How to Read and Understand the Whole Bible

  • The first thing you should do to start reading and understanding the Bible well is get a Catholic Bible you know you will be inspired to read if you don’t have one already.
For beginners, start with the Gospels. Take fifteen to thirty minutes to read over a paragraph or a chapter. Lectio divina, or praying with Scripture, is a great way to make the most of this time. Read over the passage a few times. Ask God to speak to you through it. Use your imagination and put yourself in the scene and ask God to direct your thoughts.
Once you’ve read through the Gospels, try reading the whole Bible in a year. Or if you want to just read the story, follow The Great Adventure Bible Timeline which gives a reading plan for the fourteen narrative books of Scripture. Jeff Cavins’ Bible Timeline shows the cohesive story that ties together all of Scripture and highlights its main themes and covenants so you can get the big picture.
Because Scripture is the living Word of God, it can hit you differently depending on when in your life you read it:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
Jackie and Bobby also encourage you to memorize Scripture, so you can offer its words to others who need to hear them, and so you can recall them in moments of temptation.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly … ” (Colossians 3:16)
Most importantly, don’t let the thought of reading Scripture become daunting. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Remember what inspired St. Augustine to conversion: a few words he heard spoken by a child in a neighboring house, “tolle et lege” (pick up and read).

What's helped me stay consistent is doing a daily in-depth study to the daily readings of the mass! Since you don't have to choose which scriptures you'll be reading that day, it's much easier to make it a routine!

Savina Zúñiga there are daily readings for every Mass not just on Sundays. You can download an app like Living With Christ (in Canada - not sure if it’s available everywhere) or Laudate is another app for the daily readings and so much more.

Savina Zúñiga my husband and I use the Laudate app for the daily readings. Check it out! It has all kinds of cool stuff in it and you can even set up your own prayers in there. It also has two versions of the Bible and the Catechism, too.
If you do the daily readings every day, it takes two years. If you read just the Sunday readings, it takes three years to complete the Bible. Hope that helps!

The first time I read the Bible, I just read it straight through -- everything -- and I'll admit that I found it downright weird at times, but I trusted in God that whatever I found strange was right and good and made sense. The second time I read it, what I saw was God's sweetness, patience, love, and strong desire to have His people under his wing. Now I just read it over and over, and it grows more and more wonderful. Although I read straight through, and that worked for me, to a new reader, I would recommend reading from John to the end, then read the entire NT, then read the OT+NT. Grace and peace to you all through Jesus Christ.

It is beautifully made, with commentary from various saints, theologians, and Bishop Barron himself, in addition to artwork from Michelangelo, da Vinci, Van Gogh, and many others, that all serve to bring readers to a deeper understanding of the Scripture passages.

A few years ago I started all nights asking the Holy Spirit for his Word opening random the Bible writing down those phrases that moved me deeply and now I can’t fall asleep if I don’t read even just a verse. Later I found out it that what I was doing was a way of contemplation as you Jackie say! A beautiful and silent love talk with our Lord! This way of prayer has helped me to grow in knowledge of His Word (although needing to learn much more) and attending Holy Mass where if I’m not wrong we read the hole Bible in three years! Blessings and fraternal love from Argentina! Sorry for my English 🙈

I started reading the bible, using Ascension 's, which my sister gifted.. I started with the gospels, as was suggested by an internet search by a Catholic site. It took me a little over a year, reading every day. I'd read any where from 15 to 30 minutes. Now I've started over, and feel empty if I don't read every day. I find much comfort and peace while reading. I remember thinking why didn't I read this wonderful and blessed word while I was young. It is the best BOOK I've ever read! 💜

KJV for me thanks. I can relate to the Genesis to Leviticus problem, though I've managed to read through to Joshua at the moment. Yes, the Gospels are a great place to start. The more you read, the more you'll find small verses or even single sentences that stand out to you, to which you can relate,. In my case, I've remembered some, and thus can quote them, including their reference, at opportune times. It's also nice to be able to quote the Bible to any JWs who happen to stray onto your patch. I had some JWs knocking at my door a few years back, one of them said "no one has ever died with out sin", to which I immediately replied "Jesus did"...they had no comeback.....oh how good it felt to put them in their place ;)

The Bible is designed to read from Genesis to Revelation in order. If you jump to the Gospels, Jesus makes no sense, because you won't understand that He created the world, so He is the only one with the right to redeem us.

I started falling in love with the Bible by reading the Golden Book Bible Stories For Children like I would read fairy tales when I was 5 all the way through high school. And then in High School, even though I was attending Catholic Schools, an uncle who is mormon, gave us a picture Bible of the parables of Jesus and somewhere along the way, I was given a New Testament pocket edition of the Gideon Bible. Being the bookworm that I am, I devoured both Bibles and enjoyed it throughout the years until I commandeered my maternal grandma's GNT-TEV small sized Bible when she passed away in 2002. In 2003 (I was in college), using my grandma's GNT-TEV Catholic Bible, I decided that I'm ready to upgrade from Children's Bible Stories and that it's time for me to read the stories that never made it to the Children's Bible. So I read the Bible cover to cover from Genesis to Revelations and it took me roughly 3 years each round (1st round: 2003-2005; 2nd round: 2006-2008; 3rd round: 2010-2012; 4th round: 2013-2015). By the end of the 4th round reading my grandma's Bible, it was falling apart so I gave it to my mom in the hopes that she could get it rebound and use it for herself as apparently she didn't have a Catholic Bible and my mom being the first born, she could then pass it on to my sister, the first born and she could then pass it on to her son, etc. and I got myself my own GNT-TEV Catholic Bible and read that one cover to cover for the 5th round from 2016-2019. In 2020, still using my GNT-TEV Catholic Bible translation, I used the 3-month Ascension Bible Timeline reading plan. Now in 2021, I've decided to try a different translation and am using the Ignatius Bible RSV2CE ebook edition on my Kobo eReader and following Ascension/Fr. Mike Schmitz' Bible In A Year reading plan. I think what really helped me get through the more boring books while reading the Bible cover to cover was being so familiar with the Children's Bible stories so that it helped to encourage me to keep reading. Another thing that helped me a lot was the GNT-TEV translation itself because it is so easy to read and to understand, a Bible you can relax with. So far, I'm enjoying the RSV2CE translation and I'm reading a lot of good reviews on how the text of the New Catholic Bible (NCB) translation that Catholic Book Publishing Corp (CBPC) came out with in 2019 flows and reads really well and I'm just waiting for CBPC to come out with a Sunday Missal-sized NCB Bible so I can get my hands on it and retire my GNT-TEV Bible as it too is now falling apart. Or maybe stick to ebook formats to keep my Bibles from falling apart?

-Catholic Productions where Dr. Brant Pitre gives a good explanation of the Bible verses and it's right interpretation,
I think twice or thrice a week he uploads his excerpts.
-Bishop Barron's explanations of the verses and theological explanatons are too very good and revealing, sheds more light when I read any verse next time in that context.
    - Fr. Mike Schmitz and your videos whenever you'll teach or explain Bible verses. I read the Gospels and letters too, once only but didn't read them again. I have finished reading Proverbs multiple times, Ecclesiates,Book of Wisdom, Genesis and many others, I will begin re-reading them again. But I always prefer an explanation for the verses just so I don't misinterpret them or confuse it with some other context.

So true, Jackie! It is amazing how many new messages appear each time you read it. I stopped counting the number of times I have read the Bible from start to finish - although I do read the new testament probably 5 times for each 1 time of the old. But the old is also so important to understand the context of which Christ was talking - so I muster through it on occasion. :-) My latest journey is now making notes that I'll later categorize so when I need a reference to something I'll know where to find it - like my own personal index. :-). Memorizing just isn't possible with my old brain. :-)

Something that has been helping me; okay this going to sound weird, I wait for a number to pop into my head before my daily rosary. I read that chapter and meditate on it. The best part is every time I do this there is an answer to what I am going through at the moment! Then I sit and meditate a little while after pray and listen to what God has to say to me! I have been playing The Blessing prayer before every daily rosary. It brings me peace that I am praying for others during the virus, the violence and hatred in the world!

A good Bible commentary can make reading the Bible much easier. The Navarre commentaries are excellent. Try the one for Matthew and see if it doesn't open things up for you. You can get them on Amazon.

Thank you both so much for this! I'm a lifelong Catholic who has never read the Bible all the way through, and although I have begun to fall in love with my faith recently, I have procrastinated reading it just because it's so large and intimidating. This really helps me get a good reference for where to start and how to do it!

Jackie and Bobby, thank you for your great CZcams video on how to read and understand the whole Bible. To make a long story short, back in 1989, I was working with a Baptist fellow who had a chart with all the books and chapters of the Protestant Bible. I was very impressed with his Bible chart but felt it needed a calendar to help people read it completely through in a year. Although I am LDS and he is a Baptist, we were able to work together to convert his chart into a plan. Since then I have made reading plans for Catholics, Protestants, and Latter-day Saints. I agree with you that the New Testament is the best place to start. I also agree that the best Bible is one that someone will actually read, and I also encourage people to read different translations. Just divide the number of pages in your Bible by 365 and that will give you an idea of how many pages you need to read each day to complete it in one year. But I also tell people to not get wrapped around the axle and stress out if it takes longer than a year. In my 50+ years of reading the Bible, it has taken as little as four months to as long as three or four years. But I keep plugging away at it. Lastly, I look forward to reading the RSV because I have a Catholic friend who read 1 Corinthians 15: 29 from her Bible to me and it made perfect sense. God bless you and keep up the good work.

What helped me with reading the Bible in a year was to find a set time during the day and to make it an easy habit. For me, that was my commute to work! I also got a kindle version that already had the readings broken down day by day, so I never had to wonder how much I had to read--it was all laid out for me. It also really helped that the readings had paired Old and New Testament selections each day, so you could see the connections between the Old and New and not get as stuck (especially with some Old Testament books!). Happy reading!

I am about 10 days into reading every morning before I get out of bed. It has been such a wonderful and positive way to start my day. I found a copy of The Catholic Youth Bible from when I was in high school (I am now 23) and it has a few suggested reading plans. I am starting with a 28 day plan called 'A Walk Through the Bible', which includes many of the key stories in chronological order (typically 2-3 chapters a day). There are other plans I am looking forward to trying next, like 'The Justice of God', 'Women in the Bible' and 'Called by God'. This Bible also has some great notes and explanations of historical context and relating these stories to modern times.

I started doing the read the Bible in a year and what’s helped me is to break up the three readings between my day for a lot of reasons (i.e., digesting Scripture enough in prayer, scheduling-wise, and ensuring to bring my day back around to God). So I wake up and read the first reading as apart of my morning prayer, set an alarm for 3pm to read the Psalm, and the Gospel as my evening prayer to carry with me onto the next day. :)

I read the Bible most days in the early morning. In addition, my "tune up" is to read in a few devotionals before reading the Bible. I'm not too concerned about being on a timeline in terms of reading the Bible. Rather, I concentrate on whatever chapter I'm reading that day. I read the various passages presented in each chapter, imagining myself at the time of Jesus and from this discerning the meaning of the scripture. For me, the best part of this prayer time is that I record my thoughts about the scripture in an online journal. I can type faster than I can write, and besides, I can read what I type! I can't always read what I write, especially if I'm trying to get my thoughts into print. So, I type what I consider the inspired thoughts God is sharing with me as I attempt to draw meaning from my reading that day. In most all my writings I interpret meaning at the time of Jesus but also how this reading applies to our modern world and our preoccupation with the things of the world, often crowding Jesus out of our lives. Discerning these thoughts gives me what I consider God's direction for my day and for my life. This process for me has proved to be very beneficial in terms of my growth as a Catholic. It also prepares me to give testimony in life when the opportunity presents itself. For me, the "magic" here, for lack of a better term, is we cannot predict when we will have an opportunity to share our faith with others. That's the surprise! I feel my job is to be prepared enough and to be "awake" enough to life circumstances that present themselves and then to be prepared to share my faith with others. This mindset is the adventure of living as a Catholic Christian. God bless you all in all the ways He blesses all of us!

Hey Lauryn, not trying to be a bummer here and I have felt weird about this, but I want to say something about your profile pic. I clicked on your photo too see it larger (to see if my eyes were deceiving me, they were), and saw that you’re about as well covered and dressed as possible in your photo. At a glance at the tiny version though next to your comments, it looks as though you’re very inappropriately dressed. Now of course, it could be just me, but I thought I’d let you know, that by no fault, at all of your own, your photo shrunk down (to me) looks inappropriate, even though it in no way is. Of course it’s up to you what you do with your profile pic, I just thought I’d let you know.

I consider myself very bad at reading. It's hard for me to consistently read anything and to read a good amount. On the other hand, I have another problem where I might be midway through reading something, let's say John's gospel, then I hear a reading from the second letter to the Corinthians and suddenly I want to read that. I've read two books at the same time before because of it. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I have ADHD. 😅
I have scant advice, but I do recommend not letting too much time pass between reads, and focus on one thing at a time. Like I was reading a book one time and I was halfway through, and stopped for a few months and started reading another book. When I finished the later book, I came back to the previous and remembered very little. Oh, and if you aren't reading anything (and I recommend doing this after you read the Gospels), if you hear a reading that you like at Mass or anywhere, read that entire book. After I finish John's gospel, I will read Paul's letters to the Corinthians. A lot of verses really resonated with me from these letters.

The Douay Rheims is a direct translation from the Vulgate, the Vulgate is the original Bible at over 1,400 years old. Jerome translated the original manuscripts to form the Vulgate. Some of the original manuscripts were lost forever after the Vulgate was written so this Bible is the stop where other Bibles must reference from. And the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1946 affirms that the Books of the Old Testament contained in the Vulgate were the Deuterocanonical texts Jesus and the apostles referenced from.
