  • Magic Johnson's return to the NBA in January 1996. He was the Magic of old when he gave Sprewell a monster ball fake. The late Chick Hearn called it: "Sprewell went for it like a carp going after a worm."
Magic Johnson's Epic NBA Comeback: The Night Magic Returned Against the Warriors (January 1996) After a four-year hiatus from professional basketball, Magic returned to the hardwood in a spectacular fashion that left fans and players alike in awe.

Respect to Cookie Johnson. Nobody gives her any credit for never leaving Magic when she had legit reasons to do so. She embodies that same positive happy go lucky energy that her man has. She seems very content and happy to stay in the background of her husband's life and career. They have never seemed like an LA couple to me. I don't know them personally, but they have always seemed like a couple that love and support each other through the good times and the bad times. So respect to Magic and Cookie.

What most people forget to appreciate is that Magic’s addition made them pretty much atop tier team that was only below an all time greatest Bulls squad. They were not a 50 win team without Magic. What’s more impressive is that he put up very good numbers being away from the game 5 years so it’s a fair debate Magic’s impact coming back was much more impressive than Mike’s stint in DC since the talk was the Lakers were a bonafide contender in many experts’ minds. People knew the Wizards were not contenders.

    • @Davivd2

They had a deep squad. Ceballos dropped a 50 point game that year. Nick the quick was on his way to being an all star, and Eddie Jones was already one of the best 2 way players in the game. Sedalle Threat is criminally underrated and Elden Campbell was the best back up center in the league. Magic coming back brought back hope. He was the missing piece that put the Lakers back in contention.

Houston caught fire. You could say that the Lakers flamed out if Houston didn't win it all, but they brought home the chip. Big shot Bob and Sam Cassell hit every clutch shot, Mario Eliie was probably the best role player in the league at that time, and Hakeem was in all time great form at the center position. It's not that the Lakers flamed out to Houston, everyone flamed out to Houston.

I remember almost all the details with this game. Watched the entire game live, and still remember the 128-118 score. The fascinating thing about it was all the fast break action. At this time, 128 points was a LOT of points. Games in 1996 were around the 80s or 90s with points. This game had so much movement. But it wasn't watered down like today where there are too many 3 pointers and dumb plays where players will pass up 2 points on a fast break in favor of a corner 3 attempt.

I think he started to wear down a bit towards the end of the season due to too much extra weight and of course age. But if he had wanted to and worked hard in the off season he probably could have squeezed out a couple more years. Imagine Magic with a rookie Kobe.

I can remember like it was yesterday when he came out with that announcement of being HIV positive and all of us being 100% sure that he was going to die. I remember his last All-Star game seeming like a funeral. Everyone was celebrating like it was the last time we were ever going to get a chance to know him as a player.
Never in my wildest dreams what I think I would be here in 2024 and him being a billionaire. Now the skeptic in me is completely convinced that someone somewhere decided to make him the spokesperson for HIV because of his attitude. He represents what everyone would call the "happy negro." Plus he was already involved in businesses and knew a lot of powerful people through his Laker connections. I think they already knew how to contain the disease obviously but they let a lot of innocent people die in the meantime and he is the proof that if you had enough money and connections you can pretty much survive or do anything.
That is why he was granted admission into the billionaires club. We are starting to see some of these things come out with Katt Williams and Dave Chappelle with Vincent McMahon and Donald Trump and the Jeffrey Epstein connections. It makes me wonder just how he got HIV to begin with and what stories we were told and which ones were true or not. Kind of like Eazy-E, Tupac and Biggie being assassinated.

If Magic had committed to play point forward instead of trying to take over point guard, it would have been truly special.

Isn't it crazy how players who so obviously and clearly look bigger than Lebron are listed at realistic weights while LeBron who looks big but lean is routinely weighed much heavier than guys like a young Karl Malone, David Robinson, or even this version of Magic even though all those guys look much more solid built or heftier? I still laugh at the serious reports of Bron supposedly being 280 in his mid 20s peak. Not even older Karl Malone was listed that heavy and that Karl Malone was nearly as girthy as Shaq, not to mention older David Robinson who looked like a superhero and would dwarf Giannis, but no, young lebron would outweigh him🤦‍♂ So much BS in NBA measurement records.

Basketball reference weights are heavily misleading. I believe they stopped updating after their rookie years. Jordan is listed at 198 but clearly he gained more weight/muscle as his career progressed. He was at least 225 lbs with the Wizards.
They list Charles Oakley at 225 lbs and Kevin Durant at 240 lbs.
I have a hard time believing a toothpick like KD weighs 240. No way a gorilla like Oakley weighs 15 lbs less let alone at 225.

I like Magic too. He's actually my GOAT. Still I don't think that's a good LeBron take. Whatever team LeBron goes to Is instantly a contender. And if he leaves the team they're in the lottery. He's had some good teammates but they've never been title contenders without him. We don't need to down one great to celebrate another one.

When he leave half the team leaves they used up all their picks. When he left Cleveland the first time half the team was gone few players was hurt when he left Miami few players was hurt the way Chris Bosch blood clot when he goes to a team a D Carmela Anthony had to be honest.
