- I've travelled to Milan numerous times and I've decided to compile a list of 10 things you should know before planning your trip to this wonderful city. In this video we are going to check out the “national” drink that is older than Italy itself, explore how the future sustainable living in Europe might look and more importantly answer the question “How did Milan become the birthplace of the iconic Italian fashion names and why was it not Rome, Florence or Venice?"
I'm hoping that these tips will help you to plan your trip to Milan! Also, if you have any tips about Milan, please share them in the comments below.

It ia APERITIVO ,NOT apiritivo....
I'm from Milan: trust me, stay well away from Vittorio Emanuele Gallery for eating. They are EXTREMELY expensive places and basically tourist places only. Find a spot on the Navigli, like "posto di conversazione" restaurant, to have a decent cost/food situation.
Also, while it's true that tap water in Milan is absolutely safe, the bottled water does NOT come, AT ALL from the same place of tap water. Each brand of bottled water comes from a specific source, sometimes even 1000km far from Milan and, 90% of the time from a mountain source.
Finally: Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, is not a "shopping center". Yes it has shops in it (and super expensive ones), but that's a monument! Built in honour of the then King Vittorio Emanuele
Tons of great info here, thanks Alex’s for sharing this info- I really do appreciate your local input 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I was about to remark the same. Actually be wary of most restaurants within the inner city centre.
@@allenmontrasio8962 why? 🙂 Is it more expensive?
@@theempire00 both more expensive and lower quality.
@@allenmontrasio8962 thanks 😊
This quite accurate. As a Milanese I would add that if you're staying more than 2-3 days, there are plenty of offbeat places you can visit in the reclaimed industrial parts of the city, like Mudec in the Via Savona district or Hangar Bicocca in the - you've guessed - Bicocca district or even the Monumental cemetery and nearby Chinatown (via Paolo Sarpi), with the new ADI design museum. Another *very* Milanese district is the elegant corso Vercelli and nearby piazza Wagner, which is not a tourist attraction and therefore truly authentic.
Just one thing, don't have a meal in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, it's inordinately expensive and, frankly, a tourist trap. As a rule of thumb, if most of the patrons are not Italian, stay away.
Finally,Milan is a big city, but it's not very large, so it's relatively easy to move around. Just beware that public transport is OK in the centre, but not so great as you move outwards.
Oh how wonderful, thank you Allen for sharing all this local knowledge. Love your input, I’ve added these tips for the future!
Chinatown is a beautiful street, often overlooked
I'm reading your comment with great interest. I plan on visiting Italy for the first time next year and would love to see the main attractions in Milan but also something more local and indicative of the city.
top tips!
Hello, I will visit Milan next week, could you suggest me some not very expensive places where I can taste pizza? Thank you so much!!
I am a "Milanese" O.G. (a person born in Milan), you got your facts right. Please keep it up by spreading real news/history about Italy. there is too much misinformation among non-italian speaking countries.
Ayeeeee Rick, lovely to meet an OG Milanese and can’t thank you enough for your kinda words! I try to be thorough in my research and being a non Italian I made sure to ask my Italian friends a million questions before I recorded the video😅 Milan is beautiful and defiantly deserves to be seen!
@@ClassicPolly you're welcome girl! I've been showing vids of Milan to my partner for a week now cause we'll be visiting soon from upside down and this was definetly the best video so far, without common misconceptions, silly mistakes and hearsays! Keep up the good work, I'm def following ur adventures from now on! :)
hi, im traveling to milan in a few days with friends who are 18 but i am 17, will i be able to buy beer at pubs with them and have wine with my meal at a restaurant?
@@liz-pf3iv short andwer yes, you can drink. Long answer to come.
@@liz-pf3iv unless things changed in the last decade since I left Italy, BUSINESS owners and bouncers CANNOT ask for ID legally (and dont care about it). But they can refuse entry or to serve you if you look far too young. It never happened to anybody I know tho and I was a bouncer for many years. FYI only Polizia and Carabinieri are entitled to ask you for ID legally and hotel receptionist can ask to withhold your passport or other forms of ID overnight to fill up documents that get forwarded to Police periodically. If anybody else asks you to show your ID outside a legit business like car rentals etc be suspicious.
I love this! Congratulations, someone who isn't afraid to venture off the beaten path.
Also, I appreciate all of your tips. You make the location the highlight, rather than centering it all around yourself.
Thank you.
Cheers Rosanna!

Just what I need. We'll be in Milan in July - wearing our hats!
Amazing! I’m so excited for your trip and 👒 all the way!
Loved this video, really helped me get more excited for my trip! Regarding the covid restrictions and rules - do you have to wear a mask at all times or is it for enclosed spaces only? Thank you for your effort into this video! 💕💕
You are gonna have so much fun! Last time I’ve checked you need to wear a mask inside and in the transport but please re-check the rules closer to your trip again just to be on the safe side.
LOVE THIS VID
This was so interesting and helpful to watch, currently planning my trip to Milan and I had absolutely no idea what to do (going for a friend's wedding). However, after your video I am so excited and can't wait to explore and eat ice cream 🍦☀️

Wow ! So informative travel docu vid, I've been in Milan for about 23 years but yet still love discovering new things to enjoy my dolce vita lifestyle here, your vid gave me new places to visit. Thank you for your classy docu-style video, and please keep posting. Arriverderci
Cheers Joi, really means a lot to me to read your lovely comment! Haha, the la dolce vita lifestyle is why I keep returning to this gorgeous country every year. Is there anything you would like to add to the local mix?
@@ClassicPolly Yes, how about a lovely summer short trip to Lake Como and its surrounding villages? 💖🍹🏖
I visited Milan last year and agree with you that it is amazing. Here is what I would add to your fine video. You mentioned the cemetery, but you didn't show any of it. It is so insane as to be indescribable. You did not mention Leonardo's Iron Horse replica. It isn't too far out and is worth a look. You also didn't mention La Scala Opera House. It's the most famous opera house in the world and a bucket list item for anyone who even likes opera a little bit. Keep up the good work. You have a great personality for this type of travel video.
Milan is One of city that i want go to get travel someday. Grazie!
I love this!!!! Polly more videos of italy, Lake Cuomo and Amalfi Coast please and thank you!!! Greetings from Arizona 💖
Thanks so much Monica. Haha We might need to book tickets to lake Como and Amalfi coast then! Appreciate the support!
Good video; has a good vibe to it.
BTW, it's "apEritivo"
and I'd like to suggest Milan's Chinatown; especially, if you want to eat something tasty outside of the regular lunch/dinner hours. It has a great vibe, and Italian locals love it there. There are also a couple of great wine bars/enoteca.
Thanks for the tip Carol, Chinatown was highly recommended by my local friends, sadly we just didn’t have the time to go there.
Oh this is amazing … thank you for all the fabulous facts and tips … heading to Milan in a few weeks ❤
OH, that's lovely! Have fun in Milan!
Your video was very helpful, thank you 🎉
Cheers Daniel!
Your editing and the way you explain things is AMAZING!! Bravo, I felt like I was watching a show, was entertained the whole time and was engaged in learning more about the city 😍
Oh this is a wonderful compliment, thank you so much for your warm words Isabelle, really means a lot to me 🧡

Cheers Wayne, you gonna have a fantastic time in Milan and omg please say hi to Cape Town from me!
I'm from Ireland and have always wanted to visit Italy. Here's hoping I can finally make that happen soon.
@Mark Nelson I actually did have plans to go to Milan, I've pictures and it certainly doesn't look like a dump. So could you reiterate how it is the dump you claim it to be?.
Excellent presentation!!!!
Cheers Nek!
Wow... My best friend, Nice video... Beautiful place Enjoy watching this video... Have a nice day.
Visiting Italy for the first time in June! Milan is one of the cities we are visiting. Do you have a link to your travel guide? I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. It is fantastic. Instantly subscribed!
Just search for "do" and "don't". Milan has basically everything, from thermal pools to a big amazing tech museum, art, fashion, castles, churches, canals and so on... So search based on your personal interests

Hi!
Great vlog!
What desktop case you have, what model? It’s gorgeous!
Thanks!
Cheers Alex, it's by be quiet pure base 500dx in white :)
The gorgeous Bagatti Valsecchi mansion on via Gesù / via Santo Spirito - where the restaurant rents those beautiful spaces on the ground floor from the Region of Lombardy - also houses a fascinating and gorgeous private museum preserving the original late 19th century Bagatti Valsecchi interiors with Italian Renaissance art and furnishings. Be sure to visit it!
Just checked the images of this mansion- OMG how gorgeous is this place. Thank you so much for this recommendation, already added it to my list.
Love this video, new subbie here😊
Thank you so much for watching and your support! It really means a lot to me!
basil ice cream from the place called frozen? if so, i 100% agree, i reminisce. i'll go again this weekend, lol.
I might be a tad jealous of you right now! Please eat an extra helping for me 🙏
thanks for this video, I;m planning to visit Milan in a week for 3-4 days ) I hope I'll try to checkout your advices there, and there wont'be a million people in a centre ))
Let’s keep fingers crossed it won’t be too crowded!
@09:52
Where is the Gilato that you dreamed of? which shop?
The bike lanes. I want to know more about the bike lanes. They say Milan is going green and the world is going green with envy.
Great video Polly. Just one little thing: we don’t refer to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele as Emanuele shopping center. We just say La Galleria
Oh I Love it, La Galleria. Good to know, thanks for sharing this local nugget Fabio!
As an Italian resident, we DO NOT classify Starbuck's as coffee. Ludicrous drinks for tourists. Another handy tip - don't go to Milano in late July until around 20th. August. Nearly everyone is on holiday and you'll only find stifling heat and several million mosquitoes.
Cheers Stephen! I agree Starbucks is no bueno especially in Italy but you have to give them credit for the inside interior work they have done. It looks like a palace inside. Great tip about July-August conditions, thank you!
@@ClassicPolly tbh, it does look amazing & coffee is good. It is different from what we are used to
Thank you i was paning to come ib mid August
Come italiano, invece, io (I DO) reputo il caffè di Starbuck di qualità assolutamente eccellente ( e ti sarei grato di spiegarmi quali sarebbero gli immaginifici "ludicrous drinks for tourists" di cui parli).
Hi Polly! Thanks for your great video! I go to Milan on the 4th of August. Do you know if this kind of ceremony at 0:48 is common? (what day, hour etc). Thanks for your answer
Morgane
Great question, I think it was some sort of graduation that we got lucky to witness. This was shot on our trip in the middle of September 2020 so I'm not quite sure it's common, sorry!
@@ClassicPolly thanks for your answer !
What is the name of the coffee shop you are talking about 😊
Where is the basil ice cream location? I love ice cream and would love to try it!
That's the name of the gelateria -LE COLONNE GELATI & CREPES FAMOSE, it's close to the Columns of San Lorenzo, so it's a nice area to walk around with your ice cream :)
Good Video greetings from India
Great video and tips. I'm doing about 15 day Euro Trip next year in late February. Yes it's winter, but going from winter in Toronto to there will feel great lol. I fly through Lisbon (I see your Sintra guide!), likely will do Barcelona and Madrid as well. If I do end up doing Milan, how many days would you recommend staying there? Your guide is a 48 hour one, but would 3 or 4 days be good? Originally I was planning to do 5 days in 3 different cities, but now it seems 5 days isn't fully taking advantage of my time in Europe. Instead I could do 4 days and see 4, or even possibly 3 days and see 5 cities. What Given the cities I listed, what would you recommend?
Yeah I feel you, winter in Southern Europe is a little milder than in Toronto. I'm based in Tallinn so our winters are very similar to yours.
Re Milan,I would say 3-4 days is more than enough if you want to explore the city at a more relaxed pace. If you are happy to jam-pack your days then in 48hr you will be able to see pretty much all major attractions in Milan.
In general, I would recommend at least 4 days in each city, it will be less stressful that way. Lisbon-Madrid-Barcelona-Milan sounds like a great Eurotrip to me :)
@@ClassicPolly Now I'm thinking of adding Porto and doing 3 days in each city. That gives 2 days to explore and 1 day for any day trips which hopefully should be enough. Thanks for your answer and the great video, you were really helpful!
Very informative video, Im there next to create content
Very high-quality video. Thank U. 🎬 If you could remove the indoor footage, that would be perfect. It's because audiences want to focus on the sight of Milan.
😉 Looking forward to your new content.
Hehe, thanks guys for your kind comment :)
I disagree, i loved seeing the face behind the enthusiastic narrative and the smile really made the whole video more exciting! Beaming with positivity.
9:50 I will add a curiosity to your already very detailed and professional video. At the Columns of San Lorenzo the Edict of Milan was proclaimed in 313 after Christ, decided by the Emperor Constantine (that's why there is a statue of him). At that time Milan was the capital of the Roman Empire, from that square the Christian religion was proclaimed Religion of the Empire, and therefore the Christians stopped being persecuted.
[citation needed]
The church of San Lorenzo was only built later in the fourth century, the columns are older but were likely moved from elsewhere, the statue of Constantine is a 19th century copy of a statue in Rome, and the Edict of Milan, were it to have been dictated, would have been far more likely to have been proclaimed either in a state basilica, the imperial palace (as it was decreed by the western caesar and augustus) or in the forum as would have been customary for an Edict. The Edict of Milan, whose existence is debated, did not make Christianity the religion of the empire, as this didn't happen until Theodosius' Edict of Thessalonica in 380. Milan, as one of the western capitals of the Roman empire, was particularly important in early Christianity because of the relationship between Theodosius and Ambrose in the later 4th century, which can be seen in the architecture of the city, and the perculiarity of the persisting Ambrosian rite in the Diocese of Milan. Unfortunately though, while there is a long, fascinating history to the church and the columns, they and the statue of Constantine are more of a nice homage to the importance the city had in the Christian tradition than they are themselves in that way important.
1) Dal punto di vista del Cattolicesimo , l'arcidiocesi di Milano anziché seguire il rito liturgico romano , segue quello ambrosiano . 2) In Lombardia alcune parrocchie seguono il rito romano e altre il rito ambrosiano .
Are you really walking around in a t-shirt? .. unbelievable, lol .. coz we have still ice on the water and snowfalls here on Saaremaa .. thanks for sharing a bit of Italy's sunshine and warmth and wonderful sightseeings 😆
Yeah I totally feel you, winter in Tallinn doesn't want to let go. This girl needs more sunshine and warmth in her life so I really loved editing this footage!
I'm so glad you have enjoyed the video and yes, ive visited Castello Sfrorzesco on my preivous visits and absolutely enjoyed it. Milan is full of churches that are gorgeous inside...I only wish I had more time to see them all!
@@ClassicPolly vero! un abbraccio cara
While i live in brescia (100km from milan more or less) i went daily to milan for uni pre covid. We went somewhat often to starbuck because they had a location near the uni (already closed). I don't really liked the shop but i'm a sucker for caramel so frappuccino was kinda obligatory. Everything else was kinda meh.
Also the idea of living in milan was so depressing i preferred to move daily with trains.
hi, thanks for the video, was wondering how the public transport works as it is still confusing to me. how do you validate it and if within the 90 minutes you are changing from bus to train do you validate it again?
Thanks Mia. On teams you validate your ticket once you are in the team (there is a calculator and it stamps your ticket) and it’s active for 90 min, meaning you can get off this tram and use another means of public transport for the duration of your ticket. In metro you will punch in your ticket to open the metro gates and same when you get out. As far as I know in metro you can use your ticket for 90min but as soon as you leave the gates of the metro you can get in with the same ticket.
@@ClassicPolly thank you !
@@ClassicPolly on trams & buses you can hop on and off within the 90 min deadline. On metro (subway) you can access it only once.if you get out you cannot get back in. Example: you can do bus metro bus, but you cannot metro bus metro.
Thanks for this informative video. Is wearing FFP2 mask still mandatory in the trains?
Cheers, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Masks where mandatory in the transport when we were there but please check the regulations before you travel there.
Not anymore
@@Chris-kz7us Thanks
I think they stopped being mandatory really recently, but with cases on the rise we might see some minor restrictions come up again this winter
In the streets: no hat.
In the studio: hat.
La Milano da bere è ancora qui!
Is your guide available? Travelling to Milan tomorrow!
Hi Sandra, I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. No, not yet as I am still putting it all together in one document. Hope your Milan trip will be amazing :)
Working on it! Have a fab trip to Milan and eat loads of gelato!
What’s the coffee shop again? I want to try.
Which one you want to visit?
So excited! Just booked my tickets for my family & I to Milan! Quick question here. Are they racist towards Mexicans? We are white passing but i just want to know lol. Also will they understand us if we speak spanish? Thank you! I loved this video❤️
Thank you so very much. I am not sure how well people speak Spanish in Milan as I mainly got by with English and some very basic Italian. It is a very international city so you can never know for sure ^^
As a Milanese, I can reassure you that speaking Spanish or being mexican/Latin American will cause you no issue, dw. There's a very big latin community and Spanish is very well spoken amongst Italians. Maybe even better than English?
Hearing you call the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II "Mnuela shopping center" made my day. You don't know much about Milan but you're very funny.
I live in Lecco, a town very cose to Milan and I go there time by time for work meetings. Milan is crazy expensive, it's a great city if you want to have a few days of a mix of everything related to Italy...but I would never live there.
I just checked Lecco and OMG how beautiful is this town?! The lake, the mountains, the gorgeous houses - I'm so surprised I never heard of it before!
What is the name of the place that sells Basil gelato?
Hey, If I remember correctly the place is called Gelateria La Romana:)
👍
In which month was it filmed?
It was shot in September.
