Latrell Sprewell: From CHOKING HIS COACH to Playing in The Finals! A STORY OF REDEMPTION | FPP

- He didn't start playing organized basketball until he was a high school senior, yet became a multiple time NBA All Star and even an All NBA player. But that's the part of LAtrell Sprewell's story that you don't hear; as after making one big mistake by choking his head coach PJ Carlesimo, that's become what you automatically associate his name with, or maybe it's his infamous quote that he "has a family to feed" as he turned down $21 Million Dollars. But Latrell Sprewell was one of the most exciting, talented and underrated players of his generation. He took the JuCo route before suiting for the Alabama Crimson Tide during his upperclassmen years, alongside guys like Robert Horry and JAmes "Hollywood" Robinson. He was drafted as a raw prospect to the Don Nelson led Warriors, where he injected life into a team that was seeing the quick decline of their stars, Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway. Chris Webber would join him briefly, but that was over as quicly as it had started; and Sprewell the next few years as a great player on a bad team. But a mistake in December, 1997 saw him choke his coach and be given the longest non-drug related suspension in NBA history at the time; and even though he made a mistake, he was painted as a villain and became a scapegoat, even though he was definitely provoked. His career could have been over, but the New York Knicks would take a chance on him; and he would more than redeem himself with the New York Knicks alongside Allan Houston, Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson; as Sprewell was the X-FActor of their 1999 NBA FInals run. He would help the Knick transition out of the PAtrick Ewing era, before spending his final seasons with the Minnesota TImberwolves, teaming with Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell to give the the Timberwolves their first and only Western Conference Finals Appearance. But then his career ended abruptly after he was worth more than he was being offered. So even there's a couple blemishes on Sprewell's career, he was one of the most popular during the 90s whose on-court game doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves.

I’ve always liked Latrell Sprewell. Yes he was a bit of a hothead, but on the court, he was a tremendous talent, competitor on both ends of the court and was fun to watch. If it wasn’t for the choking incident, he very well may have ended up in the Hall of Fame. Dude played with an edge and a fire that I just don’t see in most star players today.

Latrell Sprewell's career was somewhat derailed by immaturity, but when he was rolling, there weren't many wings who were better than him.
He choked his coach P.J. Carlesimo in an ugly incident and spent the rest of his career trying to rehab his image and channel his aggression.

RIP was the man. He won at every level, except high school because Coatesville couldn’t get past Kobe & Lower Merion. Natty @ UConn @ chip with the Pistons. I remember working at Nova Basketball camp after Detroit beat LA. Jay Wright talked about RIP’s movement without the ball to the camp kids for about five minutes. He was so hard to guard because he was always on the move wearing out his defender.

Latrell Sprewell became one of my favorite players from being one of my big brother's (not a big sports fan) favorite players player. I was like if he liked Spree then I might should pay attention go him. As for me I am a lifetime sports fan and player and had all the video games and cards. I absolutely loved those Sprewell, Houston, Camby and LJ teams. Then my brother bought me a Sprewell Knicks dunk figure collectable. So thank you for making this truly Forgotten Player video. By the way i even had my hair like his and Troy Hudson when they played for Timberwolves since it was already long like that.
That T’Wolves team was sick. Troy Hudson came out of nowhere, a true bucket getter.
Each year his two hand dunks got crazy and crazier. From college it didn't look as strong. Then his rookie year he started putting the ball behind his head with more power. I really love that two hand dunk. One of the best signature dunks if not the best.

Sprewell's stock REALLY dropped, even in the summer of 1995. That was after he was All-NBA FIRST Team in 1993-94! In the summer of 1995, an OAKLAND writer was asked if the Warriors might do a Rod Strickland for Latrell Sprewell trade, since both were disgruntled. The OAKLAND writer said, "They might do an Otis Thorpe for Sprewell trade." Now, I love Otis Thorpe, but Thorpe was 33 and on the downside at that time." Of course, in 1997-98, Sprewell was temporarily worthless. He was a great ball handler with the Knicks, REGULARLY going coast to coast on fast breaks!

The Sonics had just come off of our second first round playoff loss, and EVERYBODY was so anti-Gary Payton in Seattle (yes, he was a punk). There was thoughts of trading Gary Payton for Latrell Sprewell, and then trading Kendall Gill for Rod Strickland, giving Seattle Strickland and Sprewell in the backcourt, WOW!!! But, to answer your good question, maybe they were ready to flip Tim Hardaway somewhere. OR, fans (myself included) believed that if the Sonics traded Gill for Strickland, and kept Payton, that we could make it work with Strickland and Payton in the backourt. Or, that the Warriors could have made it work with Hardaway and Strickland, or Hardaway and Payton, especially since Payton and Strickland were tall enough to play 2 guard. Believe me, after 1995, I wanted Strickland in Seattle SO badly! During 1994-95, I wanted Clyde Drexler in Seattle SO badly! I DO admit, that my "NBA trade ideas world" revolved around the Sonics and Blazers. Oh, as for Otis Thorpe, at the 1994-95 trade deadline, I heard that Charlotte was offering Hersey Hawkins, and the Lakers were offering Anthony Peeler AND a #1 pick! Portland REALLY undersold what they could have gotten for Otis Thorpe! The Blazers and Sonics are so STUPIT, when it comes to drafts and trades!!

Thanks for this one, I was looking forward to seeing a video on Latrell when I saw you hadn't done one on him yet. Also, that Brian Shaw episode on the Paul George podcast might be one of my favorites of any I've heard just for the stories he tells about every big star he's played with.
The nba is the only job where you can choke your boss and not go to jail for it. Shaw and his team-mates should've got Spree off of their coach,pro ball players are such prima-donas and entitled folks. I wish that first judgement had been up-held,Spree needed to be taught a very hard lesson.

Don Nelson was highly successful.
As a coach, his offensive genius, was a fire runner to much of what we see in the modern game.
I can remember his success in Milwaukee when I was young. They had some extremely talented players.
I remember his teams always had versatile bigs who could face and shoot and “space” the floor.
The fast pace of the Warriors~ as a fan of the game, I loved watching his teams play.
Even as a “fan” of those Warrior teams, the way Nelson, “broke” up the team essentially after one season, with all of that young talent ~ pitiful.
I have nothing good to say about P.J ~ despite his modest college success, never thought he should’ve been an NBA head coach.
I can recall a few stories about players at Seton Hall “disliking” his ways … I also remember him being an assistant on the Spurs and inexplicably getting another head coaching job years later.
I was a fan of him at GS then when he was traded to my Knicks omg i was so happy . He would make me jump in joy but days id be yelling at tv to stop shooting. lol He was very erratic on the floor of good days and some bad days but i would keep him on my team no matter what.

Grew up in the bay area and followed The Warriors during his tenure there. Trust me. We all took LS side. The die hard fans weren't clutching our pearls shocked shocked by Spreewell attacking PJ and thinking he was everything wrong with the sport and troubled youth, but instead, wondered 1) what stupid ass thing coach did or said to inspire the attack and 2) what took so long for someone to finally have done this to PJ. Yeah. We knew the truth and not the media narrative painting Spree as the heavy. PJ deserves to have his head likeness carved from stone and inshrined onto the peaks of Mount DucheMore. Spree went to the Lakers and ended up getting suspended throwing a referee onto the scoring table. Guess what. I admire his restraint. That ref was a piece of shit and stain to his profession. Magic returned to play and tried to mentor him, but then he himself bumped into a ref while arguing and hilariously got ejected and suspended too. In Magic's case, it was incidental contact and an accident that the ref over-reacted on. Spree throwing the ref on the scoring table was a formal justifiable grievance rebuttal to terrible pkay calling. Spree is a national treasure and GD hero

Yes, we definitely remember Spree for choking his coach and he couldn’t feed his family on $21 million. But he definitely had game. It’s like with everyone. The only thing people remember is what’s talked about. Negative things outweigh positive things. It’s sad. Of course he should be held responsible for his own actions and behavior, but also let’s not forget that Spree was one of the best players in the game at the time.
