The High wheeler bycicle as mentioned is really called a Penny farthing because it was designed to look like a old penny (on the front wheel) & a farthing on the rear wheel. This was in the U.K as far as as I am aware of.Yes it could have had another name or two in other countries. Not that it was in many other countries though. Due to those who could or tried to ride these things. ( NOT! exactly the easiest of things to ride.) 😮 & NO I haven't tried myself 😁
It wasn't designed to look like a penny and a farthing, it had a large front wheel because gears and chains were either not technically possible or prohibitively expensive/complex at the time. A larger wheel diameter is like having a longer gear.
Interesting that early bike lacked a seat tube (a setup some "radical" modern designs are returning to). Perhaps the curvy frame tubes flexed enough to provide a sort of suspension for the rough roads then? Also it appears to have been a "fixie" with no rear brake. Probably relying on your legs to brake the rear wheel, and that scary "shoe" thingy dragging on the front tire tread for a front brake.

I agree with you. unfortunately the new mayor of the city is erasing some bicycle paths and the press has come the idea that the bicycle is enemy of the traffic. cyclists are resisting this oppression by making videos, photos, and creating content to prove the use of the bicycle as a means of transport

I cannot imagine that bike messengers were a thing when Penny Farthing bikes were what they rode! Like a massive trike with a wheel missing! As braking was the front wheel, I can imagine why they invented helmets too. Doing a face plant from up there would be nasty...hell, the one I had at 30mph was nasty enough and I didn't wake for 35 min. and then thought I lost a package when I couldn't find it after asking the guy who brought me in off the road for a signature. Nice of them to not leave me on the road I thought after getting my face stitched a bit. I was very embarrassed when I couldn't remember my name and address, but it came back. This was 34 years ago, and I wore one of the old sweaty helmets when skid lids were common.... sure was a good move.

Last week I got a group of three going side by side and occupying the whole bike lane in Parque das Nações... none moved away and I ended up halting and point at them to the police who was a couple of meters from me (during eurovision, there was police everywhere) and they just shrugged. What that group did warrants a fine (10 to 50 euros if not mistaken - can someone confirm? -, because there's a sidewalk right next to it, and another on the other side of the road) and yet the police just shrugged. On the other hand, as a pedestrian, I almost got hit by a bike in Gare do Oriente today, and there's absolutely no bike lane where I was (the overpass on the train station, upper floor). Not only that isn't a bike lane (or any lane, it's as if it was the inside of a building) as he wasn't 10 years old or younger, for sure.

Tuk-Tuk drivers are the worst in Lisbon right now, like the very bottom of the barrel. I've witnessed this past month at least 3 situation that involved Tuk-Tuk drivers insulting each other, shouting in the middle of the streets while tourists and pedestrians watched and the amount of times they disregard traffic laws is actually scary. I guess it's a mandatory part of your CV to be an asshole if you want to drive one of those things :s
Hey Miguel, let me ask you something. I've just started cycling and i'm kinda pissed at the fact that i get so tired on my rides that i can't even enjoy it, i mean, i like to chalenge myself, and the ride DOES make me feel good but not the way i wanted, i was wondering if that happens because i'm not used to riding a bike for more than 10 minutes or if it's because i'm actually forcing myself too much, like going too fast or passing through rough places. Well, actually i guess i just answered for myself. LOL.
Your problem is new to biking and your over doing it, i had the same problem myself which turned into really painful knees due to too much overuse of hard gears and incorrect bike fit till i backed off and worked on my problems. The key is to take it slow, use an easy gear, don't ride for too long and when your comfortable over time you can go longer distances, use harder gears and can easy manage over 50 miles+ without any problem other than maybe a sore bum haha. If you force yourself to do too much it can injure you, give you problems, make you more tired and in the end you don't enjoy riding and it becomes nothing but hard painful work and there isn't any pleasure in doing it. Just enjoy a slow steady pace and short distances like an hour or less ride to start with. You will soon to start enjoying it more as you get better. :)

where I live everyone just uses bike lanes as sidewalks, and police is cool with it. Thats why I ignore them and just ride in traffic.

There should be no bike lanes on the sidewalk. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. But bicycles should be allowed on sidewalk, provided they give way to pedestrians.

Estes ciclistas bonecos que passam a malta parada nos semáforos e depois andam a velocidades ridículas por isso nem se percebe qual é a pressa só tem a mania que são superiores aos outros. Também já me aconteceu quando ia de Gira e a pessoa passou a frente de 3 pessoas. Ia na velocidade 2 e foi ultrapassada na ciclovia logo a seguir por isso é só porque é boneco ...
E depois para chegares a outro semafaro e seres ultrapassado pela x4. Ai que sensação. Deal with it.

Tuk-Tuk drivers are the worst in Lisbon right now, like the very bottom of the barrel. I've witnessed this past month at least 3 situation that involved Tuk-Tuk drivers insulting each other, shouting in the middle of the streets while tourists and pedestrians watched and the amount of times they disregard traffic laws is actually scary. I guess it's a mandatory part of your CV to be an asshole if you want to drive one of those things :s
I've experienced all types of situations with them, some good and some bad.
Hey Miguel, let me ask you something. I've just started cycling and i'm kinda pissed at the fact that i get so tired on my rides that i can't even enjoy it, i mean, i like to chalenge myself, and the ride DOES make me feel good but not the way i wanted, i was wondering if that happens because i'm not used to riding a bike for more than 10 minutes or if it's because i'm actually forcing myself too much, like going too fast or passing through rough places. Well, actually i guess i just answered for myself. LOL.
Your problem is new to biking and your over doing it, i had the same problem myself which turned into really painful knees due to too much overuse of hard gears and incorrect bike fit till i backed off and worked on my problems. The key is to take it slow, use an easy gear, don't ride for too long and when your comfortable over time you can go longer distances, use harder gears and can easy manage over 50 miles+ without any problem other than maybe a sore bum haha.
If you force yourself to do too much it can injure you, give you problems, make you more tired and in the end you don't enjoy riding and it becomes nothing but hard painful work and there isn't any pleasure in doing it. Just enjoy a slow steady pace and short distances like an hour or less ride to start with.
You will soon to start enjoying it more as you get better. :)
