Tommy Strand & TUH Feat Jaco Pastorius - More And More (Live in 1971)
Here's a recording of a cover of Blood, Sweat & Tears' "More And More" from Jaco's stint with the soul/r&b band Tommy Strand & The Upper Hand, his first steady paying gig. It lasted for over a year before he joined Wayne Cochran's band in July of 1972. On this recording Jaco is using the black 1962 Fender Jazz Bass in the background photo of this clip, and is featured with a funky little break about halfway through the song. On another note, the recordings with Tommy Strand and Wayne Cochran in particular dispel the myth that Jaco got his trademark 16th note grooves from Tower of Power's bassist Rocco Prestia. They were contemporaries who developed their groove styles independent of one another. In fact, you can hear the seeds of it in Jaco's playing as far back as the late 60's. To sum it up, Jaco was NOT influenced by Rocco Prestia and has never been quoted as saying such in any interview I've come across. Case closed.

Here's a great sounding June 1974 recording of Jaco soloing over the famous jazz standard "Stella By Starlight" during a trio gig with Pat Metheny and Bob Moses at "Zircon" in Somerville, Massachusetts. This solo is almost devoid of any signature licks or cliches that were typically present in his solos later on in his career, which is refreshing to hear.

      Yes, who knows how things would have turned out had he not joined Weather Report? He could have continued playing with Peter Graves on a more regular basis and perhaps toured solo promoting his debut album. Maybe he would have done more projects with Pat Metheny as well? And more importantly, maybe he wouldn't have gone down the same path of self destruction and avoided an early, tragic death?

    • @musicuniverse1986
      @musicuniverse1986 Před 7 dny

      I know Moses jokingly came up with that nickname for Pat because I read about it in an interview online about ten years ago. Sadly I can't find it anywhere now. I usually save interviews like that but I forgot to do so with that one. Regarding your second question I know that it is a Bob Moses composition because it's on his solo record "Home In Motion" which was recorded in 1979. I have the CD. It's also on Spotify. It has another Jaco connection btw because the track prominently features pianist Joanne Brackeen, who Jaco hired for a studio session (along with Pharoah Sanders and Rashid Ali to name a few) in '84 that he threw together but it ended up being shelved since Jaco didn't pay the musicians/studio for the sessions. Anyway, Bob Moses is not only a superb drummer but also a phenomenally talented composer/arranger who has released a host of highly acclaimed albums as a leader. He's on par with Pat and Jaco in that department in my opinion. He's also a wonderful pianist.

Unfortunately the first 3 tracks in particular have some annoying glitches in the form of recurring "popping" sounds that at their worst brings the music to a halt. They were caused by me accidentally leaving the cd-r copy (that I received in a trade back in the summer of 2005) out in the sun on a hot afternoon, sadly before I had ripped the cd and saved the files to a hard drive. My apologies for that. Hopefully you won't find that it is so distracting that it ruins the listening experience of what is a very energetic performance with the band in top form. Full band lineup: Jaco Pastorius - bass, Alex Foster - soprano saxophone, Kenwood Dennard - drums, Don Alias - percussion, Melton Mustafa - trumpet, Mike Stern - guitar.
