  • I've been bidding a tenner on ebay for one of these wee locos for ages as I have seen them go for between £8 and £20 regardless of condition. I won this one for £6.51. It's a great wee loco but that short 0-4-0 wheelbase doesn't like diamond crossings! I have a plan for that in the future though once I get some 4 wheel coaches,

    Hi Bill, have just the fix for you, when you get your coaches, convert the one closest to the loco with pickups, adding this with the connection to the loco cures the problem, you can permanently couple the coach or wagon, or fit a small plug. With the Pug (even smaller) they look good with a shunters wagon, again wired with pickups, hope this helps

    A great little bargain for under £7. Very nice locomotive and looks really smart in the C R livery. Many thanks for sharing.

    Very interesting video, love the 040 pug. What a great little locomotive. Yes going over points ect can be a problem with the short wheel base, but still a great loco. Well done .

    Hi Bill..that pug looks and runs great. As others have said, aux pick ups would do this loco proud. But it copes with all but the crossings as is. A joy to watch

    For the crossovers and points try a small piece of silver foil over the plastic touching the rail on either side carefully cut and that should cure the problem. That is a suggestion from another You Tube site called Budget Model Railways. The newer Hornby 0-4-0 you will find are very reliable, attractive, as well as being cheap to buy on eBay.

    Bargin loco and in exellent condition, the screw in the middle dosen't need to be taken out to remove the body, it holds the motor mounting bracket in place.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah I know after undoing it. I wish it did hold the body on cos the way the body fits on is awful.

    I saw another video where this Loco was stalling on points and the guy opened it up and although there is a pick up on each wheel, only 2 of them were connected so he soldered some wires on to the ones which were'nt connected direct to the motor and he says it worked and is a lot smoother over points.

    Thing is too, people think these are made up, fictional engines but they were very tough engines working in busy yards and often with a little shunters wagon with a days worth of coal lumped on as these had very small bunkers. St Rollux works I seem to think they came from, only sticks in my mind cos it rhymes with er more spherical attachments that amused us kids trying to say rude words without getting caught out lol.

    I love these little pugs and I have bought an ex-Mainline 3 plank wagon to use as one of the makeshift tenders they sometimes had. I'll follow your 'plan' with the 4-wheeled coach with interest as I'm sure it's the same thing I have planned for the 'tender.'

  • @PeterJewell2
    @PeterJewell2 Před 3 lety +1

    @00Bill -- Don't go removing the extra components attached to the motor. These are more than just a 'suppressor'. They are a later development added to slow the thing down, as the earlier models were notorious for hurtling around at ludicrous speeds. Seems at least partly successful.
    BTW I recently discovered the model is based on the Caledonian Railway 264 Class.

    Same design as "Smokey Joe" first released in 1983 and still in production I believe. Plenty on eBay and easily customised with acrylic paints.

    • @markchambers3833
      @markchambers3833 Před 8 měsíci

      I think the CR ones were first released about 1981. The models from the first couple of years had handrails along the sides of the saddle tank (you can see where they attached in the moulding of the later models).
      If I remember right the CR was a limited run for the first couple of years. The ones in LYR livery look pretty smart, think that was later on in the 80s.

    Can you make a permanently attached tender or wagon with pick ups, that'll help with the crossing issues.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah it's the only real solution to the problem. As soon as I get some 4 wheel Caledonian coaches I plan to see if I can rig something up along those lines.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  Před 3 lety +1

      A lot of searching and a lot of luck. I often just stick a max bid on and just see what happens as I did with this loco. Occasionally luck prevails but I probably bid on a dozen of these before I got this one.

      Patience is the key. I've had some real bargains, including a London Transport -liveried Hornby Pannier for under a tenner including postage! But at the moment, prices have gone bonkers, so even greater patience might be needed.

    Is the frog not electrified?

    • @PeterJewell2
      @PeterJewell2 Před 3 lety

      Crossovers are not made in Electrofrog form. With points you can use the action of changing the points to set the polarity of a metal frog. There isn't that action available with a crossover. A live frog crossover would be possible, but it's not a simple thing to wire up nor control.
