When I was a kid, I attended a performance of Bruckner's "Te Deum" in Cleveland. Unknown to us, a large contingent of the brass section had been stationed in the rear of the auditorium in a high balcony. When the piece reached the Last Judgment part, so to speak, near the end, the "heavenly" brass instruments began to play and took everyone by surprise. From there to the finish, it was goose-bump city, I can tell you.

The last performance of Bruckner's TE DEUM ,which Bruckner himself attended, was conducted by Richard von Perger at the suggestion of Johannes Brahms. On his copy of the score, Gustav Mahler crossed out "für Chor, Soli und Orchester, Orgel ad libitum" (for choir, solos and orchestra, organ ad libitum) and wrote "für Engelzungen, Gottsucher, gequälte Herzen und im Feuer gereinigte Seelen!" (for the tongues of angels, heaven-blest, chastened hearts, and souls purified in the fire!). The composer himself called the work "the pride of his life".

This was also done in 1979 when he visited Japan with the Berlin Philharmoniker. By the way, that day was a coupling with Mozart's Requiem.
It was, in fact, an unprecedented expedition to Japan on an unprecedented scale that was not feasible in Salzburg, Vienna, or even Berlin. Perhaps there was something in Karajan's own heart that he had for his second home, Japan. BPh's very special full-length, all super-first-class chief players and world-famous soloists, and the Wiener Singverein Chorus, which he was also a lifelong music director like BPh, was a gorgeous in Tokyo only. These were the nights of the concert only in Tokyo Japan. Now, if there is a video of the performance at the Fumonkan Hall at that time, I definitely want to see it. I wonder if it exists somewhere.
Here are the schedule for the historic performances in Tokyo Japan 1979. ↓
The Berlin Philharmoniker Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan performed in Japan in October 1979 a total of nine times, all at the now-defunct Fumonkan (Suginami Ward) in Tokyo. It was like similar to Das Große Festspielhaus in Salzburg.
16th = Mozart: Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, K.543 / Richard Strauss: Symphonic poem "Zaratustra Talks" op.30
17th = Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor "Tragedy"
    18th = Schubert: Symphony No. 7 in B minor, D.759 "Unfinished" / Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op.64
19th = Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 in G major op.88 / Mussorgsky (Arranged by Ravel): Pictures at an Exhibition
    Mid-day break
21st = Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, op.125 "with chorus" Anna Tomowa-Sintou (soprano), Luza Baldani (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor), Jose van Dam (bass)
22nd = Haydn: Oratorio "Haydn: The Creation" Anna Tomowa-Sintou (soprano), Peter Schreier (tenor), Jose Van Damme (bus)
    Mid-day break
24th = Verdi: Requiem Mirella Freni (soprano), Agnes Baltsa (alto), Luis Lima (tenor), Nicolai Ghiaurov (bass)
25th = Mozart: Requiem in D minor, K.626 / Bruckner: Te Deum Anna Tomowa-Sintou (soprano), Luza Baldani (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor), Jose van Dam (bus)
26th = Verdi: Requiem (Solist is the same as 24th)
In addition to the lineup of famous songs with chorus, Mahler's Symphony No. 6, which was a hot topic when the record was released the previous year, was a "heavyweight" programming with many things to listen to.

This is the first large choral work I sang as a member of the newly formed RTÉ Philharmonic Choir in Dublin in the early 1980s. I was winging it as a new member, a credible tenor but couldn't sight read for toffee!! But I got there. Haven't listened to this piece in decades and forget about those very long, sustained noted the choir have towards the end and all at the top of their range, sheer cruelty, but what a piece!!

Che dire? Siamo all'alfa e omega dell'interpretazione. HvK e i WPh stupefacenti more solito.

This is the first performance of this that I've been able to get though to the end. Great musicians and conductors make an immeasurable difference in people's appreciation for the arts. An ex-girlfriend of mine was dying to hear what all the fuss over Ein Deutsches Requiem was about, so I ran out and bought her a recording of it of her own, but she told me it was the most boring thing that she'd ever had to listen to in her life. Well, I put that recording in the trash where it belonged, and gave her my own copy of Karajan's performance. Suffice it to say, that was enough to make her a Brahmsian for life.

Funny as I think Karajan is a complete failure in the Brahms Requiem. The Verdi Requiem he really had down, but the Brahms he just drags out and the chorus muddles the text so that you hardly understand a single word they are singing.
I know the '64 and '76 recordings. Maybe the '83 recording is better, but I doubt it, since he never drastically changed his approach to any of the works he recorded multiple times.

This is not the Mass text but an ancient hymn of praise, joy and thanksgiving to the triune God composed at least as far back as the 4th century and included in the Ambrosian hymnal of Milan. It is often sung on great occasions. I remember reading how Charles de Gaulle marched through the streets of Paris on the day of liberation to Notre Dame Cathedral where the Te Deum was chanted as gun shots could still be heard.

A most simple way to learn Latin and translated languages like Chinese based on Herbert von Karajan conducts Bruckner’s Te Deum.
That is because our eyeball moves faster from left to right (or right to left) than up to down.
