- In this video I show how to build a super easy diy pressure treated wood planter box. These go with the popular ferns very well. The box uses only 2 pressure treated fence pickets at $2.30 a piece at the time of this video, wood glue and 1" brad nails thats it. This planter box can easily be scaled up or down depending on what you would like.
After this one jump in to a larger planter build with these plans!

Yours is the best, no nonsense, no over-engineering video for making planters. People take note.
Thanks a lot Jim!
Agrees, its great. I have issue with the claim of "Under $5 to make.". Like sure, you used 2 fence pickets. But you also used maybe $600 worth of tools .
@Chungus Dongus you can use a hammer and some nails and a circular saw.
@Mike Vanderburg you can just as easily use hand tools. The power tools just make it a little easier and quicker.
I like the humility of this mans skill
Thanks for this project! I made two for my wife, she loves them!!
That is great! Glad to hear that.
My parents just asked if I could make a few fern planters for them, thanks for the short cut!
As a newbie to wood working... literally the easiest and straight forward DYI instructions I've come across. 10/10... I just subscribed bc of that.
Awesome to hear! Thanks for subscribing.
Thanks for the great instructions. It’s a good thing the safety police are on high alert to warn people to be safe because nobody can think for themselves.
Right? Gets old hearing people take it upon themselves to tell a grown man what to do~
For practical, everyday woodworking projects and advice, there is no better teacher than Brady Hommel.
Your video editing is perfect for me. Perfect pace, no over explaining, easy to understand. I’ve decided to start my woodworking hobby here and now with this project. I’ll make these for Mother’s Day gifts! Thanks homie :)
Dude! I so wish more people providing tutorials would watch this video and get a feel for how true, GOOD COMMUNICATION and knowledge sharing is done. You, my friend, are an amazing teacher! Don't change a thing. Looking forward to watching more of your tutorials. Really beautiful work here. Love the finished product - but even more importantly (for me anyway) I love how easily I was able to understand so effortlessly what you wanted me to learn. Bravo! And thank you!
Yes, definitely. When I see a video not give dimensions and send you to a darn ETSY link, I IMMEDIATELY stop following that creator and never watch another video.
I've watched several videos lately of this style of planter box. This box seems to be one of the better-constructed boxes and the instruction was very clear. Instant subscribe.
Great to hear Donovan. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for the comment!
Loved the video especially that there is no loud music in the background so I can hear everything you say fantastic
Appreciate that! Glad you liked it
Quick and easy for less than $10, cool thanks.
Your welcome!
Thanks so much. I built this planter yesterday. This video was a guide step-by-step on what to do how long to cut the pieces and everything and because of that I was able to build that planter. Thank you so much the other videos that I watch don’t walk you through the process they want you to head over to the website to purchase their plans but it helps to have that guided assistance especially for someone who in experienced like myself. Thank you so much because of this I have subscribed to your channel and I hit the like button. Thanks again.
Great to hear! So glad the video was helpful to you and that you were able to build it for yourself!! Thanks for your comment
Just finished a pair of your tall planters . Now I’m going to build a few of these.
Awesome!
Alrighty! Started this morning. Soon will see what I ended up with, Brady! Fingers crossed!
Well 8 months later.... How'd it turn out? Haha
Great job on your presentation brother. I'm pallet&crate wood hobbyist/builder. I love this build you've done here. It would be pretty simple to modify this build into a 2 tier, or 3, or more even. Really cost effective. Those of us who still don't have a pocket hole gig won't modify the build any to reproduce it.
Awesome - great concise details!
So easy and simple. Thanks for the video
You got it! Thanks for the comment
Brady, thank you. Made 11 planter boxes so far. Revised legs to 16". People love them. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work !!
Glad to hear that Fred! Thanks for the comment
I’m making these now, painting the legs black and doing a square top and they are selling nicely! I love this design!!!
Awesome to hear! I like the touch of the black legs. I can envision that that looks pretty good!
What color are you painting the rest of it?
I was wondering how much do these sell for? just to get an idea.
@@emaw1976 b la c k
I was wondering as well
Some of the people in these comments just kill me lmfao. Amazing video man! Definitely something I will be adding to my spring projects.
Only found this channel this morning and I'm already intrigued 🙌 thank you for putting in the time and effort on your videos!! 🙏
Appreciate your comment. Thank you! Glad your enjoying the videos!
Thanks for the clear, detailed tutorial!
Your welcome!
Great video! Going to try these for sure
Hey thanks for the video. These are great! I have been experimenting with different ones. I built three already! One in cedar in the size you show and two more out of pine pickets painted gray (16 inches) Glad I found this one! Now we just need more time!
Many of these plans here but I like yours the best, thanks for posting these plans
Fence Pickets!!! You said the magic word. I love working with those!
HI Thank you for posting this video I am going to make two of these for my front yard. I will let you know how it works out. Thank you again.
Sounds great! How did it work out?
@@BradyHommel It worked out good my wife stained them put one of her potted plants in each of them, she showed them to her eye Dr now he wants one for a plant in his office waiting room.
Nice simple design and to the point video. Keep them coming !

Wow it’s beautiful ❤❤❤ the wood is not expensive and is easy to make. Thank you so much🎉🎉❤❤❤
Thanks for the video. I'll be trying to make 2 of these for our house this Spring!
Your welcome!
Thank you for the informative instructions.
Your welcome!
This is probably the easiest design I've seen for this style planter! Have cedar pickets in the garage and gonna make some soon!
Awesome! They are great little planters
i like these projects you have, well done.
Thank you!
nice build Thanks for sharing, will be making some of these
Nice! They sell pretty good in the spring time
Great plans! I used some old fence pickets and now they look like rustic re-claimed barn wood. Just took me a few extra to mill the old pickets to the right dimensions.
Simple easy project. Any home person with a saw and nailer can do! Nice 👍
Thanks!!
So easy and right to it thanks I've made me a few and I added a short trellis to them from the inside for my Hoya plants I potted them in them and now to watch them grow and climb for me I'm so happy 😊😊
Glad to hear that! Love the trellis idea!
Wow. What a nice job.
Thanks so much Sandy!
That's awesome! i'm going to build some this weekend, Thanks!
Great time of year for it! I am building some more too. Larger ones than these. Video should be out next week.
Pretty cool thank you. Gets me motivated to do similar.
Great to hear that!
Nice video. Exactly what I needed. Thanks.
Great to hear! Thanks for the comment!
Great instructional video! I will be making some very soon.
Great to hear! Glad you liked it. Thanks!
I just stumbled upon your channel - INSTANT Subscribe. Love your content. No filler, straightforward, helpful, and excellent designs. I love it! Thanks for the tutorials.
Appreciate that comment! Thank you!
Great video - good info - very well done. I am going to make a bunch of these and sell them. Thanks so much. I will follow you for more ideas.
Glad it was helpful! They sell pretty good in the spring time!
Great inexpensive build Brady. Will need to make a couple of inches wider for my 5 gal pots. Unfortunately some people don’t understand that a professional woodworker will have the necessary tools to make things easy. I’m not a professional but have the DYI tools needed for about $500 that I use for all my projects. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment! Check out my video on the large planters I built. Those work with 5 gallon buckets
Another very good video. Thank you!
Glad you like it. Thank you!
Brilliant. I’ve just acquired a mitre saw and a small table saw. Haven’t done woodworking before….this is definitely going to be my first project.
Awesome! Perfect first project and perfect time of year for a planter box! Good luck!
awesome job !!!
Thank you!
Loved it and the fact that u don’t over explain ur self jus kept it simple laymen terms 👍
Glad to hear that Jason!
great video! so clever!
Thank you!
I loved this it’s an easy build thanks ❤
Great to hear!
Awesome super easy build and with only two fence pickets!
Thanks! Working on a couple more this week that I will be sharing
What an easy video! I want to make these, and sell them. I feel like this this a great come into wood work video. Still learning my miter and just other wood working tools and stuff like this, really helps! Thanks Man! Please keep it up!
I appreciate your comment and glad the video will be helpful for you! Thanks!
Great vid
I can't wait to try this!
Have fun!
Nice, easy build. I had an issue with the boards cupping. The brad nails weren't enough to keep everything flush while the glue dried, so clamping was needed. I'll try cedar next time and see if that works better...just have to charge a little more for them. Thanks for the vid!
Great info and tips....💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Thanks!
Thank you so much.. I’m going to try this
Glad to hear that! Thank you!
It’s true, all of it! Great instructions and it’s simple to put together with a brad nailer, table saw and miter saw. Thank you! And the exact pickets are on sale right now at Lowe’s for $1.98 each. You really can assemble a great looking box for under $5 in less than an hour first go!
Went today it’s $2.18. Going to make one today will add pics when done.
Don’t know how to add pic but it came out great 1 little mistake my 45 degree cut didn’t line up perfect in 1 corner. But a great success.
Nice job
Thank you!
Great job just enough information tks
Glad you liked it!
Thank you great content! New subscriber keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot Mike!
Thank you. I just made my first one!
Great to hear!
Thank you
awesome!! thanks
Your welcome Willy!
Pure genius
Thanks!
Cool design! Thanks for sharing! Just made one. 1 note of caution for SawStop users, be careful ripping wet lumber, may trip the safety.
Good to know for sawstop users. Did yours trip?? Also note lots of times there are staples at the ends of these boards. Not sure if that would trip it as well?
@@BradyHommel thank goodness mine did not trip… this time. Just a tip I remembered when researching it, and my local stores keep fence pickets outside (I used cedar) so there is treatment + the elements. Ah yes, definitely removed staples in my boards too. Cheers!
I just love em'
Thanks! Glad to hear that
Nice.
Great job man......I'm going to make and sell me some of those planters from scrap pallet wood 🤩
Great idea to use pallet wood! Thanks a lot for the comment!
cool planter,,,i`m going to make a few did you make the chairs ?
Well this was freakin awesome
I love this tutorial! Will HD or Lowes cut the wood for me? Also, should I sand and stain prior to assembling?
So I cut the boards to the size, but because I have a small miter saw I could not stack the pickets. I learned that you must cut 2 of each from each picket to only use 2. I had to cut my final piece from a third picket. Still turned out great. Just wanted to pass it along.
Thanks. Great video. Keep up the good work. I'll be back.
Thank you!
Just finished making my 1st planter box, everything went great, the only issue I had was that some of the pickets were thicker in places and when I made the top trim some of the 45 corners didn't match up on the corner heights but that's OK, it's my first and my wife loved it, it will be inside on a covered deck so I used regular wood glue, but will go back thru with screws when I have time.
if you have a planer just run it through so they are all exact
Whenever I see ferns next to a chair, I expect Zach Galifianakis to show up.
Just wanted to say Thanks..
Appreciate that! Thank you!
What a fun project. What table saw are you using
Thanks! I don't remember the exact model. I sold it. But it was a Delta from lowes.
@@BradyHommel I thought it was Delta. I sold mine 25 years ago. Big mistake. I need another lol.
In the uk - cedar pales are nearly £10 each. so have used pressure treated instead at £3.21
Great video. Would really be helpful if you could add how lining could be added so that it can be used as a planter. Thanks
Thank you! I just bought landscape fabric and stapled it in there.
Did you make those chairs outside? Do you have a video? Also can you please do a pool lounger?
I would like to make some, and maybe get a few extra cash......thanks for the vid good info and easy plans, how much do you sell them for anyway, so I can get an idea
