Footloose the movie isn’t a musical though, it’s a movie with music in it. None of the characters sing. Therefore it broke your rules.

If they couldn’t have included Hairspray, they could have put in Cry-Baby on there. It’s also a John Waters movie but actually had characters singing. Although that musical didn’t last long on Broadway.

Unpopular opinion: I think the Newsie's movie is better than the musical. I mean, the musical puts a lot more emphasis on the love story between Jack Kelly and Katherine, who wasn't even in the movie. The movie looks more at the bond of friendship and brotherhood among the news boys, and for that, I like it sooooo much more!

Perhaps, but Newsies failure at the box office (and the way it didn't seem to tap into the public zeitgeist was also largely what stopped the resurgence of the live-action film musical in its tracks. It was a real lost opportunity. Frankly the musical was lucky to have had a chance at a second life on stage.

The movie actually had kids, which correctly displays the newsies because the Newyork newsies were all innocent children of ages like 6 to 15. In the Broadway version they had 20 yearold men to display newsies. Also, the movie had Denton. A very important character who was very real and helped the newsies win the strike. KATHERINE?!?!?!?! First of all, 367 performances was a successful run for a show in the 30s. But by the 80s and Singing In The Rain, it was a flop. Second, Leslie Caron's last name isn't pronounced Karen, it's pronounced with the accent on the 2nd syllable ca-Rone. Third, the most successful American musical in Broadway history, Chicago, is baed on a 1942 movie called Roxie Hart, starring Ginger Rogers, Adolph Menjou, Sara Allgood (Mama Morton), and Spring Byington (Mary Sunshine). It includes 4 songs, two of which are sung by George Montgomery, one of which has Ginger Rogers dancing, which makes it far more of a musical than Footloose.

All three movie versions of Annie came AFTER the musical; the musical itself is based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strips.

Okay but Footloose the movie was never a musical, so it shouldn’t be qualified to be on this list based on your rules, and if that’s the case, The Producers is more qualified because the original movie has the song Springtime for Hitler which was still used for the broadway musical version.
