i highly appreciate the small red highlights showing what is tyler talking about
also editing as been so damn good lately!
i know, the channel has noticeably improved since tyler brought on a second editor to share the load. i think the first guy must have been starting to get overwhelmed, and i don't blame him! editing hours of tyler down into little bite sized videos is no simple task!
I love how you explain the logic behind the marking.
I like rules like this. As a sudoku fan, I find that variants like killer sudoku make the game more interesting and also easier, since restrictive logic also means you always get more information with every tile you fill. Very fun!
might I ask what killer sudoku is? I find the base sudoku very fun, but I haven't heard of the variant before
@@Meme0Lord0Jeff so in a nutshell, extra "cages" are drawn around cells on the board and each one contains a number in the top left corner that the digits in the cage have to add up to. usually you can repeat digits in a cage as long as they don't break the basic rules
@@Meme0Lord0Jeff look it up lazy
Yeah, variants on puzzle games like sudoku and minesweeper definitely makes for a much more fun experience
imagine putting tapa in sweep
The "Outside" here is a common puzzle variant I've usually seen referred to as "Caves". One of the simplest rules you can determine of a Caves puzzle is that there can never exist a "checkerboard" 2x2 area. This is because you will ALWAYS isolate an island, like you showed at 15:44- so any configuration that creates a 2x2 checkerboard is automatically able to be ruled out.
And "Wall" here is a type of puzzle called "Tapa"! So interesting seeing these pencil puzzles overlapped with minesweeper
Yeah, if you have 2 diagonal mines with the opposite being non mines, you need to connect the non mines around a mine, which means it can't touch the border.
“Dual” isn’t the same, but it’s very similar to another very memorable puzzle.
I’m mad. Bizarre and amazing. You’ll never see this video.
that could be a huge spoiler
I wonder how Minesweeper and Sudoku can be combined.
Tyler's slow descent into the logic puzzle rabbit hole. Before long he'll find out about GM Puzzles and join Puzzle Grand Prix.
i actually would love to see him do videos about it, i'm pretty sure a lot of this channel's viewers would enjoy it if they knew about it
If you liked the Wall Minesweeper Variant, you might also like the puzzle it originates from - Tapa. There are a few very interesting extra rules, for example all mine fields must be orthogonally connected, which leads to insane logical deductions. I urge you to try it out, it is maybe the coolest kind of puzzle I ever played!
this variant feels like if you turned hexcells back into minesweeper
It also is very reminiscent of picross (also refered to as nonograms)
Tyler: If you want a tough Minesweeper, maybe try Hempuli's Cavern Sweeper. Each mine can have both different shapes and different power.
"I like your funny words, Magic Man."
Featured rulesets: [W] [Q] [D] [O]
[S] - Standard Minesweeper rules
[T] - Tic-tac-no
[M] - Some idiot put an extra mine in the grey squares!
[Cc] - The minefield is colored like a chessboard
[L] - The clues are one off of the actual amount of mines near them
[+] - Two random rules put together
[W] - Great broken walls of minesweeper
[Q] - a mine for every 2x2!
[D] - introverted pairs of mines
[O] - paths of mines inland, all else is a chunk of non-mines
[O] too
Just a quick thing to note: [E] is now [C] in the main game. [E] is something completely different now.
Hope that didn't ruin your bit too much
@@dackid2831 Thank you for telling me this. I’ve been posting a comment like this on every 14 minesweeper variants episode he does, so your information will help me get old rules up to date.
Honestly loved the editing on this minesweeper video, very clean subtle way to direct our attention that wasn't distracting!
The Outside puzzles were really interesting, felt like more different lines of thinking than a lot of the other variants.
And oh god, combining these is scary already lol
Hey, the rulesets of these videos make me think about the pencil puzzles found in online puzzle contests (the Wall ruleset being very close to the "Tapa" puzzle type and the Outisde ruleset being close to the "Cave" puzzle type), i think you would enjoy them and they might even be good content for videos
The website logic masters india recently hosted a contest called "PANFOPCWHTTAPA (Picking A Name For Our Puzzle Contest Was Harder Than The Actual Puzzles Are)" which is a good introduction to those puzzle contests (they're originally done with pen and paper but a very good tool for solving them on computers is usable)
Another Video! Always great watching your videos Tyler, and great editing by Dan! Love the colors to help in the explanation
I'm so happy Tyler returned to this gem of a puzzle game
Oh my god the editing here
Wonderful job, whoever did this. Thank you!
spoiler alert for the one of the rule
one trick that you can do with the outside rule is that you can't have a 2x2 checkerboard of mines and non-mines, I can't really explain it on words but someone on the replies has explained it
For those who don't want to look up the video: Start with a 2x2 checkerboard of 2 mines and 2 non-mines. In order for the non-mines to connect, they have to "wrap" all the way around one of the mines, therefore making it impossible for that mine to connect to the edge of the board.
An easy way to see it is to realize that since all empty cells have to be connected, there must exist a connected path of cells between the two empty cells in a 2x2 checkerboard, and since they touch diagonally this forms a loop, preventing at least one of two mines from ever escaping outside to an edge.
I see. You must be the one who write B E A M in their The Witness playthrough.
yeah but it's huge spoiler for who don't know this
@@sangchoo1201 whoops sorry, I need to be more careful when I comment, should I delete this?
Yes, timer for all puzzles games that you are doing would be great :D awesome vid as always!
I am playing this game. Since every rule has a lot of smaller levels for practice and it is a hardcore puzzle game, efforts are behind the cut version. Hat off to Tyler and Dan! Btw the key to outside puzzles is never make a diagonal cross with 2 mines and 2 non-mines.
this is an incredibly good video 👍 great explanations tyler and great editing Dan
It's like non-hexagonal hexcells
"It can't be this domino because then it would form a weird macaroni of them."
why is this making me laugh so much
I actually happen to know the tricks for “outside” pretty well from variant sudoku. Having a checkerboard pattern is never tenable because it requires cutting one or the other off from the rest of the map because of orthogonality rules
I love the names he gives the shapes, like a "domino" and a "macaroni elbow".
That last one really reminded me a lot about an old game app I played a lot called Nurikabe Vault.
You had a few numbered tiles on a board saying how many tiles of wall that number takes and then you had to draw an empty path surrounding each just like in the video.
Learning ab logic while being entertained!! Thank u
Strong Cracking The Crytic vibes in this video
I love it! You guys would get along pretty well
Expert mode makes all "guess tiles" a Schrodinger Mine
man these videos are too OP to just have one like button. on every new challenge i keep scrolling down, thinking to myself, that tyler has earned a like, for how great he explaines the rules, and plays the boards out. but i already like the video on the previous problem.
what am i supposed to do. solve this problem please tyler senpai
The way of solving the Dual mode kinda reminds me of the Battleship game: you search for 2x1 ships and then clear the space around it
I love these crazy minesweeper games can you play more 4d minesweeper? That was really cool to watch
I love the flag clicking noise
finally, a complex puzzle game tyler plays that i can actually understand and play on my own!
Expert mode is the most insane idea ever, wow.
This version seems like it would be easier than normal minesweeper. Not only do you know how many mines around a cell, you know their groupings.
I love this game. I'm working on mastery in all the playstyles in all of the sizes.
A new 14 minesweeper varients video today and a Shotgun King video tomorrow? Holy shit this is great.
Last set:
Tyler: Bingo Bango Bongo obviously a these 11 are mines.
Me: [dialup noises just trying to comprehend the rules, nodding in bewilderment.] OBVIOUSLY.
This feels like a Kahn academy video for minesweeper
That expert mode is reallly cool
its out! woop woop!!
Love these
Tyler out here casually playing minesweeper with proof by contradiction
Minesweeper variants that really make you think
And Cheel in the Background
The perfect video for me :)
Wake up babe new mine sweeper just dropped.
The flag at the end is the start of the levelset menu ;-) It represents the base level set which you are currently playing, but with some exploration and completion others will soon appear.
Yup, been playing this game for the last couple days. The bottom right (I think E) of the basic levels is super difficult IMO
Damn finally a difficulty that helps a lot.
Imagine Quad with only a 2 at the beggining
playing this at 0.5 speed makes tyler drunk
Maybe a week or so ago I downloaded a minesweeper app and watching you play minesweeper has made me not a total plebian
God I would have loved playing this game myself. Looks like a ton of fun
You might be interested in the indie game Splice. It’s a bit of an older indie puzzle game, but I remember it was notoriously difficult when it came out
CZcams giving ads for Patrick’s Parabox on Tyler’s channel is an awesome coincidence.
I was literally about to say this games fully out cause I just finished playing each different difficulty
this feels like a combination of minesweeper and picross
Love this game!
I'm gonna wait on watching this series, I want to play the game myself first.
Ok these new variants are siiick
the modes afterwards are even cooler
For the last puzzle, you can deduct that no 2x2 can be formed in a checkerboard pattern, i.e. where two flags are in opposite corners, which would have simplified the logic considerably
The editing here must've been a pain, godspeed
That first genre is based off a logic puzzle called Tapa. The last one is based off Cave.
My minesweeper skills have gotten so rusty but this looks fun
Tyler, you need to play Pixoji. It's absolutely nutty with the hint types. It's not minesweeper but similar.
Minesweeper but there is math involved!
So basically, minesweeper : but in hell, got it
How the hell did you make minesweeper entertaining
as soon as i saw the minesweeper "wall" rule I was like. Holy shit. It's nonograms. It's nonogram rules in minesweeper?????? 10/10
oh... minesweeper expert mode. I like that. if there's the chance of being wrong the game will make sure you are. That's nice.
"quad" can also be named "Hallways" because no group of numbers create 'rooms'
Ah Yes.
Killer Minesweeper.
3:05 - How is this cell never a mine? I think you got lucky.
Oh this is like minesweeper and picross... This is rather ok for minesweeper variant for me
Tyler's ancestor is Sherlock Holmes
16:17 replay button
God I love minesweeper
Hey ! If you like games like hexcells and minesweeper variant, I think you will probably love Patterna if you haven't done it yet. It takes hexcells rules to the extremes
So expert mode is murphy's law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong and all that
Just waiting for the next potionomics video …
Everyone knows the best minesweeper is minesweeper mode in google snake.
Can't believe it! That means there's a 24 tile possible! (888)
this means that one of those 3 is a mine.
which means this is not a mine.
which means these 2 are mines
which means this one is a mime too.
x
The last one has a lone one
I really think you would enjoy cave puzzles if you enjoyed the logic in that last variant.
I can't even understand the hard level minesweeper logic
mine mine mine mine mine mine mine
Brilliant solution to the broken game of minesweeper
Expert mode = ALMOST Worst possible luck (otherwise it would be impossible)
So basically you do math while playing minesweeper. Cool.
1 4 looks like a glider to me?
I got a Patrick's paradox ad before this video lol
Well this is significanly easier than normal minesweeper...
Was CavernSweeper also one of these games that just came out?
Well, well.
He explained everything extremely well and I still couldn’t understand a damn thing. I’ll never understand this game
how many "mine[s]" that tyler saids through out the minesweeper?
No way I just got an ad for Patrick's parabox
Imagine not knowing how to sweep
It looks like ? Means that theres something in a row but its outside the 3x3
tapasweeper
