    I live in Kent and the trains into London are getting busier and the strain on the local stations when the ticket offices are closed is increasing.
    If the ticket offices are shut and the machines are down (again) or there is a huge queue and people can't buy tickets onbaord because it's too busy for the Train Manager to move down the train it ends up being a huge queue at St Pancras as people buy tickets and create issues of over crowding.
    This is all put in place by people that have not bought tickets in years as their PA's buy and expense them.
    Start making MPs buy tickets out of their own pockets each day at the station to see a positive change.

      True, but a bigger factor pushing up house prices and keeping wages stagnant is the switch to two breadwinners per family, in the recent generation or two. Houses aren't now sold for what they are worth, compared to the era of the sole breadwinner, they are sold and rented for how much the seller/renter can leverage out of two wage earners.

    • @steveparker8065
      @steveparker8065 Před rokem +18

      @@GreenMorningDragonProductions Yea, that's partly my point. But the main factor was the sale of 2 million council houses and the lack of any new social housing. Over 40% of that housing ending up in the hands of private landlords within a decade. Not to mention new legislation that prioritizes landlords over tenants. They're squeezing the market through a lack of investment, increasing the price of existing stock considerably.

    Yeah, Mick Lynch is right, even when they aren’t striking, our railways aren’t fit for service. I sometimes have to travel down to London Euston on the Manchester line, a major railway line, and I have the choice of paying astronomical ticket prices if I travel peak (£300 +), or travelling off-peak (still expensive), and often standing for the whole way because the trains are over-full. And don’t mention the bloody cancellations. Apparently it is even worse if you try to travel east to west, or vice versa.
    I don’t blame the railway staff, who are trying to make this really crappy system work, and have to bear the brunt of customer complaints. No, I’m angry with the greedy companies who are responsible, the government who think this is acceptable, and these journalists who just parrot the party line.

    The journalists (and I use that term loosely) are pedalling the nonsense from the government and train companies. Maybe some of them would do well to use the trains over a period of time and then they might understand what Mick and his collegues are up against. I guess it will also need their bosses to not be pressuring them to not criticise the government or big business. I needed to get from Upminster to Exeter yesterday during the strike on the underground. And I'm partially disabled. I went to the overground station and used the ticket office and also got advice from the human beings there. I've always found the railway staff very helpful. At Fenchurch Street I had to walk to Liverpool Street, which I can manage at my own pace. And again I asked the staff at Liverpool Street for advice. I then took the Elizabeth Line to Paddington and the excellent GWR service to Exeter. One aside - I carry an air quality monitor with me and it always warns me of the poor air quality inside the train once it switches to diesel to complete the SW part of the journey, as they haven't electrified the rail network in the South West. So we get poisoned by diesel fumes on the platforms and in the trains. I worry for the staff as they are exposed for far longer periods to this carcinogenic pollution than the passengers. Sadly I didn't see any pickets on my travels as i would have liked to show them my support. I hope they can hold out and win for all our sakes.

    as someone who only uses the train for leisure purposes and lives in the north west of England I can confirm they are an absolute nightmare. Unreliable to the point where I'm put off planning on doing anything or going anywhere because trannspenine and northern as well as Avanti on the west coast mainline are persistently cancelling trains minutes before they are due. At least when its a strike day you can plan around it happening. They constantly hike the prices, the service has gotten worse and yet they continue to operate with ridiculous profits.

      I’m a rail worker and a commuter via trains. It’s awful, the amount of services that are cancelled primarily due to a lack of staff. The TOC’s just want to squeeze every penny out of government subsidies and the government are more than happy for that to happen. I suspect that many peers and ministers have skin in the game in terms of dividends. Ever wonder why so many of the privately educated go into politics, I doubt it’s a sense of public service!

By shaving off employees constantly they will end up with automatic trains with no human involvement either on the trains or at stations and cancellable whenever they wish so driving passengers away. Just imagine how vulnerable a young woman could be in a moving train when no windows or doors could be opened to a predatory male with no staff at all on board. Just a perfect recipe for disaster.
