- I really liked the writing in this show abt failed blood testing startup; Theranos, and made an edit comparing the show and real clips that were available. enjoy !
The difference between Amanda's performance and Elizabeth's is that Amanda is playing a character who the audience knows is a psychopath, but is trying to put on a performance of a kind and trust-worthy person, while Elizabeth is actually playing a kind and trust-worthy character, who the audience doesn't know is actually a psychopath.
YES thank you. Its a dive inside her mind, (although irl if her being a sociopath is true, there isn't nearly as much emotional conflict in her as they showed in the series). if she just did what we all saw then it wouldn't be any different than just watching holmes' life unravel irl
Exactly.
well said.
That BLEW MY MIND
Mind blowing and well said
I think Amanda made a few necessary changes to make it more 'cinematic'. The longer pauses and extra shaking is for the tension. Movies are always a bit exaggerated, and they need to be. Otherwise, it might as well be a documentary.
I'm sure Amanda was instructed to be a bit more dramatic, and she did a phenomenal job.
Also, I think the reason why Amanda didn't copy everything about Elizabeth's behavior, is because it would look cringy and carricature-ish. That's why actors make changes and don't copy the person they are portraying too much
It makes sense, yeah. Cinema is attempting to capture the feeling that real life often subdues. Amanda’s performance really increased the anxiety. I can feel like if I was in Holmes’ position, I would actually be miserable.
I just finished the show with Amanda Seyfried. And I feel like in a few ways the TV show was actually LESS dramatic than real life!?! I notice that Elizabeth's real hair in interviews is more disheveled looking than Amanda's, also I feel like Amanda didn't lower her voice to the same unnatural deepness that Elizabeth did. It's a strange situation of life being weirder than fiction.
im the last bit, i swear i saw another version of elizabeth holmes taking just as much time to answer. i might be a victim of the mandela effect, but I still think this video has a cut for the real life version lol
No she didn't
Amanda did a good job but still Elizabeth's acting skills are better
Haha real fraud acting 😭
This should be the top comment 😂😂😂😂😂

Of course! That's how she became a successful fraud.
If I ever get infamous, it's comforting to know that I'll be played by someone infinitely more attractive than me.
Amanda couldn't quite get her voice as low as Robot Elizabeth, but otherwise she gave an Emmy-worthy performance in The Dropout. It takes a lot of work for an attractive, engaging, charismatic actress to transform into whatever the hell species Elizabeth Holmes is.
I think the voice came out as intended. Elizabeths normal pitch is probably naturally lower (and then she lowered it even more) - if Amanda had tried to get there, it'd have sounded silly
@@mialia15104 but Elizabeth’s voice does sound silly.
@@w.t.1338 Well yes, but in a serious psychological thriller movie like this one I think having the main character who is supposed to be psychopathic would be in poor taste. Could you imagine Birdbox with Sandra Bullock sounding like Mickey Mouse? People would think that it's a joke.
Amanda said she got her voice as low as she could, but there were physicsl limitations.
Nobody has Elizabeth’s voice
I’m not a medical professional and still an undergrad myself but after hearing more about this I’m really confused how anyone ever believed her or her company’s blood testing thing would work

I want to moisturise Elizabeth's hair so badly!
Lmaoooo. For a billionaire her hair looks so bad. It's so dry 😭
Omfg I wheezed laughed
It just screams split ends right?
Honestly I was wondering how they got Amanda's hair to look like that too. Did they just bake it with a flat iron?
And dry her pores.
I love the way Amanda moves her lips when she talks. That little gesture make her look creepier and hence more accurate. She was amazing.
It does not make sense. Why correct the actual character? After all, the whole thing with Holmes is because she wasn't making all those gestures. A trickster who shakes and rolls her eyes? Laughable.
@@jakubzmijzielina Because it's a portrayal. It would honestly be pretty boring if she just did whatever Holmes did without the added gestures which adds tension. She's not here to deceive you like Holmes, she's here to show how scary Holmes is or can be.
I honestly feel like it looks unnatural and exaggerated
Holmes come across much more confident that Seyfried
And I don't like what Seyfried does with her jaw... Why is it so tight when Holmes' jaw is so loose? 😔
You are mistaking confidence for sociopathic! Seyfried did a great job, but she has emotions unlike Holmes so it was hard for her to be so robotic. She did a great job though. She nailed her for the most part.
Guys, it's not impersonation, It's acting. Actors try to capture the essence of the subject, not necessarily impersonate it.
Oh yes, that tight jaw thing just ruined the whole series for me. I really hope that future dramatizations of the Elizabeth Holmes story don't have that tight jaw thing. If their going to do a proper impersonation of Ms. Holmes, actresses simply must loosen their jaws.
This will sound controversial, but I think Seyfried adds more emotion because if she played the character as robotic, she would ironically look like a bad actor…Holmes is so unexciting the character would look boring if played that monotone
The difference between Holmes and Seyfried's portrayal is by the time The Dropout aired we were all in on the "gag" as it were. Playing Holmes strictly as herself would have actually made for a dull series, Amanda injected enough knowing into her portrayal to keep it grounded in reality but with that knowing wink to the audience that says "we all know how this ends, right?" Seyfried was just phenomenal in this role. I actually felt a little sorry for Holmes.
Never feel sorry for a narcissist like Holmes, she relies on that to absolve herself of guilt or remorse of any kind
Elizabeth Holmes needs an Oscar for her acting, she fooled everyone.
NOT ME, WITH THAT CRAZY VOICE I KNEW SOMETHING WAS OFF
Ony simps.
I think Amanda looks too unhinged unstable, and insecure. The real woman seems calm, still, confident, and calculated (which makes her all the more creepy)
Elizabeth's eyes are freaking haunting
I think Amanda Seyfried did a phenomenal job in her portrayal of an actual living person. I don't think I'm impressed by many actors these days, but I am impressed with her performance and think she deserves much greater credit than she seems to have gotten so far.
I'm not sure whether the real Holmes or Seyfried looks creepier on that stark white background with the fluorescent lights illuminating their eyes. They each look disturbing and uncanny in different ways - Holmes' eyes are totally dead and vacant like a doll's or a robot's while Seyfried's look like a cat's or a reptile's.
Exactly.
I think the makeup that they did in Amanda helped her eyes look cat or reptile-like, her eyes look fierce rather than the empty ones she was portraying. Maybe if they followed the shape of her eyes when putting the eyeshadow instead of the winged eyeshadow, it would probably suit her? (Idk)
I think she’s supposed to be a snake lol
Amanda is too intense with her delivery. Elizabeth is actually less harsh. I think Amanda saw how intense Elizabeth's eyes and mouth were and couldn't break down the difference between that and Elizabeth's more controlled disposition.
But now that I think about it. We had to get a better glimpse into what we are actually seeing inside Elizabeth's mind and feelings or else we would never think that Elizabeth knew herself to be a con. So I guess Amanda's performance is spot on in need for cinematic narrative.
Amanda is playing a normal human being, with unusual drive, who got in over her head. This is not who Holmes is. Homes is s psychopath. None of this raging tension and terror under the surface was ever there.
Amanda’s Elizabeth is definitely not a normal human being. She’s humanized a bit, sure. But she’s most certainly not normal. She’s at best a deluded, self-righteous narcissist.
The show does display her psychopath tendencies though
Exactly
EH always has a smiling face... because she is proud of lying and manupulating... they never show.
Amanda is showing
Reminds me of how Ed Kemper was portrayed in Mindhunter. Based on available footage of him, the real life Ed Kemper seemed like a genuinely nice and ordinary guy. Kinda terrifying considering what he did. The actor who played him, although he did a phenomenal job, played a much creepier version. Something about his performance was just unsettling.
This is just how it goes in dramatization of real events, as can also be seen in Amanda's portrayal of Holmes. Reality is heightened just a little.
That is an apt comparison.. it’s a bit hard for the audience and actors to ignore hindsight ..
I agree and i don't really buy it because of that. Maybe it's an artistic choice and that's fine, but i personally had a hard time watching Amanda in this role and believing her.
And if he portrayed him just like irl, then people would say "In the series he was portrayed as a nice guy while irl he was a psycho", just goes to show how people change their minds
The show tried to make her appear more “unstable” and human whilst in reality she was ruthless, confident and intimidatingly psychopathic.
I think it would be very hard to imitate her. As one would have to completely suppress all emotion and the try to emulate emotions in a logical and learned way.
THIS! It seems in a few scenes, the maker tried to whitewash her image. For me she is downright psychopath.
Amanda Seyfried deserves an Emmy for her portrayal of EH.
JLAW is going to take her shot at it, so well see.
@@carlosrivas1629why tho

She’s good but Lily James’ performance just sticked with me more..blew me away. Her vocal transformation, accent, pacing, tone, and the physical transformation all the prosthetics, false teeth etc And she acted her socks off through these which is very hard can’t imagine.
@@carlosrivas1629 what limited series jlaw did?
Amanda's eye makeup application isn't crappy enough, and I feel they should have done more with it to imitate Holmes's sanpaku.
Elizabeth Holmes has the some of the most chilling eyes I’ve ever seen
Omg right? Im shocked not more people are mentioning it here her eyes are freaky. She scares me to be honest.
I think Seyfried overdid it with her acting. Holmes looks so natural with her lies. Seyfried looks like she's shaky in a scheming way. Holmes was scheming, but you can take it a notch down with the "show don't tell" because everyone knows Holmes' story.
She's a dude playing a dude disguised as a shaky dude
Well, it is supposed to be a dramatic portrayal.
She reminds me much more of Kristen Stewart than Elizabeth Holmes.
I like how they changed "daddy" in the letter to just dad. A necessary change for today's audience lmao

Idk, I don't feel like Amanda nailed the spookiness in Elizabeth's eyes. But that's not to discredit her... I don't think anyone but a real psychopath can pull off those crazy eyes
I think Amanda captured Elizabeth's true essence that Elizabeth was masking so well.
Amanda's portrayal is bone chilling. She added some of her own flair but the way she constantly nods when talking, the deeper voice, the intense stares, basically had to dehumanize herself. She did amazing in this series.
"Elizabeth Holmes’ is a story that could happen only in America...Others will judge the technical aspects of Theranos, but the social implications are vast."

I feel like elizabeth smiles a lot more
Yeah especially her eyes. They don’t look mean but Amanda’s eyes portray more dramatic and mad-scientist crazy lol
Billion dollar smile- she is a great sales person of her vision even though it was flawed
Elizabeth did a much better job of playing herself.
that took me a minute ngl
😂 Ha ha, true!
The reality is Holmes was clearly a psychopath and we could all see she was unhinged. No actor could deliver that without looking like a ‘ham’ but I think Seyfried is doing as good a job as any actor could because Holmes herself was acting the whole time.
Amanda really did an amazing job. She blew me away.
To me, the most telling sign of her narcissism is the Charlie Rose clip. Watch as she ONLY smiles whenever making eye contact with him, and not when she is looking away while trying to think and articulate. It's as a tool, as though she is a salesperson and it certainly isn't a smile used genuinely but rather, to manipulate.
Amanda Seyfried nods and shakes her head too much. Holmes is very steady compared to Seyfried. My guess is that Seyfried might be doing this to make Holmes appear as though she is always searching for the answer. Seyfried hesitated way too long compared to Holmes when Holmes replied she didn't have very many secrets. When I look at Seyfried's performance she comes across unsure of what to say next. When I look at Holmes, she comes across as Dustin Hoffman Rain Man.
Amanda Seyfried isn't actually a nerd con artist with psychopathy. So, generally, Seyfried's face is more expressive and alive. I think a consistently realistic recreation of Holmes in a fictional film would be unwatchable for most people. Nerd con artists are generally only attractive at all to other nerds -- Holmes would not have succeeded in another time in American business culture.
@@emoedison Thank you
Elizabeth does shake somewhat during the Bill Clinton interview and the white-background promo at the end, so it's not out of nowhere. But Elizabeth's shaking comes across as nervousness. Amanda exaggerates it a lot, and I agree she's doing it to reasons you said.
It's funny you mentioned Rain Man, as I have a theory that Elizabeth has high functioning autism (formerly aspergers). It came across in the Charlie Rose interview the most...the way Elizabeth looks down like that and talks in such a deliberate way. That's not her searching for answers/lies like Amanda's portraying...that's her actually trying to recall what she wants to say and kind of force the words to come out. She has to look down because eye contact will ruin this whole process...classic autism symptom, among other signs I've noticed.
Jennifer Lawrence would be better?
@@DarkSpiderZero the relationship between autism and psycopathy - is psychopathy “on the spectrum”? A form of autism? A symptom? Something else? - is actively debated by neurologists and psych. scientists.
I feel like Amanda is almost too pretty to portray Elizabeth. But, she got the voice and mannerisms down.
Great acting but somehow miscast I think. Amanda portrays Elizabeth with a sort of terror and tension boiling beneath the surface. It is nowhere evident in Elizabeth.
She humanises her, a good thing usually for morally grey characters. I think Elizabeth hews more to the darker tones of grey than light.
Amanda is showing all over that she is plotting. EH is smooth.
Also their face shapes are totally different, Amandas eyes are far apart so we cant get the same stare out of her!
A phenomenal performance. This series really had great casting!

Although Amanda's acting was great but she made her more of an awkward anxious person where the former is cold and emotionless person.
People were impressed that she was 19 when she started.... If I were applying for an Executive Administrative Assistant position somewhere, they would want someone seasoned, older, and with a lot of experience. She was 19. And a drop out. And she gets applauded.... The people that got screwed in this situation should have needed a few more credentials than what she brought, or didn't bring, to the table. They wouldn't have hired an unseasoned Executive Assistant, yet they invested all of this money into her untested theories.
IKR!
Connections and privilege makes fools lose their money.
It's a very slight thing, but I feel like Amanda is doing a "deep female voice" and Elizabeth actually tried to sound masculine. It's almost like she was trying to imitate Zuckerberg or Jobs. Just that very flat.. "bad imitation of a dude" voice, the kind of thing girls do when they make fun of guys. I still think Amanda did a fantastic job though!
Yes! She's doing the voice that a lot of women do when jokingly imitating there husband. Deep and kinda dopey.
@@EmeraldAshesAudio Exactly
I like her performance. I don't want just a carbon copy of Holmes, I wanted to see a portrayal of her behavior plus having an insight what she's probably thinking in those moments. Amanda did that with the nods, long pauses and even her eyes.
I think Amanda’s long pauses was the only one I didn’t like. She looked like she didn’t have confidence. And the real holmes looked like she had by speaking without pausing.
I don't work in the medical field and the claims seemed fantastical at best.
How everyone was just giving her millions of dollars just because is beyond me.
All she had to do was keeping working on the tech and nothing else. She was trying to be famous. If she stayed in school and was honest, she would’ve been able to invent some kind of blood test technology that actually helped
Not necessarily. There are plenty of people who graduate engineering school who don't create groudbreaking technology or tech that works. They just plug away...
For a female Bill Gates/Steve Jobs she couldn’t recall over 600 things it couldn’t be more hilarious
nah, the actress didnt even come close the psychopath this woman was...
Unfortunately, Amanda could not lower her voice an octave like Elizabeth could and did
As a 26 year old entrepreneur, i was looking for inspiring business movies or series to watch. It is now 3 AM, i could not stop binging The Dropout series. I stumbled onto this without diving too deep in the trailers. During episode 1,2 and 3 i was rooting for Elizabeth because the entrepreneurial spirit it takes to overcome obstacles. About 4 episodes in i started hating this woman with every fiber in me. By the time she changed her voice to be more "deep" i was about to pull my hair out. Can you imagine the bone chilling shock i got at the end of episode 8 when they started listing the real-life case updates, it was literally just then that i realized this was a real life event. I am young and not from the US, so i never heard of Theranos or the real Elizabeth. This is insane on a level unimaginable. Elizabeth, you are a disgrace to all Women, Humanity and the entire Entrepreneur Society. The fact that even after all this, you can remain cool about your crimes proves you are a psychopathic monster with alien eyes, a demons hart and an insufferable pretentious voice. I hope justice prevails in honor of all lives lost, families ruined financially or in health. F YOU!

Interesting how she’s owning up to how Theranos was never about the people and helping others but it was about HER. The vehicle used was Theranos but she her intentions weren’t about about “people not having to say bye too soon” all of that was performative.
I think Amanda Seyfried did an incredible acting job on this series
It's literally in Elizabeth's eyes. They're uncomfortable to look at, because they're devoid of anything that makes us humans. Empathy, conscience.. Amanda nailed Elizabeth's voice perfectly.
Elizabeth Holmes reminds me of a person in 1900 demonstrating a machine that can play chess, only with a real human being inside. Today, good chess computers are as small as a pocket calculator. In 2060, Holmes' idea will be a reality.
I think her ideas and visions are brilliant but they're poorly executed.

Amanda replaced Kate McKinnon after Kate dropped out last minute, and I keep thinking about how Kate would have mastered the role. Amanda is a good actress but she does not have the look and can't master the voice. Kate's facial features are more similar to Elizabeth's and she has a naturally low voice

Honestly this Elizabeth person looks like someone with zero credibility. I mean it's literally there on her face, in her mannerisms. Right there. So when someone says that they don't like a particular person because of how they look and talk, it doesn't always mean that they are being judgemental or mean. It sometimes means that they can just see through the garb.
It's obvious that this was the direction if the film to try and make this psychopath seem somehow more forgivable for all the harm she caused.
If it’s even possible, Amanda’s eyes are scarier 😬
It’s all in the eyes… So many big tech people and billionaires have either that wild unhinged look… or like a dead almost emotionless look

Her voice sounds so deep compared to Amanda’s
Her voice creeps me out. To me it really shows how dissociated she became with herself
The Emmy is hers, and if she doesn’t win then I’ll be stealing one for her.
One look into her eyes and you know she cray. How did people miss this?!
I read most of Carreyrou's book and watched The Dropout and think that both Elizabeth and Sunni were painted in a far kinder light in The Dropout than either of them were worthy of.
I believe I had a narrow escape with Theranos - back in 2012 I was working for a company that was going to be contracted for a British subsidiary of Walgreens who were opening diagnostics sections in their stores, I had to sign an NDA but never discovered the company I was going to be working for. I believe it was Theranos and the contract never came to fruition.
