This was so fun! I was in York when I studied abroad in England when I was 19. I wish I had known more about English books at the time. I would have gone crazy in the bookstores too! I'd love to visit again. I remember seeing huge pink hydrangeas in York (in August). That was the first time I realized they didn't have to be blue. Funny the revelations of adulthood.
I'll have to look our for those hydrangeas in the summer! Hope you're able to visit York again sometime, Elizabeth - it's such a special city! xxx

Thank you for taking us on location with you. So much charm! Last night brought over 8 inches of gusting snow to my part of Connecticut. And it's still falling! I feel as if I've been transported to the North Pole. I'd much prefer York. I especially appreciate your voice-overs sharing tidbits of local history. You have a flair for capturing the soul of town and country. My wanderlust yearns all the more to hop across the Atlantic for an indefinite visit.
I knew I wanted to visit York but now I can’t wait! It’s so beautiful and picturesque, everything I love really! All those gorgeous bookshops are the cherry on the cake!

Miranda, thank you for this - what a lovely and transporting bit of armchair traveling you have provided! We did not make it to York when we lived in London although it was on our travel list. We will definitely visit it one day. Just the variety of bookshops is amazing, not to mention the gorgeous architecture of Yorkminster and the town, the ancient walls, the Tudor-style buildings, and and the centuries of history and drama. So lovely that you and Donna had the occasion to visit and do some book shopping too. If you ever decide to lead tours, Miranda, I will sign up as a customer! xx

I so wish there were still book shops like this here in my neck of the woods... a suburban cultural wasteland in western Canada. All we have here now is big chain stores which carry the latest bestsellers and not much else of real interest to me. You are so lucky, Miranda, to live in such a bounteous book heaven!
PS: I've just come across your CZcams, enjoying your cozy home and all the books and baking, but especially that stunning wallpaper in your bedroom!

Thank you for this beautiful vlog. I always wanted to visit York. We are now in lock-down and everything is closed, but your vlog made me happy and made it possible for me to travel and walk in these historical streets and enter the beautiful book shops.

Your red hat is beautiful Miranda. What a lovely tour of bookshops (my favorite was The Blue House Bookshop). The purchase of yours that I most envy is The Far Distant Oxus! I read about the story behind the book in How the Heather Looks: A Joyous Journey to the British Sources of Children's Books by Joan Bodger. I have wanted to read it since then, but the copies are so expensive. You got a real deal!

Love your excursions and video productions. I feel like you swept me away. I visited York with a group of 28 Americans on a Globus tour in 2016. We visited five countries in two weeks. We visited the Shambles in York. My favorite store was the Beatrix Potter shop. I’d love to go back someday. I look forward to more book shop excursions with you and your mom. I also look forward to your Winter Solstice book discussion in a few days. Great book. Loved it.

York is a pretty special city, it was strange to see it so quiet. Love the story about The Far Distant Oxus, we’ve got all of Arthur Ransome’s books which I will look a bit differently after hearing such a fabulous back story, what a humble and generous man, it was probably worth your trip out for that book alone!

Great video Miranda, you captured York beautifully. Next time you come to visit us you need to stop by Ken Spelman's books (and gallery) and of course Lucius, the rare book specialist, which carries a great selection of vintage kids' books - both on Micklegate. I only visited Fossgate books last week and left with a beautiful edition of Barbara Pym's autobiography A very private eye, which I intend to hunker down with over the holidays.

I'm from a town near york but now I live in scotland, i haven't been there in so long and this video made me so homesick :( I love the hairy fig and bluebird cafe! The amnesty and oxfam bookshops are my favourite as well 🥰

Lovely video. I’m such a big fan of you and your mom. I love York, and incidentally I was just reading about the 4 metre wide wreath in the Minster. Your video took me back to my last trip a few years ago on my way to Robin Hood bay. Made me feel like planning a new trip, and including visits to the lovely bookshops you showed.

I've never been to York but a friend of mine has bought a house there for her retirement. She says we're welcome to come visit any time. I'm looking forward to going there one day and love getting a glimpse of it through your video. Armchair travel is the next best thing for now.

Hi Miranda, thank you so much for this video. It was lovely. I immediately looked for Andrew Gant's Christmas Carol as I love Christmas Carols too, and I found one on EBay, which is soon to be on its way to me! They released a CD too, and I also found one of those! I don't know if you would be interested, but BBC4 aired a Lucy Worsley programme last night where she explores the origins of some favourite Christmas Carols! I haven't watched it yet, but its on my list, and I thought it was rather apt considering your purchase of Andrew Gant's book.

Hi Miranda, as you know I am new to your Channel and am loving every segment thus far. I want to adopt Donna as my mum she is absolutely a lovely lady and your are so lucky to have her as your mum.
Wonderful: great voiceover and music choices. I like all the bookshops you visited. I also like the The Little Apple Bookshop on High Petergate-just adjacent to the Minster. It's independent, has a good selection and lots of signed copies. If you like carols and have a spare hour, I can highly recommend the great Howard Goodall on BBC iplayer where he presents the history of carols.

York is my go-to place since it's my nearest city. I love looking around Waterstones the best, but on High Petergate there is Oxfam where they have a HUGE selection, also check out the Heart Foundation charity shop near Bootham Bar which stocks lots of great second-hand books at the back of the shop.

Thanks for this video - I recently moved to York as I'm a first year student at Uni of York. I really wanted to know where all the bookshops were, and I'm now excited to be able to visit these bookshops in January. I didn't even know the Minster Gate Bookshop existed and it looks fantastic!!!

What a great book-lovers' day out in York. I am very jealous that you found a copy of The Far Distant Oxus at such a bargain price, albeit a bit battered! Lucy Worsley (who pops up on an earlier comment on the history of carols) recommended it, in an interview, and I've been wanting to read it ever since. I would have snapped that copy up! Good for you!
