    I am building a fiberglass, 1:8 scale Columbia River Gillnetter model and this video has been my bible-thank you!
    I have just positioned all my stations so I have a long way to go (doing this piece by piece on my social security!😊), but this video gives me hope!
    Blessings!

    I use to be a plug/mold builder and it is a lot of work. sand sand sand wax wax and wax some more..... I think after spraying it 3 times with gray durtec I would give it a clear coat then wax maybe 3 times and then PVA for a mold release....

      Ditto, this is old school for sure. Glad I got to learn this method in the beginning years of my marine career.

    Great video of the process! Did you have lots of blocking out the tooling gel on the inside of the mold from the strip planking printing through? I’ve found it helps to glass the wood plug before fairing but this adds a whole big step and extra cost - but makes the plug surface more stable. Looks like you have a very efficient process - thanks for sharing!

    • @akhuntfish7557
      @akhuntfish7557 Před 3 lety +2

      Yes glassing the plug before fairing would be more time consuming and expensive. We always try to keep the overall cost down. This process has worked well for us. A quick finish sanding in the mold took care of any imperfections the strip planking might’ve left. Thank you for the comment!

How hard is it to get an old furnace fan and tape a couple of furnace filters over the outlet to pull all the dust out so you can see what the heck you are doing. Take it from an old shipbuilder, that that dust is an annoyance now, wait till you get older and it all catches up with you.

    Will be expensive to build a fibreglass speedboat or just buy one?

    • @charonstyxferryman
      @charonstyxferryman Před 3 lety

      Go with buying the cheapest speed boat hull one you can find, i.e. no motor, and a speed boat that are more shipwreck than boat = you has to be good at fiberglassing.
      You can also make a composite boat : Take an existing wooden boat, make the hull in a perfect condition, but minus paint and tar, then make it *very* dry before you're fiberglassing the wooden hull
      You can also use an existing wooden boat as a mould, remember to dry the (unpainted!) wood or you will get problems with the fiberglass end result.

    • @jaquigreenlees
      @jaquigreenlees Před 3 lety +2

      Less costly to buy one than build one.
      There is a massive amount of engineering going into a speed boat hull, any mistakes in construction and boat sinks. Buying one you have a builder to hold responsible for shoddy work in that case. ;)
