The Pip-Boy is one the coolest Fictional Tech and one thing I love about it in the Fallout 4 game is how immersive the UI is in the game.

If we're to look at this from a lore perspective, the Pip-Boy is capable of registering certain materials and living creatures, it makes sense that it could recognise the materials of an item or that the user quickly punches in some info and the Pip-Boy cross-references it.
i figure its function is to say "this is a __, it shoots __rounds it is in ___ condition"
From a programmer’s perspective, it definitely seems to have a database
I always figured the lore reason would be for people working in shops or warehouses to manage the inventory of their work space not what they have in their pockets.

The Pip-Pad mod for Fallout 4 makes has the little excerpt during some loading screens saying they were "found in a warehouse", and that "you may occasionally see some strange characters" and I never knew what it was referencing, now I know, thanks Norte!

You forgot to mention one thing about the pimp-boy: those that are in tune with the wastelands wild side (via the wild wasteland trait) swear they hear some swanky tunes and/or funky beats whenever they see the pimp-boy 3b

Man, I'd love to have a Pip-Boy of my own with all the capabilities of it in the Fallout games.
Personally I like the Pip-Boy 2000 MKVI from FO76, and the Pip-Boy 3000 MKIV from FO4. They just have the best look and best functions in the Fallout games.
I've thought about making one out of a raspberry pi but once I started looking into monitoring health metrics it became prohibitively expensive.
I pretty sure Bethesda made them where it is a shell and you put your phone inside and there is a screen built in so your normal phone light filters to green and there was a app...maybe I remeber watching a video about it
@@johnballentine6638 yeah that FO4 collectors edition. The app linked your console and let you use the pip boy without entering it in game. I've got it but playing with the app is super finicky and probably to worst way to play. There was a build your own kit too but it was just a display piece.

It’s good, but I wouldn’t appreciate having to have to wear a glove and use the dial on my hand.
Maybe the 3000 would last the longest, but in terms of user-friendliness, the 3000 mk4 would be my personal choice.

Another interesting feature about the Pip Boy 2000 MK VI. You can gain access to any terminal that's being used by someone else.
Its really cool how you can clearly see the progression and advances in the tech, they get smaller and more sleek and gain extra features, really nice continuity with the models too
I think the Fallout 76 pip-boy probably fits the retrofuturistic concept from the old games the best.

One of the most fun parts of the pip boy is that it still uses radio in the AM/FM frequency. Id imagine there are still ways to make a smart phone recieve a signal though headphones and the likes but you generally dont see that sort of radio anymore but theres been no effort to update it in game.
I know a lot of android phones still have FM tuners and you just plug headphones in as an antenna

I'd like to clarify that PIP-BOY 1.0 was always an internal prototype. They wanted a proof of concept and then whittle it down from there. 1.0 was built knowing it would never see the consumer.
(This is my speculation from my experience in the tech field. So, add some salt to that if you'd like.)

14:38 i was so bummed when Fallout 1 didn't have a note section, but then i got to start a dedicated Classic Fallout Notebook, and I do that with every game now instead of using the in game notes. Highly recommended; a small spiral notebook feels best imo

Just need a phone wrist mount. Sadly when I try looking you mostly find cheap chinese velcro. Finding a pipboy type thing that isnt ridiculously sized and with proper arm fitting will be difficult unless you find someone custom making them.

Fallout 76's Pip-Boy is the most faithful upgrade to the original Pip-Boys from FO1 and 2. That design is great.

You can also change the colors on the pip boy 3000 but it is from the game options and not a diegetic interface.
Pretty sure you can change the UI colour for all of them, however all of them are in the settings

9:35 I believe the reason the interior map is so clustered could be explained with VATS combined with the sonar for scanning environments has become too sensitive. This ofc would be somewhat intentional by the creators considering its supposed to help you construct/place buildings, robots, plants etc, without requiring previous experience from the user. Supposedly.
Now I dont have much experience with Fo76, but ill just assume they somehow avoided this problem in that version? Feel free to correct me on all this however.

The only question I have is, who’s making upgrades to each Pip-Boy? Is it the Vault Dwellers making advancements in technology through blueprints from RobCo and Vault Tec? Or is it RobCo who made all of them and just sent out different versions to different Vaults?
Lore-wise, it's supposed to be the latter. A vault stocked in 77 would have something alot more advanced than one in 75

Definitely prestocked for specific vaults. Also, the 3000 Mark IV wasn't given to any Dwellers, but belonged to a scientist staff member, so I guess there's a chance Mark IV was made for specialised use, thus explaining the little cord you use to connect to the Vault Door and Rob Co robots

So how, do you think, does the PIP Boy gather/display combat (VATS) data? Do you think it can somehow tap into your nervous system to gather sound & visual data, and send combat stats back to the wearer?

I feel like the 2000 and 3000 are two separate product lines then Successive models.
The 3000 is the business/industrial line while the 2000 is the personal device line. The 1000 might even exist as an economic line.
This is based primarily on the fact you receive 2000 variations from your status as a vault dweller or a past Vault dweller. The 3000 on the other hand belonged to a Vault-tec employee who we looted.
Its external connection line would be useful from an industrial side but unnecessary for personal use and probably cost quite a bit extra.
Just yesterday i was thinking which apps I could install in my wrist mounted cellphone to have somerhing similar to a pipboy.
I doubt the 1.0 made it past prototype stage, I imagine a scenario not unlike Steve Jobs' reaction to seeing the first iPod prototype, according to Former Apple employee Amit Chaudhary , which ended with Jobs dropping the iPod into an aquarium:
When engineers working on the very first iPod completed the prototype, they presented their work to Steve Jobs for his approval. Jobs played with the device, scrutinized it, weighed it in his hands, and promptly rejected it. It was too big.

In fact the Pipbiy 2000 doesnt seem to be wearable. My assumption is initial idea were for wearable computer but they just weren't able to make it small enough.
I think the pip boy 3000s not being able to be removed is a safety feature so it cant be removed without the owners consent, it can be removed, just with some difficulty
If I can have any pip boy, it would be the 2000 mark vi, to me it looks the best and I like how it is. Hope it returns again, or at least remade again as a mod like in fallout 4, and new Vegas.

Not official I know, but im pretty sure there's a mod for new vegas that adds diary entries written by the courier at certain points in the game, I don't clearly remember them, I just know they where quite fun to read through. Props to whoever made that mod

Fallout 76 has my favorite pipboy i mod it into new Vegas and 4 whenever I play a new playthrough

I have to say that even with all the hate fo4 has get (and I understand that hate with fo 76 also) those 2 games have my favourite pipe boy designs.
I really like the fallout 3 and New Vegas ones, they are beautiful, but I could never and I say never be fine with the gloves being removed from armors raudsuits space suit because the gloves of the pipboy 3000.
On the other hand I would like to see something like the promotional póster of fallout NV with the Ranger that has something made with leather wear as a pipboy, and that would be a nice place to fit a pip tab.
Would be nice for a new video game to search as minigame different models of pipbois to do different stuff like the model from fallout 4 to open abandoned vaults or start the engine (using the same animation ) of a partially working car or tank, or powering a bit your power armor but in contrast you have a cool down that dont allow you to use the pip boy interface in a while (so no fast travel,inventory or nothing you don't have keybid)
I think it would be a nice idea to make all pipboys work fordifferent specialist stuff but inside the same game.

you neglected to talk about 3000A glove, and the fact that pip boy 2000 was also wrist strapped according to fallout bible, however it didn't have an appearance in cgi custscenes
The 3000A glove isn't really anything to talk about, seeing how it's kinda useless and even ugly in game. However, the concept arts did show that initially it was used to store a similar cord/wire thing the Mark IV has
The vacuum tubes are exposed because tubes get hot and need air flow to cool them. The exposed wires are just dumb though.
The Pip-Boy 1.0 is probably a prototype and was never released to the public.

I haven't used a Pip-Boy since fallout 3. One of the first things I do on every fallout game is a modded out and replace it with the Pip pad or something equivalent.
I think it's clunky, ugly, the flashlight is terrible and it regularly ruins so many outfits. Sometimes I almost forget it exists if it wasn't so heavily featured in advertising
