  • In this video I will be sand casting a replica of a real Trex tooth. This is the largest Trex tooth ever found. The casting weighs 8 pounds and is 15 5/8" long. I melted the bronze used to make this casting in my home made furnace.

    This step by step is simply fascinating. I mean, I love watch a man work with his hands--car mechanic, construction worker, hunter prepping his catch, it doesn't matter--but your vids show a calm assurance, like your hands could do this task without aid from your brain. Thanks for sharing.

      @@robinson-foundry I was thinking why did tou make such a heat shield - because I didnt notice one on your previous videos 🤔.
      Did you burn your hands or other failure ?

    • @robinson-foundry
      @robinson-foundry  Před 3 lety +1

      @@DragonAtelier the heavier the crucible is, the closer I have to put my hand to hold it securely. I have burnt my hand through the glove before so the shield is crucial for longer pours. Not so much on shorter pours. I'm going to make something nicer looking soon. It works for now. Its amazing to me that only a very thin piece of aluminum keeps the radiant heat away.

      @@robinson-foundry aaa got it. Thats what I was thinking. Me myself use proper shielded pouring gloves cause the same - I have burnt my hands couple of times 😆

    Awesome casting! Why not add the tin first? It's not going to boil like zinc would, and the liquid tin (in theory) would transfer heat to the copper faster, thus resulting in a quicker melt.

      Sockets for bolts?

    • @ThiccboiSalmon
      @ThiccboiSalmon Před 3 lety

      @@robinson-foundry As in for spears or bronze age axes. Where you have the two sides of the sand mould and a third component that you cast around that is the negative of the socket you wish to make. They are really tricky to get right and there are many ways of suspending the 'core'. I used this historical method to make a socketed garden fork.
