- Magic Johnson's return to the NBA in January 1996. He was the Magic of old when he gave Sprewell a monster ball fake. The late Chick Hearn called it: "Sprewell went for it like a carp going after a worm."
Magic Johnson's Epic NBA Comeback: The Night Magic Returned Against the Warriors (January 1996) After a four-year hiatus from professional basketball, Magic returned to the hardwood in a spectacular fashion that left fans and players alike in awe.

I watched that game live...the fake pass was fantastic...
I watched it on tv . That fake was awesome. Whole living room went nuts cheering.. and we’re Warriors fans. lol
Exactly! Magic’s fake on Sprewell actually faked me too - as I watched it on TV, I looked at the player that I thought Magic was gonna give the ball🏀to. Lol
5:50 saved you guys 11 minutes. Here’s the play.
Thanks
tyvm
I remember that fake. I remember thinking, "Oh, my..."
Thank you. All this bullshit.
thanks
Respect to Cookie Johnson. Nobody gives her any credit for never leaving Magic when she had legit reasons to do so. She embodies that same positive happy go lucky energy that her man has. She seems very content and happy to stay in the background of her husband's life and career. They have never seemed like an LA couple to me. I don't know them personally, but they have always seemed like a couple that love and support each other through the good times and the bad times. So respect to Magic and Cookie.
Funny what money will do
@@wraith31 She could have divorced him and taken half of his earnings for life. It's California bruh.... give her some credit
They don't make women like that anymore.
@@wraith31divorce incentivizes women to leave. Especially when money is involved. She never stayed for the money. That is proof of that. That is the reason why we need to make it so that women cannot get anything when they divorce. There should be a penalty when you break a contract not a reward
@DayRenaissanceMan "we need to make it so that women cannot get anything when they divorce" Oh man 😄 I agree w/ u there friend bu if women didn't have that potential safety net/payoff that is divorce, there'd be virtuall no marriages and the human race would have died off long ago 😁 Its always "whats in it for them" bs

He started selling rims right after this game

Ah the 90’s ! Beautiful times!
The best!
Magic seems like one of the most genuine and likeable human beings on this earth
Basketball was so good back then. Magic played w/ so much enthusiasm & passion.
Man back when Chick Hearn 🕊️ was still on the mic, I miss these times.
This game is in the refrigerator.
Van Exel, Threatt, Peeler, Ceballos....ah the memories!
Eddie Jones
@@MikeHawk-yg3gk George Lynch. Vlade Divac, Elden Campbell. Duane cooper. Also shout out to Sedalle Threatt. One of the most underrated players of all time.
@@MikeHawk-yg3gk absolutely, Jones was electric when he burst on to the scene. Made everything look easy.
RIP Ced Ceballos

The way Magic plays instantly rubs off on the other players. It makes them want to share the ball. It's beautiful to watch. He was great at getting assists but his impact can't be measured by assists. It's way bigger than that. He changes the entire DNA of your team.
Man, when Magic took the warmups getting ready to come into the game? Started crying tears of joy frfr.
Magic Johnson coming back was honestly magical. ❤
Top 5 of All Time. Best PG of All Time.
I watched that game as a kid in high school.. I feel in love with Magic in 91 and then he retired. This was my first time really seeing him play in a season. The time in my life as a basketball fan was special. Thanks for posting this and taking me down memory lane.
I got knocked out playing basketball at the YMCA a few hours before this and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I can remember telling them I had to get home to watch this game! Seems like yesterday
Magic was my favourite players. He made his teamates better like no other players never does. He is the proof that the stats can't tell everything because, imho, he was the greatest playmaker this game ever had, and perhaps, the GOAT (this will be an eternal debate).
Stupid CZcams algo, this channel is one of the best.
He came to Australia during this period and I saw him in Melbourne, he was injured so only played a little bit. After the game he stayed back and talked to the crowd with a microphone, he was all class. He had many highlights from his tour here and as he said he knows the game so he can adjust.
Thanks so much for this video ❤ 💯
The best PG in NBA history. He would be dominant in any era.
What most people forget to appreciate is that Magic’s addition made them pretty much atop tier team that was only below an all time greatest Bulls squad. They were not a 50 win team without Magic. What’s more impressive is that he put up very good numbers being away from the game 5 years so it’s a fair debate Magic’s impact coming back was much more impressive than Mike’s stint in DC since the talk was the Lakers were a bonafide contender in many experts’ minds. People knew the Wizards were not contenders.
They had a deep squad. Ceballos dropped a 50 point game that year. Nick the quick was on his way to being an all star, and Eddie Jones was already one of the best 2 way players in the game. Sedalle Threat is criminally underrated and Elden Campbell was the best back up center in the league. Magic coming back brought back hope. He was the missing piece that put the Lakers back in contention.
Yes and no. Magic was retired for longer but Jordan was older as a wizard. I'd argue Magic had the better team as well.
He is one of the greatest basketball player's to play the game. Always wish you well Magic Johnson...
If magic play one more year with prime shaq and a rookie kobe 🤧
No Hiv or medications to bloat him probably would have played till 40.
Saw that one live!!!
I know I have it on VHS somewhere.
I remember watching this play in '96 when Magic unretired after his failed "Magic show." I think that was his first bucket in the NBA since '92. Don't forget that Johnson played in the '92 all-star game. Damn, haven't watched this play since it first happened 28 yrs ago. 😅😭
Even though there was a lot of team player issues with the younger players and Magic in the aftermath of his return, they actually won 53 games that year. Then they flamed out quickly in the 1st round to Houston.
good memory
Houston caught fire. You could say that the Lakers flamed out if Houston didn't win it all, but they brought home the chip. Big shot Bob and Sam Cassell hit every clutch shot, Mario Eliie was probably the best role player in the league at that time, and Hakeem was in all time great form at the center position. It's not that the Lakers flamed out to Houston, everyone flamed out to Houston.
@@Davivd2True, but why is it always a big deal to mention that the Lakers and Lebron were swept by the Nuggets last year if everyone was flaming out to them? 😅
@@Davivd2 That was the 94-95 Houston Rockets your speaking about. Magic returned in early 96. The 96 Rockets got swept by Seattle in the 2nd round. Ironically, the 95 Lakers a year before Magic returned, actually overachieved and made it to the 2nd round before they were defeated by David Robinson and the Spurs.
@@Riles3152 You're right. My memory is a bit hazy. It's been almost 30 years. lol. I still think that it was a fun year having Magic back. But it was weird. Wasn't Threat on the Rockets that season also? I remember the Rockets in the playoffs. Trying to replace Kenny Smith with Matt Maloney and Threatt coming off of the bench and playing well well. I miss that guy. He reminds me a lot of Lue Williams.
Damn cookie was cute as phuk back in the day
I remember this times. Magic was sick he had HIV and back in the days this was very dangerous sickness. Everybody thought he gonna die but somehow he managed to survived
Awesome video !!!
That was the beauty of Magic...he was a point guard in a power forward body. Dude played center in place of an injured Kareem as a rookie, in the FINALS!
I remember almost all the details with this game. Watched the entire game live, and still remember the 128-118 score. The fascinating thing about it was all the fast break action. At this time, 128 points was a LOT of points. Games in 1996 were around the 80s or 90s with points. This game had so much movement. But it wasn't watered down like today where there are too many 3 pointers and dumb plays where players will pass up 2 points on a fast break in favor of a corner 3 attempt.
The excitement surrounding that game was unparalleled. IDK if I have seen a game with more anticipation since. Magic was special. Magic, Kobe, Larry, Michael. Those guys are so much a part of basketball. It's something that I can't even put into words.
I was a teenager living in Argentina, born in the Bay Area. Long time Warriors fan, I watched this game with mixed emotions because I wanted the Warriors to win but also happy for Magic's return.
Magic Man!
He was so good but the most impressive part was that he always enjoyed his job. Always smiling
remember watching this game live Magic was other worldly
My guy George Lynch at the end💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Whos cutting onions, if your from LA and bleed the purple and gold this touches you in a special way
The greatest point guard to ever play period.
“He could have had a quadruple double with 2 more rebounds and 8 more steals” 😂
The NBA was SO much more fun to watch back in the Magic/Bird/Jordan era--back when they played as a TEAM!🏀
Magic never should have gone away.. but all in all I'd call his comeback successful. Per 36 minutes he wasn't that far off his old production. I think he started to wear down a bit towards the end of the season due to too much extra weight and of course age. But if he had wanted to and worked hard in the off season he probably could have squeezed out a couple more years. Imagine Magic with a rookie Kobe.
This video didn't need to be 11 minutes long...
Wow I'm old anuff to remember this game..👴. That fake out was crazy
rem this like yesterday
Can't believe it's been 28 years. Eddie Jones, Van Axel, Ceballos.. these are names I haven't heard in years
My memory of this game was that the Lakers had 40+ assists that game, the most any team had in a game up to that point of the season.
Damn. I don't remember 40 assists. 30 assists in a game is a damn good game. I do remember that the Lakers were just running all over the Warriors that game.
Have to admire the comeback. Despite being old and not in shape. Magic pushed through using effort and skill. One thing I admire about Magic was that he wasn’t afraid to learn from the greats. Him adopting Kareem’s foot work and post moves really helped him later in his career.
i read magics bio and he talks about himself and kareem in detail. kareem was more of the introvert, while magic was the newcoming star, but he respected and understood kareem and was humble enough to not fall into the trap of biting him and trying to take his spot.
Lakers fans don't know how blessed they have been with all these legends and LeBron not better than none of the Lakers legends period.
P. J. Carlesimo liked this video
I was at this game!!!
'He could've had a quadruple-double with 2 more rebounds and 8 more steals' -- 🤣
Magic was better than lebron
Magic Johnson is the greatest point guard of all time.
Magic had and still has more charisma than Lebron.
Yep, Lebron can't lead a team like Magic!
that was the first magic highlight i ever witnessed in real time. sent latrell str8 to the knicks wit that fake
Magic is the goat. Passing, scoring, rebounding, steals and constantly taking his team to the finals. All without a zen master coach.
And Riley was what? Trash? Get real, Magic had a great coach as well. And nobody in their right mind considers Magic the goat. He wasn't even the best of his generation.
@@brian4180 He’s not the GOAT but I would say he’s the GOAT of the lakers and not Kobe. Magic won 5 championships by the time he was 28 years old. He won those 5 against big time competition.
He had the greatest rookie playoff performance of all time including any sport. A point guard playing center because Kareem was injured. I saw that game on rerun and Magic was already the undisputed leader of that team and I’ve never seen that from 20 year old even since.
Ah, very interesting to read that taking a team to the finals is suddenly an accomplishment again when the discussion is about Magic's career 😂😂
@@averydaymond1560 without question Magic is goat of Lakers. And I have nothing but respect for Magic. All time great, upper end of all time top 10. Greatest point guard of all time. And overall just A+ Alpha winner. His resume is impeccable.

Lattrell sent Magic a postcard from his new postcode on that one.
Legend has it that pump fake was so severe that years later when P. J. Carlesimo faked giving Sprewell more ball touches...well you know the rest of that story. #ChokeMode
He looks like a tank out there
10:10 He could've had a quadruple double if he "had 8 more steals". What? LOL. Magic is a legend but good try. He also could've had 10 more blocks. LOL
Magic Johnson nuthuggery is insane
Game magic
Chuck was like fuck that!!!
Very little hands on physical defense to Magic. Even though they were told it was safe, players were still worried about catching AIDS from sweat or saliva. Lots of players had no comment when asked about their opinion.
I liked to see him thanking God and the Lord at the end 🙏 🙌 🙏
Me too. That made me smile. You could tell he was truly grateful to the Lord.
I can remember like it was yesterday when he came out with that announcement of being HIV positive and all of us being 100% sure that he was going to die. I remember his last All-Star game seeming like a funeral. Everyone was celebrating like it was the last time we were ever going to get a chance to know him as a player.
Never in my wildest dreams what I think I would be here in 2024 and him being a billionaire. Now the skeptic in me is completely convinced that someone somewhere decided to make him the spokesperson for HIV because of his attitude. He represents what everyone would call the "happy negro." Plus he was already involved in businesses and knew a lot of powerful people through his Laker connections. I think they already knew how to contain the disease obviously but they let a lot of innocent people die in the meantime and he is the proof that if you had enough money and connections you can pretty much survive or do anything.
That is why he was granted admission into the billionaires club. We are starting to see some of these things come out with Katt Williams and Dave Chappelle with Vincent McMahon and Donald Trump and the Jeffrey Epstein connections. It makes me wonder just how he got HIV to begin with and what stories we were told and which ones were true or not. Kind of like Eazy-E, Tupac and Biggie being assassinated.
Great presentation! I may subscribe 💯
damn I forgot Spreewell's been in there for a minute!!
Magic adapts to what the defense is doing. He could have played in any era at any speed.
This was only a few months before they acquired Shaq and Kobe, it’s wild how sports work.
7:00 nice catch.
Can you imagine if he'd waited just a few years later, and you had Shaq, Kobe, and Magic on the court at the same time!?
Magic is THE court general
I saw that game live.
Sprewell needed a map after that fake
If Magic had committed to play point forward instead of trying to take over point guard, it would have been truly special.
That title tho. deserves a monster pause lmao
Zing ! 😂
Defense those days we're really bad. Damn!
This is like watching old people play at the YMCA
If he stayed 1 more year. It would have been magic, Shaq, and Kobe.
The basketball Gods knew that was totally unfair so they stopped it
He look like Bynum runnin down the court......chu chu......

Isn't it crazy how players who so obviously and clearly look bigger than Lebron are listed at realistic weights while LeBron who looks big but lean is routinely weighed much heavier than guys like a young Karl Malone, David Robinson, or even this version of Magic even though all those guys look much more solid built or heftier? I still laugh at the serious reports of Bron supposedly being 280 in his mid 20s peak. Not even older Karl Malone was listed that heavy and that Karl Malone was nearly as girthy as Shaq, not to mention older David Robinson who looked like a superhero and would dwarf Giannis, but no, young lebron would outweigh him🤦♂ So much BS in NBA measurement records.
People have different body compitisions
Basketball reference weights are heavily misleading. I believe they stopped updating after their rookie years. Jordan is listed at 198 but clearly he gained more weight/muscle as his career progressed. He was at least 225 lbs with the Wizards.
They list Charles Oakley at 225 lbs and Kevin Durant at 240 lbs.
I have a hard time believing a toothpick like KD weighs 240. No way a gorilla like Oakley weighs 15 lbs less let alone at 225.

Magic was one year away from playing with Kobe and Shaq
It's worth mentioning why Magic retired the first time. The young kids don't what HIV or AIDS is.
Bird saying that then 😂😂 just think about how he views the NBA today😂
Cookie is as cool as they come.
Hate the Lakers but Magic was amazing in this game!
I hate to say it that Magic Johnson to me is better than LeBron James today he makes the team better
Probably right about that
I like Magic too. He's actually my GOAT. Still I don't think that's a good LeBron take. Whatever team LeBron goes to Is instantly a contender. And if he leaves the team they're in the lottery. He's had some good teammates but they've never been title contenders without him. We don't need to down one great to celebrate another one.
@@ShareefusMaximus think about every team he goes there whole roster change the whole roster or by allstar break. You have to add context. When he leave half the team leaves they used up all their picks.
