  • A customer asked us to make Platinum prints over color pigment. We printed the ConeColor pigment inks onto uncoated Revere platinum paper using an Epson SureColor P9000 as if it were a CMYOG printer by producing a CMYOG printer driver. The Epson is normally used with an RGB printer driver. There are specialty RIPs that can use independent channels. But, we like to write our own because it allows us to redesign it from project to project. This way we can handle technical issues like ink load and ink bleed to our satisfaction. We color managed this project. We printed a color ICC profile target through our custom printer driver. No black ink was used. Then we coated the printed target with Malde-Ware Platinum/Palladium in a mixture of 50/50 and exposed/developed the "unprinted" black portion of our CMYOG(K) to make a color ICC profile for CMYOG & K (platinum/palladium).
In between the making of the custom Color ICC profile, we used Piezography® PiezoDN digital negative system to linearize the Malde-Ware Platinum-Palladium chemistry. The ICC profile influenced the making of the digital negative for the Platinum-Palladium. The digital negative influenced the making of the ICC profile. The platinum/palladium became the luminosity of the finished color print.
Malde-Ware chemistry is ammonium based allowing it to solubilize considerable more platinum and palladium than other printing out processes. This means we need to use much less coating to achieve dMax. There is a lot of surfactant in inkjet ink and the color-pigment-printed paper drank the expensive noble metals sensitizer. The video is of the first and second prints we attempted with this new process. Our results were "bang" on!

Very exciting to see such an established studio stretching to encompass more and more ways to express photographic printmaking.

"Platinum prints over color pigment" = what about the longevity of the print? Thank you (o_o)
