Those sounds are so nostalgic, I remember playing this as a kid. Loved the creaking door sound effect and the exotic bazaar tune.
I never thought about the logistics much, but in hindsight it was astonishingly advanced for 80s technology.
Yep, those sound effects take me straight back to my childhood! The mechnical and electronic mechanisms are quite ingenious really. The game still holds up really well too in my opnion, and I still enjoy a game with friends on it even now...
Was playing this last night, my pal managed to get a mint condition original for £200, totally worth it, fantastic game, and so many memories
I had this board game. I can remember eventually losing all of the pieces, at the very minimum I can recall having the tower and it still worked around 1987, took it in the car to the drive in movies quite a few times. It was my version of a tablet back in Chicago in the late 80's. I got it as a gift in 1982, My Grand parents were visiting aunt Auras house in Chicago heights and being a spoiled brat, I insisted that I wanted one after playing trying it out at a neighbors house....
Return to Dark Tower is currently being shipped along with the expansion. Hopefully be here tomorrow. I only saw my parents playing this board game and remember trying to look at all the screen in all sides. Thank you for even having a working tower and showing how it works. This has been rather informative.

Great great memories this game brings back to me..It was really astounding, a quantum leap in board game world, nothing could be compared to it in that period, NOTHING indeed!
Recently I happened to replace my tower, no longer working, with a working one, purchased on ebay. It is now back fully playable!

P.S.: when you get lost after a 'move' command, you have to put your figure back in the previous space, not leaving it there:)

I still have this in the box, haven't played it since the mid 90s. Heard there was a sequel to it. I'm gonna have to try it out again
These sounds are etched into my brain. Now to get a pocket full of quarters and head to the arcade. Will stop at the hobby store on the way to look at AD&D miniatures.
I have loved this game since I got it for Christmas in 1981. My family are reluctant to play it with me because I know how they're doing in battle from the sounds, and when they're awarded a wizard.
I have one criticism of your demo - you're moving the wrong way around the board. Play is made anticlockwise through the kingdoms.
I wish my game was in as good condition as yours, my flags have long gone, my dragon has a broken ankle, I'm a Pegasus card short, and the plastic scorecard holders are well beyond repair. On the plus side the spare bulb is still sealed in its plastic bag.
Long live Dark Tower! I'm keeping my eye out for the rumoured reboot this year.

Good point about moving round the board the wrong way, I'd just got the tower working after 8 years of it being out of action and must confess I hadn't reminded myself of the game rules before making the video! Yes it's a miracle the game is in such good condition, I was a very destructive child when it was purchased for me in '81 and broke a lot of toys. I guess I must have liked this game enough not to destroy it. Hopefully the tower will keep working for a few more years yet!

i used to have this game but lost it in a bad move/breakup situation. today my current partner texts me "check the porch" it's a big box, delivered to my name, i opened it up and to my surprise, it's "return to dark tower" holy crap

I have no memory of the Vaccu-form Trays for the tablets at all!
Yeah I've seen quite a few photos of Dark Tower complete sets without them. I guess they didn't come with every version of the game?
@@richsmusictechstuff6786 they did not! But also some of the colors of the board pieces were different--and the board colors are different on yours as well. Along with different electronic components in the tower itself.
Funny, I didn't think the game was around long enough for all that variation.
@@Slaintemaith That's right it was only around for a short time before a legal dispute forced MB games to halt production. I wonder if they were experimenting with different moulds and plastic types during the short production run.
Dunno. I just got some parts to help complete my original kit. A couple more on the way. Now I just have to make the tower functional again. =)
@@Slaintemaith Nice, glad you're getting a full set together. Had mine since new and by some miracle is pretty much complete. Hope you get your tower working! I had to do a bit of work on mine to get it working due to some corrosionon the battery terminals...
I dig the rests for the cardboard scorecards could you fill me in on them? We didn't have those in the u.s. loose my keys after changing the pegs after a misadventure.
Thanks for your comment! Yes the plastic rests for the score cards are original. I've owned the game eince new and they came with it. Strangely they aren't even shown on the photo on the back of the box!
What about Ask Zandar?
Never had that one, by that time I'd moved on to Sega Megadrive :)
