NOBODY expected this when it exploded around the globe : Blondie was punk and new wave, they fused those with disco and rap and hip hop?! 😮😮😮 Many firsts, and in my view their best track. For the record: Deb Harry made clear she did not consider this a “rap song” but an homage. It opened doors: the first “rap” played on rock stations and MTV.
Yes, the song does three musical shifts: from soft rock to rap to hard rock. Meanwhile, the title is a play on words: rap = being in romantic rapture; rap = rap music; rap = the Rapture (the end of the world). All in one song!
About the video: dancer William Barnes in the white suit and top hat) is the introductory and central figure. Barnes also choreographed the piece. Much of the video is a one-take scene of lead singer Debbie Harry dancing down the street, passing by graffiti artists, Uncle Sam, an Indigenous American, child ballet dancer and a goat. Fab 5 Freddy and graffiti artists Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat make cameo appearances. Basquiat was hired when rapper Grandmaster Flash did not show for the shoot. The UK 7" version of the song is used in the video.
Rap hit the mainstream with this
rap before rap was even a thing.....lol.....such an innovative song.....before its time.
Blondie didn't invent rap.
But she was the first to take it to #1
No, Debbie Harry and the guys were where we were at the time.
When I was your age all the Guys were in love with Debbie She's rocking today at 78
First female rap included record to get to number one in the USA and first rap music video to air on mtv.
Just to set things straight with the info of this song: "Blondie" is the name of the group NOT the lead singer. (That's Debbie Harry). This was released back in 1980. Yep! we had some pretty good music floating around in those days.
she's still rocking out..
Yes she JUST played Glastonbury.
This was the first rap I heard back in 1980/81, and the only one I liked too.
(Ok, there has been a few exceptions, but these were in my native language, not american.)
This was the first rap song on MTV and the first one that went no.1 on the US Billboard charts back then.
Blondie was way ahead of her times ,a certified classic !
The very first song to feature rap predominately that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has it's place in the history of hip hop music.
of course rap had been around for decades, but she popularized and helped make it more mainstream, brought it to the wider culture..
@@ericpeterson6766 No doubt whatsoever that Blondie pushed rap into the mainstream and for millions of teens in the USA this song was their first exposure to rap and the first song featuring rap to be played on MTV.
Around this time my fave bands were ABC, Blondie, Clash, Dire Straits and ELO. Going by initials, I guess . . .
See, this is what I was trying to tell you about. She is the reason why rap became an accepted form of music. She had to give the M-TV white audience a taste of what rap could be, she gave them a small taste and then it was accepted. She is the Queen of rap. Give her props when they are due!
Dude.
Back in late '79 i recall Sugar hill Gang's "Rappers Delight" getting exposed and then late 1980 'Rapture" by Blondie that exploded this kind of sound in a wider audience.'Autoamerican" album is such a fave of mines. So diverse but multicolourful.
They had 3 #1 hits in a row: The Tide is High, Rapture, and Call Me.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee If Debbie co-wrote and sang the song then that's not in name only, that's a collaboration between the band and Moroder.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Why does it matter how many were in the band. She represented Blondie and she took part in the collaboration for Blondie. She didn't collaborate with Moroder as a solo artist.
The Album Version has another verse after the Rap! but the Guitar solo is different! First U.S Number 1 to have Rap Lyrics!
This video was the game changer. Rap videos were not aired on MTV until this video came out. This video was so big MTV had to play this video.
I also love that it cost about $20 to make this video😅 The downtown scene really was like this back then. That’s Basquiat painting in the background.
Another gift from the 80's. Blondie was a Bunny at the New York Playboy club. ✌️
Debbie Harry exuded sexiness without even trying.
Your face at the 4:25 mark in your video!!! priceless. 🤣😂🤣
This seemed almost like a dream sequence.
Dude, it was fun watching your face while you reacted to this one! Thanks. Blondie never connected to one particular genre, which is why they easily swayed from the new wave-rap mix of “Rapture” to the Caribbean flash of “The Tide is High.” You can put me down for T-shirt. Don't forget to check out Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation1814' Video...Really cool dancing in that.
Its cool you like Blondie..I'll buy your T Shirt now. :)
Can't deny it. This is the coolest song.
She got good songs.like shayla. Heart of glass.one way or another
Hanging on the telephone is good.
You are the most expressive reactor I've seen. It makes for such great reactions! 👍👍
I dig Blondie and still have several Blondie albums. ... I love Debbie Harry's voice, the funky yet still ROCKIN' guitars, and their VIRTUOSO drummer, Clem Burke. A big talent pool in this band made for some very diverse yet still very relatable hits. You may also enjoy some good TALKING HEADS, (from the same era), such as PSYCHO KILLER, TAKE ME TO THE RIVER, BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE, SWAMP, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, ROAD TO NOWHERE.
My favorite song from Blondie is Dreaming. Would love to see a reaction to that song.
Great song. Thanks for your reaction, you looked mesmerised just like many others who tuned into the launch of MTV and watched this video. Blondie were ahead of their time and were amazing and very talented! 👍 I love the fact that the song is about an alien. 👽
This came out in early 1981 in the UK Bro
Love it!!
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎
Didn't I tell you 🤗 😊 🙂
Good reaction Chase! I'd love to see your reaction to "Dub be good to me" by Beats featuring Lindi Layton 🙂
Your expectation of what the song might be about was wayyyyyy off. 🤣
Hey, could you please react to Linda Ronstadt? She is on the same level as Karen Carpenter. Amazing singer with a powerful voice, who sang just about every style - pop, rock, country, folk, blues, new wave, old standards, light opera, Latin/mariachi. Try her song tracks of my tears
, the official video
You make me laughj!
Love your reactions!
Your face is so expressive while you watch!
hi, chase! may i recommend 'once upon a time in the west' by a 12yo patricia janeckova! if you think this is not right, try 'meine lippen' from a 2016 new year concert, when she was 17! sadly, patricia died last year with breast cancer aged just 25!!
Im real glad it wasnt about the fairy tale Christian rapture.
I know you're not done with ABBA...
NEW ABBA REACTION JUST DROPPED!
Please do some Linda Ronstadt! Try her song Desperado (studio version) or Tracks of My Tears
Not quite Biblical, more like alien invasion... but I've loved it for 44 years and I still love it! 🚗🍺🎸
RAP-Ture...and now he only eats guitars.
well,... yes.... it is SORT OF about the return of Christ.
And did you see the women dressed in traditional Voodoo garb (all white) so lots of the spiritual here.
Why did my comment get deleted?
I said thank you for the reaction and would be cool if you would react to 2 Unlimited and their songs/music video Real Thing & No One.
I'm sure you gonna enjoy them.
Thank you cheers ✨

No strange thing at all....but strange indeed. Some 'unexplained" Utube 'glitsch".It has happened to me too several times and imagine i'm usually very careful and civil/no swearing in ma comments\.I always check them after posting and even save them before posting so to re-post sometime later on.Weird and really annoying, isn't it.
This teen doesn't know the difference between Debbie Harry and blondie do your research you have no music knowledge at all
Harsh. Chillax dude. Cut him a break. This music is probably older than his parents. He's willing to listen and learn. And let's be real. Though Blondie is technically the name of the band, there's not a lot of blonde hair in that group - especially platinum blonde, so is it such a stretch to jump to the conclusion that she's Blondie - even though it's from a bottle? This is a reaction channel, so there's an assumption that it's something he's just discovering.
@@JayScott777 His parents would be would be around my age so they know who blondie be
I gather your'e not Gen X how bloody typical lack of knowledge
Kid you got dirt below your nose, stay in school and don't do drugs!
