I bought an old Ford Tractor! Let's cold start it and plow some snow! - Vice Grip Garage EP58

- I needed a hand around the shop. So naturally, I just bought a tractor instead of paying someone to help. I found a really cool old ford 9n south of town and had to have it. It's got a full hydraulic loader, working 3 point with a blade, and she even has high low! It was left in a tree row, and we fought pretty well to get it home. Let's see if it will start, and put it work plowing some snow!

Thank you bud, appreciate you watching
I have been looking for a Ford tractor. Please keep your videos on your repairs coming. Thanks Bobcat 2313
I thought a front loader tractor was an unnecessary luxury until I borrowed my buddies... hope he never needs it back... no going without one again if I can...
Hey thanks. Don't even need to watch the video now. Got all the ol' one-liners right here in the comments.
T VOYDS Well A Fella Like Me Is In The Same Wheel House As A Fella Like U.. Sooooo... It’ll Be Fine.. just fine
I'd definitely like to see more of this.
I second this.

@@ViceGripGarage This Ford tractor video is why I subbed to your channel. I've even watched some of your chevy videos just for laughs. What do Ford and chevy owners have in common? They both want to own Fords.
I, too, have stopped midway through a self inflicted disaster to remind myself that "this is fun".
A fella should make a vidya or two of his ol'sweetie... betja she'd get some likes !
1950 it'll be an 8n. The 9n came first, then the 2n then the 8n. Go figure. I got a 8n in the back yard I'm working on, sure do love them.
Agreed
This is a 9n or 2n it has the big bolt pattern on wheels
The eccentric way he speaks of himself in the third-person puts a smile on my face.
The tyre chains are good. They are holding the tyres together. its a lovely old tractor. LOL

Your dry humour is king!!! That's the key to all this! And i love it! You apparently learned a lot from your dad. I don't know much about that situation... But i have watched your video's everyday. And kinda feel like your quoting him in your own ways. But i could be wrong. "I dont know". ✌,If he still is around, maybe add him to a few vids. I bet he would be a blast! Man he broke the mold with you! I hope you know that!!!!. He must, or had to be a fighter! Cause you never give up! When life hands you lemons, you just add way to much gas!!!!!!! 😆 maybe I've had too many cold snacks!!!! " I dont know" 😆
That seems like a pretty solid old tractor. My dad does all his snow clearing with a 60s vintage Massey Ferguson 35, it’s got a 6’ blade mounted on the front and a 6’ blower on the back. I love old tractors
I've got a Massey 35, awesome tractor! check it out: czcams.com/video/RqpzZSjQ23o/video.html
I grew up on old tractors. I just purchased my first new tractor........ a Kubota. WOW..... is all I can say. It is so much safer and easier to run, not to mention the hydro is tits for plowing and bucket work.
I learned to drive on an old Massey Ferguson 35 in 1960. God I am old
135 Ferguson with 3 cyl Perkins, best small tractor ever made, i kid you not
"giver her the onions". geezus. I busted a gut at that. Thank you for contributing to my fun fun Friday in Texas.
I had a 51 model, when it would start to run like your did it was almost always the carb was gunked up and starving it for fuel. The carb is super easy to work on.
"The bad news is it makes no sense financially." Lmao. I've only watched a few of your other videos and to be honest I like them.
Hell yeah a VGG video, perfect Valentines day gift just what I wanted
Really enjoy the old tractor videos! I’m in the middle of resurrecting a 1952 Ford 8N that sat under a cedar tree for 15 years! Look forward to seeing more on the old Ford,
More tractor stuff! I love tractors. I dig the other stuff too, but I’m really looking forward to seeing more on this tractor!
I had an old 9n very similar to this one for several years. Probably the best running and easiest starting engine I have ever had! Just don't get the ignition wet when you are plowing snow.
18:50 Almost managed to go the whole vidya without a Ford joke, you Chevy guys just can't help yourself! 😂
Ford makes it sooooooo easy...
Fuck that was funny to see the battery sailing over his shoulder, had me chuckling
We can't, lol🤣
You're so right.
Easy pickins' really...
"There's your problem...Says Ford on it" lol Thanks for the upload!
Great episode. Look for a relief valve on that external hydraulic pump. You can adjust to eliminate the engine stall at end of stroke or heavy lifts. Have a great day and keep the videos coming.
Sweet ! I grew up running that Ford tractor. It was so nice with the PTO.
Please do more of the tractor fixing and plowing. That was one of my favs so far. Thanks again for the excellent content. So funny.. the ford battery lol

My favorite tractor of my childhood. Born in 1951. This one is newer but great memories.
Yesssss finally guy was needing something to watch before the ol valentines day dance
Holy Cow you needed a tractor! Can’t wait to see this one. Hell no, excellent choice, can’t go wrong with the old Ford N series. Happy Valentines Day friend. ❤️
RSC-RedScreen Chaser when I saw it on the trailer my heart lept... grandpa had one that was the yard tractor at the shop. The number of times I slowly walked alongside that bucket dangling a Cummins 444 off it, headed for the next truck we were headed to bolt into some guy’s OTR... memories man... omg...
NOTHING looks like that Ford N-Series bolt-on loader!
I just bought a nice one last fall. 53-56 jubilee. Forget what year it is. Jubilee I think was only a couple years. Now I have 2 !
@@johnharr9707 First overhead valve Ford tractor, right? You're right, I think the 600 came out in '55
Mark Covey yes my dads he left me is a jubilee 600. The one I just got last fall is a 56 or 57 I think. The jubilee came out on Fords whatever anniversary.
I have a 8N that was my Grandfathers. He farmed with it here in the Willamette Valley from the mid 1950's on. I want to add the front bucket conversion so I was interested in seeing how that one was added on. Also on the tag end of the straps, I roll them and use one or two small bungees with the ball on one end to secure the roll to the straps
Your personality is amazing and you seem like a great guy to be around!
I’m a life long mechanic and tinkerer also. 3 weeks after my wedding 22+ years ago I was changing a batree in a Deere tractor and pulled that same 1/2 wrench out of my pocket and temporarily induction welded it between my new wedding ring, the wrench, positive post, and the batree box. Still have a free scar tattoo on that ring finger today so don’t even need to wear a rubber one like all u guys. Keep up the great old school content, love it VGG!I
I had slag from a mig welder hit my tungsten ring. I wear the same scar! I now wear the silicone rings .
Love this channel! TY to you and your family for always making us smile.
Respect from Wisconsin and much love to the VGG family.
Had a 2n/9n with the original 6V system, generator and all. Never failed to start. Always sounded like it wasn't gonna start but then just fire off. As long as the governor is working properly, those beasts would go through just about anything........ The torque would easily rotate that 4500lb beast on them rear wheels......plenty times I had to change my shorts.......Thanks for the great memories.
You had me in stitches when you were performing your 120 point safety inspection! 🤣. Love your channel 👍
Deffinately more follow up videos on your tractor realy did enjoy this one.
I like how angry she got after starting once you played with the loader hydraulics.
A bonus with the blade and bucket you don't need a factory parking break, just drop them down, turn into the uphill if you're on the steep never hurts either.
Love the tractor! Have had many N series. Loved them all. 8n started production in 1948 (hence the 8 in the name) and the 8n had the small bolt pattern on the rear wheels. That's probably a mid 40s 2N. The 9n started in 1939, and the 2N started in 1942. The 8N ran from 1948 to 1952. So with a 2N or 9N rear and front wheels, and an 8N engine block, I'm guessing someone swapped engines? I see it has the Sherman over/under drive, which is pretty uncommon, so no matter which it originally was, I'd say a guy got a darn good tractor! My guess is a 2n swapped with a 8N engine. Keep up the great videos. By far the best channel on youtube right now!
I had a '53 Golden Jubilee...worked that think from dusk til dawn for years. The carb is fickle and needs adjustment throughout the day as she gets hot. Dad would always get on me about "monkey-ing with the carb", but you could make small adjustments and keep the power up all day.
"I'll just ignore it until it starts a fire" lol
😅😅🔥

Yes definitely do more videos on the old girl. Thank you for sharing.
63 was a vintage year for those sparkalaters....fine taste and aroma. That tractor looks like the one Bill Elliot won the last race at the Richmond fairgrounds.
No idea if you still have this old boy but if you do, please bring it back sometime!!
“A little barley....”.
that was a blue BL can so we all know you were just adding water... 😂😂😂
Or fuel lol
Water just helps clean up the spark plugs. Trust me, I read it on the internet somewhere
@@Timbobjr Back in the 60 s we used to dribble water down into the carb with the engine running to de-coke the chamber, there was also a kit you could but on Exchange and mart to heat up water by wrapping a tube around the exhaust and spray into the intake.
@@johnhopkins6658 I've seen kits nowadays that spray cold water into the intake to cool the engines. Like the opposite almost
A little water going into a hot engine flashes to steam, cools the internals, frees up the carbon deposits, and makes more power. They do it intentionally in high performance diesels for race applications. It's not the best for the fuel system and carb itself, and too much will corrode the cylinders, but since he mixed in some HEET in there, the methanol will scavenge up the water and it'll pass right on through.
Hardly any cheech and didn't even need Cosby in a can! Just loyal. 👌Mint!
Love this channel Derek your comedic relic is awesome just what I need during this virus lock down keep it up you rock
I fold the excess straps into an 18-24" length, starting from the loose end to the strap. Then, after lifting the ratchet handle, I insert the lower side loop through the handle and then through the upper side loop, pull tight, and then push the ratchet handle down to lock.

I love all those technical terms, a guy can learn alot by watching these videos. Thank you. Great video.
Thank you for your your funny take on things that you obviously know. We’ve all started out like that and it was all trial and error.
Love your vid of the Ford 9N, actually all your vids that I have seen are great! I used to have a Ford NAA tractor. It was the love child of the 8N and 9N. As soon as I used it for plowing the garden, all of a 30' run, I hit a submerged fence post and broke the ring and pinion. It took me most of the summer working weekends on it to get it fixed. As far as I know it is still running and was a fine tractor. Two things to mention. 1) be careful if you use the PTO with a device that has kinetic energy built up from running as when you go to stop you won't be able too because the kinetic energy from your device will back feed into the PTO and keep you moving. Get a free running clutch for your PTO. 2) My NAA it had a positive ground for the electrical. It looks as though yours have been changed. Also try running the choke closed a hair and you won't have the stalling problem. Have Fun...
This would definitely make a for a great “must watch tractor series”. I will def. tune in to this tractor series if you decide to give it a go.
Love those little tractors they have just st the right amount of power to get what you need done. A guy just might enjoy watching videos on something like this.
I used to have a Ferguson TO-20, virtually the same tractor, except for the continental motor and positive British electrics. My fuel tank was full of crap too. Had it hot tanked after a couple dozen cans of brake clean lol! Cleaned and rebuilt the carb and replaced points and plugs with wires. Then she ran great, all 23hp!
I own one of those stubborn barely 20 hp tractors.. It was my dads.. Been using it to move bees, rocks, and it is still a stubborn tractor in a montana winter i hope i find more vids on this stubborn tractor
Love the old tractor. Reminds me of the one I drove at a golf course years ago. I would like to see you fix it up.
Yes! More tractor repair work, that'd be great fun! Great video.
Love watching your videos. You prob know this by now, A 50 is a 8n. 39-41 is a 9n. 42-47 is a 2n. 48-52 is a 8n
Nice to see a fellow hoser dry humping the hood / gas tank combo to get the beast cleaned out...a treat that gets repeated too often ! Loosen the radiator lower bolts and you can crash it into the fan and lift the hood off w/o removing the steering wheel ! Only better fun is changing the spider spark opener, setting gap and condenser hold down nut with the radiator and fan in the way......
You're my favorite CZcamsr! I have a 41 9N, it was awesome seeing this pop up on my screen this morning. Cleaning that carburetor will probably make it run much more better, you have the symptoms mine did with a gunked up carb. Guitar strings work great for cleaning the passages in the carb. Judging by the tubular style radius arms I would say your tractor started its life as a 2N probably '44-46 and then got a 8N engine implant. Thanks for all the entertainment and knowledge!
Its got 8n running boards as well. maybe made from two machines
you've got to do a 302 swap in that thing!
I spent a non-rcoverable part of my youth driving a 9-N in MN winters (60 years ago).....just had a chill!
This has to be the most detailed and intensive walkaround ever done on VGG. No stone left unturned.
Looked more like gas
Know who invented the phrase, “if it ain’t one thing it’s another”? Every guy with an old Ford tractor! If you love fixin stuff you’re gonna love that machine!!!!
Timber Hole
My dad use to always say "if it aint one thing. Its half a dozen others"
He also liked "they get you coming and going "
Ive found his favorite quotes to be right on the$
He's also going to need a lot more hammers. My dad use to refer to them as "Ford Tuning Forks" or "Ford Adjustment Tools".
I’d pay good money for an auto unload feature as smooth as that one!
I can listen to your one-liners all day!
Got a new rim I didn't notice, that's nice.
The wiring is, you know, it's completely trashed. There's zip ties everywhere and nothing is the right gauge and there's Walmart fittings. So...I'm gonna leave that - cuz that's fine.
So, you know it's gonna do wheelies...I like that.
My dad showed me a way to take up the strap slack. Leave a 4 inch or so hole in the center, and wrap it up in a circle. Leave a foot or two before you get to the rachet, and run the remaining slack through the center. Since it will be doubled over on itself, you flip it around the coil, and pull tight, it will keep it from unravelling. There's some videos on youtube of this method, it's a game changer!
Would love to see more on this. Hope you can get it running strong! Love your videos, I laugh every time.
Well would ya lookit that? Uploaded just in time for a guy's lunch break!

Great stuff, as always. The Ford 9N has always been my favorite tractor. A guy definitely wants to see more fixin' on 'er.

I'm getting addicted to your videos! I've got a Ford 8N with a six volt system and Walmart wiring. I've got to do some McGyvor (?) fixing on it so I can use it again. It's been 90+ degrees working in the sun and I get burned out at times. I have to put a starter drive on it and hope to convert it to 12 volts with alternator set up. Keep making videos! Lots of us love to watch you and your family turn swine into gold!
A friend of mine overhauled an 8 N years ago. We put it on a dyno and it pulled a whopping 16 H.P. at the PTO! Enough to pull the mower he had on it.
Good to see a guy's projects go like mine whenever I get to spinning the old wrenchalator on my junk in all my free times.
9:36 this adjustment adds horsepower and aesthetic appeal.😁👍🏻 it’s difficult to keep the women off with a sweet ride like that, I know.
For Straps, Roll your straps up leaving about a foot from the ratchet with a hole in the middle about as wide as the strap, then fold that foot left over and poke it through the roll. The loop that's now poking out gets pulled over the roll and pulled tight. Bam Happy strappy
I got a 1952 8N tractor that I keep outside, and tarp over to keep rain and snow off it. When I crank it up in the dead of winter in Michigan, it starts like it has electronic ignition, but it doesn't. I does have a 12 volt system though. I have the exact 6 foot slider type snow plow that you pull behind. I bought it new, and the salesman said it's made in Italy. I wax the blade to get the snow to not stick to it. I don't have a front bucket though. If the snow gets too high, I abandon the tractor, and get out the Sears Craftsman snow thrower. Now that maching can handle a 24 inch depth of snow whereas the Ford tractor cannot with just a pull behind blade. But we also have the capability to rotate the blade 180 degrees, and push snow out of the way by just driving bachwards.
2:23 as a swiss guy... I felt that. A little too much actually. Everything is so damn expensive!
*spits coffee* OMG A LITTLE BARLEY 😂🤣😂🤣😂
My grandfather had a 1950's 8n Ford tractor. Seeing your old Ford brings back memories!
Now, that's a tractor! Don't know why I never saw that video until now, but I've piloted many a Ford tractor. Several with blades in back. Never one with a front loader. We always had skid steers for that. Wish I'd seen this sooner.
4:20 - Squirrel!
That tractor is like the one my grandfather had on the farm when I was a kid. He had it hooked up to propane rank mounted to the front that he refilled using an adapter to the tank he used to heat the house. He would let me ride over the engine with my legs hanging over the sides like riding a horse while he brush hogged…Lots of memories for me and eventually switched it back to running gas after he passed away. Thanks for the video Derek!
When I was 20 years old we had a 1949 Ford 8N sitting for 15 years without running and we decided to get it running and we sold it. It has the exact frontend loader just like yours.
