  • Live video footage of Jaco Pastorius' performance of "Dolphin Dance" in Belgium in February of 1985. Jaco is joined by Jon Davis on piano, Azar Lawrence on saxophone and Paco Sery on drums. Guitarist Paul Mousavizadeh is also on stage, but for some reason he doesn't solo at all during the performance. I just see him high. Hardcore addicts will still have days where the drugs work well-enough to look happy & “healthy”, especially for the cameras.
Working with addicts always tempers the vibe for a working band. I can see it. They’re relieved he’s functioning, putting on a good show, but they also know he’ll get his pay and disappear for a while, perhaps not making it to the next thing. It’s why the greatest bassist who ever lived couldn’t get gigs. No one trusted him at this point. It’s a terrible feeling.

Guitarists should take note of the guitarist Paul Mousavizadeh in this video during this song. He is doing something that is so rare among guitarists, that he leaves space and lays out when he is not necessary, because he realizes that the music around him is bigger than him and that any note he might play will upset the awesome vibe that is already created by these three awesome musicians. Most guitarists would be surprised hearing this "What!?! Leave space? Lay out? No, I have to play at least something!" No you don't, thats a real lesson that real musicians learn is that sometimes the best thing to do to improve the music is to play less, or even lay out if thats what the music calls for.

Too many guitarists with absolutely ZERO and I mean ZERO sense of space. in my last band I had a phenomenal guitar player. he was also really cool. It was a 3 piece and the drummer and him knew each other first so the drummer even always wanted to hear some guitar. I was able to finally get him into leaving space and it made songs much more fun. He was also the singer so I think he started to enjoy not having to play 110% of the time. I could never get them to drop the damn solo in every song though. they were a very 80s rock style band before me.
On a side note though, you are forgetting there is a piano there constantly playing which takes the place of the guitar

He played with Joni Mitchell, weather report, had his own solo album which is really good. He was a great addition to any music and that’s hard to do as a bass player. SUPERB! It is so easy for people to criticize, and my bet is that their musical knowledge is way below what they THINK it is. Anyone who thoroughly knows about Jaco can see that he is hurting here, well on his way down to the depths that led to his vile murder at the hands of a schlub. But still, damaged Jaco is WAY better than most healthy players. And why the heavey condemnation of a piano player that is truly feeling it? Excellent musicians will naturally emote when they are deep in a groove. I listen to a LOT of classical jazz, and that is why I have NO problem with the piano or the sax taking the lead and running with it as they do here. Ignorance isn't bliss. This PERFORMANCE is!

Exactly. The other musicians could at least follow the piano. Jaco got lost in his solo-and not in a good way for the band-they had to lay off entirely, only the drummer was keeping him together.
The transition out of his solo was awkward as hell. A fully functioning Jaco could have remembered the structure well enough to beautifully improv his way back in; instead he just dead-end stopped on the wrong chord in the wrong key and the piano had to catch the band back in while Jaco went hopping around high. 8:42
It can’t feel good for them. They’re just relieved he’s functional just enough for all the cameras.

I’ve been a bassist for about 50 years, and although I never got the whole
“love Jocko” thing, or jazz for that matter (a metal & prog guy) he still had an influence on me.
I “Jockoed” a bass to make it fretless, then to become comfortable with fretless,
I put everything else away and forced myself to play it exclusively for about a year.
Playing things on a fretless that just kinda shouldn’t be, showed me the beauty of fretless, and how different and wonderful it sounds!
    Thanks Jocko!✌🏻

On many levels, being a great musician for many turns out to be a curse for the musician and a blessing to all who hear them. Why?? Imagine music coursing through your mind, every single minute, second of the day...that's all you hear and all you have going through your brain..24/7..yes, genius to the masses, but for the artist it's maddening. That's why so many of them die and die young most often from drug addictions, because they can't turn the music off.

Here's a perfect example; the vast majority of folk have never heard of any of these guys except Pastorius; playing their hearts out, leaving it all on the feild on Herbies steepest set of chord changes. Its a challenging tune harmonically. Jazz is purely a labour of love! Because almost no one can live by playing jazz in reality. All jazz musicians know that Everyday truly world class players die around the world in relative obsecurity. While the pop world sinks to it's all time creative low. Can you say cultural dark age?
