Please check the same checklist when checking out from the hotel etc. Please go around your rooms and see if you still leave anything.
Take pictures of your IDs and important other documents. Make certified copies of your IDs.
Make sure that all your pockets and bags are in good condition and secured. None can easily pick pocket anything from them. I lost my drivers license somewhere between a food court and TSA, in Phoenix. I walked up once to the closest info booth and no one turned it in. Walked back to the food court, thinking I somehow dumped it in the trash or left it at the table. Since I also carried my passport card, I decided to use that at the TSA gate, instead of digging through the garbage.
As I was walking past the information booth again, the gentleman working there flagged me down, said he found something of mine and I would just have to provide my details on my drivers license. Got my drivers license back, so YAY! But, I also still carry my passport card, just in case. 😅

I once checked in my ID with my suitcase when I was 12 after I had presented it at the check-in counter (my dad didn't notice). It was a nightmare. I remember standing in front of those panoramic windows at the gate, watching three annoyed (rightfully so) men unloading every single suitcase until they found my little grey bag. It was a flight from Germany to the UK and only a year after 9/11 so everyone was on edge. To this day I check my ID and travel documents regularly on the day of the flight.

I had this actually issue one month ago. To clarify things:
European Citizen (German) flying in the EU Zone from Germany to Portugal.
My passport and my ID are expired, and still are, because you don't get a local appointment that easy.
I had online check-in, only hand luggage, first flight in the morning. After everybody boarded the plane, I went to the FA, and said, that I have this issue. I can provide my Driver's License and/or my Birth Certificate (I needed that to get my ID anyways). They checked it, and let me fly, because I was genuine and upfront.
On the flight back, they didn't even check ID's, just if your name is on the boarding list.
Also, normal debit cards don't work in the Air. Gotta be Mastercard/credit Card.
    *Sigh*
To sum it up, be honest, be upfront, be nice. nobody wants you miss your flight.

I would love to know what happens internationally.
In my instance I didn't lose my passport- I damaged it instead.
My route plan was from SFO to Japan to Hong Kong to Korea to Hong Kong go SFO.
Clumsy me washed and dried my passport the night of departure. I thought if the pages were intact and still legible it would be fine ( just a little crinkle).
So I went throught tsa from sfo. No issues. I went to Tokyo customs with no issues. I explained my story and they laughed. I went through Hong Kong with no issues.
My flight to south Korea was at 6:30am. They would not accept my passport because it water damaged. I argued how is it possible that 3 major airlines had no issue with it and a small airline carrier did. They spoke to their manager and they said no. Left at 9 am and was like freaking out.
Good thing I had family there. Had to cancel my SK reservations and book a hotel for HK. Was told to get my passport picture taken and schedule a meeting with the embassy.
TURNS OUT YOU CAN GET A EMERGENCY PASSPORT in less than a day (valid up to a year).
So basically you buy a new passport and they give you a emergency one and when you get home you finish the paperwork and they ship you a new passport.
Lesson of the day - always check what goes inside the washing machine.

We live in San Antonio. My son was going to fly with a friend to London to spend a month going to Acting classes at RADA and sight seeing. They found a flight out of Austin, which is about a 2 hour drive from San Antonio via a crazy interstate packed with 18 wheelers. When he made it to Austin with his friends parents, he noticed that he had left his passport at his friends parents house in the copy machine. This was about 2 and a half hours before his flight left.
My husband went over to the friends house, where the other son met him at the curb with the passport. He headed to Austin while I was at home calling him occasionally with traffic updates via hands free phone. He made it to the airport, where my son was waiting at the curb to grab the passport. An airport employee was him to help whisk him through security. He had about ten minutes to spare. What you do for your kids!! And a lesson well learned. 😅

So the first time I ever flew was for my grandpas memorial service/my introduction to the family (long story). At the time I didn’t have an ID. So I got one just in time for my flight, but it was a paper one because my real one wasn’t going to be here in time. I didn’t know that the airport was transitioning to no longer accept paper IDs. Luckily we got it sorted out and they allowed me through on good faith with additional screening. I was not taken to a separate room, it was done in the TSA line with everyone else. I was asked to partially strip- which was sort of my fault, I had no idea this would happen so I dress comfortably in sweat pants, tank top and a jacket and only had to remove my jacket, but I am a very busty woman despite my size so I startled the TSA guy leading me to my additional screening. I was patted down and X-rayed. My stuff was looked through and X-rayed. I had to tell the TSA lady that I was on my period and wearing a pad when I was being patted down.
Meanwhile the whole damn time my mom - who had already gone through her security checks without the additional screening - was off on the sidelines laughing her ass off and making fun of me WHILE RECORDING THE WHOLE THING! And she wonders why I don’t trust her to go to the doctors office with me? She makes fun of me whenever I have to get a damn shot and stresses me out.

Searched and asked everyone but it had vanished. Told my dad it would be alright to get through security, but wasn't sure how it would go in Vegas. He gets through security after a bunch of hassle and sits on a bench on the other side. My mom looks over at the next bench and says, "Isn't that your wallet?" It was! A guy just had it sitting next to him and claimed he "found it" and was going to "turn it into the gate agent". Makes total sense that he would carry it through security and not turn it into the check-in desk. 🙄

I once left my whole wristlet before flying. I left my car over at my brothers and had him drive me unloaded everything but my wristlet I didn’t carry a whole purse at the time. I had a boarding pass on my phone. They had to call homeland security and they asked me obscure details about my childhood and places near me growing up. They let me on after that.

In my country, for domestic fight, there is one simple solution : always have a photo/scanned ID on your phone. Show it to them. I'm usually very lazy to show my ID, and I just show the photo in my phone.

Plus, just be organized and don't be clumsy. Take pictures of your IDs and important other documents. Make certified copies of your IDs.
Make sure that all your pockets and bags are in good condition and secured. None can easily pick pocket anything from them. There should be a global biometric ID verification services that are widely accepted by all authorities globally. Ones can only give the fingerprint and face scan to be identified.

My middle name my mother completely made up and is unique, but my first and last name is so common there is literally a bread that has it. I feel safer with them confirming my middle name, but noooo....
