  • This is one of Kevin Braun’s and Pete Aardema’s bizarre homemade designs which was a porotype originally intended for the use in an H1 Unlimited Hydroplane. The development of this 20 Liter V12 included the help of Kevin Aylesworth and Jeff Johnson. This massive gasoline powered beast measures nearly 1200 cubic inches with a 5.625 inch bore and a 4-inch stroke, producing a potential 3000 horsepower. Kevin and Pete are true automotive masterminds and are capable of doing pretty much anything they desire. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to see this engine in action. Please subscribe and check out the video library to see some more of Pete and Kevin’s engine designs and land speed racing events in action.

God, I wish Unlimited Hydroplane racing would go to this, the turbines are slowly killing the sport because of cost, and engine guys can't relate to a turbine. These engines would GREATLY reduce the cost and would be far more thrilling to watch race.

John, your observation is spot on. However, I personally would like to see other engine type class racing. Think of massive radial aircraft engines running 28 cylinders. Add to the list multi rotor Wankel engines. The list goes on..

Wow, I don't know about a ¾ ton International. I can see this engine in a Tractor Trailer, like a 50's or 60's Pete or Kenworth Needle/Narrow nose. It'd seem like too much engine for a pickup, the smallest I could see this engine in would be a Top kick, or Medium Duty truck application...but some mad lad did swap a Merlin in a 55 Chevy...so then again swapping this engine in a full size pickup isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Thanks again for documenting and showing us the startup of the beast, always loves hearing what these old masters have to say and show!

He did say it was going into a Jay Leno type truck. I think he was referring to one of his "cars" like the v-12 powered speedster type thing , actually it looks like an old grand-fix car before they moved the engines to the rear.
"Something" brothers, I think sore throat guys who built it. They scaled up the body and such so the body and engine proportions were similar.
This thing is soooooo bad a$$. Love it.

A gas version of a Detroit/GM Diesel, made from aluminum, and modern lighter weight parts, drop the compression to about 10:1 use a large rotary valve on the intake if needed, to prevent the piston from pushing air back into the intake, or maybe use something similar to a sleeve valve, use 1/4 of the bore as a port about 1.5" -2" tall, 3-4 ports to induce swirl, at a angle , to allow the blower to push out the exhaust filling the cylinder, the low pressure high volume boost filling the cylinder, and inject the fuel on the piston top and it start to rise compressing the air evaporating any liquid fuel, mixing it with air, at higher rpm possibly injection of fuel may need to start soon as the piston uncovers the port as scavenging is happening, if exhaust temperature is a issue, cam timing may need to be modified to close the valves to prevent fresh air and fuel from entering the exhaust , the engine should make tons of power! Especially at higher rpm when the turbo spools, pushing about 2bar into the cylinders, possibly requiring multiple fine must low volume fuel injectors, to allow a fine atomised intake charge to be pulled in, the wet injection would allow the fuel to evaporate and burn later in the stroke, possibly making more power, the engine would require a lot of testing to get ell the power from a turbo two stroke GAS engine, I think atleast a 3.80"- 4"+ stroke would be best because if the loss of work due to the intake port, maybe it doesn't matter, maybe the boost / scavenger and cam timing makes up for it, and all the energy is extracted and the exhaust valve can open allowing the pressure to start the scavenging, before the intake is open allowing the exiting exhaust pull in intake charge, then the 1-2 bar boost, making more power,
Even a 53 series based gas engine would be awesome, 424cid v8 or even a 150 cid 4 cylinder, but 2stroke I'd love to build one!! Converting a diesel to gas, the weight is out of the question, weighting 1000's of pounds it's better off diesel! Sorry to ramble!! ✌️
