My all time favorite show. John razenburger auditioned for the role of Norm, realised that he didn't make the cut.He then asked the producers if they had a know it all smart ass for the bar. They said no, and the he launched into his cliff Calvin persona. They liked it so much they created the character for John.
That’s awesome what a ground breaking role . I personally started watching cheers again . Could never get past coaches passing but I finally made it to season 4 .
I met John Ratzenberger at a beautiful resort country club that was hosting a Jim Beam anniversary celebration that was interesting and a lot of fun. He is such a lovely man! Very friendly and pleasant n personable ..down to earth n good natured. He told some funny stories and we had a few laughs and my sister n I both got to actually have a Cheers with him! I felt so special I got to meet John ...Cliff Claven.. and actually have a drink with him! He is as adorable in real life as he is on screen. 🤗❤️✨
This scene is very Memorable to me.. i remember my Mom and Dad watching it, and laughing so hard they cried.. it was one of the only times i remember either of them laughing so hard over anything.
Give props for John’s physical comedic chops! He really sold that jittery robot shuffle. I can’t imagine how his knees and ankles must have felt like after. You know they had to rehears, and do multiple takes from multiple camera angles to get that scene, that perfect. Plus look how spooky-fast he is on his reactions to the single shocks. Wow!
I watched a lot of sitcoms with my parents when I was younger. Never did I see my father laugh as hard as he did while watching this scene. He practically had tears running down his face from laughing.
The first time I saw this episode, I think I laughed so hard I couldn’t get my breath, at which time I fell on the floor. Stomach hurt for quite awhile. This was the best! What great memories. Nothing today comes close to being good, let alone great.
@@Fakeaorta, you nailed it. This scene fails without his great skills. He is my personal favorite character on the show. When you see John Ratzenberger interviewed as just his normal self, you can see that he created and owned that character, who is nothing like him in real life. Just as Carroll O'Connor did with Archie Bunker. It's just great acting.
@@kevino4846 And to think the writers and producers didn't have a Cliff character. John asked them at the audition as he was leaving if the had a "Know it all" character. They said "no". Then he showed them and got hired on the spot!
I heard the story that he auditioned for the part of norm. George tried out next and after hearing him, John hitched up his pants, got the Cliffy accent and went in and played off George and they were both hired on the spot.
"Okay! Let's see how you like it, pal!!! *buzzzzzzzzzzzzz....*" Still cracks me up all these years later!!! Too bad the clip didn't have the part where the old drunk starts buzzing Cliff and says "Dance, Mailman! Dance!!"
One of the best scenes ever on Cheers, the ending to the episode was just as funny. Someone in the bar got hold of the button and was shocking Cliff. It ended with an old guy at the bar who says, " Dance Mailman!"
The absolute best one of the series. Hands downs! This one, Mash’s final episode, and the Pinedale Shopping Mall being bombed with live turkeys are the most memorable tv moments of the 80’s.
I DARE any human being on Earth to say that they haven't, at some point in their lives, known someone that they've wished that they could do this to...
This is toooo funny! If this isn't one of the classic moments in TV history, I don't know what is. And to think that the Taser hadn't even been invented yet.
Electroshock "therapy" had been in use for decades, and psychologists had started using mild electric shock units for treating compulsive behavior, addictions, etc. Other than the extreme portability and hidden placement, this was nothing new. And, BTW, the Taser was developed in the 1970s, and 'Cheers' went on the air in the '80s.
HAHAHAH!!!! Let's see how YOU like it!!" Always loved this episode!!! Cliff and Cheers was the best. It is true. They just don't make sitcoms like Cheers, All in the Family, Three's Company or Family Ties anymore!
Cliff is correct about the USPS creed. It was an inscription on the NYC General Post Office Building, quoting Herodotus, describing the courier service of the Persian Empire: "It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed."
Loved the show and this kind of reminds me of my defibulator. I'm 47 years old and a stroke and cardiac arrest survivor and have a defibulator in my chest so if my heart either stops or slows down it'll shock me which not a good feeling
The scene actually continues with Cliff misplacing the remote and the old guy at the bar finds it and is zapping him. Cliff leaves the bar still getting zapped never knowing that the old guy is the one with the remote.
I was all hyped up to see Al nail Cliff at the end, saying DANCE MAILMAN! He also delivered another super funny ending when Diane was trapped under the floor with her face in a tiny vent, looking straight up. Al comes into the frame and leans over saying, PUCKER UP BABY! Now that's funny, I don't care who you are.
Cliff reminds of of an IT manager I worked with in a company back in the 1990s. His pseudo-brainiac persona; his flawed logic/sensibilities; and having an overbearing/obnoxious temperament were strikingly similar to the Cliff Clavin character.
Apparently, John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin) is a very committed 'method actor', and he demanded that his reactions to being shocked be completely real and not faked.. So for this scene, he had electrodes wired to his testicles, and every time the remote was triggered, he received voltage to those tender bits that made him react as he did in the scene. In an interview years later, Ted Danson said "Well, I loved John as a fellow actor, but it got a little weird when he did that sh*t". Ironically, Ratezenberger died soon thereafter in a violent thunderstorm.

This scene was already a scream, but Cliff trying to shoot the doctor -- "Let's see how you like it, pal!" -- makes it absolutely legendary.
🤣
"Shoot the doctor"? Nobody has a gun in the whole scene
@@mwilliamshs “Shoot him with electricity…” After all, Cliff did ask, “you’re getting a little trigger-happy with that thing….?” Relax…

I saw one Cheers scene that rivaled this for making my entire family laugh hysterically: The one where Frederick Crane's first word is "Norm!"

I always lose it when Cliff captures the zapper and tries to use it on the other fellow.

That gag was used on the original Twin Peaks show too.
