Just wanted to point out that there's zero evidence in Fallout 1 or 2 that the pipboy 2000 is wrist mounted, and in fact ample evidence that it isn't. It was most likely designed with a tablet interface in mind.
You should read the vault dwellers survival guide written in 1997. Specifically under the ROBCO PIPBOY 2000 4-20 section.
“PIPBoy 2000 (hereafter called the PIPBoy), is a handy device that you wear on your wrist.”
@@Iron_Age Well, color me bummed out. I went and checked and I'm kinda shocked and very disappointed. Lame.
No lie I also thought it was a tablet or even strapped to the waist before making this!
More Fallout Drinks based on the show, pretty please!
Your skyrim episode is my favourite, it's so cozy.
@@howtodrinkI am ashamed. I wasn't subscribed to you until now. I love your channel!
Actually, it does make sense that pip-boys would be used in the military, because if you side with the brotherhood, and use the vertibird grenades, you can connect your pipboy to the vertibird and fly to where you want to go.
Wait really
@@Noneotherthan-oz5keyeah, at a certain point in the brotherhood quest line, they’ll give you vertibird smoke grenades. It’ll basically just call one over and you can use it as a flying taxi which can be useful if you’re playing in survival
The 38911 bytes of free memory that it says it has after booting is (in our world) what a Commodore 64 running BASIC has!
Imagine all the computing power and ram of a commodore 64, including a screen, all in a device small enough to wear on your wrist!
@@JaredConnellSo 0.1 % of my smartphone.
if at all robco used the power armor's hud for the pip boy. there's no way that someone reinvents the wheel
Agrreee
But the reason it's a hud is because while in power armor the pip boy wouldn't fit on your wrist power armor is to bulky
I don't understand this comment.
@@justhere4637I’m guessing they’re saying since the power amors hud was so good, they would’ve just used it for the pip boy, not sure though
@@frxsty2585 yes
The Pip-Boy 3000A biometrically locks to its wearer's wrist when worn. When the lock is engaged, the Pip-Boy can only be removed by the wearer or by brute force. As is mentioned briefly in Operation Anchorage, forcefully removing locked Pip-Boys has a tendency to either break them or cause them to brick themselves as a security measure.
So you take it off when you take a shower or go to bed.
I was immediately about to comment this, but I wanted to check if someone else had. I bought the GOTY edition on steam for 5$, best purchase I have ever made.
Getting the pimpboy 3billion is always essential for every play through
The thing with the Pip-Boy is that it must be durable enough to last two hundred years.
And have enough battery life and durability
@@AHandleWasAlreadyTaken it literally has a micro fusion cell inside, god knows how many centuries that can stay on
Seemed to work
@@AHandleWasAlreadyTaken Well with the fact that it's probably nuclear powered, I'm surprised the vault-dwellers don't have a much much higher than average probability of cancer in their left forearm.
I’m guessing the power armour had a hud that connects to the owners pip boy, and would show tactical information for the soldier, but still works with other pip boys
Design wise the 2000 mk VI is my favorite but functionality wise the 3000 Mk VI is my favorite because the 2000 doesn't allow you to access the map
I love that they seem vacuum tube based
Yes that’s why they’re so primitive compared to IRL devices, since those have long followed Moore’s law.
@@istrumguitars isn’t moores law broken now?
@@SkepticalZack Naw, there was a theory that Moore’s law was supposed to end a few years ago but it hasn’t. We’re still doubling the number of transistors every 18 mos or so.
They were going to have a geiger counter on the original pip boys but it was in the shop!
I figured what happened was that RobCo kept introducing new models of the PipBoy but couldnt completely deprecate previous models due to compatibility concerns, so for instance the PipBoy 2000 kept being refreshed and retrofitted with more features from the newer models while still keeping the old features and design. Maybe also the 2000 was offered as a lower cost option?
Maybe, high skilled doctors are able to disconnect the biometric seals in pipboys, and since doc mitch is a surgeon, that may explain few things.
But yea thats just a theory...
Most advanced despite looking like it's from the 1970's graphics wise... Then again there is a lot of futuristic parts to it...
Easiest explanation I've heard is that the fallout timeline split from ours around the 60's. Instead of exploring micro processing (motherboards, chips, plasma and LED displays) they chose to explore nuclear fusion and fission, and how to make those processes more safe/convenient. Much like how we got the dark web, they got micro fusion cells and laser guns and tank body armor
Vacuum tubes are futuristic? lol
@@SlyFireVRnot really. that’s kind of how bethesda sees fallout but it’s actually retro futurism. it’s supposed to be how people from the 1950s imagined what the future would look like, not the 1950s with advanced technology
A detail you may have missed! while being used as a diagnostic tool for power armour, your character will tap on the pipboy, as if the screen was touchscreen. its the only instance ive noticed of this action
2000 MK VI is peak Pip-Boy design
3000 MK IV us better, more durable and less fragile.
@@Tonius126he meant cosmetically cause the 3000 mk IV literally looks like cheap plastic
@@fpsboss You also look for sense of practicality and immersion that come from the cosmetics.
With the 3000 MK IV, you get the sense it is more durable and lighter.
@@Tonius126 The 3000 MK A series in my opinion is the best I think that outside of the Boston area hardware and software wouldn't be designed or updated for MK IV hardware and software making the systems added since the A series redundant (like the seemingly proprietary plug adapter produced for the limited release in the Boston area useless in most of the country) I would guess there would be more situations where compatability errors would occur older systems not recognising the MK IV and causing various issues. I feel that for the well travelled wastelander the 3000 A series is still the best fir its wide adoption rate seemingly in vaults across and facilities across the country on both sides of the coast meaning replacement parts will be relatively common and the machine will be recognised when interacting with most systems that would have not received the new updates for compatability with MK IV models due to its low adoption rate due to low production before the great war
.
This is way too long
@@Cadian-8th-4676 the plug adapter lets the user hack and reprogram robots, making it a superior pipboy to 3000 A. Also the bottons and being on the right makes it a much more intuitive than the 3000 A having it all on the left, much better for the majority right handed waster.
I hate to say this, espically for 76, but the pip-boy design is my favortie.
Thank you for making this video! Been wanting a good Pip Boy history video, and im surprised no one made one sooner!
A new Fallout CZcamsr, we shall watch your career with great interest.
its minda funny how in fallout 1 and 2 they give you an older model pip boy than falloout 76, despite 76 connonically taking place before the other games
But vault 13 was made before 76 so that is the reason
I figure the model of Pip-Boy just varies between vaults or certain vaults did further research into upgrading them.
Whatever pipboy you get can also just be another variable in your vaults dedicated experiment.
@@rogeliorocha7221 thast a really good theoryactually, I never thought about that
Gas video. High quality and on the same level as other fallout lore CZcams vids. 10/10
Sweet thanks for the motivation!
Is "gas" like the new version of saying something is "lit" and/or "fire?"
@@ThommyofThennI guess so but it doesn’t sound as nice lol
I'm so hype for this one
Just found this randomly really well done video you got yourself a subscriber brother keep ‘em coming 💪🏽
Thanks man, really appreciate it!
I also had this pop up. I watch two of the "bigger" (idk what word to use but i don't mean to imply any greater quality or anything like that. Just ones that hapoen to have large audiences at this point in time.) And it's nice to have the algorithm get it right for once. This kind of stuff is exactly what I look for in fallout videos. Something some might consider minor but long time fans find very interesting.
Thank you Lore Master, Iron age!
You are welcome young watto
I play on Xbox so i use the Lore friendly Robco Tactical Tablet. Its initially the Pip-Boy 2000 but with a sleek all black exterior shell.
This video will need to be updated once the TV show comes out 😉
Great video my dude lots of cool information keep up the good work.
Amazing video, I just came across your account. I can’t wait to watch more of your fallout videos
Thanks, I really appreciate that! It’s hard to balance this with work but I’ve been keeping at it.
This may seem heretical but I think the pipboy 3000 with its slim like look is better over 4's blocky/bulky appearance.
Also whats weird is that hte pipboy 3000 in fallout 3 or the 360 version I have, the glove on the left hand is always present no matter the suit you wear, while in new vegas, the pipboy itself persist but not the glove, might be slightly different versions but its a thought.
Also my theory for the bioseal is more for securing to the user's arm, heck, chances are it can be removed just that you need a specific know how because the method is so out of the way.
However in world, the pipboy at best is probably used for its map and hardware to gain access to possible caches. As for something like stats is just a game thing.
Just made me think they didn't discover phones in this universe, it bring replace by the pip-boy
Damn how did you do the edit of the pip boy 1.0 so detailed 😮
14:01 it would make more sense to move them to the right. If it’s on your left wrist you can use only your right hand
Yooo smash hit Iron, was there a different pip boy in the fallout shelter series?
I assume they use the 3000MKIV like in fallout 4
in the game Fallout: A Post-Nuclear Role Playing Game 2 (1998) the Pip-Boy was the User Interface (UI) seen at the bottom of screen as a belt implied to worn around the waist of the chosen one.
Great vid 🎉
Thanks! Much appreciated!
Great video
Great video but what did you mean by "short description in case you forgot why you have a [item] in your inventory" during the Pip-Boy 3000 section? I would assume you're referring to the names of the items but I'm not sure how that'd help you remember why you have an item in your inventory.
Still a great video though. I'll be sure to try watching other essay type videos if they drop because you got a nice voice to listen to in the background.
That was probably just my mistake. I think it made its way into my script and didn’t get filtered out after recording. Sorry about that.
If you're new to fallout this is for you, if your a veteran. You are just bored to death with this guy
Very fun recap, for a newbie like me…
Thanks
Pip boy has scan lines in every game, but has in lore "high resolution"?
I don't understand.
Take it up with Tim Cain
High resolution in fallouts univers
High resolution in 1970 1960 1950 terms
I like the idea of some grizzled old vault resident who just *knows* this tech inside and out, helping a wastelander with their problems. Like, the thing was set to a blue background for 200 years and that specific CRT burned out. He knows how to adjust the colors like it's muscle memory, so lo-and-behold, the thing worked just fine the whole time! Just keep it on green. If she gives you any trouble, bring her on back and he'll turn it to amber for you!
Worst case, he's got a few spare bulbs floating around somewhere! We'll get you sorted out and on your way in no-time!
What was the music used at the start of the video? been looking for it for ages! Also really great Video!
Thanks! Also it’s called “metallic monks” from the original fallout soundtrack
I feel like the Marl IV is "Military Grade" while all the other models are more "Civilian".
13:07 pimp-boy 💀
The 1.0 is amazing
Also I’m not sure but I do believe that the 76 version you can change the color of the Pipboy based on RBG. Not sure if it’s like that lore wise. But most colors are not as bright as green.
Although it also affects the pcs as well. No idea if they interact in any way lore wise.
So..pip boys are Fallout's smartphones? Thats pretty awesome- I wish my phone had a built in gieger counter and life support monitoring.
Same, and I wish I could wear mine 24/7 without getting a smashed screen or having the phone killed by rain or swimming
Nice vid
Thanks!
490th sub!!!!♥️♥️ loved the video!
Anyone have an idea of what exactly is meant by "clues?" I assume its a cut feature but it would be neat to know exactly what the devs considered an appropriate hint. Like how hand-holdy would they have been? Great video btw and subbing
My take on it is that older games didn’t really give tutorials on how to play. So maybe it’s making fun of the few games at that point that did start to include tutorials in their games. We all know which way that ended up going though.
Bro I dunno how you only have 491 subs but I’m adding one.
As a left handed fella it was always worn on the left arm and is smaller on one end so it couldn’t be worn ambidextrously (in 3 and nv) so it’s not like we could use that hand anyway
But it’s nice to be able to keep holding a 10 mm pistol in your left hand while still being able to manipulate your pip boy so southpaw vault dwellers stay winning
Imagine getting upset that the pipboy in fallout 1 & 2 is not a tablet
The pip boy is just a glorified smartphone with some new features and a lot less
Yeah but I wish I could wear my phone on my wrist and not have to worry about it getting rained on or smashed in normal use (let alone in battle!) I love how durable the pip boy is.
I don't think you mentioned this, but is the holographic mode of the FO76 PIP-Boy an actual in-universe feature, or just for player convenience?
the 2000 mkVI can also have custom RGB display colors (in the fo76 settings)
(it's also the best looking pip-boy imo)
What use does the Pip-Boy have inside the vault other than getting out of the vault?
which came latest, the 3000 MkIV or the 2000 MkVI? Considering both have a pretty similar UI
Swell video friend
Lol, ATMEL chip company existed in the Fallout universe.
😄
interesting video
"Sorry left handed people you're days of left handed domminance are now over"
Me a left handed user who would use the pip boy 3000 MKIV with the right hand because its confortable: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
what about the TV fallout show pipboy, its the best one to all of them
Huh, apparently I was already subbed, but YT hadnt shown me any notifications until now. Kinda annoying when they just stop showing a channel. At least they didn't randomly unsub me this time 😂
YES METAL MONKS!
so a pip boy is basically a strap on phone
If the Pip-Boy were issued to soldiers pre-war, wouldn't Nate have one before the vault?
Or maybe his was confiscated because war criminal?
It was probably given to high ranking members
You forgot the pip-pad (its real)
So the pip boy is always on the left hand. How was the dials on the left side be a left and user when they still have to use the right hand to activate dials 😂
You never mentioned VATS. Is that canon or not? It is almost never mentioned directly in game.
I actually looked into it when researching for this vid. Bethesda’s reasoning for how it works is extremely inconsistent. You are actually able to use VATS in FO4 before picking up your pipboy.
@Iron_Age
I always heard that that was unintended.
Though the only mention of it in fallout 4 is both indirect and removed content.
Father had a file on his computer that mentioned a new synth that can slow its perception of time and see hit percentages. It is possible that they were making an enemy that canonicaly uses some version of vats. But threw out the idea when they couldn't make it interesting.
@@rolay7730 That’s completely plausible, I want to definitely look more into it.
@@Iron_Age This might be a bit of a stretch, but considering all the tech magic that already exist in fallout (and to fill some plot holes etc, lol), it shouldnt be too far off if every inhabitant/visitor in certain vaults could get instant access to a sort of wireless VATS function.
Wait, what? Pip-boy 2000 was on belt, not wrist held.
i always disliked the design of the Fallout 4 pip-boy, strangely enough, Fallout 76's is the best design wise.
the pip-boy should look like it would electrocute you if you took it in water
how does the 2000VI exist before the 2000
The 2000 was manufactured before the 2000VI pre war
@@Iron_Age but in the clips the dates are wrong the model 2000VI says 2105 the fallout 1 clip said 2162
@@theghost4593 because those are the dates of the game fallouts apocalypse starts in 2077 and then 76 takes place soon after followed by classic fallout. So the dates listed are the dates in the games not manufactured dates.
@@Krewton08 I see my mistake now I hope I can get out of this little curse this is the second time (very recently) my mind just couldn't compute
pip boy 2000 is not an L >:(
Not an L but just not as good as the other ones imo
You mean pit boy?
i think homey here is getting lore and gameplay mechanics crossed up lol
If only we have this instead of IPhones and Android 🤣
pip-boy basicly if smart watches invented in the 50s
instant downvote as soon as you mentioned taylor.
😂😂 Dude, if you're still level 50 in fall out 76 That's just puny, because I'm level 100 And four
Imagine bragging over your level in a game.. what are you, fucking 11 years old?
The 2000 Mark Six also has a Pip-Boy light.
2000 MkVI is an L? I quite liked it, it was aesthetically pleasing and actually made a fair bit of sense functionality wise, now yes it wasnt as streamlined as the mk 3000 and 3000B but it was still comparable and definitely better than the Bare CRT with a calculator Key pad and the slab of metal that came before it
