    To the people complaining about Linus didn't activate Windows:
    Why bother activating Windows on their test bench when you are constantly changing the CPU and motherboard which will deactivate it if it ever even is activated. Gotta reinstall it anyways for major hardware changes. They typically just run benchmarks then probably change it or take apart the bench so that is a waste of a key

    • @noobguy57
      @noobguy57 Před 5 lety +6

      Yeah you would just have to keep reactivating, and I think it has 100 swaps before the key has been used too much, so they would need to buy another key anyways.

    intel sold us 4 core 8 thread cpus for almost 10 years at the same price point with little to no performance gain from generation to generation, but the moment AMD made a processor with competitive single core performance and good power consumption, the started innovating like we were back in the early 2000s, and AMD is literally throwing cores at us like they're tic tacs, and i love it, when 6 cores 12 threads becomes the new common minimum standard, and higher core counts are more wide spread, software developer will have to take advantage of the newly available horse power ans we will surely get some amazing software out of it

      This is a correct and accurate statement! Those single core apps take less than a minute to render witch is completely irrelevant, in fact the only reason they are single core oriented is only because they are so easy to render, you yourself are irrelevant and along with your thinking, the way you prioritize and your lack of knowledge... good day sir!

    • @keyboardkung-fuwarrior8932
      @keyboardkung-fuwarrior8932 Před 5 lety +52

      But if you spend most of your time rendering in Maya and or Blender (Using Mental/Arnold/Cycles or Vray), like I do for a living, single core speed doesn't matter much, if at all...Rendering isn't only based around Adobe products there are far more use-cases than just Premiere or After Effects. Animators and 3D Artists like myself use software that can take full advantage of those number of cores. And usually people who buy these kind of CPUs don't spend too much of their time editing in Premiere, they have Intel Editing Stations (Usually Overclocked) for that.
      All name calling aside...
      Buy the right CPU for your job or intended use...It doesn't matter how fast Intel is if my Maya Renders still take 40 minutes per frame to render.
      Intel is Good for Adobe, I can agree with that...But right now for everybody else who needs that horse power Intel is irrelevant...(Unless they lower their Prices) or up their core count. Don't base your whole argument around Adobe Products, there are many many many more use cases, that people don't even benchmark on CZcams.

    • @dannypeckenpaugh2914
      @dannypeckenpaugh2914 Před 5 lety +8

      Well speaking regarding premiere. I just picked up one of these new threadrippers through a friend who works for amd and although the benchmarks make my top of the line Intel system that's built identially except for mobo socket and a few insignificant parts like cases, different brand liquid cooling pumps and fans, and an extra Blu-ray burner doesn't- im both surprised and somewhat disappointed that the flagship of Intel's cpus is actually NOT AS FAST IN REAL LIFE USE. What the hell? And this is pretty surprising as I spent the better part of 2 days running different single core bemchmarks (amongst a gauntlet of other different tests and hardware configs and different over/under clocking/volting) and by all means my Intel flagship appears to slap the crap (maybe not quite but is considerably better in almost all the tests I've run) out of the new AMD threadripper 2 32core. (And in the off chance that the GPU setup could be changing things I ran several different benchmarks with a variety of stock and non stock amd and Nvidia gpus - including both consumer hi end and flagship as well as pro workstation amd pros and quadros in addition to the identical setups I started with - which consisted of one AMD and one nividia setup.) Sorry but it's just a fact at this point on virtually everything (besides a handful of programs that were almost to close to call and all relied HEAVILY on single core performance and we're extrely large and resourse hogging- and will soon to be replaced with multithread/core utilizing versions as they are behind the times on that considering the resources they consume and fompetojg applications availiable) that the amd comes out ahead almost every time. I'm almost completely baffled by this but I guess it shows one thong- bencarcks don't nessicarily mean everything and if you do plan on using them they should be used as guides not absolutes with other several types of performance benchmarks to temper what you read from them.
      That all being said - in every instance and worth even a few hardware boosting builds I tried Premiere consistently runs faster on the new threadripper 2, and that's not the only app running faster for sure- even amoungst most programs that would appear to favor the Intel setup by looking at the benches, there is almost no comparison to the n early night and day difference this CPU makes. Pretty fascinating and I've never really been a die-hard CPU brand fan of either amd or intel- I tend to lean toward Intel(not by much) but more importantly I've seen processors from both companies be the better of the two depending on application and price point as well as a variety of other factors. In other words I've always felt amd processors are the best for certain things and Intel for others. To be completely honest tho, given how amd has been utilizing their tech and how Intel has nowadays- I think I really am becoming AMD fanboy- not their yet but it's hard to deny the proof that their products vs Intel's for the last few lines (about back to the end of the FX Series) provide. And I understand being a fan of hardware and all but simply look at what amd cpus can do in EACH price point. it's pretty hard not to see amd is the clear winner. I still love alot of Intel's creations, but truth be told these days AMD is just plain better, and not just better bang for the buck anymore. Intel really needs to create a whole.new architecture to be the leader once again- I think the days of the "Core" series cous is coming to an end soon if amd continues the way the have been since the release of the ZEN chips. I've always slightly preferred Intel but if someone asks me next I'm doing a build "what is the best CPU I can put in my machine?" I'm going to say "quite simple, an AMP chip" instead of asking "that depends, what are you mainly going to use this computer for?" (Of course I'll still ask that question but I think everyone will get the point I'm trying 2 make!) Well done amd. Just wow.
      - though your power consumption is a little high but hardly an issue anyways when your making a build that would require a chip like this. But knowing the type of tech amd has access to I think the TDP Could easily be lowered at least a little.

      AMD used the WX designation for ThreadRipper because it's what they use to distinguish Radeon workstation products. For Radeon GPUs the X series are for prosumers and the WX series are for professionals. So a workstation with a ThreadRipper 2990WX cpu would be paired with a Radeon Pro WX 9100 gpu.

    As a software developer, I blame software developers. Maybe to a lesser extent, the state of programming languages. It's astounding how much software is afraid to properly multithread. Years ago, I thought this would be mostly fixed by now, but it really requires products like this to become more normal and to become the way we push speed now that moore's law is dead. But it's still gonna take a decade to rewrite enough code to where we _really_ do this stuff properly. At least it makes web browsing in multiple tabs a bit better.

    • @Polo3ies
      @Polo3ies Před 5 lety +51

      verdatum I agree with the developers part, although I would say programming languages aren't afraid of anything, most of them offer multithreading libraries and have been for years. Parallelism is hard, you have to change your mindset when programming and take a lot of factors into account.

    • @mareck6946
      @mareck6946 Před 5 lety +60

      i blame the industry - as a software developer i am preaching multithreaded programming since the first quadcore's hit the market. Management sees the "extra" Costs and says no since its future irrelevant ( Blindfolded Excellovers that! ). Its the same as if you come and say - hey we should fix this leak here ( i am perfectionist since i grew up having only 4kb of memory to program in ). - its loosing 4 bytes each hour. Management: 4 bytes is nothing! we have Gigabytes today - and also we can later fix that in a patch. I am like uhm no .... realistically how many people upgrade their router firmware after they get the thing? In the end you get a product that you have to reset after a couple of months or sometimes weeks in special cases becasue it hangs - and then gets called a "crappy router" - and all that as a result of 4 bytes leakage..... i wont say any names here but thats how it is nowadays... the final verdict for me quitting that job was after management told me they dont need to understand programming to make timelines nor decisions regarding efficiency. Nor did they listen... that company dindt have much sucess in the end with that product and i wasn't happy with my work there becasue i knew it could have been better.... ah well. - off to make my own company where in theese cases isn't finished at 4pm and the stuff fixed that needs to.

    • @CitarNosis317
      @CitarNosis317 Před 5 lety +24

      Programming languages are more to blame than you think. Even in the past 20 years, barely any language dared to enter the parallel space. The ones that did, they offer only a small set of starter tools, but everything else had to make your hand get dirty. Don't get me wrong. Writing perfectly threaded, safe, good performing applications are possible. If you are a black belt C++ master for example, with maybe 20-30 years of active experience. Now, those people exist. But who would ever have the budget, to assign them to every tool? To have a dozen hired?
      So, the bottom line is, languages are still behind. You can do it, but it introduces an insane amount of complexity and risk. Security, stability, scalability...

    • @REALSlutHunter
      @REALSlutHunter Před 5 lety +12

      what kind of developer are you ?
      There are tons of things that need tons of more code, and bring nothing when multithreaded, even i hobby coder know that.
      Example 1: Sort Operations.
      Create one Array for each thread, splitt the List to different Arrays, sort each array, >wait until each thread is done< now merge them to one, and then sort it again ! All advantages are gone !
      1) 8 times more ram needed because you must copy the array before you can delete it , or copy & ""delete"" each array entry which create massive access time delays
      2) At the End all is merged in one list, and must be sorted again from one thread !
      3) You cant start to sort at the end, when one thread is still running !
      More Code for nothing !
      Example 2: again Sort Operations
      Create 63 arrays. Now create 63 Threads.
      Thread 1 copy all Words that beginn with A to Array1
      Thread 2 copy all Words that beginn with B to Array2
      etc
      etc
      Thread 63 copy all Words that do >not< beginn with A-Za-z0-9 to Array 63
      Wait until each thread is done.
      Now each thread has to sort each array.
      Now each thread hast to write each array to one final array.
      And again the same Problem.
      1) Splitting Words to 63 different arrays create massive delays
      2) Same Ram usage problem here !
      3) Merge to one final array, makes no sense when there are still working threads left
      Same with Copy & Move Operations. Even a SSD can do just a limited number of i/o operations.
      Why theres no multi core application that runs exactly 4 x faster on a quadcore ? Because theres overhead. To controll the i/o operations from the cores, you need cpu power too, the OS must handle this. That's why it's just ~ 3.7 x faster
      And btw
      All above 4 Threads is absolute wasted power on daily basis. Even a Dual Cores are absolute ok on daily basis (and sometime they work even faster)
      2 Cores run with higher average clock, because the cpu workload get faster in regions where the cpu set the clock up. With a 4 Core the workload is so low, that the cores run most of the time at 800-1200mhz, because of the aggresive power safe managment from 4+ core cpu's
      More as 4 Cores are just interessting for Video Encoding, Password Decrypting, hardcore Virtualisation & maybe Gaming...because game developers slow down game engines on purpose (clock the original XBox at 740mhz and some Games run insanly fast....the default Clock from the original XBox is 733mhz ! Type some Speed Cheat Code in GTA VC and the Game runs 2-3x so fast, without drawbacks in graphics or physics)
      So the Game developers get some black money from Hardware manufacturers, and Microfuck get's it too, that's why each new Windows Version can do 10% more (and from this 10% are 80% absolute useless functions) but need 2-4x more ram as the version before, and is way slower on the same cpu.
      That's how it works for 4 decades now. And all the Hardware Zombies out there follow the hype like sheeps and buy that shit.

    • @joech1065
      @joech1065 Před 5 lety +5

      A анонимный I would say language adoption is behind. It's pretty easy to write highly parallel code in languages like Haskell because due to the strong type system and immutability you write very clean high level code and it can transform it into something else completely and compiler optimize the shit out of it to the point that it can look and perform like a c code written by hand. It's also pretty easy to make a non-parallel code into a parallel one just by adding a couple of lines. Because the type system is so strong you are never afraid to do even huge refactors because it catches nearly all bugs at compile time. So you can take some old dinosaur code that everyone forgot how to works and update it to use parallelism without worrying about huge refactor costs of introducing bugs. You also have many parallelism options there and even more ways to implement your own abstractions on top to make it even easier, but people choose more popular languages just because they are more popular.

    I think a lot of CZcamsrs and the like are going to love this CPU and how much more work they can get done with it. Not only is it really fast at encoding, you can throw a bunch of simultaneous encoding and rendering tasks at it before it tops out. It is a very impressive piece of kit. They have got a bunch of cores to work well together as their answer to being behind on single threaded performance higher for so many years. That has got them back in the game. Now if they also get single threaded performance higher in their next Zen releases, they could very easily become top dog in all respects, not just multithreaded content creation etc. .

    Wow that CPU is a thicc boi. I definitely hope AMD is successful in their endeavors, they're definitely giving it all they've got and they really have Intel scrambling to keep up, which is awesome as competition is the best thing for progress. I switched over to an 8700k recently but for a long time I was rocking an FX8320 and honestly it was a pretty sold chip even to this day (though I wouldn't build a new system with one).

    • @moldoveanu8
      @moldoveanu8 Před 5 lety +2

      had that fx8320, my experience is that it was holding me back a bit with a 980ti but definitely great at multithreaded anything. Had an skylake i5 after that one and also an older dual xeon but sold both of them for ryzen 1700 OCd to 4ghz. It's the best combination of multi threaded work and single threaded gaming, 8700k great chip too.

    • @KingofHearts67
      @KingofHearts67 Před 5 lety

      For sure, in CPU heavy games it would struggle a bit. I went from 45-60 fps to a locked 60 with higher graphics settings in GTA V when I upgraded to the 8700k but in Final Fantasy XV I saw maybe a few FPS difference, if even that and this is all with a 970. I almost built a Ryzen system a while back but at the time the RAM prices were holding me off, then one day I said the hell with it and went all out on the 8700k. I've definitely been loving it, the emulation performance has been the biggest difference for me and that's a big reason that I went with the 8700k, emulation usually loves good IPC and single threaded performance. I haven't been doing much workstation type stuff since I got out of school and I probably won't be in the future as the job I'm going into won't have me on my computer much so I'm pretty content.

With moores law slowing down quite a bit in recent times it definitely seems less nessesary to upgrade your cpu for office type work.

Now in 2018 we are in the 2012 version of the future where mainstream i7s have 6 cores and 12 threads. What was once only for the highest end prosumers is now mainstream. We are currently in (what was considered in 2012 as) the future. And perhaps in 6 more years 32 cores will be more attainable to the masses.
