Like how original and hard mode are included. But miss how the bubble at the end of the level kind of swung and more slowly brought you into the new level. The new way just seems to rush it. Good on the old music being retuned in.
Speaking of revamped games...Do y'all remember Adventures of LOLO on the NES? Wouldn't that be a fun one to see get a makeover and brought to the switch! Man just thinking about it makes me wanna play the old ones! lol
I remember playing the original in the arcade and when I heard about this being released I was really looking forward to it. But then I saw the price which stopped me from getting it on day one, which I thought was overpriced and now seeing your review I am pleased to wait for a sale. Thanks guys
I think they dropped the ball with the visuals...They look half a**ed, the art direction is unappealing and the animations look a little too clunky. I prefer the look of the Arcade original or Bubble Bobble Symphony on Saturn.
On the NES you could unlock secret levels if you went through a timed door and beat the boss (and beat the boss with both characters present) Would be interesting to know if they are present in this version.
What a great and most importantly accurate review. Even though I love the game I couldn’t agree more with the terrible value score. It’s way overpriced for what we get.
after hollow knight I see pretty much every game as overpriced, it's not that helpful even the fact that they just released pokemon sword and shield days before... I think it could have been better by adding bubble symphony and memories together with the classic one, maybe by making them unlockable after finishing 4 friends in normal or something like that ... not the greatest comeback... still better than expected
This was one of my all-time favorite games growing up, my friends and I played this constantly. Although I’m not really digging this new game too much I do love they included the original in there.
This is on the Nintendo Shop sale right now at around £20 for the next 4 days; Just bought it and loving playing it! I remember playing the original in the arcade years back and it's great to have that now in my own home :)
A few years ago, I was somehow given Bubble Bobble: Old and New for the Game Boy Advance. From the game footage, it looks super easy and not as strategic as the original. After a price drop, I'd get this to play with my little brother. Thanks for the review!!!
The original was one of the best arcade games growing up as a kid. Also, with the arcade machine, you could put in a secret code with the joy stick and buttons! Miss these days
Ohh. Oh nooo. I just looked it up. They want $40 for this when it comes out in the US?? 40 fucking bucks?? Oh, HELL no. I love Bubble Bobble, but this is WAY overpriced. That is ridiculous. Well, there goes any hype I had for this.
They should of just remastered the old version and sold that. The old version had so much thought into each level design that it didn't need a "remake" but a remaster.
Shame about the price, but BB for me will always be about my 1st holiday abroad with my mate Ian. A drunken tour of northern Europe, Holland, Germany ending up at Arney's camp site (he was Norwegian) in this dank Danish camp site by a very cold sea. BB was a very expensive coin op there,(also the beer,) so maybe things haven't changed that much! My 2nd favourite arcade game- behind Chase HQ - but always a classic! Keep on gaming! Much love - dan x
I think I'm gonna get Whip! Whip! while I wait for this. It's finally on sale for only $3on the (NA at least) eshop. It features sound by COSIO from ZUNTATA! Zuntata is Taito Corporation's "house band".
I used to speed tons on the arcade of this when I went to the sea side in Cleethorpes, I also had parasol stars for the Gameboy which is kind of a sequel to rainbow island I think
I love this game. Can’t wait to get my copy of it. Production can’t be fast enough although strictly limited isn’t known for their quick delivery of products. I guess I’ll play it some time in March 2020. ;) edit: I had no idea the original game is included. That’s awesome. At least that game will give us a challenge. It’s been a long time since I’ve played the O.G. Bubble Bobble.
Seems like a fair review of a game I am so excited for. Not really understanding the complaint about the price though. I thought the series was always full priced? I sure remember paying $75 for the original way back when. I'm getting the Collectors Edition for $90 and I couldn't be happier. Happy gaming guys.
I suppose when you consider similar arcade games sell on the switch now for £6, £36 for a remaster seems pretty high. However, it’s great to hear you are looking forward to it my friend. Glen
Great review! I pre ordered this totally on the fact its the original publisher and the classic built in. Shame it doesnt get past a 'meh! Its ok!' It does look uninspired somewhat. Lets hope rainbow islands gets a refurbish , because that one is easily one of my fave games of all time.
Yeah, it’s just not challenging enough. You can breeze through 75% of the game without breaking a sweat. As you say, having the original thrown in, plus the hard mode makes up for this a bit. Completely agree on Rainbow Islands - that would be great! Glen
@@SwitchUpYt It's strange how the Bubble Bobble Arcade game isn't available through Hamster with the Arcade Archives series on Switch, and that you can only play it in Bubble Bobble 4 friends. Meanwhile, PS4/PS5 has it available through AA.
It's confirmed to have an update sometime this year with 50 new levels! So that's where the other 50 went! That's honestly what I expected! Also it's not the first four-player 3D graphics Bubble-Bobble. That goes to Bubble Bobble PLUS (Wii) and Neo (XBLA). It was 800 Wii Points and had the 100 original levels remade, 100 new ones and a hard mode for both with enemy variations. ALSO 2 200 point level packs containg 50 levels each. That's right, it was two dollars for the same amount of levels as the base Switch game. OUCH!
I think the Master System version might be my favourite as it has the extra items to collect, 200 levels, more secret doors (like on level 1 if you stay alive long enough) and more bosses than the arcade version.
Got hours of enjoyment out of this on the C64. Could just see my kids faces as I explain the game mechanics. Maybe a rainy day sale purchase. But it's going to have to be a deep cut
I really enjoy Bubble Bobble in short sessions and I'd absolutely play the 4 player mode with family. But not at this price. 36 quid for Bubble Bobble. This is insane!
Having the classic original game is Awesome...I would consider the main game being a nice bonus...it looks pretty decent but it’s very pricey...might pick this one up on sale😎👍
Does it have bonuses in game (not as boss prizes) like the Rods, Candies, Shoes, Potions etc? The beauty of this game was most given by them. I would by the Switch just to play this game if it was with the same features as the original.
Bubble Bobble NES was my favorite game as a child, I was really looking forward to this reboot (that apparently released here just before Animal Crossing, so I missed it!). Because of how easy it looks I will sadly pass for now, as it is still 40.00.
Yeah, was liking it and bringing back some memories... but that price!! It will have to be $20 or less for me to seriously consider it... maybe even more around $10.
I love Bubble Bobble and still play the original on my mame cab. This looks okay (although I prefer the original style of graphics, the new ones are a bit of cute overload) but the price. ouch
You cant find it cheaper than £37? Amazon are selling it for £31.80 and thegamecollection.net are selling it for £29.99, including postage. In fact all seem to be at most £35. Thats with me just googling and seeing the first few results. I do really like the look of it, dont care about challenge seeing that every god damn retro inspire game is going for balls hard. Its just nice to have games that you can just relax and play. I will wait until I can get it for 20 quid though.
I checked a couple of days ago when writing the review and it was £45 on Amazon, £39.99 on game collection and £37 on Base. Perhaps they were place holder prices but that’s what they were so that’s what I said. Glen
Any idea why this game hasn't came to the U.S. yet? I've been waiting patiently. I could swore this was coming over. I even ordered a physical copy from Strictly Limited but I haven't heard anything about it..
Bubble Bobble is a golden age great and deserved a more thoughtful reissue / reboot / cash in than this. Scores and percentages seem arbitrary and plucked out of thin air though (as they always have done throughout reviewdom)...
I played the classics on PC when I was a kid and enjoyed them a lot, but this price is completely unreasonable (tbh anything over 10€ seems too much for a game like this nowadays)
thank you for your sincere and kind review. Personally, I wanted to play this game since this old-fashioned arcade game was a lot of fun. However, even with those great pros, it is way too pricey so I just have decided not to buy this game any time soon.
Ok, I did some parts. The new Bubble Booble is not fun as the original because : Commun point with all gamers (fun is to eat more than friends), make bubbles against the wall does not bring a point, secrets doors ?, and above all, there is no bonus stuff at each stage !!! (forot tureens, flasks, sugar canes, fire cross, umbrellas, etc...). What a pitty.
I love the original but to be honest, just looking at this "return" didn't do much for me :\ If they just put some more effort into the art style and level design then this would certainly be on my to buy radar!
Im happy there is a new Bubble Bobble game. But the level design is really average. Also the gameplay is too slow. I think the problem is making the game 4 player. It made the level too extended without a core area where battles happen.
Finally a game that isn't a must buy on the Switch. My wallet needs to cool down a bit. Also since I can't seem to find it anywhere else, who won Animus Harbinger?
Why am I concerned that this like Revolution 2? Played the EU version to get around the softlock but it was still pretty bad. Why in the year 2020 does this resemble that game more in gameplay and unnecessary additions than the original arcade trilogy? (BB, Symphony + Memories). Yikes man, still happy to play the arcade port though it has an annoying border just as I had feared... Worried but I really hope some of the small stuff like that get fixed at least via a patch. The main course this title offers appears to be a mobile-game side-dish to a $40-60 arcade port, just like Revolution... 😬 The awkward character designs too, yikes...
The SMS Final Bubble Bobble code would have been nice too, though that was only available for to japan for a single weekend. xD Taito just needs to throw all of the arcade, home computer and early-console ports into a single $30-40 release which would have MUCH more value than what this appears to have through the review. Maybe it’s better hands-on? Idk...
Yep, a decent but not stellar update at a ridiculous price.... they could have included the arcade sequels and added more levels themed around those mechanics (particularly the fantastic if rather different rainbow islands)
