You would be surprised just how physically combative some folks are willing to get if they can't have their absolute full way.
I smoke three packs a day, but I just had to quit cold turkey twelve days ago. I am still in the hospital after breaking my fibula, tibia, and having surgery for it. Tomorrow they are transferring me by ambulance to an inpatient rehab for a week. I have had several AWFUL experiences in this almost two weeks so far, but 95% of the people have been brilliant. They very much understand why on three occasions I have just wanted to light a damn cigarette!
Funny thing, as I was dragging my way from the back deck to the front porch to call an ambulance, all I grabbed in those four hours of screaming out in pain, were…wallet, phone, phone charger, lighter, and FIVE PACKS OF CIGARETTES.
People think this is a joke but this is reality.
I've been am RN for over 16 years, and cannot imagine working in ER. I work in Observation now, and even there young nurses want to get out because of the stress. If you are a patient, please be kind to us!
This. Kindness costs nothing, yet when a patient actually shows appreciation I almost don't know how to respond because of how nasty some people are to those just trying to help.
I have no issues with being kind… when they’re kind in return. It’s pretty bad when another nurse calls out the one that’s being nasty because they’re being nasty with you. I was glad when the nice one took over.
@@daem2237 exactly.
Im always very polite. It's the only way to be. I was in the observation area a few weeks ago starting at midnight. The nurse who came in cracked me up! Agree had a sense of humor welcoming to "where the beds are much better.". She wasn't kidding. Im grateful to all i come in contact with. Even more so if s patient is mean and i hear it.
@@MsAubreysometimes the nurses are rude because they are at the end of themselves. We're human too.
Worked in the ER for 6 years. Dealing with the COVID pandemic and all the nasty people it brought out drove me to switch specialties. I used to love the ER, I really truly did.
You deserve a change and a revival of your spirit- people became soul suckers during the pandemic- surprises me that more murders didn't happen!
What specialty?
I have always tried to be courteous and decent to health care workers.
I try to keep my call light use to a minimum, sometimes to my detriment.
I'm doing what I can to help!
@@OO-be3jz I'm working in an outpatient internal med clinic at the moment.
You need a raise
During my 17 years in healthcare it has become more and more soul-sucking as the years go by and as people seemingly become more and more unhinged and entitled. I'm not your mother, I'm not your concierge, I'm here to help, but the abuse from both patients and hospital administration is exhausting.
“unhinged and entitled” is a succinct way of putting it
"This is a Hospital, not a hotel."
Abuse feels like an understatement at this point
I'm also not a,waitress for the family
My mother is an ER doc and I just remember as a kid her coming home and venting after some entitled nonsense ( I think someone was complaining about wait time for an ankle sprain when someone else came in for a heart attack and she was there first why did he get to go)
I just remember her venting to me "It's a hospital-not burger king- you cant always 'have it your way' "
Austin is slowly losing his innocence
I love that Steve is SO good at this that it’s easy to forget that he’s playing EVERY character, and makes them all distinct individuals. Austin is so precious, Ben is the jaded veteran, Rich is the cynic using humor to cope, then there is Patagonia doctor, and the “you won’t believe this one” EMT, all of the other nurses and techs, AND all of the different patients. The man is flat out talented.
Yep... slowly turning into Houston.
He doesn't realize he is actually in the psych ward and only thinks he's a nursing assistant...
Admin tried to do a call bell audit. If you've got your light on more than 100 times a day, you probably don't need a nurse.
When I was a charge nurse, I had to run the call light report and then “discuss” why the call lights weren’t being answered in a timely manner 🙄 I hated this stupid process that the upper management (who never worked a day on the floor as a healthcare worker) tried to hold the staff accountable for this crap. Everyone is busy taking care of the patients, and some people just need to wait
@jgprn2428
Extra staff would help, but that would be too easy and too obvious for admin to solve!😢
This reminds me of where I work on night shift right now. We may have maaaaybe 10-12 minutes at a time without a call bell ring and it's all from the same few people. Do they ever sleep? 😭
@@bhnurse16exactly!
Emotionally I am drained working in the ER. I cut my hours down there to almost nothing to focus on another career. Nursing used to be the dream job. 😪
Oh, please do not give up on nursing! Even ICU is less stressful than ER!
I’m sorry you’re stressed. ER work is stressful and you can barely ever sit down.
Nurses / medical staff/ docs aren’t paid nearly enough. 😢
Meanwhile MediCare is cutting payouts to docs.
I give all the credits to the nurses who work in an ER. They see all kinds of things everyday and no two days are alike. Full moon, let’s just say, The weirdness gets even more bizarre …. Be kind to them. It’s not easy. God bless all in the medical field..
So true about the full moon thing. So many people deny it, but the medical field sees the impact the most. If the moon cycle can impact tides, and we humans are 60% water, then the moon cycle can definitely impact a person’s hormones/behaviour.
It’s not the medical field that burns out health workers, it’s the money grubbing medical investors that see ultimate profits while spending the least money they can.
Exactly & it's so sad
Not having mandatory ratios is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. There are entire units that can't be staffed, that COULD be earning $$$ for the hospitals, but nurses are too burnt out to do bedside care.
You mean... investors want a return on their money?! How shocking! Who knew that investors wanted profit?!
Perhaps this could be an argument for state healthcare. The state's "shareholders" are the people, so, in theory, state hospitals would be managed for the people...
@@HighAdmiral I work at a non profit organization. It’s the same thing even when “profit” shouldn’t be involved.
@@HighAdmiralExcept we've seen what state hospitals are like and... no. Just no. 😱
Similar experience in the educational field. Someday I am so frickin tired of kids trying to hit kick scratch bite me or spit in my face. We have kids whose parents didn't bother to quit alcohol or drugs while pregnant or whose parents, instead of caring for and teaching their kids, abuse and neglect them, or provide an opposite example of how to human. There is a crisis in the form of a shortage of people willing to put up with the disrespect and abuse. Those of us still in the field are getting burned out trying to do our job and someone else's too. Someday if you find out that you have no choice to to homeschool you will know why.
From everything I’m hearing lately, teachers are just as bad, if not worse. I know we are only hearing the bad cases but with all the woke stuff, people SHOULD home school. It takes an act of Congress to fire a teacher but when they’re teaching things they shouldn’t? 😠
@@myopinion4108 Just one question:
*How is teachers telling students about sex identity and sexuality comparable to literal abuse and neglect!?*
Seriously! Why are you focussing on something like that, which probably isn‘t as bad as it‘s seen seeing how in the same spirit a book was banned from school that had a gay penguin couple just being romantic parents. Since this apparently isn‘t because the penguins are gay, shall we now ban every kids medium that has something romantic in there? Shall we ban the Disney classics like beauty and the beast, lion king, and snow white from schools, because there is always at least one love relationship in there? Restricting teachers from talking about sex identity and sexuality is done in exactly the same spirit as the book bannings, and distracts from and creates problems rather than fixing ones like those mentioned in the original comment.
Sorry for the rant and turning things completely political. I won‘t answer to any heated political comments, since I get the urge to throw up imagining a long hyperpolitical hateful discussion under a steveioe skit. So use this chance to debunk me and put some people at ease. To make this comment now as hypocritical as possible, I say (and definitely mean it), that I‘d commence in tolerant calm discussion though.
Have a nice day.
@@myopinion4108 I don't teach kids anything about sexual orientation or any other nonsense the political talking heads are going on about. I am just trying to teach kids to use words and not hit people when they have a conflict or to not pick their noses in public and eat their boogers and other "woke" stuff like that. The political talking heads have given everyone such a bizarre skewed idea of what teachers do. If people enjoy kids who hit and eat boogers I guess there is nothing I can do about that.
@@light6230 - Then you’re one of the good teachers! It’s all about teaching math, spelling, science, reading… That’s all. Not sexual anything! There is no reason for that. You are obviously one of the good teachers that we need. It’s hard to put kids in private schools as it’s very expensive, but very worth it if we can’t pick teachers like you. It’s just so sad. There is no reason to teach our babies sexual ANYTHING! Leave that to parents at HOME! Thank you for your response and I respect you very much. We should all be able to pick the good teachers. It shouldn’t be political or sexual EVER!
And as for the violence & eating boogers, we should all agree on teaching them better! Idk where you are or what grade you teach, but I’d request you to teach my kids! I agree with all you said. We should teach facts & not fantasy. There’s enough to study & retain. We don’t need to learn silliness, just the basics. No booger eating & no violence! I (we, in general) appreciate teachers like you who care & want to teach our babies how to act & survive in the world. Nothing more & nothing less. You are the ones who need a raise!! ❤️
After 20+years in clinical. Mental instability is an understatement 😪 You cant pay some folks enough to go back to healthcare. EVER
Im an ER tech, and no lie I have had this EXACT patient interaction 🤣
I wish I could count how many times this happened to me. One wanted me to "run to the store" for him and gave me a whole shopping list. This guy was A/O... I kid you not.
My body physically gave up when I worked as a nurse... I quit my last job after I was told i took too many of my sick days after developing asthma from catching a respiratory bug from kids at the school i worked in. I could hardly get to work without stopping to catch my breath.
I don't even think i want to be a nurse anymore.
Best comment so far! I can respect this but people bitching about patients? They need another job, not affecting people’s health! Good luck to you friend! 👍🏼
Sick days are for when someone is sick!! Just goes to show how the system is run by the worst of the worst. Our society lacks in this department more and more by the day.
“This place is sucking the life out of me” I felt that
Having worked in emergency it sure does suck nearly everything out of you. It can be so rewarding but brutal to .
I’m the same way wanting to quit every two weeks at the pharmacy. The customers really do ruin your outlook on humanity. When someone is kind or even just monotone instead of constant screaming it truly makes your day.
Some people do it for the chance to save 10 lives an hour from doctors who were trying their best but needed a little help writing prescriptions
All jobs are bs. Just put it this way , everyone gets sick of working at some point . No matter where you work, having to deal with people isn't easy. Moods swings are an example
As a careworker working in a nursing home full of dementia patients in Japan, i feel mentally exhausted too.

Everything MEDICAL does that.....only to it's WORKERS. So,let's be THANKFUL for people that KNOW what they're DOING.
As someone with MANY ER, ICU, and regular hospital stays; treat the staff like humans. They really want and love helping people. I have had a nurse on their last day, it was not “happy” in a traditional sense. I’ve had people on my care team who transferred from ER to something else. You have a right to be upset if you genuinely are not getting the care you require, but the team needs a little care too.
(And have other patients and can’t get to your room in 1 second)
SAY THIS AGAIN FOR THE MORONS IN THE BACK!
After 17 yrs I was finally done.. burnt out is real. Sadly I didn't realize I was burnt out until I left that toxic environment.
Being burnt out is dangerous too. Not just for the patient, u urself as well.
what made me burnt out in the medical field wasn't the patients, but rather the doctors 😅
Bruh, it’s the accuracy for me 😂.

Back in the day people respected nurses. And nurses had discipline, and wouldn’t take any BS. Now you can beat the 💩 out of a nurse and carry on with your day, all because you were “sick”. And it’s so mentally draining.
smh. No one protects nurses.
I don't understand why people are so awful to those that are literally helping save and extend their LIVES
Tell the average person they have a right to healthcare long enough, and they'll start to believe it.
While waiting on a room to open up I was septic and it was during covid. There was one old bat screaming at ER staff how she needed a cup of coffee and to 💩
I am sure they wouldn’t be happy if they had to clean up her 💩. Then they’d be mad at her for that. You can’t win.
You don't realize how burned out you are til you leave the hospital.
How many here see those "Become a Nurse. Be the one who dares to care." posters around their hospitals?
Are you serious? That's a real poster????

I had my daughter and the lady in the bed across from me at 6 am demanding to go for a smoke, she left her baby there crying…. No problem the cops arrested her and had the father come pick up the baby, she was charged w abandonment

In the hospitals around Atlanta they have a unit where moms can drop off their baby and get rest/sleep. I never wanted to use them though because it's hard trusting a stranger with your baby when that person has more than a dozen other babies to look after. The mom in your case sounds a little nutty to say the least!
This is why I went into private care, I have one patient that I have taken care of for 5 years now.
Lucky you! Smart you!🎉
How do you manage that? Do you market yourself or go through an agency? I thought about taking a simular road.

I’ll never forget how kind the nurses in the ICU were when my grandma was there. My whole family and I were having to make the decision of either letting her go (she was intubated and couldn’t breath on her own) OR to put in a trach which would necessitate around the clock care. I remember being so ANGRY at my grandpa because he firmly said “she told me she didn’t want to be intubated and she’s already been like this for almost a week….we can’t let her suffer like this.” I was selfish and wasn’t ready to live without her and it took me awhile to remember that it’s what’s best for HER that’s important. I basically had a mini mental breakdown in the hallway and one of the nurses caressed my shoulders and didn’t even say a word. She knew there was nothing she could say, but she brought me so much comfort in that moment just by showing concern and empathy. God bless all nurses. ❤

Sis is a PA in an ER in Washington DC. She's talked about quitting so many times, but the $ is WAY higher in the ER (for a reason). After she had a baby, she was going to decrease her hours, but she's the biggest breadwinner & husband (who likes to spend $) convinced her to keep her hours up. When I am in hospital, I don't use my call light unless I am not allowed to go to the toilet by myself. I wait for the nurses to come around and they always do. In addition, I am grateful for everything.
I'm not a medical worker, not really, but man, I feel my empathy slowly dying too. You can only have so many people bitch you out over problems they caused for themselves.
One thing i learned watching these videos... people are mean
COVID changed alot of careers - especially Healthcare & ER pros.
"How long does it take to get to the store?"
About the same amount of time it takes for you to figure out nobody went
So damn accurate…..sucks the life outta you if you truly care.
The mask 😂
Me every morning on the way to work
I was a vet tech for a couple of years at an ER. I got burnt out from that job, but i couldn't imagine dealing with human patients like this. The massive ignorance from the general population isnt exaggerated.
I swear if you hate your job please leave or stop talking about leaving. I need good energy at work
Haha that’s for real!
i was one of the patients that never used the call thing bcs i thought id bother them so i just waited on the schedule stuff lol
I've been a receptionist at my practice for about 2 months and the life has been fully drained from me
I love you videos bro keep on making more you make me laugh every time❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So if someone is there on oxygen, and someone lights a cigarette, wont those outlets explode on the wall?
Its very likely, hence why he hadnt received any cigarettes and im sure he was told that he wasnt getting any despite his demands lol
Bro was trying to light the whole place up 😭😭😭
And there's no point in mentioning they can't smoke as a patient because then they will try to fight you
I see so many things that were unacceptable years ago when I was being trained. Husband was in hospital and half full urinal sat on the bedside table, lunch tray placed beside it an hour later, until I complained.
Thats normal😂 your own urine isn’t your problem when you’re in the hospital. Now maybe if it was someone else’s 😂 they clean the rooms daily let’s worry about keeping patients alive. It’s not a hotel 💁🏽♀️✨
I remember when you could smoke cigarettes while in the hospital..(unless you were on oxygen)..the good old days..🚬
Back when they had cigarette vending machines in the waiting room.
@@sarahmozsi8159 and my doctor always had a pack of '0ld Gold' cigarettes in his smock pocket ...R.I.P. Dr. Forsythe 🕯️🚬
Bad for every person around choking on your smoking. 😮 BAD OLD DAYS.
@@patriciatinkey2677 ... That's back when we had freedom to conduct ourselves as we saw fit...Back when a little document called the Declaration of Independence was signed by Congress July 4th, 1776..."We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal by our Creator and have certain unalienable rights, among them are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" actually meant something..Still does to me and mine...how bout you ?!
@@debbiebasche5337 Freedom doesn't give you the right to make others sick...but i guess you think that's OK. Shows your lack of character!
co-work’s attitudes are what burned me out.
Bad attitudes in every work environment especially warehousing . But I would say females make it harder for other females with all the gossiping a ish talking
I remember my friend said she went to the ER but left because she waited 30 minutes and no one came for her yet
So she's a part of the 98.5% who came to the ER for bullshit to begin with.
That's not even a wait ...unless your actively having a cardiac event.
