    This was a very smart move on Bear's behalf. You are a well respected traditional archer and you will be saying a lot of good things about Bear archery and their bows. I believe good word-of-mouth is the best advertising. The Grizzly's are great bows! Nice shooting Jeff!

    Lookin at this bow to be an upgrade from my last. Something about bear has always attracted me, and the wood and finish is just so beautiful. I love your humbleness and the fact you don't edit out a few misses or imperfections here and there because it reminds me that even the best might flub a string or two. Thanks for the quality channel. Cheers!

    Great shout out to Bear! I'm officially in the hunt for my first recurve and the Bear Grizzly is #1 on my list. It's been recommended that I look for a longer bow as I'm 6'1" with a 29" draw, but after seeing yours in action, and you looking like a tall guy and you mentioned somewhere in the comments that your DL is 29 1/2", I feel a lot better about going with this model. It looks like something right up my alley and really appreciate you putting it on display like this. Look forward to studying more of your videos. Thanks!

    I love my 50# old Grizzly. I have shot probably close to 30,000 arrows through it since July 2013. Was told by a Bear rep that it is from the 1960's.I hope it never breaks. I also own an old Bear Tigercat 45# recurve which shoots incredible also. I am seriously leaning toward a Bear Montana to have a longbow in my arsenal after watching your review of it and you and your kid shooting it.

  • @JeffKavanagh
    @JeffKavanagh  Před 11 lety

    Hi Wyatt
    Generally speaking a longbow is comsidered to be a more forgiving bow to shoot than a recurve and thus a better bow to start off with for someone new in getting into shooting with traditional equipment. It's the limb design primarily for that reason. The limbs on alongbow a more narrow but they are ticker and won't twist if drawn poorly with a poor release so the shot will stay truer. Also the longer the bow, the less pinch on the fingers for also a smooter release.

  • @JeffKavanagh
    @JeffKavanagh  Před 11 lety

    Hi James
    I haven't shot a Cheyenne yet but my first instinct is that if you are just getting into shooting with traditional bows like recurves or longbows, I'd go with the longer bow. 55" is a fairly short bow and shorter bows tend to be more difficult to handle for someone starting out.
    I like the Grizzlies but like I mentioned, I really haven't had a chance to shoot the Cheyenne yet.
    Cheers
    Jeff

    Hey Jeff! Love your videos. I have about a 30 1/2" draw. Would you recommend this bow? I'm also newer to shooting and was wondering what draw weight I should go with. I've been learning on a 30lb bow at 28" I want to get a bow that I can grow into and was wondering if jumping to to a 50lb would be too big of a leap.

  • @JeffKavanagh
    @JeffKavanagh  Před 11 lety

    I think 40lbs is a great weight to start with if you have been shooting a compound at 70lbs. To many people make a huge mistake of over bowing themselves when they go from a compound to a recurve or longbow. 40lbs is fine for deer too. I am 6'3" and my draw length is 29". You will likely find that your draw length will shorten slightly going to traditional because of the different way they are shot from each other. 58" is still a very managable length to learn with. You will like the Grizzly.

    @jasonknight3115 Před 11 lety

    Hi, was very impressed with your skill. You're video helped me choose the grizzly recurve for myself (50lb 58in). I also noticed that you seem to have a crapload of arrows, and good knowledge about arrows. What I was wondering was, if you could give some advice on where to get relatively inexpensive target shooting arrow? Good hunting arrows are freakin expensive. Thanks.

  • @JeffKavanagh
    @JeffKavanagh  Před 11 lety

    Yes you will want feather fletching and shoot right off the shelf and bear hair rest that comes with the bow. Rubber fletching will distort the way the arrow flies from the bow as well as damage the rest.

  • @GeoffreyEduard
    @GeoffreyEduard Před 9 lety +1

    Hey Jeff, again a great video.
    Can you set it up with a Dynaflight 97 string? And what string are you using?
    Bear Archery's website doesn't specify that on this particular model. Although it's specified with other models... I am actually thinking of moving on from my 40 pound Samick Takedown Hunter to a 50 pound one piece bow. In my research the Grizzly seems like a great value for money. I looks like it's one of the cheaper bows of the leading manufacturers. Would you recommend it? It would definitely be used for hunting and lot's of backyard fun.
    Thanks you for the help. Keep up the great vids

    Hi Boris
    The Spuer Grizzly may be a bit faster, still, your shooting 60lbs and that will launch yoru arrows plenty fast. My personal preference is with the Grizzly for what you have already commented on. I like the looks and if you like the look of a bow, "if it speaks to you" , you will shoot it well. Also the two handles are different. The Super Grizzly is much blockier and heavier. I like the refined feel of the Grizzly better. It all comes down to personal choice. They all shoot well.

  • @JeffKavanagh
    @JeffKavanagh  Před 11 lety

    Still Wyatt I am a fan fo both bows. Personally I like the pistol grip on a recurve over the straight grip on a longbow. It's what it does to the posiyion of your bow arm wrist. Yoru bow arm is straighter with the grip on a recurve.
    Either way, if you get a recurve, get a longer one if you can. The longer the bow the more forgiving it is to shoot. Star of with a bow in the 35lb weight and work on form first. I did a video on release. Check it out as it might help as well. Cheers and have fun!

  • @ShePlaysOutside
    @ShePlaysOutside Před 10 lety

    Hey Jeff Happy new year to you and your family. My comments about the problems I have been having with my new 45 lb bear grizzly seem to have been deleted. You asked about what arrows I am using . The arrows that I am using are Gold tip traditional hunters and the spine is 3555/500. I have used tips from .75 to 1.25 and the other day I tried a 1.45 which now makes the bare shaft arrow fly strait on the horizontal but on the vertical plain the arrow flies into the target at a 35 degree angle. This tells me that I need to bring the nock point down. If I bring the nock point down the bare shaft hits the shelf and if I leave it the same the fletched arrow kicks up because the fletching's hit the shelf. I have tried brace heights from 7.0 to 8.5 the lower brace height is quite noisy and is only marginally better at 8.5 . The arrow nocks have been sanded so that they will hang from the string under their own weight but if I tap on the string with my hand they release. I tried another bow to see if the problem was my form or release and the arrows bare shaft or fletched will hit the target equally and accurately. I have been reading up on bow tiller and
    the article I read was that if the tiller is off that I wont find a nock height that will work. Jeff does this make sense to you ? I measured the distance from my top riser to the string and I get 7.75 inches when I measure the bottom I get 7.25 . This shows that I have a Positive tiller of 1/2 an inch. Do you think this is normal for the grizzly? Also over the Christmas holidays I built a tiller tree to see how much my top limb bends compared to my bottom limb and found that at a 28 inch draw the top limb bends a little over 1inch more than the bottom limb when pulled at the nock point that is set at .5 inch above the shelf. If I pull the string at the center of the bow which is 2 inches below the nock point the limbs bend equally does this sound normal or do you think if I did this right that the tiller could be out? Again thanks so much for your help and all your video teachings.

    • @JeffKavanagh
      @JeffKavanagh  Před 10 lety +1

      Hi Wes
      I honestly have no idea about the tiller on the bow. I am definitely not a technician or tinkerer that way. It usually takes me about ten minutes to get a bow set up. Sometimes I have to mess with some different types of arrows but to be honest I have never experienced the kind of difficulty you are having right now. What I will do tomorrow though is I will measure my brace height, nock point, and distances from the fadeouts and let you know how mine is set up. One thing I had to change with my new grizzly as compared to my old is I went to the 2114 Easton aluminums. The 5575 gold tips I was using on my old one ended up being too stiff and too light. Keep in mind that it is a 55lb bow as well.
      My Kodiak 55lb bow I shoot 2216's out of. A very different arrow set-up.
      I am not a fan of carbons for anything other than wing shooting. I find them too light.
      What distances are you do the bst at?
      The limbs should not bend equally.
      I will take those measurements for you and get back to you tomorrow. Something doesn't sound right and I will see what I can do here to help you out.
      Jeff

    I have a question about brace height on a grizzly. My new Grizzly came with a brace height of only 6-6.5 inches. It actually took quite a bit of twisting in order to bring the bow to a little under 7.5 inches (the low ideal posted for the Grizzly). Does running a bow at a low brace height affect the flight of the arrow? Should I be concerned about continuing to twist the Flemish string until I get the manufacturer's recommended brace height? It seems like it's taken quite a bit to get it to 7.3

    Jeff, I just got my first kill with a recurve! A little wanna be 3 point mule deer. Thanks for all your help! Now I am interested in getting another bow. I want a bear (I wonder who gave me that idea). Soo if you could only have one bear recurve about 50-60# what would it be? Main concerns: manuverability (a hunting bow); forgiving for smooth shooting; durability and price. I'm leaning toward the bear grizzly since you love it and it is about my price range, I also like the simple yet handsome looks of it. Hope you don't mind sharing again from your endless wisdom. The old Kodiak Hunters are fairly good bows too. Some people can't stand the grip, others love them.
      I shoot a KH but bought a takedown, need a bow with some muscle. Think 65# will fix that.
      I would not buy the Grizzlies they make now. They just scream cheep to me. They only have one wood lamination for the limb and Bear has never made them like that before. But other than that; they look like good bows.

    Hey Jeff! Great shooting, Bear is a awesome company. Purchasing my first Recurve or Longbow after shooting compound bows. My DL is 30" and im 6'2.5, i would pull 70lbs with my compound easy
    Would the Bear Grizzly @ 40# be a great bow for me? Hunting and target practice. I know its 58" AMO, is that too short for me? I really like that bow
    Thanks Sir

    Hi Jeff, awesome shooting. I aspire to do as well as you. I just bought the Bear Grizzly 50#. I see you are using Easton 2114 you state,any changes since your last post? I need to purchase arrows, what would you recommend?

    • @JeffKavanagh
      @JeffKavanagh  Před 10 lety

      So much depends on the situation and it really is hard for me to recommend a specific arrow. For example, for this bow (55lbs) I am shooting 2114's out of it. For my 55lb Kodiak I am shooting 2216's. The 2114's don't fly well out of the Kodiak at all. Trial and error and finding what works can take some time sometimes.

    Hi from Russia, Jeff! Never have seen such a hell of an archer! Wanted to ask, I'm hasitating between Grizzly 60# and Super Grizzly 60#. Bear archery says SuperGrizzly is faster due to additional fascor layer and fastflight string compatible. But visually I like Grizzly much more (Dark brown profile with black laminating looks amazing!) Can you kindly give me an advice which one is better to buy regardless the price?Do I realy get much advantage from SuperGrizzly due to fascor and FF string?

    Hi Jeff, you think that the grizzly is a good bow for me, I have shot with a recurve for a while, and now wanted a bow that could grow and maybe hunt with him when I was ready. I read some reviews about the grizzly and looks a good bow although some people have had problems with cracks in the limbs. what you think of this bow to me, I want an opinion from someone with espirience in bows.

      I do not have a grizzly but from my experience with bear archery, I shoot the Kodiak and super Kodiak as well as the Martin equivance 62" hunter, you can not go wrong with it. The one prevalent complain is the hand shock. For some ppl it is a make or break type of deal since they prefer comfortability. This can be fixed with a custom piece of leather wrap around the handle for me. I also wear thin glove on my bow hand so that should help.

    Hi Jeff Thanks so much for posting all the great video's. After watching your review of the Grizzly I bought a 45 lb. one. It showed up a few days ago and have been trying to tune it. Every time the arrow leaves the shelf it makes a loud clunk. I have tried brace heights from 7.5 up to 8.75. seems a bit quieter the higher up I go but still quite noisy. I notice when a fletched arrow leaves the shelf the back of it kicks up and then comes back down. If I shoot a bare shaft out of it the arrow hits the target at a 35 to 45 degree angle tip down. I have tried moving the nock point from ranges of 0 up to .75 of an inch and it still flies at a angle. If you have any advice on how to get it to shoot strait I sure would appreciate it.
    Thanks and Merry Christmas
    Wes

      Hi Wes
      I will measure what my brace height is at and where my nock is at and let you know. What kind of arrows are you shooting from it. I shoot Easton 2114's out of mine. I might even go to an even heavier arrow for it. I am using three 5" helical. Also if your nock on your arrow is too tight it can cause a problem as well. I will let you know where my set-up is at. Jeff

      Jeff Kavanagh
      Hey Jeff thanks for the reply. this is a real head scratcher for me. I am no expert but I have been reading a lot on the subject. I think the tiller of the bow might be off, I hesitate to say it as I haven't herd anyone have any problems with there bows. I'll tell you what I know and what I've done and tried. Current brace height is 8.5 inches . Nock point shoots best at .5" above shelf any higher and the bare shaft fly's in at an 25 to 35 degree angle tip down any lower and shaft hits the shelf. unfortunately if I put a fletched arrow on with this set up the fletching closest to the shelf hits and kicks the rear of the arrow up . With this set up my fletched and bare shaft arrows match well on the target but it is very sensitive to any mistakes and my lower fletching is getting frayed . Now with my bow strung and bow square attached I measured the point where the Dymondwood riser tapers to the point where it meets the limbs the upper measurement was 7.75" and the lower was 7.25". Since I messaged you last I built a Tillering tree in my basement. If I pull the bow down to 28 inches. The top limb is bent down 1 inch more than the bottom limb. The hunting store where I bought the bow doesn't have a lot of arrow selection so I have been using the two types that they have. The arrow that I have been tuning the most is a 30" 35/55,500 spine Gold tip traditional hunter with three 4 inch long fletching's mounted strait to shaft. The field point weights that work best are 145 grain points. I have sanded all the nocks so that they will stay on under their own weight but if you give them a tap they will fall off. I have also tried some Easton carbon ion 600 spine cut at 30" and have used .75,1.0 and 1.25 grain field points these arrows are really noisy and when bare shaft testing have actually showed them to be too heavy a spine as they were also hitting tip down and to the left. I'm sure they aren't to heavy but that's just how they showed when they hit the target. Lastly I tried a 400 spine carbon arrow(I'm not sure what brand it was as I tried it at a hunting store in there ware house) it was cut to 30" with a 145 grain field point and it hit the target on the vertical good but the tip was to the left at a 35 degree angle showing to stiff a spine. One other thing I wanted to eliminate is if I was causing the arrows to shoot poorly. So I tried a 40 lb Ben Pearson recurve bow. I shot bare shaft and fletched arrows and they shoot strait without any kick up or harsh angles into target. Sorry for the long message Jeff but I figure more info the better chance you might have an idea how I can get my bow to shoot right.
      Thanks again Jeff
      Wes

    • @JeffKavanagh
      @JeffKavanagh  Před 9 lety

      I'd get either the 7 arrow "Fred Bear" quiver made by Bear or the 4 arrow "Fred Bear" quiver sold through Three Rivers. I have both and they work great. Very solid and they are set up and adjustable for the bushings on your bow. If you want to see it I have the 4 arrow quiver on my takedown in the takedown review I did.

    What is the brace height and string length that is on your bow? I bought a Grizzley this summer and the string is 56" and the brace height is only 6 1/4". Five inch fletching will not fit. I think the string that came with it is too short.

    • @JeffKavanagh
      @JeffKavanagh  Před 10 lety

      The brace height is at 7 5/8 on mine. I would have to go an measure my string length but right off the bat I would say your brace height is too short. You need to twist your string shorter.

    • @Sideshowbobx
      @Sideshowbobx Před 9 lety

      Did you solved the issue? IIRC I make the strings for my Grizzly 55" long and need to twist it a little, so 56" sounds way too long to me to reduce the string by twisting it in. Any update?

      The Super Grizzly limbs are reinforced for use with modern Fast Flight bow strings. The regular Grizzly you must use old skool Dacron bow string. Not a big deal. I just ordered a regular Grizzly.
