Easy, straight to the point. The best video on the topic one could watch.

Now I just want you to imagine that I get various configurations of procedural materials (water, fire, ice, wood, etc.), give them suggestive names, assign them a fake user, and then save the configuration. Now I can create any object and assign any procedural material to it with just one click.

I was only brought up to this video after losing my animation lol. You eloquently explained the subject! Thank you.

Top notch tutorial, I was glued to the screen the whole way through. It's unfortunate that this type of information doesn't get a lot of clicks.

Very useful info! I knew it saved data block but didn't understand the why to Blender defaulting to deleting unused it datablocks. Thanks for the explanation

    Excellent tutorial Brandon!
You have an awesome way of making complex subjects straightforward and easy to understand.
I didn't even think about setting up Fake Users to create a default Blender file that already contains the things you regularly use and need! That's awesome!
Thanks for all you do to help others learn 3D art and Blender. I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Valentine's Day and I hope you have a fantastic rest of your week! 😃

Nice tutorial. I've been wondering what the fake user button actually does. And it's actually really useful.

Thanks for another informative vid, Brandon. I had half an idea what the Fake User did but my mid-2012 Mac is so slow to render anything, I'm barely building materials and certainly not attempting full renders, animations, compositing etc. I just don't have the years to spare. 😁 But I will replace it sometime soon when Apple stop short-selling us with overclocked 5nm chipsets.

Really useful videos, thank you! I'm new to blender and, coming from a basic knowledge of Cinema 4D, i was wondering where blender save materials. In Cinema 4D you create materials inside a dedicated panel that contains all of them and then you can drag the materials you want onto the desidered mesh. Blender system confused me so much :D

How does this work with animations? I have a single rig and made an idle, run, and walk animation, but then suddenly the idle has a 0 in front of it. I've had to set it to fake user so as not lose it. But the idle animation works, it seems clearly assigned to the rig. I never unassigned it. How do you make it a "real" user?
