- I remove some of the bottom components on my GE dishwasher to show how to do some basic maintenance. This is useful to see if there is anything blocking any ports on your dishwasher, to check how clean the filter is, and to access parts to clean them (some can get pretty grimy over time!).

Thank you so much. The maintenance men at my apartment looked at me like I was stupid when I told them the dishwasher wouldn't drain and was clogged. They literally spent 5 minutes in my apartment, started my dishwasher, and said "see? It turns on. Nothing is wrong with it." They didn't even stay to see if it was actually draining (it wasn't) and didn't come back the second, third, and fourth time I called.
So, thank you for this. Turns out I'm not the stupid one here.

Oh my goodness I just took everything apart for the first time in about 15yrs of living here. Renter. Broke. As a joke. I’ve told my landlord there was a problem. The dishes are stinky. I finally took it apart and oh my God it’s a miracle I am alive. It’s a miracle my husband and I and our cats are alive. Well honestly we had two cats die I’m not kidding. The mold was so sick. It’s insane. I mean the filter looked like something out of lord of the rings like Mordor terrible terrible I cannot believe I don’t have legionnaires disease.

@once.upon.a.time. My maintenance guy was here in my apartment yesterday. I had removed the propeller. I didn't have the quarter inch tool to take it further.
Why did he tell me 'it's working fine. Filter is clean'. He couldn't possibly see past what I had removed. So today he didn't come back after my leaving message with office. Tomorrow, I will go to maintenance and see if they have that tool, borrow it and do it myself!
Shame on GE for making it so difficult to change the filter! I say there is absolutely no way someone can figure it out without your video.
Yup and even with this video it’s a 50/50 hour gonna break the clip like we just did. This thing was made to sell more parts.

@@I_am_Jawad Don't replace it. You have to take the whole thing apart and spend $90 on a new lower tube. Just thread a set screw into the lower tube to hold the spray arm. Use a stainless screw.
Thank You Thank You Thank You! Renter here, with a less than enthusiastic building maintenance. After seeing just how nasty the garbage disposal's rubber guard was, and pulling out a wig full of hair from the bathroom sink drain (the apartment looked clean on the surface) - I just knew the dishwasher hadn't been maintained. I just couldn't figure out how to remove the center and back pieces. Your video came to my rescue. It was so so bad - just coated with black gunk. Thank you again!

BIG kudos to you for posting this exceptionally helpful video. Why in the world would GE make it so blasted complicated to clean out a simple filter? Other makers have it very easy to access, remove, clean, and put back in. Simple, quick, clean and done. No nonsense like this model. Gracious. Oh, and if you don't get it cleaned out often enough? Yeah, water ALL OVER YOUR FLOOR QUICKLY.
Also, I will quote a fellow viewer/commenter (Le Gras)who four years ago wrote the following VERY relevant and important points to note:
"Great video. I have referenced it a few times in my annual preventative maintenance. I would suggest to you that breaking the tab is a common issue and it is less likely to break if you use a pair of pliers to pull the plastic piece out rather than using a screw driver to pry it. Also, if anyone has ever broken a glass in their dishwasher, sticking your fingers into the drainage filter isn't great. Better to use a turkey baster to draw the water out so you can get a visual of anything that is stuck in there."

This has been a lifesaver. I’ve sworn since we moved into our apartment at the end of September that the dishes smelled a little off. And today they’ve smelled the worst by far. I’ve been searching the internet for manuals and I’m so glad this is still up.

I am so indescribably grateful to you for creating this video! I'm now in a rental with this dishwasher and have tried everything I could find online to clean it(to no avail) without removing the trap because I couldn't find a guide to remove it. All I need now is a tutorial for removing stubborn, black(mold?) from that reservoir...it clearly hasn't been cleaned in years and had a straw IN the trap from a previous renter 😅
I believe the straw is supposed to be there. was it clear and hard plastic???? there's one in mine too!

If you are worried about breaking the tab, or have broken the tab you can easily fix the problem by drilling out the small screw hole at the front that holds the ring and putting in a slighty longer machine screw. This will hold the sprayer in place and last much longer than the cheap plastic clip.
About how long a screw?
@@markstallins4603 After accidentally breaking the retainer tab that you are supposed to pry back to remove the spray arm for cleaning (terrible design), I was looking for a solution to this problem. Thanks Jon for this idea. I put in a longer screw yesterday and hope it will solve the problem. I replaced the 1/4" hex head machine screw (3/4" long) with a 5/16" hex head stainless steel machine screw (1" long). That protrusion of a 1/4" should hold the spray arm in place while letting it spin freely in use.

I noticed that after a few washes that the one protruding machine screw I installed wasn't holding the spray arm down well enough to allow the water pressure to clean the dishes properly. I had to add 2 or 3 more screws that were perfectly placed just above the lip of the spray arm. That allowed the full water pressure to force the center telescopic cone part to rise all the way and spray all the water on the dishes. Obviously, I could not watch this happening, but that's what I figured was happening because now the dishes are much cleaner. All this to say: Thanks so much to HM Videos! I would not have been able to even start the repair were it not for those instructions.
I watched this video years ago when I was having a problem with my dw not draining. Then today I got to the point where I couldn't remember how to remove the propeller and had to find this video again! I knew there was a trick to it, but just couldn't remember! Now I have this video saved so I won't have to watch the beginnings of so many video's to figure out they are all wrong for my model! So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! This is twice you've saved me from pulling all my hair out! Thank you!
Thank you. This is what I have in my rental, and maintenance is sick. I can't standing the smell of 4 day old standing water, so this helped me find that tab.
Thank you very much, without your film I would not be able to remove the filter. After pressing on the tab with a small flat screwdriver it came off very easy. After cleaning our dishwasher started to work (we didn't run it for a while, since use it like a dish dryer-storage). But here a thing I want to mention: in the film at 2:10 one can see a yellow rubber boot. I think the dishwasher wouldn't run normally if I wouldn't notice that it is sitting like 1/2" higher than in the film. There is a small hole in that boot, I think it helps the water circulate through the filter. So I pulled it down, so it fits the opening in a plastic cylinder. Actually I thought it is a part of the filter, since it came off together with it. Just wanted to mention this detail. Also inside of the central cylinder there is a small metal washer, be sure to remove it before using the shop-vac (I cleaned with a small brush and discovered it). Probably it is not so essential part, but it is there for some reason. This method of cleaning makes the dishwasher just sparkling clean.

Thank you for this video. I'm a little bit surprised that they are still making and selling dishwashers that are such a pain to clean. When I lived in Germany we had a dishwasher, it was my first time having one in my house to be honest, and the filter was super easy to take apart and clean. no tools were necessary all I had to do was pop the pieces off and rinse them out. I was looking around for a while for where I could pop the lid off the filter! The user manual was not at all helpful. Lol now I just need to find the right tools for the job.

Thanks for this video. I followed it and was able to clean out a lot of calcium deposits that was clogging the filter and causing an inch of water to collect at the bottom. Now, all is working great and the water drains as it should.
I first used a wet/dry vacuum to suck out all the water that had collected at the bottom. Removing the sprayer was fairly easy: I just followed his instructions of using a flat head screw driver and pushing gently towards the back. The part below the sprayer is a bit difficult to remove, since you can’t see what you’re doing and have to feel around. It took me a while to figure it out. I suggest you use a small camera to take a photo from the top or use a mirror to see how the tab holds the circular part in place. Then, you’ll know how to push the circular part and the tab to unlock them. This might help with not breaking the tab. I was able to do it using just my index or middle finger to gently push the tab. Remember the key thing here is push gently. If it’s not coming out when pushing gently, then you’re probably doing the wrong thing, so don’t push harder, else you might break it.
Here in 2023 I woke up to water outside the dishwasher. Thankfully I had same washer model and this helped! Thanks for making the video.
Same goes for me! I had no clue on how the sprayer came, or even that to needed to. I had been hung up on taking out the plastic grating assembly, ( which , as this video points out, wont come until until the sprayer and the assembly under it is removed.

I used a shop vac to suck up all the crud out if the hole, and I sucked a round ball out if the tube next to it, so make sure you don't lose the ball and that you put it back in there.

OMG this video is a life saver. I got all the screws off but couldn't figure out how to get the top parts off. I have a ADW1100NWW and couldn't find anything in the manual about any of this. I retched when I found what was living in my dishwasher!!! I rent and can't depend on the building management to do stuff like this. Thank you thank you!

Fantastic video. I just moved into a new house and noticed that when I ran the dishwasher, it smelled like Sulfur. Well this video helped me prove that no one had cleaned my dish washer since it was first installed... full on fungal colony had developed and massive amounts of mineral build-up.

Thank the christ this video is still up and available! I had no idea there was even such a thing as cleaning your dishwasher. Our GE dishwasher was already installed when we bought our house 12 years ago, and over the past year or so, wasn't getting things very clean. The amount of gunk I was able to clean off was unbelievable! Helpful hint: I was able to un-screw the bolts without having to take off the arm. I just knew I would break the clip if I tried to remove the arm, so I just reached over it to unscrew the bolts. Thanks again!

But the round filter/screen is under the arm. I tried to avoid removing the sprayer arm in fear of breaking the dreaded tab, but luckily it didn't break. Also even after removing the 2 nuts, the cage/cover for the sump wouldn't "easily" lift right off like in the video, it wouldn't budge without removing the arm then the round filter. Success!
Thank god this is still here. We have looked literally EVERYWHERE to try and find even where the filter was and this video is a thing of divine light.
My husband and I just cleaned out our dishwasher for the first time. It's not this exact model, but the components are all the same. The maintenance instructions we printed out for it didn't give any information for removing the components, so thank you for posting this video. It walked us through the process perfectly!

every so of the my wife would complain of an odor coming from the dishwasher and I would always find a small pool of water remaining in the drain area. I was able to remove the components before, but the question always came up as, why is there a small amount of water in there? Now I know it's to keep the parts from drying out. You save me hours of removing parts and cleaning the drainage line. Thanks so much for posting this video!

thank you thank you thank you!! My dishwasher wasn't working right and by following this tutorial I found that the little rubber piece that connects to the round filter was not connected properly. Cleaned everything, reconnected, and now it's working GREAT!

Wow! I haven't used my dishwasher in years because it wasn't cleaning properly. I rent and didn't want to fuss about it. Well... water began accumulating at the bottom of the dishwasher, I am assuming from the sink. It was smelly and would not drain or even run a cycle. All the other dishwasher cleaning videos are shown with new, pretty dishwashers that are way easier to clean. You saved me from having to call my management company. I did not even know cleaning the dishwasher filter was a thing. It actually can clean my dishes now too 😅 thank you so much!

He didn't show what to clean...that what I need to to...did you lift out the screen still containing the water
Amy Larmour I took out the spray arm, the disc below it, the filter behind the disc and the secondary filter at the bottom. There is a piece that that cuts food it’s submerged in water. I took a shop vac to suck out the water and cleaned that piece. Make sure you go to your breaker and turn off all power to the dishwasher. While everything is taken apart make sure to wash everything. My washer is so quite now. Good luck:)
I watched half a dozen other videos before making it to yours, which is my exact model. Compared to others, this model is extremely hard to service if you don't have the right tools - I had to duct tape a 1/4" fitting to a pencil and turn it with a pliers to get enough torque on these bolts!! But anyway, YOU SAVED ME!! I just moved to my own place for the first time 2 months ago and would be rotting in black water if not for you. Thank you so much!!!

This video is amazing. It worked in 2024 on a GSD3300 assembled in 2020, so I believe it still has some years to go. I used a paint can opener instead of a flathead screwdriver to pry open the spray arm and it worked as well.

Broooooo!!! This video was a lifesaver. The spray arm sucked to take off for sure. MUCH easier putting it back together. I've been losing my mind over this dishwasher for TOO LONG. For the first time I think it's actually working. Rinse cycle looked good and now waiting for a normal wash with some cleaner. All I know is this video was everything I needed to get to where I wanted. Thank you.

I enjoyed your video, At the :28 mark you show your screw driver release of the tab on the spray arm. But after trying your method of removing the spray arm, I wasn't careful enough and broke the plastic tab off. So I ordered the new part, and replaced the lower spray arm base. After inspecting the broken piece a while I noticed and figured out that the plastic piece has a triangular large shape on the side protruding outward. This is where you use a PAIR of PLIERS (not a screw driver) and grab the triangular piece and pull out on the tab ever so lightly . Be very very careful as you have said. It only needs to be pulled about 1/64 of inch, real slight movement. While doing this pulling out with your pliers in your right hand, use your left hand and place it under the spray arm and gently using your thumb and finger pushing up. It releases the arm. Ho-ray !!!!
John Routh - I just broke the tab, too. I came to read the replies to see what I should do. I guess I’m going to have to order that part, the base? I’m assuming it won’t work properly with the tab broken off?

@@rash240 the tab is what holds the spinning arm in place. I just broke the tab as well, but so far the bottom dish rack seems to be holding it in place. I can give an update after I run a few more loads for anyone else with this problem
Just put a set screw into the base tube to hold the spinning arm in. Cut a screw to the right length and thread it into the plastic.
This is a great video! I like how you showed where the tab is and where you put the screwdriver in.
I used this video to teach my 3 year old about parts, filters, seals, screws, socket wrenches, numbers, following directions, reassembling, organizing tools, and putting tools away when we’re finished with them! Thank you!

Awesome video! It helped me clean and fix my mother's dishwasher. She's 86 and lives in the country. Repair people are scare.
Thanx to your vid. (the only one of this GE model I could find) I solved the problem of black water in my washer. After disassembling down to the sump, I found that the metal impeller blade was frozen and would not move. I took a standard bit screwdriver, pushed sideways very hard on the blade until it broke free (like rotating a propeller) and after that I could spin it with my finger. Problem solved ...washer works fine ... Thanx again
Could you elaborate on this? I took it down like the video. Got out the fist sized plastic cage at the bottom and down there I could feel something like it might be the impeller. I'd didnt move and was afraid to push it too much. Is that what you are talking about? Of did you free the impeller another way or take it apart from below or? Thanks for the help.
@@badnomad357 YES ... It feels like a mini propeller against a metal screen . Iwas frozen and wouldn't move. So I put a flat/slotted screwdriver on the curved part of the propeller, with a few taps of a closed crescent wrench (on the screwdriver handle) the propeller spun freely. I reassembled and it worked fine. Worse case scenario, something breaks ... but it's broke now anyway and a service tech. would prob. just replace the whole pump...

Thank you! Our apartment maintenance guy told us "lemons and ice down the garbage disposal" to remove the smell that was created when we started our dishwasher. I knew that wasn't right! This helped me fix it myself.

Yay. I broke the tab, and everything fell down into the middle. Can’t get it out with my fingers. I found everything difficult to get to with the dishwasher door in the way. Funny there wasn’t really any debris down in the Drain. Time for another dishwasher I suppose

Great video -- love the detailed explanation -- esp. going back and explaining how to push the tab in to get each piece off. Though I couldn't see what I was doing, I could imagine it thanks to the video. Thanks to some of the other posts, I pushed the tab very carefully so I wouldn't break it!! My machine was disgustingly dirty, but now I'm ready to wash the load that has stacked up. THANK YOU!!!!

Good vid, I cleaned the drain, though I destroyed the tab...still works though. Started the washer again and it drained after the first cycle.

The first piece was the worst because there was a bunch of debris in, around, underneath and on top of the tab, when i finally popped it off i believe I broke it. But fortunately I didnt and everything is so much cleaner now. Thank you for this video!
