Eighteen months in the making, and 1,400+ hours of research, writing, recording, AI-upscaling, animating, sourcing and editing later, the anticipated Part 3 of my cyberpunk documentary miniseries is here!
THE EVOLUTION OF CYBERPUNK covers novels, comics, animation, television, film, games, philosophy, hacking, VR, simulation theory and The Matrix phenomenon. Learn about the second trilogy from cyberpunk author William Gibson: Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties, and discover the brilliant satire and criticism of modern America in Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.
Jack in to cyberspace with the origins of hacker culture, its impact on us during the advent of the internet, and how that informed our worldview of the information superhighway, and films such as The Net, Hackers and Johnny Mnemonic. What inspired us to invest so much into virtual reality, from the Virtual Boy, to injecting VR cameos into movies and shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Wild Palms, The Lawnmower Man, and others? And how did monumental video games such as System Shock, System Shock 2 and Bioforge influence us as players?
For the send-off, how did philosophy and existentialism surmount in such treasures as Philip K. Dick's novels and research, eXistenZ, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor, and most notably of all, The Matrix? In summary, we will try to answer the eternal question, "Are we living in a computer simulation?".

Thank for your hard work Indigo!!
I see you have Crusader 1 & 2 on there. You had me at hello, but now I wanna talk about us.
Thanks for the hard work
@MenaceInc As is the case with all greek words that have been "englishized", I'd argue it doesn't really matter because the pronunciation is unavoidably way off anyway (although evangelion specifically is almost 100% pronounced as it is in greek). I mean "galaxy", which you use as an example, is very different than the original greek word and the letter "γ" isn't even pronounced in English. So yeah, whatever.
@MenaceInc Which one are you talking about?
"Thank you for watching"
No, thank YOU for making my dream documentary, really.
Glad you enjoyed!
This is one of those moments when you can just already favorite a video without even starting it because you know it's gonna be good.
Agreed, I almost never like a video before I finish watching it but just going by previous installments I knew this was going to be epic.
I sure did!
Get outta my head! 😀
feels lackluster compared to the other way too much philosemitic references were made.
100% I was not expecting a 3rd part of this fantastic series, I'm gonna enjoy every moment.
I had not realized how much the cyberpunk genre had shaped my outlook on life until this multi-part documentary. I eagerly await the next part of this amazing series.
Applies to me also
Same!
Agreed
same here!
Same here! Can also see how it's shaping our present and future as well. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a city like Night City be built, or Cyberware becoming a thing. As awesome as it would be, it'd be rather crappy to live in too.
This is probably the greatest 3 parter CZcams has to offer. You have done good work. You should be proud

Zuckerberg 2021: This is my idea now.
'can I copy your homework?'
'yeah just change it up a bit so it doesn't look obvious you copied'
'ok'
As I usually was one of the best or the best in mathematics in my class, people frequently copied my homework. I've realized that they tend to do stupid mistakes just because of not understanding what they're doing. Zuckerberg did the same with metaverse. It won't work.
Zuckerberg: A creature which attaches itself to an innovator host, consumes it and shits out a poor imitation. Even if you did not see the Zuckerberg attach itself to its prey, you can always recognise its faeces - it look a lot like dog shit.

"Indigo has made a complete cyberpunk documentary."
"What do you mean by complete? Which subjects does it cover?"
"Yes."
It's fairly comprehensive, but part 3 implies it's not complete, and it's to be continued...
Facts
@@Indigo_Gaming Clearly it can't be complete without Deus Ex ;)
@@michass Deus Ex, the Matrix sequels, Altered Carbon, Minority Report, Dark Angel, Charlie Jade, Mirror's Edge...there's still a lot of cyberpunk media to cover. Just because we're living in a cyberpunk future (and have been for some time) doesn't mean there haven't been entries into the genre.
Totally.

What a masterpiece! Also, thank you for Part Time God. What a banger!
Thanks for watching and tweeting about the video! Yes, I really enjoy that song as well, it's got a strong "Pretty Hate Machine" vibe to it.

Hardly. Little errors and omitions deminish it like getting Christopher Lambert's (lam bare) name and missing the fact that the term matrix is mentioned in the bible. In the bible, the matrix is the womb, like in the film. And then the tv series Total Recall 2070 is totally forgotten...
I taught a course on Cyberpunk History and Philosophy two semesters ago. Doing it again, your series would be on the syllabus. Excellent work.
That's great to hear! I know it could be expanded on if done in a more academic and comprehensive format, but as a supplemental video, I hope it would help introduce people to many of these concepts/works.
A Cyberpunk history/philo course?? I had no idea such a thing existed, currently I have a Critical literacy requirement to fulfill at my college and would’ve actually been excited to take your course. 😂 you’re far ahead of the game, kudos to you Professor!
That sounds fascinating. Were you using just the source materials for texts, or were there articles written about cyberpunk out there?
YES! So happy to see the Doctor Who Gallifreyan matrix referenced here. Such a tiny detail, but as a fan of both Who and Matrix, it made me happy. Also, it's yet another testament to the insane amount of research and work you put into this series, and how that attention to detail really shines through. Excellently done.
I'm glad you enjoyed that detail! I admit I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool Doctor Who fan, but it was a fascinating detail that probably seeded the concept of cyberspace and the matrix as seen in works like Neuromancer years later.
@@Indigo_Gaming Well, if it wasn't a direct influence, it certainly is a fantastic coincidence.
One thing i noticed or realised after watching all three parts is that the reason why cyberpunk genre is so fascinating is that it caters to most of our deepest and darkest fantasies while also serving as reminder of what ramifications these desires can lead to.
The knowledge of these two things, which is the underlying message in everything you mentioned in this series is what keeps us from completely surrendering to technology.
For me, i just think at its core, cyberpunk only describes the world we already live in, except with sci-fi stuff added
I'm glad you covered Strange Days here. Such a criminally underrated movie. It's a shame it didn't do better at the box office.
Jesus Christ you just kill it. This is more compelling than anything streaming. Even tho it’s been some time anything you produce is so dense with expertise and insight.
Not surprisingly, it takes a lot of work to make a movie-length documentary like this mostly solo...
I've been patiently waiting for this. thanks. See you next year for part 4!
Maybe... 😄
Taking a break from the series as I've been cyberpunking it out for almost 3 years now.

"I reject your reality and substitute my own!" Sounds strangely more cyberpunk now than before I watched this installment.
Me who is already behind schedule with everything
Indigo gaming: do you want the get even more behind schedule?
@Brandon Knight 70% done with editing. There was scripting, recording, editing sound, gathering assets and research before that.
"Memories were meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason." That's deep. Strange Days is such a good movie.
Möbius is one of the reason i'm still proud to be French. I know it's dumb, it's not like being french makes me talented, but having such incredible artists populate your youth is fantastic.
I hope parent still have albums for their kids to stealthly read in the dark of their room, under the sheets, with a flashlight ...
This is fantastic, Indigo Gaming. This is the exact type of content I've been looking for recently. Mainstream outlets are years away from touching the Cyberpunk genre and they'll probably never match your dedication and level of detail. I loved the last two videos in the video series.
You are such a MONUMENT to perseverance that I can sincerely call you one of my role models.
Live long and prosper, Indigo.
Dude this is such a good series. Really puts shit into perspective. Philosophical. Really makes you think about a lot. One of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a good while.
Glad you enjoyed it! Took me a while to wrap my head about these concepts. Hopefully, they came across in a clear manner.
its a bunch of movie reviews
This is on another level. A more than feature-length deep dive with exemplary visual and audio quality throughout. You deserve an award for this series. Thank you for your work.
So glad you enjoyed so much! Thank you.
I'm kind of at a loss for words trying to describe how much joy it brings me to see this documentary unfolding with every new instance you upload of it. It feels like watching some kind of rare digital lotus bloom in it's own time.
That's an interesting analogy. Thanks for the high praise, I'm glad you enjoyed!
"What's more punk than challenging the validity of our universe."
The most CPAF quote ever!
Even if it would be a simulation, the simulation itself would still be a part of our universe. Just another layer of consciousness added.
That was so good that I think I'm gonna re-binge these
Hey man! Glad you enjoyed. Took a lot of work putting these together.
@@Indigo_Gaming I can tell, your stuff is awesome great!
ive re-binged these probably weekly. im hoping for part 4.
All I can think as I wrap up part 3 this morning
Easily one of the most in-depth dives into Cyberpunk. I kept expecting you to miss something, only for you to then cover more and more obscure media. I'm also surprised at just how much of it I've read/watched/played without really considering how "cyberpunk" it was.
I thought the same thing! So many of these TV shows and movies I never even associated with Cyberpunk.
Creating the most indepth and comprehencive cyberpunk documentary series there is.
Started watching. Was blown away of the extremely high quality of just the first minutes. Continued watching for about 10 minutes and decided to check if I should go and get a new cup of coffe now of after the video..... 2+ hours..... I better put on a whole new pot. This is 1 of the best documentaries I've seen. Passed it on to a few literary teachers I know that speak on this subject.
Bravo. This could’ve been a PhD thesis. A superlative analysis. Grew up in the 1980s and 90s and had already experienced many of these films, games and books - still learned so much and discovered countless new things to track down. Standing ovation.
5 hours into my first playthrough of The Ascent and this drops.
Today is a good day.
Really fun game! Enjoyed what I played of it quite a bit! I also recommend Ghostrunner, the recent cyberpunk first-person slasher.
@@Indigo_Gaming That’s next then. Just finished Observer and highly recommend it. Cheers!
Just what I needed. Today is a good day for a cyberpunk-fan!
This was insane. The amount of research that went into this series, are astounding. Thank you so much for your work and time!
This is really a comprehensive look at the genre. Better than anything I can possibly imagine on television.
I rewatched part 1 when part 2 dropped. I just rewatched both parts 1 and 2 and I’m about to dive in to part 3. Thank you. All your hard work is appreciated.
I did the same thing too
Yes, Strange Days!! Thank you!
Also, thanks for introducing other 90s cyberpunk stories I've never heard of!!
This series is the standard, it's definitive. Your time and effort here are greatly appreciated, but more than that, you've managed to produce a really engaging and enjoyable analysis of the whole Cyberpunk experience.
I can't thank you enough for bringing this to us all!
Watched the entire series twice now.
What a masterpiece, can't wait for part 4!
Nothing short of a masterpiece in audio visual education.
As a huge cyberpunk fan since I picked up Neuromancer in the 80's, you covered huge swaths of the genre I wasn't aware of. Kudos!
This is the most incredible documentary series I've seen on Cyberpunk. Really in depth look at the genre across all mediums. The presentation is truly professional and unrelenting in detail. Really anticipating part 4.
Man the enthusiasm you have brought with this trilogy is just amazing. I can't believe it's been almost 2 years. And a year since part 2. Thanks to you and the group that pulled it off
This whole series has just been a constant rumination of every single love I had growing up, from books to films to games to music. Literally.
This is your best part video yet & simply can be argued your Cyberpunk documentary is the best docu videos I have ever seen on CZcams. Congrats for this amazing works.
I don't think I've seen a more comprehensive game/genre doc on CZcams or literally ever. What a trip. Can't believe this is available for free on CZcams. Thanks you have a new sub for sure
Man, Dark City is such an incredible movie. I only saw it when I was much younger but it still lives on in my mind. Every once in a while I think about it again and it's just wonderful.
AND 13th Floor? Nice. Another killer pick. And yeah I can't ignore Gattaca , also amazing.
SNOW CRASH !!!! love that Stephenson is getting some of his due, despite the inanity of fb going Meta. i remember watching The Thirteenth Floor and Dark City in theatres and walking out of each one being gobsmacked. and then The Matrix came out lol.
also kudos for featuring a bunch of Canucks (not generally cyberpunk celebres), from Godfather Gibson himself, to Front Line Assembly on the music side, to Keanu and Carrie-Anne on the acting front, and Steve Skroce for the Matrix storyboards. also David Cronenberg and Bill Shatner ;)
Gibson is a Canuck convert, but I guess that still counts.
VRChat is closer to the metaverse than fb is, using the name or even getting more users (if they ever do) means little.
LOL I love how CZcams started it off with an ad for MTG that said
"I've been waiting for this day for so long"....
Long live Indigo Gaming!
That's hilarious! 😄
I don't think i have ever sat through 4 hours and 30 minutes of CZcams doc before, in one sitting and without a break... Very well done indeed!
Glad you enjoyed so much! Thanks!
These are absolutely amazing! My favorite part, so far--about 20 minutes into part 3-- is how each episode has been longer than the last 😅 Truly beautiful job to all involved!!
Just binged the three parts, very insightful for what used to be a niche genre.
Thank you for dedicating so much time to make the most detailed and enjoyable documentary possible.
Going to wait for the missus to go out, order a take away and get this party started! You, my man, are a legend. Thank you
This has been absolutely amazing. I had no idea just how much of recent culture was inspired by the cyberpunk theme overall. Aside from the amazing production and text - your voice's cadence, inflections, timbre and the high quality of the recording makes this series all the more...breathtaking. Thank you for doing this, it may be studied by our descendants sometime in the future :))
What a magnificent series. So much amazing stuff over the 3 episodes and we're only up to the year 2000! I can't wait for the next one. Thank you so much.
Let’s do this!!!!!
He kill each and every one of these. Can't stop watching every episode.
Started watching the episodes of this documentary in order to look for inspiration to improve my Cyberpunk 2020 campaign. Commenting to say that I thoroughly enjoy this series. Highly informative and easily digestible, with pristine editing. Godspeed, Indigo. Keep going strong and never fade away.
Snow Crash is one of my favorite literary pieces, and I adore far more… broken Cyberpunk worlds, like the manga Blame! or the first Matrix. I do and always will love the cyberpunk genre, in all forms.
Three parts in and I’m still bowled over by the staggering amount of work and research that goes into each episode. As always, my hats off to Indigo Gaming for this wonderful series. Anyone asks me why I love Cyberpunk, I’ll redirect them to this channel.
It's an amazing work.
👏👏👏
This is my favourite part yet! The hard work shows Indigo, you should be very proud.
Watching this, it's quite astounding to me how much Cyberpunk has influenced my life through the entertainment media I was introduced to growing up in the 90s, and later taking part in both the electronic music movement, experiencing the evolution of fps games, and being blown away when I saw The Matrix in the cinema for the firs time.
This series is among the best I've ever seen. The editing, sources, and narration of the genre's history rivals and even exceeds the bar set by more traditional, Big Media TV releases I remember.
I rewatch this series like therapy. I can't wait for the next part. I want to see all the cyberpunk gems I missed within the 2000s and 2010s.
OMG, it's out!
Thank you Indigo, you just made my day!
That was absolutely phenomenal. Definitely the definitive guide on Cyberpunk, it's influences, history and affect on modern day society. I'll be saving this one to my personals list to watch in 10 to 15 years from now to see how much closer we've come.
A seminal compilation of all things cyberpunk together with first class editing. A truly enjoyable series! Thanks for taking the time to make these ♥
So glad you included Strange Days in this series, such a great movie
Well there goes my saturday morning
Would you have a "definitive" list of movies that you'd recommend that are pivotal to the cyberpunk genre?
That is an interesting idea. I mean this series is a good start, but I don't honestly recommend every piece of media I cover here. For example, I covered New Rose Hotel because of Gibson, but it's a very frustrating watch.
@@Indigo_Gaming that’s true. I know I read neuromancer last year and it was tough with all the technobabble. Sometimes what was revolutionary at the time is just cliche now. It’s kind of the same with movies, but then you have the Matrix and Blade Runner. Which are both pivotal cyberpunk movies. So it’s really dependent on each movie.
@@OCinneide For me it helps to imagine the stories taking place in an alternative reality, where those anachronistic tech words are stand-ins for some actual technology we know about. It's easy to imagine the lingo or the tech itself developing differently.
I recommend Existenz. It's the only movie about questioning reality that ever made me feel the question. When you get to the end there's a good chance that you will experience an unnerving feeling unlike any other.
Apart from the two aforementioned masterpieces, I remember (but it's been a looong time!) Akira as having an absolutely fantastic narrative arc. Ghost In the Shell being great too, albeit more slow burning and somber. Absolutely loved Verhoeven's visual tone and atmosphere in both Total Recall (always loved this one) and Robocop. I'd gladly watch the Running Man again at some point, not sure how it holds up though.
I've seen your Cyberpunk documentaries several times now. Amazing work!
I'm glad they're so rewatchable! Thanks.
Absolutely unreal. I've now watched all 3 parts (parts 1 and 2 twice!) and I was blown away by this series and can't wait for more content.
I'm so glad you enjoyed my work! These are massive projects to work on mostly solo, so I can't promise Part 4 will be out anytime soon, but it will release eventually.
@@Indigo_Gaming your work is inspiring and worth the wait!
ooooooh yeaaah
thanks a lot for this longtime coming video
This channel is criminally underrated.
Man, I must have rewatched all parts of this series over 20 times. This is literally my most favorite thing on all of CZcams.
While it bums me out that Part 4 won't be coming out this year, and with the looming issue of the longer it's delayed, the more mention-worthy cyberpunk stuff comes out and makes the prospective length of the series longer (Cyberpunk 2077 and Edgerunners, Midjourney and the AI art scene, Zucc's Metaverse, Saudi Arabia's The Line, etc.), I would still like to express you to take your time with this project.
While it is indeed disappointing that the viewership count of the three parts have declined rather dramatically, and work on the series being extremely time-consuming, please know that there are hundreds of thousands of us who will always tune into Part 4 no matter when it is released.
I know some people are disappointed, but it wouldn't be fair to myself or my audience to work on the next part until I'm passionate about it. These three episodes took a lot out of me, but I'm not concerned about more "cyberpunk" coming out and lengthening the runtime. My original plan was to cover up through 2020, with maybe a footnote here or there. History is a lot clearer when you aren't currently living it, so making some grand statements about Mark Z's metaverse or NFTs are almost certainly going to be very dated in a few years.
@@Indigo_Gaming That's great to hear. Either way, keep up the fantastic work. I'm gonna go rewatch all three all over again lmao
I absolutely love this video essay series so much!!
The tone, substance, vision, visuals, nuances both big & small, the history & growth of perhaps the greatest genre of all time, the level of detail throughout parts

Honestly without doubt, deserving of an award in my opinion.

Shame it was great 💔
This is one of the most amazing works i found on CZcams. There's SO much to unpack. The whole series is worth multiple rewatches. Thank you all that were part of this for this amazing piece of art, information and so much more. This has been an experience.
The production quality is so high on this one!
I'm super hyped for this one. I watched Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Running Man and Total Recall this week after seeing them featured in the previous videos. Let's goooooo!
Thank you for such an exceptional series on the topic: clearly a real labour of love. So many old favourites of mine on this series, and some real obscure classics too. You've earned an extra Patreon membership, as I also loved the videos on '30 Years of God Games' and 'Looking Glass Studios' you did a few years ago. Keep up the great work! :)
WOW WOW WOW WOWWWW!!!! Absolutely phenomenal!!! You are the kind of exceptionally masterful youtuber that we comb the platform hoping to find and then you blow us out of our shoes with the quality, depth and thoroughness of what you have produced!! I can't overstate just how incredibly impressive this series is... BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!!! 👏🤯 👏
