    My Mum remembers the Cossack returning to the port of Leith (Edinburgh) with the POWs. Many people gathered to welcome them home. She was waving along with the crowds! Tragically the Cossack was lost in the Gibraltar convoys in 1941 with many fatalities.
    Excellent play. Thank you! ❤️

      Excellent play! My late Mum was a young girl amongst the crowds at Leith (Edinburgh) docks when HMS Cossack returned from freeing the prisoners from the Altmark. There is s famous photo of the crowds that gathered. She is there waving somewhere!
      Sadly Cossack was sunk in 1941 by a U boat escorting Gibraltar convoys with tragically over 200 men lost.
      Great play. Thanks for this.
      "The Navy's Here!" is still a greeting widely used in my home. Recommended listening. ❤️📻🌊

    Synopsis - don't read it if you don't want to know 😂:
    by Kenneth Langmaid based on the book by William Frischauer and Robert Jackson
    British Naval Officers, Petty Officers, seamen. Norwegian Naval Officers.
    German seamen, and others
    Produced by Archie Campbell
    The action takes place in Whitehall, on board the German tanker Altmark at sea in the Atlantic, in H.M.S. Cossack, and in Norwegian territorial waters.
    The year is 1939. From September I to December 7 the Altmark was the supply-ship for the Admiral Graf Spee; she was also a floating prison for the survivors of the Spee's victims. This is the story of the Altmark in the weeks following the sinking of the Admiral Graf Spee.

      I guess a monitor like HMS Roberts with two 15” guns

    • @BMrider75
      @BMrider75 Před 7 měsíci

      It's the monitor HMS Terror, built in Belfast in 1916, damaged and scuttled off Libya in 1941.
      Photo taken in Plymouth Sound in 1933.
      Smiles.
      (Wikipedia article well worth reading)

      @@stevphenrose7820 thanks for your suggestion, it guided me to HMS Terror

      @samp9539 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@BMrider75 But I have no idea why a picture of a Monitor is being used here, instead of either HMS Cossack or the Altmark.
