Have great memories of touring Europe in one of these with two of my mates in my student days (1988). I have still never been in a more comfortable car. It was perfect for the thousands of miles we covered to some countries that do not exist anymore. Great memories.
The hydropneumatic suspension system was first introduced by Citroen in 1954 on the Traction Avante, but only on the rear wheels. Full implementation, on all four wheels, occurred the following year with the DS. As far as I know, the SM was the first to employ the self-centering steering, which was 1970, but the hydro suspension came out 16 years before.
Judging by the sound of your suspension, I think you need to have your spheres checked (re-pressurized). The car shouldn't be 'clunking' with every bump.
I have a 1982 Series One Familiale, possibly the only one still on the road in Australia, with eight person seating capacity, and I love it. You can pretty much ignore speed bumps - it just glides over them like a boat! It was a special import from the UK, as the Familiale was never brought into the country through the dealerships, so I'm told.
Thanks for posting the video, they are a very special car.

Will do - thanks Ivan.
When I was a child in the English West Midlands during the 1970s all the local men who worked as lorry drivers for the factories used to own these.
Diesel cars were a relative rarity around here back then and I've been told that these guys used to either fill up in their yard at work or syphon the lorry tank to stick a bit of juice in their Citroëns.
Things like this were less governed then.
I love your nerdiness about this! I get exactly what you mean about the quirky look. I am simultaneously revolted and fascinated by Citroens and other very European looking cars. Kitschy cool indeed!
This car is ahead of its time just like Citroen DS and Citroen Tracion Avant from 1935. Love Citroens and Renaults.
Beautiful car, thanks for sharing
Also at 4:02, the gauge is not temperature, but an oil level and pressure gauge that comes on at start-up only. The engine temp gauge is digital in the center display below the windshield. The round analog temp gauge on the black plexi is an add-on, since most people can't get the digital displays repaired after they warp over time. There is no outdoor temp on this model on the display as it would be the right-most location that is blanked out. The 96 degrees showing is the engine temperature, which seems to work since 96C is about 205F.
Love these cars, drive mine in the US 2-3 times a week to work. Enjoy yours!
Thanks for your expertise Lionel!

Every time I see the interior of a CX or any other Citroën from that period, I think of Star Trek.
I saw one of these rusting somewhere in my city, was very courious about it because of the shape. Also,it was in the lowest position,it looked really cool! Beautiful body
Thx for an entertaining review of the Citroên CX Break. Enjoyed it very much.
Awesome glad I found this channel last night
Thanks for watching!!!! Drivin' Ivan
Good video but the hydropnuematic started on and the president of France was shot in was the Ds. Full Hydropnuematic suspension was on the following Citroëns, DS SM GS GSA CX BX XZANTIA XM C5 C6
Thanks for your precise assessment of French design, great car and video.
good review!
Counting this, our CX, and 1 other around leesburg. That makes 3 in Virginia I know of. Mine is a 88' CXA 25 Prestige GAS- Auto. We have had it about 1 year now. The biggest thing about these cars, is the condition of all the rubber vacuum pipes around the engine. It is a sea of plumbing...
Also the plastic intake manifolds are known to split in half..... That temp gauge in the dash should come on at 50C. I always wait to until it comes on.
A few fun facts : The pulleys are driven off the rear of the engine. If/ when you change the belts- do not go by any online resources you find. They are all wrong....
If ever an issue arises where the car shuts off, runs weird etc, it is often due to the wiring connectors coming apart, in the engine bay. When using the factory jack, be absolutely sure you are on level ground-or the car can roll away! Since yours is the wagon, and mine is the prestige the rear brakes are known to get stucked. It has been known that the injection computer connector can pop apart (which is located up near the passenger foot well). Also, the fuel pump wires can get broken over time-getting in and out of the car on the passenger side.
This comes from not having any, or enough extra weight on the rear- so every now and then make sure you carry something heavy to make them work right.
Does yours have front and rear A/C? One can easily get a tire to squeal on these while turning- its kinda funny to hear it while making a sharp turns at low speeds in a parking lot.
Also, that block off plate on the dash covers up some almost useless pockets. Besides the change holder spot, I keep a little stuffed French mouse in the other one.
MY dad had one of them back in the 70s, it was like a funeral car!.....I loved it because can play football at the back of it!
The funny thing is that Citroen released it in 1982...
Amazing !
I love this Car and my dad has a break from '91
Driving it is just amazing
Everybody looks at you like youre driving a ferrari, but the people are all smiling and saying its a beautiful Car (yeah some say its a funeral car especially cause my dads is darkgrey)
I wish you a lot of good times with this beauty, keep it and treat it good
You are so wrong about 'Suspension settings'! There are only 2 settings for driving, in fact there are 4 settings. The lowest is the resting position when the oil has passed through the pistons, and it will return to this setting. It is also a setting to be used when the car is jacked up, then you can set it in the lowest position, and it will then automatically lift your wheel up. Setting no 2 is for normal driving, and should be used on tarmac roads. When driving on roads that is normal made with tarmac, the setting no. 3 can be used. This setting will lift the rear of the car about 10 cm, and the front about 5 cm, and this is still letting it place for some suspension travel. In the highest setting the car is not supposed to be driving in, as the suspension trailing arms are pressed out to the rubber stop blocks, letting there be no movement left. If you are driving in this position you will for shure damage the car, as it will flex the body itself and you might also destroy the joints in the drive shafts. Saying this, as I have actually had 2 CX's, the first was a CX 2000 Pallas from 1974, and the next was a CX 2500 25RD Familiale from 1986. They where both lovely cars, and in there time the where unbeatable by their design and usability, but todays car have out run them. Only their design are still future like in some ways. You can truly say they where ahead of with their design.
Hi. Just discovered your channel. I have a late 89 CX Turbo 2 fitted with a Maikonics power kit. Had it since 92. If you ever get the chance to drive one, grab the chance. 250 bhp rocket ship. Citroen are so cool. Looking for a good used C6 now. And you like the late XJ's, you have taste, my man!
Superb video Subbed for more of your video,s
Lovin the wheeled salmon and your enthusiasm :)

Same suspension but it was the DS which De Gaulle was travelling in.
You have a laterl model cx.
Try to get a look at an earlier one , they have a different and very French instrument panel.
The Speedo and rev counter are actually a drum which moves behind a fixed line , quite odd !
I learned a lot from having more than a few issues with the cx I owned!
Take for example the full engine removal needed after main bearings failed......
Failing to de-pressureise the hydraulic system and trying to remove a sphere results in valves trying to obtain orbit whilst covering oneself with green fluid!
The '66 Toronado has the same style speedo.
Fab, I so love Citroens
I love huge citroens, they are avant-garde.

Hi Ivan, that was a really good review, lots of nice pictures & interesting chat, I appreciate your Cx-thusiasm ;-). One additional point was the, as Citroen called it, Wheel at each corner design, this gave even better handling, as it didn't have lots of car behind the rear axle as many big station wagons and being Fwd this gives a great load space, also Citroen said it was one of the only station wagons you could drive on snow with confidence (tyre dependant of course). I know your interior is a little rough now, but the interior design is still modern & unusual today, unfortunately, they are now getting old & somewhat tired with wear, also the estates left the factory looking grey & boring on the inside - so - the only option is to fully refurbish them and that's what I've nearly finished doing!! It's taken over 4 years to restore my 1987 Safari, 30 years old this month, and she's gonna look amazing, there's new everything ;-) You can see the paint job done about 8 months ago on my channel second video from the top. I hope you get to spend a bit on your Cx and modernise her a little, she's worth it. The rear window is unusual, it's smaller, I wonder what happened there? Good luck keeping her on the road & don't forget to keep the spheres fresh. Best Justin (uk)
Thanks for watching and commenting! It's a really cool car, and fun to own! Please share my videos! Drivin' Ivan
Hey Ivan, will do - for some reason, my entire comment didn't get posted properly, I've re-posted it in full ;-)
Does that external temperature gauge read 9.6C or 96C? If the latter, it's broken, or you're in trouble! Great video!
Ya the air suspension was originally design for wagon needs. That third row ha. Looking for used BMW wagon now which have rear bags. Love the Citroen hope it does well for you!
Unique car and interesting movie 👍😊
This one looks very cool. The French president was 'saved' by a DS not a CX and I don't think it should sound like a squeaky old shopping trolley, but otherwise brilliant. (PS The fancy steering was a separate system to the suspension).
From how a person cares, especially internally, one understands the degree of personal hygiene
The snowflake switches are for the air conditioning compressor as far as I know.
Great car that has seen better days..I would have to throw away the fan, front hub caps and repaint it in some colour other than pink....
I saw this model in the Champs Elysee showroom in Paris when it had just come out. Still have the original brochure. The car looked futuristic then and it still does today, in my opinion. You are lucky to have one of the very few imported (rather unsuccessfully, it seems) into the US.

mexicanfrusciante hi
Nice! Is that the one that was for sale in California, or in Florida? Some clarification from a long-time CX owner
The arm rest is a non OEM add-on, they never came with those.
At the 3:40 mark, the two buttons with the snow flakes are to turn on the AC. Single snow flake: outside air, dual snowflakes: recirculate inside air. It just happens that turning on the AC also adds 200 RMP to the engine at idle and kicks the two radiator fans on high speed.
Thanks again for your expertise! I noticed the engine fan coming on when I flicked those buttons! Good to have clarification from an expert! Drivin' Ivan
Hi Ivan I would like to buy one too where to look for one and how much you paid for yours please let me know
Hydropneumatic Citroens are a dirty pleasure of mine - my first lottery purchase would be an SM, but without that lottery win I could quite easily find myself with a GS, CX, C5 or C6. Never been a fan of the BX, XM or Xantia though...
Love it can I buy it from u
Citroën never make money with 7, 11 and 15 Ch traction avant, never with DS et never with CX. If Citroën want make money never build this cars. Make marketing car only and citroën would be dead now. Today exist only marketing car. This the end of time of true cars. Today only money is important. The car to be only marketing car not ingenering cars. This the time of money only not time of industrie.
very entertaining

I'm watching this for the Citroen love. Sorry, I meant the Citrowing. ;)
Gotta love quirky cars, and Citroens are some of the best! Thanks for watching and commenting, and please share my videos with your friends and family and on social media and of course Subscribe! Drivin' Ivan
I may be wrong but I think the DS was the one that saved the French president's life
You are correct AP. But the hydro-pneumatic systems are quite similar! Here is the complete story from History:
"In August 1962, a group called the OAS (Secret Army Organization in
English) plotted an assassination attempt on President De Gaulle, who
they believed had betrayed France by giving up Algeria (in northern
Africa) to Algerian nationalists. Near dusk on August 22, 1962, De
Gaulle and his wife were riding from the Elysee Palace to Orly Airport.
As his black Citroen DS sped along the Avenue de la Liberation in Paris
at 70 miles per hour, 12 OAS gunmen opened fire on the car. A hail of
140 bullets, most of them coming from behind, killed two of the
president’s motorcycle bodyguards, shattered the car’s rear window and
punctured all four of its tires. Though the Citroen went into a
front-wheel skid, De Gaulle’s chauffeur was able to accelerate out of
the skid and drive to safety, all thanks to the car’s superior
suspension system. De Gaulle and his wife kept their heads down and cameout unharmed."
drivinivankatz great video btw, this is such a cool car and the suspension, styling, and overall coolness was candy to my eyes
MUST...HAVE...THAT...COLOR!
but why the monsieur is it pink
would you be interested in selling this ?
That’s not Pink 🚥it’s CORAL‼️👩🏼🎤
And that wagon looks like a hearse‼️👻
But yas the original Honda Insight fender skirts were iconic af 🆒
How much is this worth ??
Hanzala guy in Europe 5-8000€ for a descent one of course it depends on the condition and if you find a diehard Citroen that is willing to pay this much money
Not a car guy huh...the switches to turn the engine fan on and off are aircon....but I guess you knew that 😜
probably should be Canadian
it was the Elegant version, Now it's the Dna version......................
Looks like a hearse.
Ils sont moche les enjoliveurs avant :(
Bloody ads
dont find it cool at all...(the pinkish colour ) ..no car deserves this :-)
Ivan: You must do your best to reduce your use of clicheed words. You used "cool" ten times in the first 4 minutes. I love Citroens, but the hackneyed commentary got in the way!
