  • Cyrus the Great is probably the most impressive ancient ruler you've never heard of, and Rise of Persia, a total conversion mod for Rome Total War is all about his conquests and the founding of the mighty Achaemenid Persian Empire. Featuring a wide array of factions including (of course) Persia, but also Babylon, Media, Egypt, and the Greek city states of Athens and Sparta, the mod brings to life a very vibrant and underrated period of ancient history.
Courtesy of the talented modder Lucius Papirius Cursor, Rise of Persia has now been ported to Rome Remastered, improved with bug fixes, new factions and more. It is available on the steam workshop.

Hey folks! Unusually, we played two different factions in this stream, so here are some timestamps for those so inclined: Sparta gameplay begins at 10:15, Persia gameplay is at 55:33

A longer-term youtube campaign of one of the LotR mods would be awesome. I loved the dwarves of Khazad-dum series.

If you are interested in this period, I recommend channel named History with Cy. The guy covers bronze age, Achaimenid Persia and Greece

55:45 fyi, Persepolis (Parsa) was made the capital by Darius, in the next generation. You're playing as Cyrus (Kûrus), whose capital was Pasargadae (Pâthragâda). Persepolis is about 25 miles southwest of Pasargadae.

Persian Fire is a great read! The rise and peak of the Persian empire is one of my favorite periods in history so this is a real treat.

Lucius here, thanks for doing a play-through of this port! A couple of points below to differentiate this from the original RTW mod:
    1) Sparta can build walls now because the conditions in the EDB file that disallowed Sparta from building walls were crashing the mod in Remastered. Instead of simplifying and fixing the conditions, I opted to give the player the option to build walls or not as Sparta.
    2) All factions are now playable in the campaign map.
    3) Some factions have new units included from the unfinished / unreleased Rise of Persia 3 mod. This is specially true for the Barbarian and Steppe factions which had incomplete rosters in the original RTW mod.
    4) All Strat map and battle map unit textures have been upscaled. This is my first port to include upscaled textures. After doing this I went ahead and updated the 77BC port with upscaled textures.
    5) The background script that manages 4TPY and manages the creation of political buildings in settlements has been greatly simplified thanks for the new Remastered scripting features. Due to this, I believe turn times are faster than in the original RTW mod.
The port will remain in Beta since there will always be improvements you can make, and small bugs here and there to fix.

In the US, we had an (also now defunct) chain called Best. The showroom had glass cases and you would point out the things you want, which would then come down a conveyor from upstairs where the warehouse workers fulfilled all the orders.

Always love to see more TW on the channel! I had to uninstall my TW games to make some space for other games, but I'm feeling the itch to play it again.
Looking forward to the return of Magaryx (sp?)!

Persian fire is a great read, if you don’t know much about the period as it deals as much with the Greeks as with the Persians, so if you know a bit about ancient Greek history it’s a good way to sort ground the period in relation to Greece and what’s going on there at the time

Most people would want to see Sparta... and then there's me, seeing an Egyptian faction, knowing it would likely not get a spotlight.

Just fyi since you like history Sparta had a democracy way before Athens. There were ofc 2 kings but also had Apella (male spartans above 30yrs old) which they were voting for decisions such as war or even punishment of Kings, then there was Gerousia ( 28 old spartans + the 2 Kings ) making sure apella was making the right decisions and above all there we the 5 Ephoroi the ultimate approving and cheking body, changing every year and ofc ephoroi and kings were having trials and could go to jail for their decisions.

Sorry if this is wet-blanketry, but from what I've seen in Mongolia and in Mongolian regions of China, Mongolian horse archery is very much a sport, not part of daily life, and has been so for generations at this point. Now, that's not to say that boys don't get into said sport when they're still really young...

That is exactly what I meant. I'm not under some sort of illusion that Mongolia is still literally living in the middle ages 😂
