The Dharma of The Buddha has been around over 2,500 years. When we consider the slaughter of man by man during all of this time and the dog eat dog of modern societies, the Dharma obviously hasn't hit home of planet earth. Most people cannot afford to be a Buddhist and perhaps it will always be the preserve of the privileged intellectual elite, who will always live comfortable lives.

    • @davidjohnson8218
      @davidjohnson8218 Před 3 lety +2

I think anyone could be a Buddhist - certainly not a matter of affording it. You are a Buddhist if you just follow and accept the 5 precepts to live your life by. And have as your refuge the Buddha. Its not hard. He taught the poorest of farmers. You don't have to read all of the Suttas and become a scholar -only just do what he advised.

    • @petercurry6222
      @petercurry6222 Před 3 lety +1

@@davidjohnson8218 I would say that to truly live a Spiritual/Buddhist is very hard indeed. Perhaps even more so in the fanatic consumerism of modern materialism. My point about 'not affording it' being, that the vast majority of people must give so much of their time to working and maintaining the basics of life for living as best they can. Of course this doesn't prevent anybody from living a good and ethical life at a very basic level. We could argue that people generally, Buddhist or otherwise live such a basic moral life. But a moral foundation even at such a preliminary level, is a far cry from the life of meditation and effort needed 'to see' the 'Wisdom of Enlightenment,' if indeed such a thing exists. If Buddhism or any other religion, helps people to get through the pain and misery of life, then no one can be against that. But to believe that there is something in us that needs to be saved, is a nonsense. The Buddha/Dharna as refuge is just as absurd as Jesus as saviour. We live and we die and if we want to know why is to pile even more agony and suffering - psychologically speaking - on the human condition. The Buddha may well have come to know and see 'Something' and there are always exceptions in life, but to pretend that such a possible 'Awakening' is there for everybody, is simply not true. Regards.

***** I think he was NOT commenting about the representation of the USA - rather just the flags representing the countries. The Buddhist sangha itself is ideally just one and not separated by borders. But this is the japanese - they have tried to get as many countries to send Buddhist to each conference. The first was only about 12 and now its up to 40 now and they are proud of this. To them they want all countries to come so they post the flags showing how well they are doing - and also the flags are put over the chair that the monk is supposed to sit in. They are just also for the monks to know where to sit.

-----PART IV :- BUDDHA OR KARL MARX-----
CHAPTER 18:- BUDDHA OR KARL MARX
    VI. EVALUATION OF MEANS
We must now turn to the evaluation of means. We must ask whose means are superior and lasting in the long run. There are, however, some misunderstandings on both sides. It is necessary to clear them up.
Take violence. As to violence there are many people who seem to shiver at the very thought of it. But this is only a sentiment. Violence cannot be altogether dispensed with. Even in non-communist countries a murderer is hanged. Does not hanging amount to violence?
Non-Communist countries go to war with non-Communist countries. Millions of people are killed. Is this no violence ? If a murderer can be killed, because he has killed a citizen, if a soldier can be killed in war because he belongs to a hostile nation why cannot a property owner be killed if his ownership leads to misery for the rest of humanity ? There is no reason to make an exception in favour of the property owner, why one should regard private property as sacrosanct.
The Buddha was against violence. But he was also in favour of justice and where justice required he permitted the use of force. This is well illustrated in his dialogue with Sinha Senapati the Commander-in-Chief of Vaishali. Sinha having come to know that the Buddha I preached Ahimsa went to him and asked:
“The Bhagvan preaches Ahimsa. Does the Bhagvan preach an offender to be given freedom from punishment ? Does the Bhagvan preach that we should not go to war to save our wives, our children and our wealth ?
Should we suffer at the hands of criminals in the name of Ahimsa.?”
“Does the Tathagata prohibit all war even when it is in the interest of Truth and Justice?”
Buddha replied, You have wrongly understood what I have been preaching. An offender must be punished and an innocent man must be freed. It is not a fault of the Magistrate if he punishes an offender.
The cause of punishment is the fault of the offender. The Magistrate who inflicts the punishment is only carrying out the law. He does not become stained with Ahimsa. A man who fights for justice and safety cannot be accused of Ahimsa. If all the means of maintaining peace have failed then the responsibility for Himsa falls on him who starts war. One must never surrender to evil powers. War there may be. But it must not be for selfish ends….”
There are of course other grounds against violence such as those urged by Prof. John Dewey. In dealing with those who contend that the end justifies the means is morally perverted doctrine, Dewey has rightly asked what can justify the means if not the end ? It is only the end that can justify the means.
Buddha would have probably admitted that it is only the end which would justify the means. What else could ? And he would have said that if the end justified violence, violence was a legitimate means for the end in view. He certainly would not have exempted property owners from force if force was the only means for that end. As we shall see his means for the end were different. As prof. Dewey has pointed out that violence is only another name for the use of force and although force must be used for creative purposes a distinction between use of force as energy and use of force as violence needs to be made. The achievement of an end involves the destruction of many other ends which are integral with the one that is sought to be, destroyed. Use of force must be so regulated that it should save as many ends as possible in destroying the evil one. Buddha’s Ahimsa was not as absolute as the Ahimsa preached by Mahavira the founder of Jainism. He would have allowed force only as energy. The Communists preach Ahimsa as an absolute principle. To this the Buddha was deadly opposed.
As to Dictatorship the Buddha would have none of it. He was born a democrat and he died a Democrat. At the time he lived there were 14 monarchical states and 4 republics. He belonged to the Sakyas and the Sakya’s kingdom was a republic. He was extremely in love with Vaishali which was his second home because it was a republic. Before his Mahaparinibanna he spent his Varshavasa in Vaishali. After the completion of his Varshavasa he decided to leave Vaishali and go elsewhere as was his wont. After going some distance he looked back on Vaishali and said to Ananda. “This is the last look of Vaishali which the Tathagata is having”. So fond was he of this republic.
He was a thorough equalitarian. Originally the Bhikkus, including the Buddha himself, wore robes made of rags. This rule was enunciated to prevent the aristocratic classes from joining the Sangh. Later Jeevaka the great physician prevailed upon the Buddha to accept a robe which was made of a whole cloth. The Buddha at once altered the rule and extended it to all the monks.
Once the Buddha’s mother Mahaprajapati Gotami who had joined the Bhikkuni Sangh heard that the Buddha had got a chill. She at once started preparing a scarf for him. After having completed it she took to the Buddha and asked him to wear it. But he refused to accept it saying that if it is a gift it must be a gift to the whole Sangh and not to an individual member of the Sangh. She pleaded and pleaded but he
    refused to yield.
The Bhikshu Sangh had the most democratic constitution. He was only one of the Bhikkus. At the most he was like a Prime Minister among members of the Cabinet. He was never a dictator. Twice before his death he was asked to appoint some one as the head of the Sangh to control it. But each time he refused saying that the Dhamma is the Supreme Commander of the Sangh. He refused to be a dictator and refused to appoint a dictator.
What about the value of the means? Whose means are superior and lasting in the long run?
Can the Communists say that in achieving their valuable end they have not destroyed other valuable ends? They have destroyed private property. Assuming that this is a valuable end can the Communists say that they have not destroyed other valuable end in the process of achieving it? How many people have they killed for achieving their end.
Has human life no value ? Could they not have taken property without taking the life of the owner?
Take dictatorship. The end of Dictatorship is to make the Revolution a permanent revolution. This is a valuable end. But can the Communists say that in achieving this end they have not destroyed other valuable ends ? Dictatorship is often defined as absence of liberty or absence of Parliamentary Government. Both interpretations are not quite clear.
There is no liberty even when there is Parliamentary Government.
For law means want of liberty. The difference between Dictatorship and Parliamentary Govt. lies in this. In Parliamentary Government every citizen has a right to criticise the restraint on liberty imposed by the Government. In Parliamentary Government you have a duty and a right; the duty to obey the law and right to criticise it.
In Dictatorship you have only duty to obey but no right to criticise it.

Sin - consists evil, crime - is universal problem, is ubiquitous. Humanity contaminated by sin. Sin in us by default, not learnt, not taught. Sin manifests in many forms. Sin is the opium. The origin of sin is unanswered.
    My journey.
Sin is pre-existing in all. Nobody taught us to sin. Sin pre-dates The Bible. The Bible explains origins of sin. The Bible provides remedy for pre-existing sin, through Jesus Christ death and resurrection. The Bible is best selling book in the world for this reason. Sin is real, The Bible is relevant. Sin is born at every child birth. Sin is disease of heart, and Jesus Christ is the cure.
Satan is the enemy, came to steal, kill and destroy. Misleads us to blame good loving God. God is not the author of evil.
Media, Police, Defense, Judiciary, Penitentiary, Security, Contracts confirm sin exists.
The origins of life, natural laws, sin, morals, purpose, meaning, conscience, music, creativity, intelligence, beauty, color, nature, water, air, light and amalgamation, remain unevidenced - elsewhere.
We love truth when it enlightens us, but hate when it convicts us.
Instructing to "Heart wash" from sin is not "Brainwash".
God created universe, placed natural laws, made humans in His image, gave talents, instructed to multiply and explore - The Initiation of Science. Science is the legitimate child of natural laws. Without natural laws science has no foundation.
We are created with good purpose and meaning. We are good. Then sin entered through satan and we all fallen. Disease, despair, deformities, deficiencies, depression, stress, guilt, greed, hate, anger, rebellious spirit, spiritual death entered. Sin plays spoilsport.
Unloose the Soul from the tight knot of sin. Soul outlasts death.
Sinners cannot save themselves from sin. Jesus Christ, the Holy God, intervened, willingly died on The Cross and resurrected, for remmissions of our sins, to save us from sin and hell.
We are weak at the core, however we try to portray otherwise. We need Holy God's help, who is willing to help with open arms.
Unable to find any motive any reason for Jesus Christ to die willingly on Cross and resurrect - except His love to save us from pre-existing sin and hell.
Nobody died for our sins and resurrected - except Jesus Christ. Exclusivity.
    Jesus Christ claimed:
"I am The Way, The Truth and The Life". "I am The Resurrection and The Life".
    "I am The Good Shepherd".
Jesus Christ has the authority to forgive sins.
Religion says "Do". Jesus Christ says "Done".
Religion is man attempts to 'search gods'. Jesus Christ came from heaven in 'search of man'.
Salvation from sin and hell is not earned through works or deeds or pilgrimages or rituals or ceremonies or traditions or cultures or meditations or public displays or hypocrisy or making personal sacrifices or making animal sacrifices.
Salvation from sin and hell is free, but not cheap. Because Jesus Christ laid His life on The Cross, and resurrected.
God loves the sinner, but hates the sin. Just like a mother loves child, but hates disease in child.
We are saved by God's grace, not by our works.
Karma is getting what we deserve. Grace is getting what we don't deserve. Only Grace can be pre-fixed with word Amazing. Amazing Grace. Karma is not Amazing, it is depressing.
GRACE: Getting what we don't deserve - i.e. forgiveness of sin, eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ.
MERCY: Not getting what we deserve - i.e. punishment of sin, separation from God, eternity in hell.
God offers grace and mercy for free through Jesus Christ death and resurrection.
Jesus Christ suffered, ridiculed, spat-on, humiliated, crucified on The Cross, and therefore He understands our pain. He raised victorious, we will too. Those who endure till end are victorious.
Jesus Christ coming again to judge all. The doors will be closed. Jesus Christ reveals every mystery, answers every question. He is The Alpha and The Omega. He judges everyone.
One day every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The First Christmas - Jesus Christ came to earth from heaven to save us from pre-existing sin.
The First Good Friday - Jesus Christ crucified to The Cross, died willingly for remission of our sins.
The First Resurrection Day, also linked to Easter - Jesus Christ resurrected from death.
Jesus Christ made entry to Holy Heaven free through Him. Repent of sin and be saved. Easy.
The First Coming of Jesus Christ - He is Lamb, slaughtered for remission of sins to save us from sin and hell. And resurrected.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ - He will be Lion, The Judge. The Lion and The Lamb.
Jesus Christ forgave all who crucified Him, and now forgives all, even who reject, ridicule and mock Him. He loves all unconditionally.
Believe, trust, repent of pre-existing sin in Jesus Christ that He died for remission of our sins and resurrected, and coming back to judge, accept Him as Lord and Saviour, and be saved from sin and hell. Any time, any where. Even now. Simple.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
I found God loved me regardless of sins, weaknesses and rejections by others. As sinner I cannot save myself through deeds. He believed me and has faith in me. I am not in competition with others. God loves you all, individually.
(My journal. Journey to life - after testing all 'isms' and religions, after failing to find origins, purpose and meaning of life, after swallowing pride, egos, anger, hate.)

God is a spirit & Love. How can u define God if God is Love?
The dhamma/the way things are/the way the universe operates is that loving kindness is the law of things. Buddhas teaching are not in conflict with other spiritual paths. Christian’s often create all sorts of human views that make them against other very good & compatible views. It’s very sad they don’t seem to follow the Bible. If u don’t love others u can’t say u love God.

@@SA-ww1ge Sin/evil is not compatible to Holy God of Bible and holy heaven. This remains the same.
Sin/evil pre-existing in every single person and not eligible to enter holy heaven.
Jesus Christ God came from heaven to earth, paid the penalty for sins of every single person by dying on Cross and resurrecting.
That is how much Jesus Christ loves us humans sinners by giving His life, forgiving the sins, providing eternity in heaven which we don't deserve. Jesus Christ loves every human unconditionally, even His enemies.
Jesus Christ loves the sinners, but not the sin/evil. Just like a parent loves the child but not the disease of child.
