- Hungarian Count Alucard, a mysterious stranger, arrives in the U.S. invited by Katherine Caldwell, one of the daughters of New Orleans plantation owner Colonel Caldwell. Shortly after his arrival, the Colonel dies and leaves his wealth to his two daughters, with Claire receiving all the money and Katherine his estate "Dark Oaks." Katherine, a woman with a taste for the morbid, secretly begins dating Alucard and eventually marries him, shunning her long-time boyfriend Frank Stanley. Frank confronts the couple and tries to shoot Alucard but the bullets go right through the Count's body and hit Katherine, seemingly killing her.
A shocked Frank runs off to Professor Brewster, who visits Dark Oaks and is welcomed by Alucard and a living Katherine. The couple instruct him that henceforth they would be devoting their days to scientific research and only welcome visitors at night. Frank goes on to the police and confesses to the murder of Katherine. Brewster tries to convince the Sheriff that he saw Katherine alive and that she would be away all day, but the Sheriff insists on searching Dark Oaks. He finds Katherine's dead body and has her transferred to the morgue.
Meanwhile, Hungarian Professor Lazlo arrives at Brewster's house. Brewster has noticed that Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards and Lazlo suspects vampirism. A boy bitten and drained of blood confirms this suspicion. Later, the Count appears to Brewster and Lazlo but is driven away by a cross.
Vampiric Katherine enters Frank's cell and explains that she still loves him, that she married Alucard only to attain immortality, and that she wants to share said immortality with him. Frank is initially repulsed but then yields to her, as she advises him on how to destroy Alucard. Frank breaks out of prison, seeks out Alucard's hiding place and burns his coffin thereby destroying him. Brewster, Lazlo, and the Sherrif arrive at the scene, only finding Alucard's remains. They then go to Dark Oaks, where they find out that Frank has also set Katherine on fire, destroying her. - Zábava
I always found this one my favorite of the universial Dracula films. Much better then the original film (IMO of course). Wonderful atmosphere, great acting and just utterly chilling story!
Universal did America a bit of a service by putting out these monster movies. At the time, lots of Americans were trying to forget the real-life horrors of WWII. This movie is one of my faves. Mr. Chaney went from portraying Lenny in "Of Mice and Men" to the suave Count Dracula, which is great testimony to Chaney's talents as an actor. I also admired Lon Chaney Jr. as the doomed and tragic Lawrence Talbot in "The Wolfman." "The Wolfman" was very much like a Greek tragedy.
Love the cob web credits beginning--so typical of Universal class/camp. This movie is stylish, scary, atmospheric. Louis Albritton is superb with classy speaking voice, aura of mystery--the very definition of obsessed in a gold lame' dress (why didn't she make more movies?--I love her). What more could one want? So lets us all sit back with a big bowl of buttered pop corn and some Diet Dr. Pepper.
This is definitely one of the better ones. The story of Frank and Katherine has real depth and emotion. Louise Allbritton is great. Though I agree Chaney is miscast, he is still a good actor and tries hard. In the '60s, this was on TV a lot. Today I wonder how many young people know it. Thanks for posting. Happy Halloween.
I like the bayou location--different. All that Spanish moss, voodoo queens, murky swamps and plantation houses are very atmospheric!! Don't need a castle!
I remember watching these on the Saturday matinee on Saturdays on our ABC affiliate back in 76

The only actor ever to play on screen Dracula, The Wolf Man, the Frankenstein Monster, and the Mummy. I am sorry he never got to play his father's most famous screen role, the Phantom of the Opera. While we are mentioning underrated actors, let us not forget Vincent Price--the words "decadent" and "wealthy corruption" come to mind with him.
Son Of Dracula is a very good movie ( although it has a number of flaws in it) and a very underrated film. Although Lon Chaney Jr. was miscast as Dracula since he understandably lacked a European background and, therefore, could not portray Dracula in an aristocratic manner as Bela Lugosi did, Chaney Jr. portrayed the physical strength of Dracula better than Lugosi could, although Lugosi is still the best Dracula in movie history. An example of one of the flaws in the film is that the movie screenplay does not explain how Dracula comes back into existence after his daughter in the movie Dracula's Daughter destroyed Dracula'a body. The movie screenplay does not make it clear whether or not Count Alucard is actually Dracula or Dracula's son.
Thanks for posting this!
I love that dress she's wearing at 2:38!
I love the bit where the old woman tells her that she is going to marry a corpse. That means that she's either going to marry Keith Richards or Pete Doherty.
You've got to understand that at the time this was filmed this was the best they could do which is not bad at all....I enjoyed this movie and at the time this was not known as a horror movie and I believe all the universal monster movies were all put in one category...melodrama, if I remember correctly...
I absolutely love this movie, but they made one glaring mistake in it. In the scene where Count Alucard materilizes in the house on the second floor, there is a mirror on the wall which catches his image in it. Remember, vampires cast no reflection in a mirror.
Alucard is in the coffin, trying very hard not to laugh when these guys say he's not there. lols
1943. Only 12 years after the Bela Lugosi Dracula film.
@tomkes100 Yes! Lets also add Ms. Albritton--one of the finest portrayals on the horror screen.
@skylur44
Lon Chaney never got his due by most film students, buffs, and historians; my only quibble is with the premise--hard to think Count Dracula could be outwitted like that.
I was able to get thru parts 1-4, but part 5 is blocked from loading, even after I unblocked all the parts on the playlist.
Far better the Dracula 1931... =)
Gee, why didn't I think of that?????
I think Chaney was miscast here. I would have preferred this movie as a direct sequel to the original Dracula, as opposed to focusing on his supposed son.
AVGN brought me here.
Get some of the other boys to help you? hahahahahahahahahahahaha
