    It's a shame that your channel doesn't have more views, it's by far the more interesting top 10 movies of the decade I've seen. Not only for the diversity of the choices, but mostly for the justification you give for every pick. You gained a new subscriber and I encourage you to continue!

    The Tree of Life is similar to Kubrick's 2001 in that you are probably not ever going to have the desire to rewatch it but it is a film that is worth experiencing. It is beautifully shot.

      forced myself to rewatch "Tree of Life" with a class. Didn't grab me like Malick's other rewatchable work (Thin Red Line; Days of Heaven). You're right: editing and cinematography are amazing.

    It's funny that you mentioned Mad Max Fury Road popping up on a lot of top 10 lists. I noticed that as well. I saw it when it first came out and back then I thought it was a decent movie. It has seemingly aged well over the years because it was not celebrated as a masterpiece when it was first released in theaters. I'll admit that after going back to the film just recently, I like it much more after rewatching it. It is a beautiful film.

      yes, great looking film. I really like George Miller a lot. wasn't as complex as a great movie needs to be for me. Time will indeed tell. Also, it's part of its era, in which movies are being remade out of the parts of older (1980s) movies. Still like "Road Warrior" and "Beyond Thunderdome".

    After stumbling on your channel from a search for thoughts on Kiss Me Deadly, I took the liberty of scrolling through your videos to see what else might be of interest. A piece on One False Move (great and underrated) and why Parasite is overrated (I wholly agree, hated the tone) and then seeing so many other great pieces on directors and films I love. And here Mike Leigh in your top ten of the decade too. A new subscriber for sure!
    Off to watch your pieces on Wages of Fear, I Know Where I’m Going, Scarlet Street, Sturges, and top ten POW, along with many others.
    Also, I’d never heard of Breaker Morant at all, and on criterion too, a must see for me now, thanks!
    And please watch Tampopo if you haven’t already, a little gem.

      Thank you and welcome. The Breaker Morant gets among the most intelligent and informed comments on this channel, which tells me that it attracts and provokes thoughtful viewers. Yes. I will check out Tampopo.

    Hi, Dr. Matthews. I discovered you today ( I saw Rashomon for the first time and found your good analysis of it.)
    Interesting list you have here. The Tree of Life was my favorite of the decade. As soon as you showed the clip, the music and images produced instant tears (and I'm not even religious). Your #1 was a pleasant surprise. Cave was a spiritual experience for me and its one of my favorite Herzog films.
    One movie, off the top of my head, for best of the 20 teens: Pixar's Inside Out. Such a great movie about emotional development told as a visually spectacular adventure epic.

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello and welcome. There's both a Tree of Life video, and a Cave of Forgotten Dreams video on this channel. A bunch of Herzog material here, as that's what I started out with when I began the channel.
      I'm wondering if Inside Out will last or not. One question for me is whether its view of the mind is cultural or more than that.

    • @clamourincessant6974
      @clamourincessant6974 Před 2 lety

      @@LearningaboutMovies Thanks, Dr. Matthews. I'll check those vids out. I forgot to ask: If Tree isn't your favorite Malick, what is? I think both Knight of Cups and To The Wonder are severely underrated. I prefer Malick's late period to his 1970s work. Have to see Badlands again. Thin Red Line is a masterpiece, though not as good as Tree.
      Tantalizing thought on Inside Out, which I hope you elucidate on in a video or essay. I believe its view of the mind was based on the work of a noted psychologist/neurologist? of emotions. I don't recall if his view was the scientific consensus.

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  Před 2 lety

      The Thin Red Line is not only my favorite Malick but among my favorites of any movie. I agree on Knight of Cups--I made a "what makes this movie great?" video on it.

    This list will be much different than yours because I don't watch a bunch of Art House Movies, they're usually a hit or miss to me. 1 Inside Out

    3 How to train your Dragon The Hidden World

    5 Avengers Endgame

    Nightcrawler is definitely a top 10 of the 2010s for me. Not only is it a critique of the profession of journalism but of capitalism as a whole since Gyllenhaal's character is rewarded for his sociopathic and unethical behavior.

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  Před 4 lety +1

      in my longer writeup of that movie, I mention that 20% or so of CEOs are supposedly psychopaths. Probably would happen in a lot of systems/societies, though. Could be true of politicians or preachers, too.

    Honestly, I was very surprised to see "Big Hero 6" in the honorable mentions. Considering that Disney is at all time low since the late 2000's, to see it as one of "the best" movies is really baffling to me.
    Honorable mentions in no particular order:
    Arrival 2016,
    Mutafukaz 2017
    The Dictator 2012
    Babadook 2014
    My Top 10:
    *10* Revenant 2015
    *9* Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
    *8* Bird Box 2018
    *7* Chappie 2015
    *6* IT 2017
    *5* Ei8ht 2016
    *4* Ethel and Ernest 2016
    *3* House That Jack Built 2018
    *2* Hereditary 2018
    *1* Az Ember Tragediaja 2011
    I guess I also had hard time choosing the best movies of the decade (mostly because my "to watch" list is longer than "already seen" list). All of the movies you mentioned except for Dunkirk are on my "To watch list". I don't really go to the movies anymore, so I haven't seen many films this decade. But after watching all of the movies I have on the list my Top 10 would most probably change.

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, something on this list, probably a lot, is outrageous. I thought Big Hero 6 was the best of the manic comic-book-ish movies for kids, and even though Disney has been junk for decades, even they can produce one decent thing once in awhile. I do have several kids, so my views get skewed by other people, which is the same for us all.
      Big Hero 6 is quite good on the purposes of science and tech. It deals with grief and trauma in ways that not many movies like it do. I was surprised that I even cared about it. However, most of the people I know love "Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse," but that was too manic for me.
      Your list is interesting, and I have not seen Hereditary, which looks good. Also, is your #1 an animated Polish movie? I will look for that.
      Chappie is underrated. It sort of disappeared in the US very quickly.

    • @LearningaboutMovies

      I always want to love Interstellar as some kind of complex statement, but I cannot get over the ad hoc tesseract aliens/future humans, plus the movie's final solution to environmental problems. It's an example of great spectacle that doesn't make it to profound, artful observation.
