Fix Bright Spots on LG LED Television (LCD TV with LED Backlighting)

  • LG LCD TV screens may develop 1 or more bright spots after a few years. This will appear as white circles and be most noticeable when viewing brighter scenes. The white spots are caused by clear plastic circular lenses inside the screen coming loose. I believe these lenses are used to distribute the light evenly across the screen and they come loose because the quality of glue used to hold them in place is not very good.
If you have a bit of technical skill, a screwdriver set and good quality glue you can fix this problem yourself. It's a fairly time consuming process as there are many screws and several layers that need removing to get to the lenses.
Here's how you fix the white spot problem. Make sure you switch the power off and unplug all cables before you do anything else. Attempt it at your own risk and don't be sad if your TV doesn't work afterwards. Good luck!
Update: Thanks for all of the comments and subscriptions. Here is some additional information based on feedback in the comments:
    1. When you disassemble your TV, make sure you are careful and note how components are ordered. There are several sheets (mostly white) before you get to the lenses/reflectors. These sheets need to go back in the correct order so try not to separate them. You may like to photograph each stage as you go so you can refer to the photos when it's time to reassemble.
    2. The most common questions in the comments are about glue. I used Tarzan's Grip but others have had success with different glues. As long as they are strong glues that dry clear you shouldn't have a problem. Here are other glue suggestions - Clear Gorilla glue, Super glue, Krazy glue, E6000, T6000, B7000.
    3. It was commented that you can use clear adhesive tape instead of glue to hold the lenses in place. Just make sure it is strong tape that will stay clear over time. Crystal Clear Gorilla tape was recommended and I'm sure there are similar strong tapes if you do your research.
    4. Some people mention keeping the components clean. I did not need to clean mine but you could use a soft cloth to remove dust from the screen and sheets if required. There was also mention of using screen cleaner on the screen.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I thought I was about to be in the market for a new TV......but, with your video, I spent $1.79 on a tube of super glue, a couple of hours of my time on a rainy Sunday and viola! TV is back with no more bright spots! Well done, sir!

Thanks for the video! My son and I just did the repair on his 42LF5600. It has 32 lenses, and EVERY SINGLE ONE had fallen off. We did the repair using clear gorilla clue. It is much much better! We still have one somewhat bright spot, and another slightly dim spot. Reading the many comments below, it's possible that we didn't align two of the lenses perfectly, or perhaps used a little bit too much glue on those. But this is so much better than the 4 by 8 grid of bright spots that we had at the start.

@@westozexplorers1885 no problem! One quick question though, I notice on some white screens I can still see the white marks slightly (even though the diffuser hasn't dropped). Is this because I put the white boards / perspex in wrong order or the light "burned" it in?

A great help. I have a 60 inch LG with heaps of spots. Successfully repaired it with your instructions with a small difference. I didn’t need to unplug the ribbon cables from the circuit board. At step 7 I lifted the TV onto its side, removed the border frame, then put the TV on its back to continue the disassembly. I used Gorilla glue and left it to cure 24 hours. All back together and no more spots. Thanks again.

Very good instruction. I have just noticed one spot yesterday (Jan 3) in the upper left of my Samsung TV. I have had it for about 4 trouble free years. So I will be trying this as soon as I can. I think another Very Important Step to include is to use a soft cloth to remove any dust/ lint from the White "sheets" as you replace them - ensuring you put them back in correct order (usually about 3 or 4 white ones) then the darker one you see when you look at the screen. I will likely re-glue all of the lenses so I hopefully wont have to do this again..... Another hint as well, a small scratch on one of the white sheets can cause a white spot on the screen as well, you can clean these up with a small dob of toothpaste on a cotton bud, then clean up with the normal screen cleaner liquid, ensuring to dry the sheet off before you re-assemble the TV.

thanks. Great vid. My LG TV (slightly different model) had 19 white spots so I decided to try to fix. When I got to the reflectors, even the ones still on just came off with a tiny touch. So really looking forward to a fixed TV.
However, in putting it back together, somehow we managed to crack the screen. must have been trying to fit the outer cover or something. So now TV doesn't work at all. :(

Thanks so much for your tutorial. With yours and one by Subodh Soni, I was able to repair my LG 42LB6500 with this exact same problem, but instead of glue, I used Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape. I thought I'd mention the tape in case anyone else would like to know and use that method instead. I'm not sure if this tape is available in other countries (I'm in Australia). I chose this tape as I did quite a bit of research into a clear tape that could withstand heat and not yellow and that held a tough long lasting grip. I did not ever want to repair this problem ever again! I picked the tape up at Bunnings for $16.80.
The reason I had to use your tutorial with the other was because I couldn't remember the order of the white sheets. I had the flimsy thinner ones fortunately in order but I wasn't sure if the thicker piece of what looked like frosted perspex, went on the top or the bottom of those sheets. Fortunately in Subodh's video, it shows him removing these in more detail and I was able to work it out. Also, I used his method to remove the lcd panel which was using suction cups. I just didn't trust myself doing it your way!
Thanks so much again and best regards from Australia.

The repair using the Gorilla tape went brilliantly. I didn't need to wait for the glue to cure so I could put it back together immediately.
Also, your video in comparison to his was much easier to watch. His made me feel seasick there was so much movement!

As you will see near the end of the video you remove the 'flexable dark' screen which is really a flexible PCB. On my 2014, yup 10 years old the screen was brittle and internally my screen broken into fragments when I gently removed it. Moral of story, a new 50 inch LG is $300ish, so you might just replace the TV. However, it's awesome to see how its made.

just finished trying to fix my 42". about 90-95% successful. some notes:
for the speakers I just unclipped the wires at the speaker - very easy.
when it comes to unclipping the plastic frame that holds plastic sheets to the illumination panel I recommend having some soft clothes to use as wedges, to keep the frame from re-clipping as you work your way around.
put the glue in the hole, then add the lens and seat it well. I used cragl, and two of the lenses didn't seat well, so I did it again, but I didn't leave enough time to set and I think one came loose again. I'm not going through all this again for one lens. some of the lenses are a bit out of alignment (not seated properly) so there is a small bright spot effect - enough to be annoying but this will be my "beater" tv.
I was most nervous about reclipping the two ribbon cables that get the picture to the screen, but that worked out fine - the alignment was actually very easy.
I organized all my screws in an egg container, and a small magnet can be handy to wrangle the screws.
and between your steps 6 and 7 you don't really explain what to do with the long, thin boards along the bottom edge after you freed them. I just let them hang and was careful
I'm proud of myself for trying it. a bit sad it's "not perfect" after all the effort. but it's better than it was.
in the end, thanks for your instruction. I'm glad I got off my ass and just did it. good luck to all.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I had 5 bright spots in the centre of the screen. I dismantled everything successfully and removed every lense as suggested. Just a word of advice. Don’t use too much gorilla glue as any overspill shows up white when the tv is put back together. In hindsight I wish I had used a thinner glue like superglue. Be careful you don’t put the screen back the wrong way round like I did.I couldn’t understand why the ribbons didn’t line back up correctly. I have a little white triangular bit with all straight fine coloured lines in the top right hand corner. I may have damaged the screen or I’ve seen on here that I may not have aligned the ribbons back properly in their 2 connectors. All in all I’m very pleased with the results and as I only use it in my holiday home I won’t be forking out another 450 euros for a replacement. Thanks again.

A point that might save someone from killing their TV. if you're wearing ANY synthetic fibre clothing at all, natural body movement can generate surprising voltage figures in static charges. If so, delicate electronics can be snuffed right out if your static charge discharges via the TV circuitry. Tiny chips especially can be very, very voltage-sensitive. To get around this possibility you can do one - or more! of three things. 1. wear thin plastic gloves. or pull plastic bags over your hands, secure them on your forearms with maybe tape or rubber bands. 2. connect yourself to a known earth point like maybe your central heating radiator. 3. wear only cotton fibre clothing. That doesn't generate static. (That's what I'd do myself)
It would be a real shame if after doing this job so carefully you then find your tv won't start, or loses tune or some such electronic problem because you weren't aware of the above?

Thanks for the comment. I hope it keeps working for you but I'd also like to know if you could fix it in 30 mins, that'd be extremely impressive!

@@westozexplorers1885 11 months later several lens have dropped and now nine light spot are happily decorating my tv... not sure half an hour could be enough to fix all of them. Of course I'd need a better glue... or maybe a brand new smart tv ...LOL

Wonderful... as a matter of fact I found your video at the request of a friend to fix their LCD.
Appreciate the clear instruction... good clean fun.

Thanks to you I won't have an excuse to buy a new 4K TV for a while longer. The problem is I still see some small light difference where the LEDs are. Not sure if it's because they're not 100% aligned anymore or because I know where they are and know what to look for now. Anyways. Very helpful video. And to LG, USE A DIFFERENT GLUE!

Thanks for the comment. That's good, save your money a bit longer then TVs will be better and/or cheaper when you really need to buy a new one. I do see some faint spots on mine too where the lenses are but only on bright scenes. I think it could be to do with the glue or maybe some dirt/dust

@@westozexplorers1885 The funny thing is Some spots are on the lenses I didn't re-glue, but I did yanked on them to see if they would fall off (some did) I might have bent it ever so slightly by doing that. Unless it's a full white screen with not texture, it's really hard to see, and it's much better than huge spotlights in the middle of the image. Thanks again for posting this!

@@victorlazaro6331 Probably if the lenses aren't sitting flush you would get bright spots. I know before I attempted fixing mine the bright spots started when the lenses were in place but starting to come loose. I decided to pull out and re-glue all of mine just because I figured the other ones would come loose at some stage.

ITS A PROBLEM!!! Got 2 LG TVs (at the same time from the same location) made in June and October 2014. 42" had a broken screen took it apart to sell the boards and opened it up 2C why it was rattling (had an idea) and almost ALL the lenses had fallen off. Went to pop off a lens and it took almost ZERO EFFORT, these lenses will probably fall off on their own over time. The 50" is PERFECT except for bright spots which I had NEVER seen before but after watching this video, now I know why, THANKS!!!! I saw that these lenses had different numbers on them, WONDER if they are intended for different locations on the screen? Person probably had the problem occur next on their 42" (Manf. October), punched the screen, & tossed them both. 🤬

Thanks for the detailed comment. Didn't notice different numbers on the lenses on my screen. It would be pretty annoying to have 2 screens with the same problem and not knowing the cause or that it could be fixed

Tip: Had difficulty in getting the panels to align when placing the main LED panel on top of the LCD image panel. When not aligned properly, the screws don't go in easily and, in my case, there was an image issue (white line at the top of the screen). Had to place the LCD image panel onto the main LED panel to get everything to line up correctly. Thanks!

Appreciate it for explaining step by step in the video. Im a very fast learner and I’m confident on fixing my LG, that appears to have 10 spots, I ben having for 5 years. I’m also going with a high grade tape. Hopefully next 5 years I’ll be at it again. I also agree with someone on the glue part if they fall out again you will not be able to use them again or will not work right because of the glue.
